to the memory of my dad late Sh. Satish Kumar Seth who taught me the virtues of staying ahead of the curve and stand up against conventional wisdom

Preface A bunch of class notes, scribbled in a manner which even trained pharmacists would struggle to decipher, turned into a book in 2004. A book which was written off by some purists, nonetheless written with lots of labour of love has reached its fifth edition. It is an unassuming journey for any author, more so for someone, for whom Forensic Medicine is no longer a profession but a hobby! Fifth international edition has been thoroughly revised and some of the chapters rewritten especially wrt. the new law against Rape and a chapter on Biological Stains. The book has evolved keeping pace with the changing trend of examination papers. This book would help students not only understand but more importantly! remember the “must knows” of Forensic Medicine. The focus is to help students grappling with information overload & need for rapid revision(s). Students would be able to grasp the critical areas of Forensic Medicine with ease. This is NOT a textbook but an enzyme! to help text of the standard textbooks cross the “Blood Brain Barrier”. I have used my experience as a student and knowledge as a teacher in making this book “reader friendly”. I have made the best effort to make this book complete yet concise. I request all readers to give their valuable suggestions to improve this book further. Most books are written keeping in mind ‘the subject’, I’ve written this book keeping in mind ‘the student’. I’m fully aware that “a good book cannot replace a good teacher” and firmly believe in the mantra — Read less, Study more…

x Review of Forensic Medicine To my virtual students on Facebook and Whatsapp!, all credits to them for keeping me! and the knowledge of Forensic Medicine, on my finger tips. Special thanks to my younger brother Amit for letting me use the computer more often than my actual share while I was writing the first edition (Those days, we had only one heavyweight desktop). To my beloved wife, Tanu, for her constant support and encouragement and also to my sons Shreshth and Saksham for bringing new meaning to my life. Above all, to my mother, Smt. Urmil Seth, whatever I’ve achieved, is the outcome of her unconditional love and blessings.
