Hindus of Greater Houston plans spectacular Janmashtami celebrations

The Hindus of Greater Houston is holding a huge community-wide event by inviting families and friends to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami (birthday of Lord Krishna) at the George R. Brown Convention Center on Saturday, August 25, 2018. The event is free and open to all. An eye-catching Rangoli (art work) will be displayed at the entrance to captivate the visitors. The hall will be adorned with specially decorated booths and temples. The evening will commence with the children’s costume contest where children will wear costumes that portray Lord Krishna and other characters from the scriptures. This will be followed by a cultural program of Indian dances. The theme this year is “Bal Gopal

Houston based entrepreneur Amit Bhandari donates $50,000 to Ekal’s Digital Literacy Program

By MANU SHAH Houston based entrepreneur Amit Bhandari and his wife Arpita shaped their own American dream but along the way they also nurtured the aspirations of thousands of children, whether in the remote village of Rampura or the slums of Mumbai. Ekal was one of the first charities the Bhandaris supported and they have consistently raised this support. They recently topped it by donating $50,000 dollars to outfit a bus with 10 laptops for the Ekalon-Wheels Mobile Computer Labs program. The Ekal movement which started in 1989 to transform India, one village at a time, today, has a school in 70,000 villages offering free schooling, vocational training, digital competence and agricultural education. It has impacted 4 million children and 10 million families to date. The Mobile Computer Labs initiative is working to enhance digital literacy and has helped over 50,000 children become computer literate. The solar powered bus has pre-installed self-learning software developed by IIT, Mumbai and accommodates two students per computer. One dedicated trainer, assisted by the local Ekal teacher provides two and a half hours of training in one village. The bus, which will serve the Khargone district of Mad-

hya Pradesh near Indore, was inaugurated by Amit and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. Amit was impressed by how “coachable and open to learning the children were.” However, this isn’t the first time the Bhandaris have opened their checkbook. They support the Jain Society of Houston, donated six acres of land for the Gujarati Samaj center in Houston, wrote a quarter million dollar check to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Fund for Hurricane Harvey relief work, paid off the loans of a temple in Phoenix and raised $3 million for Magic Bus, an NGO that is deeply personal to them and aims to bring children out of poverty through a unique sports based curriculum. Amit attributes this empathy to his modest upbringing. He is a native of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. His parents were professors but the family was always stretched financially. Despite this, his parents supported a handicapped school and were always ready to provide a helping hand. Amit’s entrepreneurial leanings kicked in as early as middle school when he and a friend made paper bags and sold them to local vendors. At 17, he was accepted in the Rotary Student Exchange Program and attended High School in Hicksville, Ohio. America turned out to be “a tremendous experience” so much so that he got his aunt

properties and a convenience store and in 2006, started his own company BioUrja (Urja in Hindi means energy.) The company trades in ethanol, petroleum products, crude oil, grains, metal tubing for the oil production sector and now renewable energy. It is ranked as one of the most successful companies in Texas. There’s parental pride in his voice when he talks of his daughter and son who spent

weeks as Magic Bus Youth Leaders in slums and villages engaging with the children. The experience moved Aanya, 16, to present a paper at the United Nations outlining ways of providing nutritious food and educating farmers on employing better agricultural methods. Ansh, 14, on his part, is looking forward to spending more of his summers supporting Magic Bus programs worldwide.

Nearly 100 Indian American candidates running for office in this year’s midterm elections

By MEENA VENKATRAMANAN

Growing up in Beavercreek, Ohio, Aftab Pureval said he didn’t have many Indian American politicians to look up to and was often discouraged by others from running for office. “They’d tell me a brown guy named Aftab couldn’t get elected unless I changed my name to Al or Adam,” Pureval told ABC News. Years later, Pureval, 35, won both the Democratic primary in Ohio’s 1st Congressional District and the endorsement of a new political action committee, the Indian American Impact Fund, which supports Indian American political candidates. “I started the Indian American Impact Fund to provide the infrastructure and mentorship I didn’t have when I ran for office. I had to learn it all from scratch,” Raj Goyle, the group’s co-founder, told ABC News. This year, nearly 100 Indian American candidates entered races for federal, state and local offices -– over twice the number who ran in 2017, according to the PAC. Their efforts come as research shows that Asian Americans are among the nation’s fastest-growing racial or ethnic groups. FiveThirtyEight, an ABC News partner, noted that a 2016 survey shows that two in five Asian-Americans did not identify as Democrats or Republicans, making them somewhat of a political enigma. “Last year, there were at least 45 candidates who ran, and 25 won their races,” Gautam Raghavan, the group’s executive director, told ABC News, adding that the vast majority are running as Democrats this year. Last month, the group hosted a summit for over 200 Indian American “candidates, elected officials, donors, and community leaders” in Washington, D.C., which included keynote speakers Sen. Cory Booker, DN.J., and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., whose mother is of Indian ancestry. “It was a very inspiring gathering. Thousands of Indian Americans are politically engaged, and they were eager to meet like-minded others at the summit,” Raghavan said, adding that some of Indian American candidates may be the first to win in their states, so it’s easy for them to “feel alone” out on the campaign trail. The group endorsed Democrats Pureval, Sri Kulkarni in Texas’ 22nd Congressional District and Hiral Tipirneni in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District. Pureval and Kulkarni have won their party’s nominations, while Tipirneni will compete in Arizona’s August 28 primaries.

The June summit also included remarks by Republicans and Democrats alike, including all four incumbent Indian American House members – Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, DWash. The attendees were people like Tipirneni. “Some people jumped to a judgment and told me because I’m brown and a woman, there are two strikes against me,” Tipirneni told ABC News. “But once we got past that and started talking about the issues, we found common ground.” A first-generation immigrant who moved to the United States from India when she was three years old, Tipirneni said her family came to the country to give her a “better life” and a “great education.” “I’ve been able to realize my American Dream, and I’m running to help others realize theirs,” she said, adding that she was “touched” when a young Indian American girl came up to her and gave her a big hug at a campaign event in the Phoenix area. “She was so excited and told me she wants to run for office, too,” Tipirneni said. Tipirneni hopes that her campaign and those of fellow Indian American candidates will inspire the community to become more invested in politics. “There are so many successful Indian Americans in the medical and science fields. But it’s short-sighted for them to think politics doesn’t matter. They need to become more involved and invested,” she said. Pureval, whose Cincinnatiarea race is being targeted by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s ‘Red to Blue’ list, said he also hopes to court younger voters. “We have over 60 highschool and college-aged students – many of them Indian American – working on our campaign,” he said. “Some of them are taking next semester off from school to work, which their Indian American parents aren’t happy about. But the reality is that students feel compelled to work in this election cycle.” Meanwhile, Kulkarni, who is running for a seat in Houston’s suburbs, hopes to target Asian American voters who have historically not turned out in midterm elections. “71% of Asian Americans never get messaged by either political party,” he told ABC News. “So we reached out to them in their own languages.” Kulkarni said his efforts to recruit Asian-American voters led to an 11-percent increase in the group’s primary election

turnout since 2014, with an even higher turnout in the May runoff. “There are 104 languages spoken in my district. My team speaks 13, and I speak 6. We purposely went out into mandirs and masjids to target voters,” he said, adding that he attributes Alexandria OcasioCortez’s historic Democratic primary upset in New York’s 14th Congressional District to her courting of voters “who don’t usually vote.” The Indian American Impact Fund hopes to “get [its] endorsed candidates across the finish line” this election cycle. But beyond the midterms, it aspires to help the Indian American community in myriad ways in the coming years. “I’m looking forward to working on our poll to gauge where the Indian American community is on different issues,” Raghavan said. “And beyond that, I’m excited to help train candidates to run in 2020.” Those efforts mean a lot to Pureval, who said he represents “an American story.” “My parents immigrated from Delhi to Beavercreek, Ohio, where I grew up,” Pureval told ABC News. “I’ve always felt a connection to my

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) last month announced the appointment of Jay Khosla as his chief economic policy counsel. Khosla, who was to begin his new position July 9, will oversee tax, trade, banking and other economic policy issues, a press release issued by Sen. McConnell said. Khosla previously served as staff director for the Senate Finance Committee. Prior to that, Khosla held multiple senior roles at the Finance Committee including policy director and chief health counsel. “Jay is an all-star and I’m thrilled to have him join our team,” McConnell said. “Jay was a driving force helping deliver historic tax reform and I know he is eager to help deliver more wins for the

American people. He is one of the brightest minds we have in the tax, trade, and banking fields and his expertise will be an asset to the entire Republican Conference.” Khosla began his Senate career with former Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and later served in senior policy roles for the Senate Budget Committee and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). During the 2008 presidential campaign, he was Arizona Senator John McCain’s senior policy advisor for health care, labor and entitlement reform. A Virginia native, Khosla earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and his J.D. from the University of Richmond Law School. (www.abcnews.go.com)

They’ll bring a lot of good experience to the role that will serve NASA well as we undertake new and exciting missions.” As flight directors, they will head teams of flight controllers, research and engineering experts, and support personnel around the world and make the real-time decisions critical to keeping NASA astronauts safe in space.

Allison Bolinger, Adi Boulos, Jose Marcos Flores, Paul Konyha III and Rebecca J. Wingfield are the other five flight directors in the class of 2018. Pooja’s family hails from Mumbai and her father Atul B. Joshi is an orthopedic surgeon, who first went to London with his wife Seema A. Joshi and then moved to Houston. Now, they are in Lubbock, Texas. Pooja arrived in Houston when she was 10 and she graduated from Clements High School in Sugar Land in 2002. Then, she gained her aerospace engineering degree at the University of Texas at Austin, and interned at NASA while going to college. She has worked at the Johnson Space Center for the last 11 years in various roles. It is a life time goal to become a flight director, Pooja says. This year there were numerous applicants and after a series of extensive interviews six were chosen. As opposed to the 30 active flight directors now out of 97, there have been 339 astronauts from U.S. and 553 astronauts who have flown in space! Pooja is married to Purav Jesrani, an attorney and they have a daughter, Jaya, 2 1/2 years old. They live in the Montrose area of Houston.

Hindu and Sikh terror attack victims honored at Afghanistan Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Washington, DC (July 16, 2018) — On Sunday, July 15th, Ambassador Hamdullah Mohib, PhD hosted a memorial service at the Washington, DC Embassy of Afghanistan to commemorate the Sikh and Hindu victims of the July 1 terrorist attack in Jalalabad. Responsibility for the attack, intended to drive the remaining small population of Hindus and Sikhs from the country, has been claimed by the Islamic State in Afghanistan. Opening the program, Ambassador Mohib said, “This occasion is one that brings us together to recognize a community that has deep roots in Afghanistan. For many, they often think of the minority Hindus and Sikhs as migrants from India. But in reality, the Hindus and Sikhs of Afghanistan are the original residents of this country.” Sena Lund, President of the New York-based Afghan Hindu Association, recited the names of the 18 slain Sikh and Hindu leaders. Asha Kapoor of the local Asamai Hindu Mandir recited a speech in Dari, the official language of Afghanistan to commemorate the victims. Sounds of sacred traditional Sikh hymns, sung by leaders of the local Washington gurdwara and National Sikh Campaign, as well as verses from the Bhagavad Gita, recited by Pandit Ram Kumar Shastri of Silver Spring, Maryland’s Asamai Mandir, filled the air. A packed hall of mourners from the Hindu and Sikh communities sat alongside officials from the Afghan Embassy, Indian Embassy, and US State Department facing a mural depicting the ancient relics of the Buddhas of Bamiyan. Jay Kansara, HAF Director of Government Relations, addressed the assembly asking those afflicted by the tragedy to not lose hope. Hindus and Afghans have more than 5000 years of history binding our civilizations and a shared destiny in democracy, Kansara told the audience. “We at the Hindu American Foundation pledge to be with you every step of the way as Hindu and Sikhs seek full enfranchisement in Afghan society,” Kansara concluded. Mr. Puneet Kundal, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of India, conveyed condolences from the Government of India: “I am here to express my condolences of the Government of India, the Embassy of India, and indeed the people of India to the Government of Afghanistan and people of Afghanistan for the loss of life that this dreadful violence has

cost you. The very fact that you are organizing this event here today is a representation of the sentiments that the government of Afghanistan feels for these communities.” Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services committees, as well as the first Hindu in the US Congress, also conveyed condolences, read by a representative of her office: “This brutal attack is yet another example of the fear, bigotry and hatred that sadly exists in our world. During the Taliban regime, Hindus and Sikhs were forced to wear yellow patches to identify themselves

in public, furthering extreme prejudice, and eventually forcing many to seek asylum in India. These fear tactics and attacks attempt to divide us, but we cannot give into this hate. We must confront hatred with love, fear with understanding, and darkness with light. We must continue to stand up to bigotry and hatred in Afghanistan, here at home, and around the world.” A letter from the Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback was read by a senior official from his office at the US State Department: “The loss of these community leaders was a terrible blow,

not only to Afghanistan, but also to the international community. The Sikh and Hindu communities have a long and distinguished heritage, and this horrific attack will not diminish that. Our office will continue to monitor the conditions faced by religious minorities in Afghanistan. I stand with you and will work toward an Afghanistan that is peaceful and secure for all its people.” Closing the event, Mr. Joginder Kapoor, former president of the Afghan Hindu Association, emotionally made a direct call to action: “What the future holds for us, a miniscule minority, does not look bright as long as for-

eign insurgents are in Afghanistan. They must be eradicated. These radical Islamic terrorist groups must be wiped out from the face of the earth. We pray that peace and tranquility return to this once a peaceful nation so our children, and our children’s children, who live outside Afghanistan can one day be able to visit the land of their forefathers without any fear and prejudice.” The event was organized by the Afghan Hindu Association, in conjunction with the Embassy of Afghanistan, with the assistance of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF).

AAPI collaborates with USAID, Sevak Project, CETI to make India Free of Tuberclosis

While India has been proactive against TB in recent years, there is still a long way to go. India bears the world’s largest burden of tuberculosis (TB), accounting for one-fourth of all new infections. Given that it kills nearly 300,000 people in India every year, the prevention and control of TB is a challenge at multiple levels, requiring the united efforts of a diverse range of stakeholders. On the concluding day of the 10th Global Healthcare Summit in New Delhi, India, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work towards eradicating Tuberclosis (TB) by the year 2030 in India. Now, under the new leadership of AAPI, the largest ethnic organization of any medical group in the US has initiated collaborative efforts to help eradicate TB from the face of India. Towards this lofty goal, AAPI has announced the launch of a new partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Sevak Project, and CETI to make India Free of Tuberclosis and to end tuberculosis (TB) from across the Indian sub-continent. Anwar Feroz, AAPI’s Strategic Advisor, was instrumental and the architect of fostering the MOU between AAPI and USAID. “Continuing with AAPI’s

mission, which is to provide a forum to facilitate and enable Indian American physicians to excel in patient care, teaching and research, and to pursue their aspirations in professional and community affairs, and giving back to their motherland, India, this historic signing of the agreement, is yet another way of showing our continued commitment to helping make India’s over a billion people, healthier,” declared Dr. Naresh Parikh, President-Elect of AAPI. The MoU outlines the multifaceted nature of the TB epidemic, its impact on communities, learnings from global successes and the way forward towards tackling the disease successfully. Under the Memorandum of Understanding, signed in New Delhi and announced in Mumbai, AAPI and USAID along with other NGOs will work together to utilize the 100,000-strong network of physicians of Indian-origin living in the United States to support health programs in India, engage AAPI’s network of private charitable clinics for TB awareness, detection and treatment, and explore opportunities for collaborations between U.S. and Indian medical schools to exchange cuttingedge health care solutions. XersesSidhwa, Director of Health at USAID/India, said: “We have been supporting the TB program of the Govern-

ment of India for two decades now. Along with extending technical expertise, USAID has invested $140 million to strengthen the capacity of national, state, and district-level TB programs across India. With our collaboration with AAPI, we aim to strengthen the early detection and treatment of TB, with a focus on drug-resistant strains; continue our assistance to the government to plan and implement evidence-based interventions to reach a TB-Free India, and improve patient-centered TB services.” Dr. Manoj Jain, an infectious disease physician, a lead for AAPI for TB Elimination, has been in the forefront, as the founder of CETI, in collaborations with AAPI to eliminate TB from India based in Indore, and Faculty at Emory University Rollins School of Public health, and live and practice in Memphis, TN. A writer, and a national leader in healthcare quality improvement, Dr. Jain has been part of this new initiative of AAPI, since its launch. Dr. Jain writes regularly for the Washington Post, and the Commercial Appeal (Memphis newspaper). His writings also appear in the New York Times and the Times of India. He received his engineering, doctorate, and public health degrees from Boston University. He has served as a consultant to

the World Bank on HIV, and has been interviewed by CNN and National Public Radio. Dr. Jain has conducted research on HIV epidemiology, quality improvement, and spirituality & medicine. Presently, Dr. Jain is adjunct assistant professor at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and the medical director at Tennessee’s Quality Improvement Organizations. He is a faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement www.ihi. org, and is on the leadership team for the Healthy Memphis Common Table Community Partners Council and for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant. He has founded and chaired the Annual Nonviolence Conference in Memphis. In helping AAPI leadership in preparations for AAPI Global Health Summit in Mumbai in December 2018, Dr. Jain is involved in working with local leaders develop a Local Roadmap on how to make 10 localities TB Free: Indore, Bhopal, Rajkot, Sevek villages in Gujarat, Mumbai-Malad, Ahmedabad, Mysore, Nagpur, Varanasi, and Lucknow, by conducting Field work with local NGOs in these localities to do TB screening in the slum areas. Dr. Jain says, “AAPI and CETI are working together can collaborating with other national and international organizations. Sharing best practices and pushing the TB Free effort.

We have done a successful training sessions for 10 NGOs from these communites in Indore from June 8-12. We are staring to build local teams to develop the Roadmap for TB Elimination. And, we hope to start field work in these localities within 4-6 weeks.” Dr. Jain says, “I have been going back to India each year for the past 45 years I have been in America. For the past 10 years we have taken on the challenge to make India TB Free, devoting my times and resources, working in villages or the slums of underserved community. We can see a measurable improvement in the lives of others, when we empower those in need and those who are helping them there on the ground.” Dr. Thakor G. Patel, currently serving as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, who along with his successful Sevak Project in Indian villages, has been another inspiring force with the aim to free India of TB. “This is a huge issue in India because of clustering of people, poor nutrition and exposure to the infected people,” Dr. Patel says. “The objective of the TB Free India initiative is to make people aware of the disease and its mode of transmission, identify See AAPI, Page 9

By helping them we will keep them working and provide for their family on a long term basis. And, he has charted out a plan. “ Collaboration with AAPI will help reach the government agencies in India and other NGO’s to help increase the outreach. At first, we will take all the Sevak villages and have the Sevaks implement the program. Once it is in place and we have a road map on how to expand the program it will be implemented in other statesthrough NGO’s and government. We will be looking at ASHA workers for expanding the reach. “We run the Sevak Project in the State of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and the country of Guyana. The plan is to use the NGO’s and government sources. Once the government gets involved with the success, they can take over. supplementing the government programs.” Following his training in Nephrology and Internal Medicine in 1979, Dr. Patel joined the United States Navy where he served for 23 years. Dr. Raj Bhayani, PresidentElect of AAPI-QLI, reported that nearly 2,000 villagers and underprivileged citizens from the outskirts of Varanasi, India came together as AAPI and AAPI Charitable Foundation organized World Health Day on April 7th. “This is a very much impoverished area of Varanasi where any help will be substantial,” said Dr. Bhayani. “We will be launching TB FREE VARANASI campaign soon in this region initially, and will take

the campaign across the nation, later on.” Dr. Bhayani has urged AAPI leadership to “add this location for starting AAPI charitable clinic as we have a great reliable local partner and devoted and dedicated local team as well as tremendous need of clinic in this area.” Dr. Naresh Parikh, President-Elect of AAPI, says: “Elimination of Tuberculosis has been a matter of national concern for many years now.”

Billionaire Ambani topples Jack Ma as Asia’s Richest Person

Mukesh Ambani Mukesh Ambani overtook Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma to become Asia’s richest person as he positions Reliance Industries Ltd. to disrupt the e-commerce space in India. The chairman of India’s refining-to-telecoms conglomerate, Ambani was estimated to be worth $44.3 billion on Friday with Reliance Industries Ltd. rising 1.6 percent to a record 1,099.8 rupees, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Ma’s wealth stood at $44 billion at the close of trading Friday in the U.S., where the company is listed. Ambani has added $4 billion to his fortune this year as Reliance doubled its petrochemicals capacity and investors cheered the success of his disruptive telecom upstart Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. Then earlier this month, the tycoon unveiled plans to leverage his 215 million telecom subscribers to expand his e-commerce offerings, taking on the likes of

Amazon.com Inc. and Walmart Inc. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s Ma has lost $1.4 billion in 2018. “We need to broaden our horizon of expectation with Reliance,” said Nitin Tiwari, a Mumbai-based analyst at Antique Stock Broking. “They are in for something really transformational.” Ambani, best known for executing large-scale projects, spearheaded construction of the world’s largest refining complex in Jamnagar, owns the most-widespread mobile data network globally and claims to have India’s biggest as well as most-profitable retail firm. At this month’s annual shareholders’ meeting, Ambani said Reliance saw its “biggest growth opportunity in creating a hybrid, online-to-offline new commerce platform,” involving the group’s Reliance Retail Ltd. and Reliance Jio businesses. The “size of Reliance will more than double” by 2025,

Ambani said at the meeting. Jio will introduce a fiberbased broadband service across 1,100 Indian cities in August in what Ambani said would be the biggest greenfield fixed-line rollout anywhere in the world. “Jio is the driver behind the surge in Reliance,” said Deven Choksey, managing director at Mumbai-based KR Choksey Shares and Securities Pvt. “If the company is going to double profit a few years down the line, the stock price will also double, if not more.” A spokesman for Reliance didn’t immediately reply to an email seeking comment. Equity Culture Within a week of the announcements, Reliance re-entered the $100 billion club after more than a decade. He used the same venue two years ago to announce his disruptive telecom venture with free offers that eventually forced smaller rivals to quit and the biggest ones to merge. The billionaire inherited Reliance from his much-storied father Dhirubhai Ambani, who is credited with sparking an equity culture among middleclass Indians and using their savings to build the group’s textile and petrochemical manufacturing units. Dhirubhai’s death in 2002 left the group in the hands of Mukesh and his younger brother Anil Ambani. The brothers eventually split the company in 2005, as per a family pact brokered by their mother, after years of acrimony.

India’s plan to tweak its citizenship law Citizens of India’s northeastern states have been protesting

vigorously against a proposed new citizenship regime that they claim will “destroy their culture” in the region. The protests have been diverse and dramatic—petitions, hunger strikes, effigyburning, and a rebel militant group threatening to end talks with the Indian state. The source of their anger is the citizenship amendment bill, first tabled in the lower house of the Indian parliament in 2016. It is set to change the Citizenship Act of 1955, which has formed the basis of India’s citizenship regime since it gained independence from the British empire in 1947. The amendment seeks to allow select “persecuted minorities” (Hindus, Christians, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhist, and Jains) from the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan citizenship status in India after six years of residency. Other groups must wait 11 years to become naturalised citizens. In the northeastern states, the fear is that this amendment would legitimise the migration of Hindus from neighbouring Bangladesh in particular, potentially affecting the demographic make-up of the region. When the bill’s parliamentary committee began touring the northeast in May, protests grew steadily larger, stronger, and more widespread. As almost 99% of their boundaries are international borders, the citizens of these states have been quick to point out that they would be the first “victims” of the new amendment if it makes it easier for minority immigrants to travel across the border, settle in, and become full citizens. The complaints are The bill will change the character of citizenship for India as a whole. loudest in the state of Assam which has waged a four-decade struggle against the Indian state to prevent what some there call “unchecked infiltration” from neighbouring Bangladesh. The committee’s decision to visit the northeast—and the media coverage of the protests—have framed this as a northeastern issue, not a national concern. But in fact, the citizenship amendment bill will change the character of citizenship not just for this region, but for India as a whole. When India achieved independence, its citizenship regime was established on the basis of jus soli (birth within a territory), meaning that people were members of the political community regardless of their religion or ethnicity. While the mistrust of Muslims has persisted into present-day India, particularly in the recent years with growing Hindu rightwing populism, the law has so far upheld the secular, non-religious character of the Indian state. The citizenship amendment bill would fundamentally alter this basic tenet, shifting the basis of citizenship towards jus sanguinis (by right of blood). But as historians such as Joya Chatterji and Ornit Shani have documented, there have been frequent challenges to the principle of citizenship by birth, especially in the period immediately after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. In contrast to Muslims, Hindus were from the start considered “natural citizens” of India. Muslim citizens of pre-independence India were ostensibly given a choice between the two countries, but in practice, they were subjected to arbitrary processes to “prove” their loyalty to the Indian state. Similar demands were not made of Hindu citizens crossing the border from newlyformed Pakistan back into India. Regardless of which states or regions would be most affected by a sizeable influx of migrants, the bill changes the character of Indian citizenship and the basis on which it is granted, moving from secular to overtly favouring specific groups, particularly Hindus. It opens the door for the creation of second-class citizenship for non-Hindus and most of all Muslims, not just in the extra-legal practices of discrimination and violence that exist today, but in the law. Given that India repeatedly fails its own minorities, perhaps it’s not surprising that it is only prepared to offer refuge and asylum on the basis of ethnicity, not humanitarian need. It’s no coincidence that this amendment was introduced by the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), led by prime minister Narendra Modi, which has an abysmal track record in protecting India’s minorities, whether they are Muslims, Christians, or Dalits. Nor has it shown any The bill also leaves out Muslim minorities in Pakistan, such as Shias and Ahmadis. inclination to help rehabilitate south Asia’s largest persecuted minority, the Rohingya. Furthermore, the bill also leaves out Muslim minorities in Pakistan, such as Shias and Ahmadis. There is also speculation about whether the bill is a means to appease India’s Hindu diaspora abroad—an important funding base for the ruling party. Even the relatively hardline BJP is not immune to public resistance. The protests in the northeast prompted India’s government to backtrack and table discussions to address what it euphemistically referred to as “people’s concerns.” But by framing the amendment as a regional issue, the government has managed to confine public opposition to the people of the northeast. Because the region is already marginalised in Indian politics, the rest of the country is often apathetic about its concerns, which rarely become pan-Indian ones.

The 750th birth anniversary of Sri Vedanta Desika, one of the greatest names of Sri Vaishnava philosophy and a shining jewel in Indian spiritual tradition, is being celebrated at the House of Commons, UK, on 18th July 2018, by the All Party Parliamentary Group for British Hindus in association with other organizations. Sri Vedanta Desika Sampradaya Sabha, Mumbai and Dri Vedanta Desika Manipaduka Indraprastha Trust, New Delhi, are among those supporting the celebration at the House of Commons. Sri Venkatanatha, well known as Swami Sri Vedanta Desika, who is regarded as a divine incarnation was a great thinker and scholar and religion and philosophy. He was a great poet, dialectician, mathematician, and has left no branch of learning untouched. He was a role model during his life-time, and his teachings hold good even today. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has issued a message on this occasion. “(Desika’s) life and work added great heft to the great teachings of his Guru, the great Sri Ramanujacharya. He enthralled thousands of people with his adeptness at handling both simple, practical realities and sophisticated theological concepts. A polyglot, who could write in multiple languages and a prolific author, his beautifully crafted literary texts remain some of the most brilliantly composed works ever written. “Rightly called the Lion of poetry and logic, his mastery and genius enriched multiple disciplines ranging from philosophy, literary treatises, mathematics and even the practical disciplines of sciences and arts. “I hope that the function on 18th July will make more people aware about the great contributions of Sri Vedanta Desika, and motivate them to fellow his teachings as well as Imbibe his quality of seeking knowledge tirelessly. On this occasion, I pay my tributes to the master of all realms of knowledge-Sri Vedanta Desika. I convey my best wishes for the success of the event.” Trupti Patel, president of the Hindu Forum of Britian, in a statement said: “On behalf of the Hindu Forum Britain, we are delighted to honour Vedanta Desika on his 750th year with a commemorative event at the House of Commons. Desika is an unparalleled literary genius and spiritual leader whose teachings continue to inspire millions of people around the world. “His prowess in upholding the flag of Vishishtadvaita, the branch of Vedanta he taught, while maintaining personal relationships of trust and friendship with other schools of philosophy, endeared him as a natural leader for all faith com-

munities during his times. The values he upheld and the lessons he taught are equally relevant today, as they were 750 years ago. “We hope that this event will mark a beginning for the International community to become more aware of this stalwart spiritual leader; and start appreciating his immense contribution to social harmony, spiritual upliftment and cultural renewal.” S. Govindarajan, president of Sri Vedanta Desika Sampradaya Sabha, Mubai said: “We are honored to join hands with the Hindu Forum of Britain and the All Party Parliamentary Group for British Hindus, to host a reception at the House of commons to celebrate the 750th birth anniversary of Vedanta Desika. “Sri Vedanta Desika Sampradaya Sabha, is a premier institution established seventy years ago in the metropolis of Mumbai. “It has been practicing, propagating and preserving the culture inherited from the great savant, philosopher, poet and spiritual leader Vedanta Desika. “The theme for the event at the House of Commons is ‘Loving surrender and service’.

This is a theme that recurs as a shared value, and runs like a common thread in all faith communities of the world. “In his magnum-opus, Sri Rahasyatrava Saram, Desika explains the concepts of prapatti or loving surrender to the Supreme Lord, which results in divine service. “Christianity too speaks of surrendering oneself to God as the means to attain fearlessness. “Surrender your heart to God, turn to him in prayer, and give up your sins, even

those you do in secret. Then you won’t be ashamed; you will be confident and fearless.” (John,11, 13-15). We hope that this event will increase our desire to appreciate shared values between the faith communities in Britain.” Vedanta Desika, who was born 750 years ago, is the most famous preceptor in the Sri Vaishnava Hindu tradition, after the great Bhagavad Ramanuja, who was born 250 years before him. Desika assimilated the works of his preceptors and

systematized their teachings in a structured and scientific manner. The rules and rituals he codified form the main practices of the Sri Vaishnava community, even today. Vedanta Desika’s greatest contribution is his literary legacy in Sanskrit, Tamil and Prakrit. He has left over hundred texts that showcase his extraordinary scholarship and skills in grammar, prosody, logic, poetry, philosophy and various arts and sciences. Desika has employed 22 metres in the 862 verses he composed on presiding deities of various temples In India. Ramanuja reformed the rituals and worship in the historical Srirangm temple, toured extensively over India, and wrote influential texts such as the Sri Bhashya, a commentary on the Vedanta Sutras, a summary study of Vedic philosophy. He organized a network of temples, which served as centers of studies during the 11th and 12th centuries. A hundred years after Ramanuja’s departure, the pure teachings of Sri Vaishnavism became influenced by other schools, and teachers were unable to provide correct guidance. It was in this unstable environment that Vedanta Desika was born. Deslka re-established the teachings of Ramanuja on a firm footing by his teachings, writings and instructions. It was in early 18th century that the great mathematician, Leonhard Euler investigated the Knight’s tour problem where the knight had to tour the entire chess board without any repetition. But, who would have imagined that this was not just solved by Vedanta Desika, but was woven with Intricate poetry and philosophy back in 13th century. In the 30th chapter of his composition, the Paduka Sahasram, Vedanta Desika had used several types of poetic imagery. Chaturango Turanga Bandhom was one such imagery through which the knight’s tour problem had already been solved elegantly, 500 years before before Euler. NEWS SC reserves verdict on constitutional validity of criminializing homosxuality The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its verdict on a clutch of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of section 377 of Indian Penal Court which criminalises consensual gay sex. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra concluded hearing the arguments on the contentious issue after detailed hearing of four days, which had commenced on July 10. The bench, also comprising Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, asked the parties to file written submissions in support of their claims by July 20. The verdict is likely to be pronounced before October 2 this year as Justice Misra would be retiring as CJI on that day. Section 377 refers to ‘unnatural offences’ and says whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either descrip-

tion for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to pay a fine. The apex court heard the writ petitions filed by dancer Navtej Jauhar, journalist Sunil Mehra, chef Ritu Dalmia, hoteliers Aman Nath, Keshav Suri and business executive Ayesha Kapur and 20 former and current students of the IITs. They have sought decriminalisation of consensual sex between two consenting adults of the same sex by declaring section 377 of IPC as illegal and unconstitutional. The issue of section 377 was first raised by an NGO, Naaz Foundation, which had in 2001 approached the Delhi High Court which had decriminalised sex between consenting adults of the same gender by holding the penal provision as “illegal”. This 2009 judgement of the high court was overturned in 2013 by the apex court which had also dismissed the review plea against which the curative petitions were filed which are pending.

The apex court had commenced the hearing on the fresh writ petitions challenging re-criminalisation of consensual gay sex between two adults, rejecting the Centre’s plea seeking postponement of the proceedings by four weeks. It had in 2013 restored the criminality of the sexual relationship between persons of the same sex, after the Delhi High Court’ had decriminalised it in 2009. At the outset of the hearing, the five-judge bench on July 10 had made it clear that it was not going into the curative petitions and would adjudicate on the fresh writ petitions in the matter. The writ petitions were opposed by Apostolic Alliance of Churches and Utkal Christian Association and some other NGOs and individuals including Suresh Kumar Kaushal. Kaushal had also challenged the 2009 verdict of the high court in the apex court which had restored section 377 of IPC.

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre to respond to the Shia Waqf Board chairman’s plea seeking a ban on hoisting green flags with a crescent and a star at buildings and religious places across the country. A Bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and Ashok Bhushan asked the counsel for Shia Waqf Board chairman Syed Waseem Rizvi to serve a copy of the petition to Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to enable him file a reply on behalf of the Centre. Mr. Rizvi, in his plea, has

claimed that green flags with a crescent and a star are “un-Islamic” and resemble the flag of a Pakistani political party. He also claimed in his plea that during his visit to Mumbai and other places in the country, he saw flags on several buildings and religious structures, allegedly causing tension between the Hindu and Muslim communities. The plea alleged that the flags resembled the flags of the Pakistan Muslim League, which belongs to an “enemy country”. It claimed that the crescent

star flags in green owe their origin to the erstwhile political party, Muslim League, founded by Nawaz Waqar Ul-Malik and Mohammad Ali Jinnah in 1906. In the present day, it was being used by Indian Muslims who were treating it as an Islamic flag, it added. Such flags are being hoisted in Muslim-dominated areas with “utmost impunity”, the plea said, claiming that the crescent and star in a green backdrop have never been part of any Islamic practice and do not have any role or significance in Islam.

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought to know whether it could hear as a public interest litigation (PIL) a plea claiming that some scenes in the Netflix series “Sacred Games” are derogatory to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and should be removed.

A Bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar asked the petitioner’s advocate to first advance his submissions on the point of maintainability of the plea as a PIL and listed the matter for further hearing on July 19. The Bench said it has gone

through the CD of the series, placed on record by the petitioner, and there was nothing urgent in it as all the episodes have been aired. It also asked how the actors could be held liable for enact-

Court asks for special law against lynching The Supreme Court on Tuesday condemned recent incidents of lynching and mob violence against Dalits and minority community members as “horrendous acts of mobocracy”, and asked Parliament to pass law establishing lynching as a separate offence with punishment. A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra held that it was the obligation of the State to protect citizens and ensure that the “pluralistic social fabric” of the country holds against mob violence. The judgment authored by Chief Justice Misra for the Bench, also comprising Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud, said such law should be effective enough to instill a sense of fear in the perpetrators. The court said the growing numbness of the ordinary Indian to the frequent incidents of lynchings happening right before his eyes in a society based on rule of law is shocking. The government should see the judgment as a “clarion call” in a time of exigency and work towards strengthening the social order. It was also the obligation of the Centre and the States to ensure that “nobody takes the law into his hands nor become a law into himself”, the court said. It directed several preventive, remedial and punitive measures to deal with lynching and mob violence. The court ordered the Centre and the States to implement the measures and file compliance reports within the next four weeks. In the last hearing of the case, the court had classified lynchings as sheer “mob violence”. It had said compensation for victims should not be determined solely on the basis of their religion, caste, etc, but on the basis of the extent of injury caused as “anyone can be a victim” of such a crime. Chief Justice Misra said the States could not give even the “remotest chance” to let lynchings happen. The judgment came in a contempt petition filed by activist Tehseen Poonawalla. It said that despite the Supreme Court order to the States to prevent lynchings and violence by cow vigilantes, the crime continued with impunity. “Despite your order to the States to appoint nodal officers to prevent such incidents, there was a lynching and death just 60 km away from Delhi just recently,” senior advocate Indira Jaising had submitted. Ms. Jaising argued that the incidents of lynchings go “beyond the description of law and order... these crimes have a pattern and a motive. For instance, all these instances happen on highways. This court had asked the States to patrol the highways”. The lynchings were “targeted violence” against particular religion, caste, an thus, in violation of the constitutional guarantees under Article 15 of the Constitution. Article 15 protected from discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, sex, gender, etc., Ms. Jaising said. Chief Justice Misra had even asked the Centre to frame a scheme under Article 256 to give directions to the States to prevent/control the instances and maintain law and order, but Additional Solicitor General P.S. Narasimha disagreed, saying such a scheme was unnecessary. ing their characters. The court said a person is entitled to express his views, which may be right or wrong, and asked the petitioner to satisfy it on how the court could interject. “Are there other remarks in the series or any other material as far as Rajiv Gandhi is concerned? You don’t require any CBFC certificate before airing?” the Bench asked. The court was hearing a plea filed by petitioner advocate Nikhil Bhalla, through advocate Shashank Garg. It contends that the show, starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, “incorrectly depicts historical events of the country like Bofors case, Shah Bano case, Babri Masjid case and communal riots”. Senior advocate Chander Lal, appearing for Netflix, and senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing production house Phantom, said the series has eight episodes that have already been aired and does

not require a CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) certificate. The petitioner’s counsel told the court that Mr. Bhalla has a history of being a Congress member but has filed this plea in his personal capacity and it was not a case of personal interest. The plea has alleged that certain scenes and dialogues in the show defamed the late Congress leader. The plea has sought directions to Netflix Entertainment, the show’s producer — Phantom Films Production Ltd. — and the Centre to ensure “in toto” removal of the allegedly offensive scenes and derogatory remarks made directly or indirectly against the former prime minister or his family. The first season of the show, comprising eight episodes, was released on July 6 and is available in 190 countries in four languages, the petition has said.

VIEWS

Significance of Mohan Bhagwat’s Speech at BSE

By Ratan Sharda What the RSS Sarsanghchalak presented on the occasion, with brevity that is his hallmark, is the essence of the years of work done to concretise the idea of Integral Humanism and development that is integral that takes care of not just material needs but also the spiritual needs of human beings and all other living beings on this Earth I was part of panels on two financial channels that discussed and debated Shri Mohan Bhagwat’s speech in BSE, Mumbai on the occasion of the release of a book on Economic History of India since ancient times. The book being on economics, the speech had to be on economics. It was but natural for economists to sit up and discuss his lecture and for popular media to debate it. It is a great departure from earlier days of brushing away of any RSS views from public discourse. Those who know RSS or study RSS are aware that RSS has been talking of an alternative economic model based on Indian genius and experience as both Communism and Capitalism have failed to solve the problems of the society in a holistic manner since 1960s. Based on Shri Guruji’s directions, Shri Deendayal Upadhyay studied the historical economic systems of India (like Arth Shastra), various ‘isms’ and came up with the philosophy of Integral Humanism. In Hindi it is Ekatma Manav Darshan (not ‘ism’ or ‘vaad’) In English to the nomenclature of Integral Humanism remains prevalent. Later this theory was expanded and studied further by brilliant pracharak, a great theoretician, founder of the biggest trade union movement Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Shri Dattopant Thengdi. He called it the Third Way. He predicted the downfall of Communism in the 1970s when people were still dazzled by it. This Third Way was further expounded by an ex-Marxist, turned Hindu economist Shri M G Bokare. There have been many other intellectuals like Dr Mahesh Sharma, Dr Ashok Modakwho have worked on the theory. Then, there was Nanaji Deshmukh, pracharak and Jan Sangh leader, who worked hard to create a

model of Integral Humanism on the field at Chitrakoot. What the RSS Sarsanghchalak presented on the occasion, with brevity that is his hallmark, is the essence of the years of work done to concretise the idea of Integral Humanism and development that is integral that takes care of not just material needs but also the spiritual needs of human beings and all other living beings on this Earth. While giving an overall idea of the direction in which political economies should move, he opened the lecture by saying, “I cannot speak on policies as they are created as per requirements of the society at that point of time in history. Policies cannot be frozen, nor can we be tied down to any ‘ism’ as it blocks the independent thinking.” Sarsanghchalak’s 40-minute speech in 20 points Policies are dictated by the requirements of a society or nation at a particular time and they need to be dynamic We should not box ourselves into any ‘ism’ as it curtails our independent thinking. We must think beyond ‘isms’ Economic policies need to be tested on simple thumb rule – that its benefits should reach the last person in the queue There are many wants but limited means; Or to put it differently, Earth has enough for our needs but not our greed. We need to temper our consumption and not waste our resources Produce quality products, there will be enough demand for them, but don’t produce and then advertise to make people consume the product Arth and Kaam are part of our four purusharthas as per our ancient Indian philosophy of Arth, Kaam, Dharma, Moksha. We are not just spiritual people. Hindu dharma never said so. We should perform all the four purusharthas. Some people have only hunger for spirituality, they can directly move to dharma and moksha Arth and Kaam must be enjoyed but within the boundaries of Dharma with the moral code of conduct that doesn’t corrupt Four Ashramas of Brahmcharya, Grihasthi, Vanprasth and Sanyas indicate the same holistic approach to life

Our culture doesn’t talk of Individual vs Society, Environment vs Development or Agriculture vs Industry as opposites but strives for synthesising various aspects and hormonise them. It is this and that, not this or that. We cannot have growth of Industry at the cost of Agriculture just as we cannot have growth of large corporates at the cost of MSME MSME is the major employment generator; big industries should work with MSME as their complimentary forces not as opposing forces. Employment generation should be our prime aim as we are a populous country Agriculture should be holistically developed There should be integral view and policy-making from social, political and economic viewpoints When we think of development, the economy is not the only thing, we must also take care of education and security Decentralisation is a way to grow. Centralisation is not good for the country and economy Take the best of ideas from the world, adapt them to our own social and economic ethos. People debate that China is not Communist anymore, it is Capitalist now. What matters to its citizens is, it tailored the policies as per its requirements GDP may not be a good overall indicator of economic well being, so different countries are trying their own indicators to measure their growth and development success When everybody around you is happy only then you can live in peace and prosper. To have this happiness and growth, you need security. Similarly for India to grow as a happy country, we should be secure and people around us should also be happy. Happiness is combination of Security, Prosperity and Growth Happiness is not just material wealth as west believes, it comes from inside. We should nurture this sense of satisfaction and living within our means While west talks of survival of the fittest, we say upliftment of all, not some.We say a person should not just earn but work as a trustee of wealth,

and distribute wealth to the society. Live for others We can be less cash economy but not cashless economy as many people in India simply cannot transact cashless. They use cash He said, “We should have debates and discussions on various policies. While suggesting discussions and debates, he pointed out that. Please read and study more. Take what you found good in what I spoke and discard what you didn’t like.” Some critics worried whether RSS chief brought ideas from 19th Century talking of controlling consumption. They forget that idea of sustainable consumption, the environment is the new economics; what they learnt about producing and creating demand is an old wasteful economic model. For example, an ex-film producer Mansoor Khan ( of Jo Jeeta who Sikandar fame) has done more than a decade of study to come up with a book ‘The Third Wave’ where he proves that the way world defined growth and consumption is no more viable and limiting consumption and working on lower expectations is a must. Resources are finite. Giving an example of how government should work, Shri Bhagwat questioned whether Air India was poor or was its management poor. If management is poor, give it to professionals who can run it well. But, no country bargains away its skies, it should be handed over for management to Indian companies, not foreign companies. He also reminded that the assets of Air India include its routes, its airports, its slots in airports, hangars etc. Many editors and anchors got stuck with only the issue of Air India and claimed that RSS and BJP had differing views on the economy. They forgot that many nations don’t sell their national career and give control of airspace to foreignowned airlines. It is not an outdated notion. We also know that Air India was exploited and sponged off by ministers of UPA government and before them, it was one of the rare airline making good profits when overseas airlines were making losses. Its most strategic revenue making assets –its profitable routes were ‘gifted away’ to foreign airlines, it was used as a personal fiefdom or jagir by successive ministers. So, it has nothing to do with economic policies or differences between BJP and RSS. On all other economic fronts, like any public body that too such a large organisation, has every right to express its opinion and let the government of the day know what people on the ground are feeling about different policies. Most importantly, I see no major differences in what BJP government is doing on the economic front and what RSS

views are on the economic front. Decentralisation the keystone of economic planning is being pushed hard by this government. Supporting farmers not only in actual farming but also buffering them from seasonal highs and lows by working on supply chain and creating food processing business opportunities; and dismantling stifling agriculture selling policies, reforming politician controlled Mandi system are some of the policies this government is implementing. The most important is a practical and much better Kisan BimaYojana that would cover him against most possible disasters as compared to previous policies. Most important point of Indian economic policy is whether the benefits reach the last man in the queue. I think, on this Modi government has scored big. All the policies are directed towards the most deprived and suffering sections of the society. Beginning from SwachhaBharat, that can bring huge indirect benefits in health, this policy helped women reclaim dignity and get away from harassment they faced every day. This government has introduced revolutionary Health Insurance, Life insurance for poor at lowest possible rates. Gas in every poors’ home, electricity in farflung areas that lived without power even after 70 years of independence, Jan Dhan Yojana, Direct transfer to beneficiary accounts and host of other policies have been directed towards poor and deprived sections of the society.Efforts to clean up the economy and make it more transparent with GST, demonetisation and strict action against the corrupt has given renewed velocity to the economy and results are showing. Both RSS and BJP have been inspired by holistic, integral approach of Hindu way of life. There can be the difference in approach to policies as one organisation is working in the society while the other party is running a government. As RSS chief said, policies depend on the situation prevailing at a time, so BJP government has to implement its policies based on government’s limitations, while RSS can only speak of broad contours and directions. So, leaving aside the media perceived differences in RSS and BJP in economic policies, I think it is a big change that the nation today wants to know what RSS thinks on various issues, including economy. It has helped correct the prevailing but wrong impression of the people that RSS has no economic thoughts or that RSS lives in the past. Its view that India should have its own model of economic development and growth, not copy other models, is slowly gaining acceptance. —Organizer.org

NEWS Sangh lights a ‘Hindu sentiment’ crackerSilent drive against ban The BJP and the RSS appear to have launched an underthe-radar campaign on the Supreme Court ban on the sale of firecrackers during Diwali in the National Capital Region, seeking to give a communal tinge to the verdict and questioning why similar restrictions had not been imposed in connection with festivals of other religions. BJP leaders refrained from speaking on record, wary that a section of the urban middle class was in favour of the firecracker ban, but privately felt the restrictions were against “Hindu sentiments” and that the Supreme Court should review its judgment. The leaders also felt that the ban would harm the interests of small traders, who have already procured firecrackers and will not be able to sell them. “That firecrackers cause pollution is understandable, but why target only Hindu festivals? Other religious festivals too cause many other different forms of pollution and the Supreme Court should also ban them,” a BJP spokesperson said. Another spokesperson felt that Diwali firecrackers kill mosquitoes, which cause dengue and chikungunya, and so people should be allowed to light them. The leader said that despite the ban, people in large numbers would buy crackers from markets outside the NCR and burst them as there is no ban on bursting crackers. RSS ideologue Rakesh Sinha said that while the con-

cern over pollution was justified, the ban should not be selective and should be extended to all other festivals that cause various kinds of pollution. “I appeal to the Supreme Court to broaden its verdict and include all festivals and all occasions where firecrackers or other things are used, which create pollution. Nobody can support anything that causes pollution, but the ban should not be selective,” Sinha said. He felt that if firecrackers are a source of pollution, then factories where they are made should be closed. According to Sinha, there were discussions in society about various forms of pollution caused during (the festival of a religion) and because of loudspeakers used in (certain places of worship). The BJP sensed that a large section of its voters was upset over the firecracker ban after Union environment minister Harshvardhan was trolled on social media for posting tweets welcoming the verdict. Traders have urged the BJP to protect their interests and take steps to get the ban lifted. Following the Supreme Court ban on Monday, Harshvardhan had posted several tweets with the hashtag #GreenDiwali. “Welcome decision by the SC on ban of firecrackers sales in NCR. Comes as a huge support for my #GreenDilwai initiative for our environment,” one of the tweets said. After being slammed by pro-BJP twitterati, the minister deleted the tweets yesterday.

Later, he received complaints from traders in his constituency — Chandni Chowk in Delhi. “I am very concerned about small traders after the ban on crackers a week ahead of Diwali. Ultimately, who will bear their loss?” another minister from Delhi, Vijay Goel, tweeted yesterday, flagging the case of traders, strong votaries of the BJP. A spokesperson for the Delhi BJP, Tejinder Singh Bagga, has declared that he will distribute firecrackers among children living in slums. “I plan to buy firecrackers worth Rs 50,000 and give them to children living in slums so that they can celebrate Diwali. It will not be a violation of the Supreme Court (order) because it has only banned the sale of firecrackers, not bursting them,” Bagga said. Prafulla Ketkar, the editor of RSS mouthpiece Organiser, tweeted: “In the name of being secular, modern & progressive the Hindu ethos of this land has been targeted. The United Hindu Front, a fringe group, today issued a statement terming the Supreme Court verdict an “assault on the Hindu religion” and said the contention of the top court that firecrackers caused pollution was “baseless”. The front demanded that the ban on the sale of firecrackers be lifted and threatened to protest outside the Supreme Court if it was not done.

Inspect all childcare homes run by Missionaries of Charity: Maneka tells States Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has ordered all the States to get the childcare homes run by the Mother Teresa-founded Missionaries of Charity (MoC) inspected immediately following the surfacing of cases of alleged illegal adoptions carried out by them, the Ministry said in a statement. Ms. Gandhi also directed the States to ensure that all the childcare institutions (CCIs) are registered and linked to the country’s apex adoption body within a month. According to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, the registration of CCIs and their linking with the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) is mandatory, but some orphanages had challenged the validity of the clause, an official in the Women and Child Development Ministry said. Ranchi incident A shelter home run by the MoC in Ranchi was allegedly involved in “selling” three children and “giving away” another one. Approximately 2,300 CCIs have been linked to the CARA since December 2017, while about 4,000 more are still pending for linkage. Ms. Gandhi has expressed displeasure over the fact that the children in the 2,300 institutions linked to the CARA are yet to be brought under an adoption system. According to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), 2,32,937 children are currently under the care of the CCIs — both registered and unregistered — in the countr

MUSINGS by Gadfly

The fault is in our stars and ourselves

In her new book (The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter) about decluttering called dostadning, (do means death and stadning means cleaning), Margareta Magnusson says this process of clearing out unnecessary belongings can be undertaken at any age or life stage but should be done sooner than later, before others have to do it for you. “Generally people have too many things in their homes,” she says in a YouTube video. “I think it’s a good thing to get rid of things you don’t need.” The idea is that when others have to do it for you posthumously, it can never be done right & the task is overwhelmingly sad, hence unfair on your loved ones. We in India have known about dostadning (death cleaning) for centuries. We call it Vaanaprasthaashram. I read the review, not the book. My ‘death cleaning’, begun 30-odd months before reading about this book, was caused by some scary brushes with mortality that so far have luckily turned out to be false alarms. My decluttering uncovered an interesting article about astrology by Dr. P.V. Vartak of Pune, India. Dr. Vartak reportedly has the attributes of a Historian, Astronomer, Astrologer, Mathematician, Philosopher, Counsellor, Orator & Author. I had not heard of him when I read his ‘treatise’ on astrology in a magazine. It speaks to the duality of our questions about astrology. Superstition or useful peak into/warnings about our future? His answers are likely to change the minds of most doubting Thomases because he himself began as a huge skeptic, not as a believer. He makes a compelling argument that when a doctor’s diagnosis is wrong, we blame the doctor, not the science of medicine. Yet every time an astrologer’s prediction goes wrong, we blame astrology, not the person reading it wrong. Citing his own experiences of right & wrong predictions, he says when a prediction is wrong, it’s a matter interpretation, not a flaw in the science of astrology.

He goes back in human history to study where, how & why astrology began. I’m not interested in the history of astrology, only in as accurate a peek in my future as possible. But his point about the origins of astrology shed a revealing light of credibility. He says that in the ancient times when too many events in people’s lives didn’t make sense - a seemingly happy life cruelly interrupted by sudden & very bad series of events – they looked to available sciences for answers. When science failed, they were left with an unsatisfying explanation; that it was the will of God or ‘God works in mysterious ways.’ Those with scientific minds were not satisfied. So they began looking for answers in the sky. Astronomy had already opened some doors - effects of sunlight (heat) & moon (cooling effect), various mental outbursts associated with Amaawaasyaa, no-moon night in the Eastern hemisphere & Poornina,, full moon night in the Western world, effects of solar & lunar eclipses. Those familiar with both words – astronomy & astrology – and worlds, know it’s not a big leap between those two. Those looking for explanation of events in our lives discovered something in the stars that other sciences had no time for. Many events in life on earth found their origin & meaning in the stars. As always, every new discovery about anything you can’t see or put in a bottle, brings a few superstitions. More importantly, astronomy refused to recognize astrology. It still does, just like the medical establishment saw practitioners of Ayurveda as quacks, not doctors. Who knows, astronomy & astrology may one day merge. So when Shakespeare wrote (1599) in Julious Caesar, the lines (Cassius to Brutus) - “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves….”, the connection between stars above and events below had already been made. But that statement about ‘fault not in our stars’ is only half true.

A person can change history by his/her own actions without waiting for things to happen (caused by the stars above) but the consequences will still depend on good or bad alignment of stars; and it will look like a co-incidence. If the stars were in Caesar’s favour, Senators around him would have saved him & not joined in. Here’s an interesting parable about our choices & their consequence. Farmer’s horse runs away. ‘Bad luck,’ neighbour says, ‘Maybe,’ farmer says. Horse comes back & brings a second horse. ‘Wonderful,’ neighbor says. ‘Maybe,’ farmer says. Farmer’s son takes the new horse for a ride. He is thrown off the horse & breaks his leg. ‘Bad luck,’ neighbor says. ‘Maybe,’ farmer says. Next day the military drafts all young men except the farmer’s son. ‘Wonderful,’ the neighbor says. ‘Maybe,’ farmer says. Moral of the story - We never know what our choices will bring. The unpredictability of the consequence of our choices is caused by the unknown; a confluence of stars, our thoughts & actions in this life & our karma from past life. Still the severity or lack of it will depend on supportive or hostile stars. In good times, errors of judgment will go unnoticed but when the stars turn against you, the same ‘errors’ of judgment will turn you into a Harvey Weinstein; a minor mistake combined with a stock market crash (hostile environment) could turn into a disaster. All of us have experienced fortune & misfortune coming out of nowhere, that no chart predicted. The fault is not in our charts or in the science of astrology but in our astrologers. Dr. Vartak writes about common sense in forecasting. The size of a windfall in a chart depends on whose chart it is. For a chart belonging to a middle-class person, the windfall would translate into a one to twelve months’ salary. The chart of a millionaire, however, will mean a much larger windfall, like in millions. A

seer without common sense who doesn’t ‘see’ the difference will only give a bad name to astrology. An interpretation without basic common sense/knowledge, is like a doctor seeing prostate problems in a woman or pregnancy in a man, though these days (of gender fluidity), prostate & pregnancy, like sexual preferences, could swing both ways. Still blaming astrology makes as much sense as blaming medical science. Even in the consequence of supportive or negative stars, the degree of consequences varies from person to person, circumstance to circumstance, and beggars to millionaires. One astrologer sees negative stars & predicts catastrophe. Some other only sees minor setbacks. Both of them can be right. No one predicted my younger brother’s untimely death, not from his chart not from his wife’s chart not from my chart (death in the family). No astrologer warned any of us about such horrible news. Conversely, nor did any seer predict the few financial windfalls that came my way over the years, as they do in everyone’s life. Besides financial windfall is not a happiness quotient. Good health – both physical & mental – is. When I was to move to America in 1977, someone who was like a mother to me and also more than an amateur astrologer, said, ‘You’ll die with a million dollars under your pillow (meaning ‘in your account’).” I said, “I hope I’m in good health to enjoy it. What use is a million dollars if I’m bedridden.” Anyway, when our ancestors looked to the stars for answers, they found plenty cause & effect. We know today that when Mercury is retrograde – three, four times a year, 20-some days each - it leads to misunderstandings, technical glitches of all kinds, disruptions, cancellations in many wellplanned activities & breakdown in communications,. (It’s going to be retrograde from July 25 to August 18. You

can observe the retrograde effects yourself.) Thanks to my late friend & astrologer Bob S. (he used to be good-humoured about his initials but that’s another story), I also learned about moon being void-of-course. Once the moon has made its last major aspect before changing signs, the Void of Course phase of the Moon begins. Ignoring what ‘aspect’ or ‘changing houses/signs etc.’ mean, all you need to know is that you are advised against initiating (beginning) anything during that phase. Activities started during this phase of the Moon do not generally end up successfully. Usually going on a first date, the first day of school or a job, moving to a new place/house are better avoided for good results. Years of observed experience have a made a believer out of me. Once Bob explained it to me sometime in early 1980s, I started tracking the retrograde dates. I noticed most of those effects in my life & around me. Once I started believing it, I stopped looking for the retrograde dates because I didn’t want to be ruled by fears. Now when things go unexpectedly wrong, I look up Mercury or Moon void-ofcourse. Right on both counts. These two – Mercury retrograde & Moon void-of-course – and some other astral positions are factored in by Jyotishi (Pandit) to decide auspicious day/time (mahoorat) for an important event. We carefully choose our doctors because health is the most important thing in all lives. A good astrologer is not even half as important. It is not a necessity but a curiosity. The good & bad that astrologers told me about my future from my chart, is to me only an outline of possibilities. If these Musings have changed any minds, remember, like the disclaimer these days below the astrology columns in various publications, it is for entertainment only. INDIA HERALD • WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2018 • PAGE 17

CONTROVERSY

Supporting Sharia Courts is one of the lowest points of Congress

By SUJOY GHOSH Senior Congress leader and ‘on bail’ MP Shashi Tharoor has stated recently that if BJP sweeps majority in the next Lok Sabha elections, India will become a ‘Hindu Pakistan’. According to reports, the MP, who is now on bail after charges of allegedly abetting his third wife Sunanda Pushkar’s alleged suicide, stated during an event in Thiruvananthapuram that if the Bharatiya Janata Party manages to repeat 2014 like success in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and gets a two-thirds majority in Rajya Sabha too, it will change the constitution and convert India into a ‘Hindu Pakistan’. Though Congress and its leaders are known for their derogatory remarks and false equivalences, they also have the tendency to stand by defending their statements with impunity. Following the footsteps of their party President Rahul Gandhi, who blames the BJP and RSS for everything under the blue sky, painting the BJP, PM Modi and the RSS as devils is the favourite hobby for Congress leaders. The irony that they so conveniently forget that it was their party which ruled the country for most of its post-independence existence is not lost on anyone. Congress, however, has a special proclivity towards Pakistan. No, by Congress’ Pakistan affinity, I do not mean Mani Shankar Aiyer’s famous request of ‘unhe hataiye, humein le ayiye’ while he was visiting the country. Congress is inspired from Pakistan at a deeper, stronger level. Their behaviour has been a subtle, slow reflection of Pakistan’s ideologies. It is not at all surprising that not only Tharoor stood firmly by his remarks, but even his party refused to openly condemn it. They just gave an excuse that the remarks were made in Tharoor’s personal capacity. Deeply hateful, derogatory and shameful remarks towards a democratically elected Prime Minister like PM Modi has become a thing of the past for Congress. Now they have brazenly started to make such remarks against their own country. Most Indians would feel that equating India to the failed state of Pakistan is shameful, but not for Congress. Pakistan is what inspires them, the principles and ideologies that are followed in Pakistan run through the veins of Congress. Pakistan is a failed state. It was formed purely on the basis of hatred and one man’s hubris. The hatred that manifested its

corrupted legacy to the subsequent generations of its people has been consuming the country from within. Nurturing terrorists in its own backyard, directing all its policies and international stand only towards maligning and hurting India, allowing Islamic terrorists to prosper and eventually take reigns of power and letting generations after generations of its own countrymen succumb at the mercy of Islamic terror breeding propagandists has brought the country into a demographic, intellectual, economic and social ruin. If one looks closely, the actions a political direction of Congress, in many of its policies and tendencies has been a shadow of that mentality. Pakistan is a poor, withered, ruined shadow of the democracy it pretends to be. It is controlled by its power-hungry military and Islamic clerics who have happily thrown its population under tenets of sharia law, depravity and disease for their personal ambitions and political benefits. Let us have a look at what Congress has done or attempted to do with Indians. Recently, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board demanded that it wants sharia courts in all districts of the country, a notion that has no constitutional validity and poses a grave threat to India’s justice system. Sharia courts will mean a parallel justice system that more than 14.2% (according to 2011 census) of India’s population (Muslims) will be subjected to. A system that allows child marriage, polygamy and has provisions for rapists to go free by paying money, and Nikah-Halala. When individuals and political leaders from all over the country expressed shock over such a notion, guess who came out in support of it, Congress. Hamid Ansari, Congress leader and ex-Vice President of the country stated that Muslims have the right to have sharia courts. A party that brings ‘threats to democracy and constitution’ on every drop of a hat is ok with the idea of a quasijudicial religious body run its own courts and have its own laws inside a democratic country. The abhorrent and barbaric practice of Female Genital Mutilation that has subjected 200 million women worldwide to an extremely painful, traumatic and hazardous process was recently challenged in the Supreme Court by a group of women. Practised by the Indian Muslim community of Dawoodi Bohras, this practice traumatises thousands of little

girls every year. The person defending the practice claiming it is the religious right of Muslims to cut and bleed the genitals of little girls was Congress leader and lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Ironically, Shashi Tharoor, who has himself spoken against the practice, never considered to condemn or question his party colleague for defending this practice. Apparently, for Congress, the constitution and human rights are never in danger when their own people pose risks to its very fundamentals. Democracy is a joke in Pakistan. In years of its existence, political leaders in Pakistan have been shot, hanged, bombed and exiled after military coups. More often than not, the country is run by a puppet placed by its military leadership who is bullied and manoeuvred around by Islamic clerics. Minority Hindus, Sikhs and Christians are persecuted, tortured and sentenced to death by its dubious and partial blasphemy laws. The irony is Congress has left no stone unturned to make a mockery of democracy itself. Mani Shankar Aiyer hailed Pakistan and sought its help to bring down a democratically elected government in India. It is Congress that has persecuted and victimised individuals for exercising their freedom of expression. It has hounded, persecuted and victimised people for criticising its leadership and politics. And how often has Congress rejected the outcome of democracy because they were not the ones elected? How close is that mentality to Pakistan, where democracy is but a tool in the hands of the ISI? Indian media has a very fleeting memory when it comes to Congress. Though it is very keen to recall every random incident to malign BJP, it has very conveniently forgotten the darkest phase for India’s democracy and constitution, the emergency, which was the gift of Congress. If India has ever come close to becoming like Pakistan, it was the 21 months from June 1975 to March 1977. Indira Gandhi had shredded every democratic value, conscience and ideology into pieces when she forced the nation into the dark era of emergency. Publications were shut down, journalists were gagged and opposition leaders were put behind bars for her own personal ambitions. The fact that a leader from the same party is preaching about the constitution and its sanctity is the only thing more ironic than Indira’s descendants and the direct benefactors of

her legacy calling PM Modi a dictator. In its years of power, it is the Congress which has damaged, mocked and changed the constitution to satisfy its aim. In his haste to blame BJP for trying to create a Hindu Rashtra, Mr Tharoor even forgot how his own party has very recently gone into every possible path to subvert and mock the judiciary. Not only Congress and its leadership have called every decision by the Supreme Court ‘biased and BJP-controlled’ whenever it is unfavourable for one of their own, they had stooped into a new low when the party tried its best to pass an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India. The idea of BJP being harmful to India’s democracy and the constitution is laughable, especially considering the way Congress and its Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi treated Shah Bano, a poor, old women who became a victim of triple talaq and whose democratic rights were blatantly stripped away because Rajiv Gandhi’s government was more keen to appease the sharia abiding AIMPLB than honouring judiciary and constitution. Choosing Muslim appeasement over Indian justice system, going to great lengths to appease sharia supporters, persecuting and harassing dissenters, subverting the democratic process and throwing away the nation’s best interests for narrow political gains, if all of that sounds like something that happens in Pakistan, Congress has done it all in India itself. Pakistan loves its terrorists. And often, it blames the ‘Yindoo Baniyas’ of fomenting terror while feeding milk to the Kalashnikov wielding snakes. Guess who else thought the Hindus are more dangerous than terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiyyaba? Of course, Rahul Gandhi. A WikiLeaks confirmed that Rahul Gandhi thought “Hindu Extremists” are more dangerous than LeT. It was the Congress that worked hard to further the “Hindu Terror” narrative. It was the Congress that exonerated Pakistan and worked hard to implicate Col Purohit and Sadhvi Pragya. It was Congress that wanted Pakistan off the hook, and Hindus be branded terrorists. Pakistan would love to see India broken into pieces. It is their official policy. Now, do we remember Rahul Gandhi supporting the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ in the name of freedom of expression? Do we remember P Chidambaram wanting “autonomy for Kashmir”? Pakistan wants to tear India in the name of caste.

Do we remember Rahul fomenting Dalit troubles? Do we recall the letter that surfaced that said Congress was to provide funds, arms and legal help to Maoists? Do we remember the caste trouble during Padmaavat and how Congress was at the helm? Pakistan maligns the Indian Army. Do we remember Congress asking for proof of surgical strike, thereby maligning our forces? Without even going into the details of massive corruption charges that the Congress leaders have against them, (another similarity to Pakistan), the very tendencies and intentions of the party make it clear that their claims of the sanctity of the constitution and democracy are an empty rhetoric. It is the ‘Hindu’ BJP, which they so love to paint as communal evil, that has first made the injustice called triple talaq a criminal offence. It is the Hindu-BJP that is now pushing to ban the abhorrent practices of nikah halala and polygamy. The Hindu-BJP that has stood up against FGM. The same BJP that Congress has painted as regressive and patriarchal is now helping to bring down section 377 that criminalises gay sex, something Congress failed to do in all its years of power and, in fact, they upheld 377. Tharoor’s idea of Hinduism and the imaginary dangers he and his party men perceive from a Hindu Rashtra are beyond the scope of this article. But the Congress and their supportive media should realise that repeating a lie in polished English will not make it the truth. A democracy is the will and power of its people. The people of India have decided to throw the Congress out of power and have elected BJP with an overwhelming mandate. No amount of EVMblaming, conspiracy howling and propaganda peddling will hide the truth that Congress was rejected by the people of India. Whether the BJP will repeat its 2014 victory or not is again in the hands of the people, but it is high time that Congress and its leaders realise that undermining the popular mandate and passing blatant appeasement as ‘secularism’ will not work anymore. If they begin introspecting their faults and address the real issues that are holding the party from winning elections, maybe they will realise that blaming EVMs and proclamations of threats to the constitutions will no longer fool Indians. —OPINDIA.COM
