Lt. Gov. Patrick praises Indo-Americans; U.S. Rep. Olson hails Indo-U.S. relationship

Gala From Page 1 25 years, another 15 million people will be added. Why? “There is no income tax or business tax in Texas and we are working on bringing down the property tax,” Patrick said, enabling everyone to achieve the American dream. Texas is home for 48 Fortune 500 companies, he added. This economic success is not only due to business friendly policies, but the credit goes to the people of Texas, he said. The philosophy is that the government should step back and let the business grow. In this context, he referred to the success of the Indian American community and its contribution to the success of the state. “Family ethics and belief in god are symbolic of Texas,” Patrick said. If Texas were to be a country, with its 10th largest economy in the world, Texas would be larger than Russia. Governor Greg Abbott’s policies are also responsible for the state’s burgeoning economy and in his absence from the state, Patrick would be the acting governor. In a lighter vein, Patrick said it was a good day for him because as senator, his daily allowance would be a mere $20 a day, but as acting governor he got $421 that day. Patrick recalled his early days in radio broadcasting in Houston. In 1988, his station began broadcasting an Indian music program by Meena Datt. As a result, the station’s popularity grew and he became a popular personality. Thus, the Indian American community was responsible for his becoming the Lt. Governor, Patrick said U. S. Rep. Pete Olson, recognizing the overwhelming presence of the Indian American community in Fort Bend County and the outstanding community presence of India House in the greater

Houston area, said the relationship between India and the U.S. is much more than celebrating holidays and festivals. Like the gigantic export of LNG from Texas to India or the manufacturing of F-16 fighters in India, both the countries shared a lot in trade and commerce and in bilateral relations, Olson said. Both the countries, at the receiving end of terrorism, should and would work together in rooting out terrorism, he said. He singled out Pakistan in this context. Olson also added that India needs to have a permanent seat in the U.N. Security Council and deserves to be prominent among the world leadership. Governor Greg Abbott and Sen. John Cornyn also sent their brief congratulatory messages via video. Earlier, India House President Jugal Malani welcomed the guests to the gala. India House has laid an impressive and strong foundation by showcasing itself at the forefront of the community with educational programs, healthcare services, wellness programs and social events, he said. India House Executive Director Col. Vipin Kumar (Retd.) made a presentation on India House’s expanding programs and services including free food distribution to needy families, after-school program, free yoga, meditation, Hindi and Sanskrit language classes, free technology classes for seniors, free legal consultation, free line dance classes, table tennis and cricket. At the gala, Chowdary and Angela Yalamanchili, were presented the Lifetime Achievement Award. Restaurateur Kiran Verma received the Entrepreneur of the Year award and Sewa International Houston Chapter President Gitesh Desai, was conferred with the community service award. New trustee of India House, Hersh Kumar, in his remarks, pointed out that successful entre-

By MANU SHAH “Too many lives have been lost. Enough is enough.â€? With these words, Col. Raj Bhalla summed up the sentiment at the prayer service held at India House on February 20 for the 42 CRPF personnel killed in a terror attack in Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir. The names of the martyred soldiers were read out during a somber candlelight service while the gathering observed a minute silence in prayer for their souls. “Shahido ko Shat Naman.â€? President of India Culture Center Nisha Mirani saluted the brave sons of India and in a voice tight with emotion stated “India can ďŹ ght back and will ďŹ ght back.â€? India’s Deputy Consul General in Houston, Surendra Adhana, read out Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the terror attack and the message of condolence from the White House. Col. Bhalla, who served in the Indian army for 20 years before moving to the US, clearly touched a nerve when he spoke of the â€œďŹ re that was burning in every Indian’s heartâ€? at this “evil dastardly act.â€? An admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, Col. Bhalla disagreed with his quote “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,â€? in this case, because “when tyranny crosses all limits, stern action must be taken whether the world becomes blind or not.â€? Composing himself as tears fell, he highlighted the need for abolition of Article 370 of the Indian constitution and stated that it “is about time J & K should be open like any other state‌ new industries and employment will come to the state and there will be progress and development in every ďŹ eld.â€? He also called for the media to counter the misinformation and fake news being perpetu-

ated by radio stations run by Pakistani Americans. The prayer service drew over 300 Indian Americans and representatives of elected oďŹƒcials like Jay Guerrero from Senator John Cornyn’s oďŹƒce, Sam Merchant from Congressman Al Green’s oďŹƒce, Jason Fuller from Senator Ted Cruz’s oďŹƒce, Xavier Herrera from County Judge K.P George’s oďŹƒce and Regina Recino from Congressman Dan Crenshaw’s oďŹƒce who all expressed their “solidarity with India.â€? Leaders of various Indo American organizations also voiced their abhorrence at this act of terrorism. IAPAC President Hasu Patel, spoke of “not allowing our resolve to weaken.â€? IACCGH Executive Director Jagdip Ahluwalia drew attention to the names of the jawans on the banner where you “realize the diversity of India‌ the prosperous India that these terrorists cannot accept.â€? Somansh Agarwal of HGH observed that the soldiers demonstrated the highest level of the selessness that the Bhagwat Gita speaks of, IMAGH representative Latafath Hussain called for India to “give such a reply that every wouldbe terrorist would think a 100 times before committing such an act.â€? IACF’s representative also spoke of “rising above just condemning the act and taking a strong stance.’ Earlier, two patriotic songs were rendered beautifully by Smriti Srivastava accompanied by Govind Shetty on the tabla. Speaking from a personal perspective having served in Kashmir for three years, Executive Director of India House Col. Vipin Kumar cited a chronology of recent terror attacks and concluded with the question on everyone’s mind -“When will this stop?â€?

Protests erupt against Pakistan over Pulwama massacre

The Indian diaspora expressed its anger at Pakistan by taking to the streets all over the world. Frustrated over the continuing ghastly acts of terror committed by various terrorist groups spawned and sustained by the Pakistani state, the patriotic Indians residing all over the world are taking up the cause of defending the motherland in ways where they can make a difference. The protests signify outward expression of popular sentiments, but in the background several groups are gearing for an all-out comprehensive effort to address the problem in their own respective domains, including but not limited to public advocacy and political intervention. One of the signature protests was organized in Houston, where close to 200 patriotic NRIs assembled in front of the Pakistani Consulate on a working day, and engaged in a verbal war of words against the handful of Pakistani counterprotestors consisting largely of consulate employees. The Pakistani consul-general reportedly left the consulate, where the Indian-American protestors observed due restraint in light of severe provocation by the Pakistani counter protestors, a spokesman for the protesting group said. The Pakistanis trampled the pictures of martyred Jawans at Pulwama under their feet, and confirmed the Islamist nature of Pakistani State by repeated proclamation of the Shahada and chants of “Allah-O-Akbar”. On the contrary, the Indian side stuck to the essential secular framework and did not utter a single word that would have provoked religious tensions. At one point the Pakistanis pointed to a respected elderly Sikh gentleman, in their attempt to divide Sikhs against Indians on account of Khalistan. The Sikh gentleman gave them a fitting reply, upon which the whole Indian contingent erupted in ‘Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal’ – proving yet again that no amount of mischief can take the Sikhs away from the

In a unilateral gesture of religious tolerance, the Indians briefly suspended the sloganeering when a counter-protestor appeared to kneel down to say the Islamic prayers. However, there was no let up on religious fanaticism from the Pakistani side. Achalesh Amar, coordinator of the Houston chapter of the Friends of India Society International, and chief organizer of the Houston protest, outlined the purpose of the protest by stating: “the Indian-American community of Houston stands in solidarity with the people of India in condemning this dastardly act of terrorism emanating from Pakistan. Our heartfelt homage to the brave soldiers. The Jihadi terrorist ideology that wants to attack and destroy our way of life, our civilization and our democracy must be crushed, and will be crushed very soon. We extend our full support to Indian government for launching offensive to weed out the scourge of terrorism from safe havens in Pakistan.” He further added: “Pakistan is

the fountainhead of global terrorism. Any western country which has participated in war on jihadi terror has suffered from attacks coming from terrorists based out of Pakistan. By doing these protests outside the consulate we want to send a clear and loud message that terrorists and terrorist sympathizers would be eliminated.” Amar further informed that in an unprecedented show of unity, the NRI communities

came together in New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Jersey, San Antonio, Memphis, Detroit, Indianapolis, Troy, MI, and Allentown, PA (USA), Toronto and Vancouver (Canada), Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, and Hamburg (Germany), Sydney and Melbourne (Australia), London (UK), Auckland (New Zealand), and Tokyo (Japan), to stage similar protests. Further, NRIs have

vowed to continue their engagement to keep up the pressure against Pakistan. “The incident has really shaken the community and every Indian-American wants to do his and her part to stop killings of innocents,” said Dr Veena Ambardar, a Kashmiri Pandit community leader. The protest was supported by Kashmiri Pandits of Greater Houston and the local Indian Community at-large.

NEWS Daya reacts to murder-suicide Obituary: Lakshmiben Thakkar (1933-2019) On February 18, our community experienced a tragic murder-suicide. Initial reports state that a South Asian man shot and killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself. The family’s friends spoke to reporters of the couple’s involvement in the community and said they saw no indications of problems. All expressed their deep love for the family. Throughout the day, we at Daya spoke with community members who expressed their pain and frustration. We are encouraged to see respectful conversations that speak to the broader problem of domestic violence in our community. The reality is that the dynamics of South Asian culture keep domestic violence a shameful secret within the family. Nonphysical forms of violence such as emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse are minimized or ignored. However, these types of violence have severe traumatic effects not only on the victims but also the children who bear witness. Survivors are often blamed and shamed when they seek help and are pressured to “stay together for the children’s sake.” In many cases, they lose everything when they come forward. The stigma of divorce keeps families unhealthy and unsafe. This social stigma creates the added risk of losing one’s entire support system. As a community, we must do better. Research shows us that South Asian survivors face

challenges in mainstream systems due to language barriers and lack of cultural expertise. Daya’s goal is to ensure that South Asian survivors do not fall through the cracks due to issues such as language, culture, and social stigma. As we write these words, it pains us to know that Houston has had 5 murdersuicides just this month. These deaths could have been prevented. Domestic violence crosses all nationalities, incomes, education levels, and social standings in the community. The South Asian community is not immune to domestic violence, and continued silence will only perpetuate abuse and keep us all unsafe. In 2018, Daya supported 462 survivors, however, research demonstrates that 1 in 3 women are impacted by domestic violence. There is still so much work to be done. It is with a heavy heart that we at Daya recommit to our work and we ask that you join us. Believe survivors. Pay heed to their words. They do not deserve any form of abuse and it is not their fault. Hold abusers accountable. Raise the bar for what is acceptable in our community. Prioritize safety and compassion above all else. By breaking the stigma, you create a future where children not only understand what healthy relationships are, they demand them. To the victims – Your death will not be in vain. We will

Mrs. Lakshmi Ben Thakkar, belovedly known as Mataji, passed away February 14, 2019 at the age of 86. She was the founder and served as the Chairman of Shirdi Sai Jalaram Mandir in Houston, until her health started deteriorating a couple of years ago. Many Houstonians know her for her kindness, giving nature and her magical charm in getting social service activities done in an effective manner. Born on October 6th, 1933 in Gujarat, India, Mataji came to the United States with her family in 1976. Despite her limited education and limited financial resouirces, she was instrumental in building a strong family. Starting with a couple of Sai Baba devotees in 1995, she spearheaded the construction of a massive temple in Sugar Land drawing over hold you in our hearts as we continue in our mission to end domestic violence in the South Asian community. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, please reach out through Daya’s confidential helpline at 713-981-7645. 3000 devotees. She accomplished this mission, mainly through her unrelenting devotion, her commitment and support from several volunteers. Despite her age, she used to spend most of her time either at the Sai Baba Temple in Hillcroft Street (Houston), or attended some type of social service activity benefitting others. Her devotion to Baba was reflected in her kindness to the devotees and to all those who came attended the temple at any time. Although she was never aware of the word ‘women empowerment’, she helped numerous women through financial and emotional help to succeed in their lives. People all over the country, when they came to Houston and visited the Shirdi Sai Temple, and added their meet-

ing with Mataji to their bank of sweet memories. While spearheading the construction of Shirdi Sai Jalaram Temple, she has supported all religions and faiths by attending all their functions with full of heart. Whether it is a celebrity or an active Congressman, she was able to connect to anyone effortlessly with her smiling face, and active presence. Several devotees inspired by her, have actively started new devotional Sai centers after moving away from Houston. For many Houstonians, there was never a dull moment in their interactions with her. As a symbolic of her jovial nature and realized state, she used to say even in the last moments of her life that “ After I die, you all should not cry. Instead, you should eat, drink and enjoy; but don’t forget to pray”. Her cheerfulness and jovial nature despite problems around her is inspiration to all of us and the new generations. Several hundred devotees, and well-wishers attended the funeral service held on Feb. 17, 2019 at the Sugar Land Mortuary to pay their homage. She is survived by her husband Bechardas Thakkar, two daughters, three sons, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A special Bhajan in memory of Mataji was held at Shirdi Sai Jalaram Mandir (13845 W Bellfort Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77498) on Saturday, Feb. 23.

COMMUNITY Houston Maharashtra Mandal presents play on Chhatrapati Shivaji HOUSTON: The Houston Maharashtra Mandal (HMM) will present on stage an epic play titled Janata Raja (The Wise King) on Saturday, March 9 at Stafford Centre on Cash Road. The play is a dramatic presentation of the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji, a warrior-king (1627-1680 AD), who founded the Maratha kingdom in the western region of India. A tribute to Shivaji’s life and times, Janata Raja is presented on a multi-level stage as a dramatic spectacle, featuring as many as 100 actors. This is a full-length historical opera, which is enacted with clockwork precision against the background of splendid scenography and digitally recorded 4-track sound. Janata Raja was written by Maharashtra state’s popular historian, Babasaheb Purandare. On 2019 Republic Day, Babasaheb was awarded with the Padma Vibhushan Award. Popular historian Babasaheb Purandare Staged in both Marathi and Hindi languages, Janata Raja can be a unique, outdoor theatrical presentation with gigantic sets rising up to three stories, elaborate props and costumes, including elephants, horses,

camels and even bullock carts. Janata Raja is considered a marvel of the theatrical world. Since 1985, more than 1,250 dramatic enactments have been performed in both urban and rural areas of Maharashtra and in several other regions of India. More than 800,000 people have attended live Janata Raja performances. A typical performance has approximately 6,500 people in the audience. In the United States, Janata Raja was presented at the BMM (an organization of people of Maharashtrian origin in North America) convention in Boston in 1997 with the active participation of local Americans of Maharashtrian origin. Janata Raja was also performed at London’s Wembley Arena on February 6, 2015. In Houston, HMM will present a similar enactment with the active participation of our local membership. Two directors associated with Babasaheb Purandare are conducting the rehearsals. Janata Raja has been performed to critical and audience acclaim wherever it is presented. When the play was presented in New Delhi, the performance was appreciated by former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Janata Raja shows are never

Something to ponder....about Alexa By CHANDNI KAMNANI Alexa – What’s the date today? Alexa – I need to dress for work, what’s the temperature this morning. Alexa- What’s on my calendar today? After a tiring day at work, I crash on the sofa with a cup of coffee to relax and get my mind o work. As always Alexa turns on the TV and changes the channels at my command. My day is almost over watching the phone, the computer and then the TV. I retire to bed for the night. Alexa comes to my aid again, to turn o the lights and adjust the fan speed. Who is Alexa? Well for those who don’t know - she is our intelligent personal attendant. Wow! We have actually evolved. We have the world at our ďŹ ngertips 24/7, thanks to our smart phones and now we have Alexa. Humans have become both crazy and lazy! Growing up, we were “Alexaâ€? for our parents and elders. These chores were designated for us children and we would do it. People who had no children would get up and do it themselves because they had no choice. However, today we have a choice in Alexa. Is this good or is it making us lazy? Let’s give it a thought and ponder at some simpler thoughts of everyday life. There was a time when we would get up from the chair and help ourselves to a glass of water from the jug at the other end of the dining table. Then there were those moments when we would open the door and stick our nose out just to feel the morning weather. (Now “Alexaâ€? tells us the weather conditions). Another memory is of ipping the pages of a book just to ďŹ nd that one paragraph that had the hidden clue to solve the mystery at the end of the story. (Now you can

do it on Kindle) That beautiful era of music where meaningful words were hidden in the lyrics or the countless times we would get up to rewind and forward the tape on the cassette player just to memorize those lines to sing on our own later. (Now it is on a pen drive and we can loop it) And again, how many of you remember those black phones with a dial and a long wire sitting in the family room corner. Every house just had that one phone back then and the shrill ring would make us jump to answer it no matter how far we were. (Now it answers automatically) What about “the doorbell still so common in India. We would run to answer the door all day long! (Now you can see who’s at the door with “Ring) Likewise, the TV had no remote control then. We would get up from the sofa without cribbing and change the channel we all wanted to watch. (Now your voice command changes the channels). I have more. Running up and down the stairs for errands for the family, helping with odd jobs our neighbors were too old to do themselves, running into new people and making new friends at the market or movie theater and always ready to lend a hand to someone in need. Boy! We really were active then. These are my memories and I will let you, my readers, go back in time and recollect moments and memories of your yesterday! We are living in the 21st century now. We need to keep pace and be a part of the human race, but do we realize how lazy we are becoming? We have lost the charm of doing things for ourselves. That little feel of everyday chores is getting lost. A simple walk to turn on the light, get up to answer the phone, etc. made us exercise our muscles. (Now we go to the gym to exercise them)

We can start our day by going out and looking up at the sky every morning, breathing in some fresh air and feeling good instead of looking at our phones ďŹ rst thing in the morning. Sunlight gives us vitamin D and on beautiful days, are we outside, enjoying the warmth of the sun or shopping at the outlet mall? Or are we lazing at home, on our laptops doing online shopping? We have become lazy to move around and that puts an end to interactions with people, places and the feel of new things in the world. We are happy being couch potatoes and enjoy the company of our screens. The company of machines has become more important to us than the company of people. We are so proud of ourselves for these achievements. But instead of moving forward in the energy form of the human race we are going backwards because we are stopping ourselves doing what we have already mastered and enjoyed. Think about it. We are deďŹ nitely gaining a lot but we are also losing as much. I agree that this is the real world now and there is no looking back. But ask yourselves this; is it that necessary to constantly be living in this Gadget & Gizmo society and relying on machines to do our every chores? We have the foundation of ‘Do it yourself’ so let’s live up to it. It is indeed necessary to be a part of this mechanical world but do not ďŹ x yourself as a component of the machine. We are still humans, with a mind of our Own, so let’s spring back into action and not rely on machines as much and interact with people more. Till next time Namaste and Jai Hind!!!! HSA prides itself in building a strong network of young Hindu Americans, and it looks forward to organizing other events in the future that will link students from its various branches. HSA has been reorienting itself in recent months to doing more grassroots work. “We have been focusing more on accomplishing work on the local and branch level,” said Mrinalini Vijalapuram, National President of the Hindu Students Association. “We have been doing this through many different activities including interfaith events with other religious organizations, building community partnerships, and expanding into other campuses that don’t already have HSA branches.” While the cancellation of Gateway may come as a disappointment for many prospective attendees, HSA hopes to get feedback from students on other projects and events that interest its branch members. NEWS IAF strikes on JeM camp in Balakot: Pakistan summons India’s diplomat NEW DELHI In the early hours of Tuesday, 12 Mirage 2000 fighter jets of the Indian Air Force (IAF), armed with Israeli Precision Guided Munitions (PGM), took off from the Gwalior airbase and hit the largest training camp of terror outfit Jaish-eMohammed (JeM) in Balakot inside Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale earlier in the day confirmed that India had “struck the biggest training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed in Balakot”. At a press briefing, he said, “In this operation, a very large number of JeM terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and groups of jihadis who were being trained for fidayeen action were eliminated.” Tensions between India and Pakistan have been on the rise since the Pulwama terrorist attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. JeM had claimed responsibility for it. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has condemned India’s “incursion”. The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemns the action against an OIC founding member state, the bloc said in through a press release. It urged India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid any steps that would endanger peace and security in the region. It called upon both parties to act responsibly and encouraged them to seek peaceful solution to current crisis without resort to use of force. It also called on them to embrace dialogue and work towards de-escalation of current situation as a matter of priority. The OIC is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations with a membership of 57 states spread over four continents. Pakistan summons India’s diplomat Pakistan summoned India’s acting High Commissioner in Islamabad and condemned the “violation of its territorial sovereignty” by Indian fighter jets. In a statement, the Foreign Office said that at “approximately 02:54 hours (local time), 8 Indian aircraft were effectively intercepted by the Pakistani Air Force jets and forced” to return. The Indian jets “randomly released their ordinance which landed in an uninhabited remote area,” it added. “The Acting Foreign Secretary summoned the Indian Acting High Commissioner and strongly condemned the Indian violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it said. It said that the “baseless, reprehensible Indian claims of targeting a large terrorist camp and resultant causalities to placate Indian domestic audience and electioneering were

strongly rebutted.” The Acting Foreign Secretary categorically stated that Indian “aggression was a threat to regional peace and stability and would get a befitting response by Pakistan at a time and place of its choosing.” The official also condemned the “baseless” Indian allegations against Pakistan’s involvement in the Pulwama terror attack. J&K parties call for de-escalation J&K parties, including National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and People’s Conference (PC) called for de-escalation between India and Pakistan in the wake of the air strikes. “Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) hit Indian forces and claimed the attack. In turn, Indian forces hit JeM and owned that air strike. It’s now time for cooler heads to prevail. War is never an ideal option to resolve disputes. Let’s go back to the India-Saudi joint statement of last week,” said former chief minister and NC vice president Omar Abdullah. Former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said since Pakisntan has claimed that no casualties were reported despite the Indian Air Force violating Line of Control, they (Pakistan) should adopt a reconciliatory stand as opposed to further escalation. “Or else, an already volatile situation will spiral out of control and as usual Kashmiris will be the biggest casualties,” she said. PC chief Sajad Lone said he hoped an end to all types of violence. “Pacifist to the core, I am. But the reality as it stares in our faces is that this retaliatory action will actually be the start of the unlearning process for Pakistan. This will set the benchmark for deterrence. And eventually crowd out the cycle of violence,” said Mr. Lone. High alert sounded across Gujarat High alert was sounded across Gujarat on Tuesday after India successfully carried out a ‘non military pre-emptive’ strike targeting training camps of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in Balakot area in Pakistan. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that alert was sounded after the Air Force carried out strikes in Pakistan, targeting terror bases. “Gujarat is a border State and we are on high alert. We have put all the police personnel on duty and their holidays have been cancelled,” CM said after a function in Saurashtra region. Pakistan will surprise India: Ghafoor The Pakistan Army confirmed that Indian fighter jets dropped “four bombs” during an operation on Tuesday but downplayed its significance, saying the Indian attack was

repulsed and that while going back the aircraft “jettisoned their payload”. Pakistan’s military spokesperson Asif Ghafoor has said his country will “surprise” India. “Pakistan will retaliate on diplomatic, political and military fronts to India’s action,” the spokesperson said. “Prime Minister Imran Khan told the army and people [to] get ready for any eventuality. Now it is time for India to wait for our response. We have decided. Wait for it,” Mr. Ghafoor said. The spokesperson also denied India’s claim that 350 terrorists had been killed in the attack on the Balakot camp. “Even if there were 10 bodies, there would be blood,” he said adding that the site was open for international inspection. Mr. Ghafoor confirmed that the payload from the Indian aircraft had landed in Balakot. Western Naval Command on high alert post-air strikes In the wake of IAF’s preemptive airstrikes on terror camps in Pakistan, the Western Naval Command in Mumbai is on a high alert and “fully prepared” to tackle any eventualities, an official said on Tuesday. The Mumbai Police are also on a high alert following the airstrikes, the official said. “After the airstrikes carried

out by the Indian Air Force (IAF) on a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp in Pakistan in the early hours on Tuesday, the security agencies have put the city on high alert,” the official said. “The Western Naval Command remains alert 24X7. Now, it is fully prepared to deal with any untoward situation in the wake of the airstrikes in Pakistan,” he said. The Western Naval Command, headquartered in Mumbai, is one of the three formations of the Indian Navy. India briefs envoys of P-5 countries India on Tuesday briefed envoys of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council about the IAF’s “nonmilitary pre-emptive action” on the biggest training camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed, which had claimed responsibility for the Pulwama terror attack. Sources said Foreign Secretary Vijay K. Gokhale and secretaries in the External Affairs Ministry briefed foreign envoys, including those of the five permanent members (P-5) of the United Nations Security Council — the U.S., Britain, France, Russia and China. Mr. Gokhale had met around 25 envoys, including those from P-5 nations, a day after the Pulwama terror attack in which over 40 Central Reserve

Police Force personnel were killed. Residents in Balakot thought a quake had hit the region Residents in the quake-prone Balakot town in Pakistan’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday said they were woken by “loud explosions” and thought a fresh tremor must have hit the region when Indian Air Force jets pounded a large terror-training camp. Balakot town in Pakistan’s north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was destroyed during the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and was rebuilt with assistance from Saudi Arabia. Residents in the mountainous area town told BBC Urdu they were woken by loud explosions. Residents in several towns near Balakot reported hearing explosions early on Tuesday. Mohammad Adil, a farmer in Jaba village, said he and his family were woken at about 03:00 by “a huge explosion”. He said they thought an earthquake must have hit the region. “Then we heard jets flying over. We went to the place in the morning. There was a huge crater and four or five houses were destroyed,” he said.
