Houstonian to head Pakistan’s top Univ Prof. Javed Ashraf has been named to head Pakistan’s Quaid-i-Azam University, according to a notification from Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain. Dr. Javed Ashraf has been a Houstonian since 2003. He has served as Dean of the Cameron School of Business at the University of St. Thomas. He has also held the Cullen Endowed Professorship of Economics at the University. Dr. Ashraf served as the Director of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Prof. Javed Ashraf in Karachi from 2000 to 2002. Under his directorship, IBA became the first public-sector institution in Pakistan to offer four-year bachelor’s program in the country. Later, Dr. Ataur-Rahman as Chairman of the Higher Education Commission ordered all universities in the country to adopt the four-year degree program. While at IBA, he received an award from President Pervez Musharraf for his contributions to education in Pakistan. Quaid-i-Azam University (formerly known as Islamabad University) is the country’s flagship university in the federal capital. Dr. Ashraf is leaving for Islamabad on October 9 to take the oath of office from President Mamnoon Hussain. Dr. Ashraf becomes the second Houstonian to wear the robes of a Vice-Chancellor in Pakistan. A few years ago, Dr. Ahmad Durrani left Houston to head the Lahore University of Management Sciences.
