Prince resigns as Director of Schools By Christen Coulon Managing Editor

McNairy County Director of Schools John Prince announced last week that he would be resigning his position at the end of this school year. Prince said that after considering his options he felt it was the best decision. “After much thought and prayer, Mollie and I both agreed that it was time to let someone else step in and take on the role of Director of Schools. We are confident that this is best for our family and my health.” Prince took over the poJOHN PRINCE sition at the beginning of 2014. He announced his resignation effective July 6, last Thursday. Director Prince has served in the position for more than 27 months. In his letter to the Independent Appeal, Prince shared a list of accomplishments as director as well as improvements which were made in several areas of the schools that he hoped would benefit the staff and students in the district in the future. “I am so thankful to have worked alongside the amazing employees in McNairy County Schools, and I’m excited about where the district will go from here,” Prince said. Last Monday night the American Cancer Society and local Relay for Life members sponsored a Cancer Survivors Dinner at the Selmer Community Center. Many survivors were surprised to learn the Country Music Star Darryl Worley would be making an unannounced performance at the dinner. When asked why he came out to the dinner Worley joked, “Because they asked me to.” He said that a lot of the local survivors received treatment at the The Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center at the Hardin Medical Center and it is a big deal to see them thrive and support them after treatment. “When they asked me to show up for this, I was all about it,” Worley said. “I had some time off and was able to make it work, and I’m thrilled about that.” Darren Bowers from Relay for Life said that most of the materials for the dinner were donated, and more than 120 survivors and family members attended. Bowers thanked Worley and said his appearance “meant the world” to the survivors at the dinner.

Tennessee’s First Lady Crissy Haslam visits with Kim Worthey’s first grade students at Ramer Elementary School last Tuesday afternoon. Haslam visited Ramer on part of a 95-county tour promoting her “READ 20TN” initiative. Only 43% of Tennessee third graders are reading proficiently. “My goal with this program is to have 75% of third graders reading proficiently on grade level by 2025. This school is doing well and if we can get parents or guardians to read twenty minutes a day, the core of this initiative, children are more likely to succeed in the world,” said Haslam. “There is research to support that the more parents read, sing, share rhymes and just talk to their children exposing them to language skills and read as often as possible just twenty minutes a day and encourage them with their homework, it makes a big difference in their language skills.” Children should be exposed to 10,000 words before kindergarten. Haslam said, “They don’t have to understand every word, we just need to expose our children to more words even if reading the same books over and over. We are improving across the state with education initiatives. Haslam met with the student body and shared her passion for reading and fielded questions from the students before taking time to read to a first grade class. She shared her appreciation to Ramer Elementary administrators and teachers on a great school and exceptional reading program. Haslam will travel across the state promoting READ 20TN. The program allows students to receive 120 hours of reading time a year, can potentially increase lifetime earnings by $50,000 for each year they read and children are three to five times less likely to drop out of school. You can follow “Read20TN” on Twitter or at tn.gov/read20.

County Mayor says keeping hospital questionable By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

County Mayor Ronnie Brooks updated the County Commission on the status of the Selmer hospital at its meeting last Monday. The county does not have right of first refusal on the hospital property and it will not revert to the county if it is no longer used for a hospital. The value of the property is being assessed by owners Community Health Systems. “At this point, an inpatient facility is questionable,” Brooks said. The hospital will be decommissioned May 18. “Realistically, I don’t see how anything can happen that quickly,” Brooks said. Ambulance service by EMS and air transport of patients by Hospital Wing is still available, Brooks said. Commissioner Jay Weatherford said that the contract for ambulance service was terminable at the will of either party upon 30-days notice. This contract is with the county, rather than the hospital. Brooks said the activity at the hospital was rerouting external sewer lines. Ronnie Brooks read a proclamation honoring Iona

Marsha Blackburn is running unopposed in the Republican primary for the Seventh District seat in the U. S. House of Representatives and Tharon Chandler, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn. is running unopposed in the Democratic primary. Independents Leonard D. Ladner, of Hohenwald, Tenn. and Travis Page, of Clarksville, Tenn. also filed their petitions to run for this office. Adamsville native Jeremy Durham will be running for reelection in the state house 65th District. He faces three opponents in the Republican primary: Stacey L. Givens, Shane McNeil and Sam Whitson. Holly McCall is running for the Democratic nomination for this seat. Durham has been accused of inappropriate conduct toward female Capital Hill employees. He has denied these allegations.

Humphrey, wife of the late Dr. Thomas Neal “Bud” Humphrey at the County Commission meeting last Monday in Selmer as her 100th birthday approaches Sunday. There will be a reception at Humphrey’s home near the UPS building in Selmer Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The commission approved a new county purchasing manual, which will move the county towards centralized accounting, according to Budget Committee Chairman Jim Rickman. “This will improve the purchasing process. This way we will be sure to get purchase orders prior to any purchases being made, making sure those funds are available in those line items,” Rickman said. “This puts more responsibility on the officeholders,” Brooks said. In the Road Board report, Chairman David McCullar said the bid for the bridge at New Hope Road had been awarded to Volunteer Construction at a total cost of $358,000. The contract must be approved by the state and county will only have to pay 2 percent of the total cost or $7,058. Construction is estimated to begin in a couple of months. The commission voted to close a 1.3-mile section of Stout Road near McNairy. There was no opposition by

adjoining landowners. There is nothing but timber along this road. Two state aid paving projects left over from last year at Rocky Knob began April 6. Bids on the Forty Forks Road project will be opened April 14. The community cooperative purchasing agreement was deferred as commissioners were not given a copy ahead of time. Brooks said that this would give the county more purchasing power at no cost to the county. A 401k deferred compensation plan for county employees was approved. There is no cost to the county from this, other than administering deductions. The plan is sponsored by the U. S. Treasury and administered by the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System. Dwight Garner and Linda Dewberry were appointed to the County Equalization Board. The commission approved a resolution approving updating the mitigation plan required by the state. All municipalities in the county must approve the updated version of the plan. This will allow the county and cities to continue to be eligible for Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and Federal Emergency Management Agency grants. This plan outlines the responsibilities of local governments to prepare and recover from disasters.

Lawsuit avoided: Bethel Mayor credits IA newspaper article By Christen Coulon

Grant that the town’s Water and Sewer Department would be in trouble by next winter. The town also announced a 34 percent water loss due to two leaks last month which have since been repaired. The town also announced that several of the water bills for customers got stuck at the Memphis Post Office and many residents did not get their bills on time. Bizzell reminded water customers that all bills are due regardless if the bill arrives in the mail or not. In their road report, Bizzell said that they plan to patch several roads as soon as they get dry weather. The board praised the response of the Bethel Fire Department to the March 25 Selmer fire. The department had some of the first personnel on the scene after the fire call went out and their members played a vital effort in controlling the downtown blaze. The town also announced that they have been served with a lawsuit by the engineering firm TLM over a never completed Downtown Improvement Grant. Bizzell said that the firm has been paid more than $42,000 and said that they now want an additional $13,000. Bi-

The budget was a major area of concern as the Town of Bethel Springs held their monthly meeting last Monday night. Mayor Gary Bizzell Jr. said that the town was contacted by A2H about the remaining work to their water lift stations. It was reported here, after last month’s meeting that the town was considering legal action, but Bizzell said that after the meeting A2H agreed to do what it takes to get everything working. “I don’t think they knew how many people read the newspaper in McNairy County,” Bizzell said. The town also announced the purchase of a $49,000 generator, and discussed the issue of faulty sewer pumps. It was announced that the town had lost 198 pumps in the last year, but they were now purchasing better pumps which should have a longer lifespan. However the work to the sewer is just a stop-gap Bizzell said and he said that if the town cannot get a recently submitted Community Development Block

Underdogs Vt. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz helped their causes with victories in the Wisconsin primary April 5, though front runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump still held a significant lead in the delegate race. Republican Cruz defeated billionaire businessman Trump by 48 to 35 percent of the vote, with Ohio Gov. John Kasich coming in third with 14 percent of the vote. Cruz won 36 delegates to six for Trump. Kasich received no delegates. Sanders defeated former Secretary of State Clinton by a margin of 57 to 43 percent in the Democratic primary. Sanders received 48 delegates to 36 for Clinton. Last Saturday, Sanders won the raw vote in the Wyoming caucuses, but tied Clinton in delegates with seven apiece. Sanders has now won eight of the last nine contests. Trump leads Cruz 743 to 545 in the delegate race, according to AP. Trump needs 494 or 57 percent of the 854 delegates yet to be picked in order to have the 1,237 needed for nomination. Cruz needs 692 or 81 percent of future delegates. Kasich remains at 143 delegates would come up short of a majority even if he won all of the delegates yet to be chosen. Kasich’s only hope is if no one has a majority on the first ballot and enough delegates become unbound and switch to him on subsequent ballots. Most pledged delegates are required to vote for the candidate to which they are pledged for one ballot, though some states, like Tennessee require them to stick with their candidate for two ballots. Counting superdelegates, who may switch their votes, Clinton leads Sanders 1,756 to 1,068 and leads him by 1,287 to 1,037 in pledged delegates. Unless some superdelegates switch their votes, Clinton only needs 627 or 29.4 percent of delegates yet to be chosen to reach the 2,283 needed for nomination. Sanders needs 1,315 or 61.6 percent of delegates yet to be chosen minus any number of superdelegates that switch their votes. The next primaries in both parties are in New York April 19.

The Governor’s Foundation for Health and Wellness today announced McNairy County has been named a candidate for official designation as a Healthier Tennessee Community. Healthier Tennessee Communities are those that encourage and enable more physical activity, healthy eating and tobacco abstinence at the local level. The program takes a community-wide approach to improving Tennesseans’ health by engaging the local leaders of cities, towns, counties and neighborhoods. “Research has shown that we are much more likely to change our health-related behavior and establish healthy habits when we are encouraged and supported by others – when we are in community,” Governor’s Foundation CEO Richard Johnson said. “That’s why making health and wellness an integral part of life where you live – and with the people who surround you – makes such a positive difference.” In Tennessee, one in four adults smokes, and one in five high school students uses tobacco. Approximately 31 percent of the population is classified as obese and an additional 34 percent are overweight, and type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure are at epidemic levels. “The McNairy County Health Council community partners are proud to promote healthy choices in an effort to improve the quality of life and employment opportunities in our area,” McNairy County Public Health Educator Beth Hamilton said. “We recognize that becoming a Healthier Tennessee Community means being better able to attract quality jobs by increasing productivity and reducing absenteeism in the workforce. Small changes over time will make this an even better place for families to live, work and play.” To be designated an official Healthier Tennessee Community, McNairy County has identified local programing, events, and wellness champions to lead the initiative that engages people in workplaces, schools, and faith organizations. LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Prince details accomplishments during tenure as McNairy Co. Director of Schools McNairy County Director of Schools John Prince announced recently that he would be resigning his position at the end of this school year. The following list, written by Prince, shows some of the work which has been done during his term. Changes made in McNairy County Schools since January 2014. Overhaul of Maintenance Department: Supervisor of Maintenance position was created and staffed, three new maintenance personnel have been hired to bring the total to four plus one supervisor, the schools have purchased three trucks and a mini-excavator, the overall maintenance budget has increased from $249,000 to a little more than $500,000; that is a 100% increase in funding and a 150% increase in the number of personnel in the department. Overall, the Maintenance Department has made a major shift from being reactive to proactive. The schools have one dedicated maintenance person for HVAC to maintain, diagnose, prevent issues. There is a maintenance crew performing preventative maintenance on school roofs and working with local and state agencies to acquire vehicles/equipment at the lowest cost. The schools are now working on a five year plan in which major issues such as HVAC and roofs will be in a rotation of preventative maintenance. Technology Department changes: The schools hired a new technology director, increased the salary for technicians, organized a plan for technicians to rotate between schools so all schools are properly serviced, increased technology budget from $100,000 to $325,000; that is increase of 225% in funding for technology, secured multiple grants and the infrastructure has been vastly improved. SPED department changes: The schools have hired a new supervisor of special education, the unnecessary position of consulting teacher was eliminated, more SPED teachers have been hired to lower the studentteacher ratios in outlying schools where some SPED teachers had anywhere from 35-50 Individualized Education Plans to monitor and maintain with only one teacher to do the paperwork and still try to provide quality instruction. Prince said that SPED department has had excellent reviews through the state monitoring process. Prince said that the schools have worked on the consolidation of the central office, technology, Federal Projects, CTE, human resources and financial offices into one location at the McNairy County Government Annex. He said that they are now more efficient with an easier method of communication and meeting. He said that School Nutrition will move there as soon as the county refinishes the floors in the old lineman’s lounge. Prince touted the financial state of the district and said that it is in better shape. He said that in the three budgeted years prior to his term that there was a combined required debt service which required forgiveness on the part of the county commission in the amount of $850,000 In his first budget year the schools saved $390,000 which was put into the fund balance. In 2015-2016 they plan to be able to save in several areas and use savings to address balance on MCHS roof without asking for any additional help from the county commission. Where we are headed for 2016-2017? He said that the schools are sticking to a budget development calendar unlike in the past. Currently, leadership from the board in this area is strong and involved. He said that the Salary/Supplement Task Force will make recommendations on improving salary/supplement scales that are nearly 20 years old. The plan may take 2-4 years to implement in phases. This year, he said that the board will have a budget adopted 45 days before the county commission approves; this has never happened before. Amendments for the current year will occur in April, May, and June rather than waiting until the last minute. Plans for amendments will be made quarterly in FY17 starting in January 2017 after the second quarter or earlier if a major change needs to take place. Prince said that salaries have been increased in the following areas, District level secretaries and bookkeepers, the technology supervisor, the SPED supervisor, for bus drivers, for classroom substitutes, in the Transportation Department, and for school nurses. He also said that certified employees received a $1,145 increase in the salary scale steps and a $575 No-

vember lump sum increase. He said that there are plans for salary increases in the following areas for the FY17 year: Cafeteria employees, school based secretaries and bookkeepers, custodians, classroom aides, for certified employees’ November lump sum will increase by using all of the $373,000 of Salary Equity Money from the Tennessee Small Schools fund. Prince also said that certified employees will receive another increase in the salary scale steps, but the amount at this time is undetermined. Prince said that the Building committee meets regularly, has completed the purchases of properties adjacent to AES and SES. They have also completed multiple projects such as the MCHS roof, the MES roof, the MES field house, the chillers at SMS and AJSHS, he also said that multiple HVAC units have been installed. Paving of lots has begun with SMS being in most need with major improvements being done at MCHS in regard to their ceiling tile. AJSHS will also have their gym air conditioned for the first time since it was constructed. The MCHS field drains have been replaced, the MCHS football practice field and permanent softball field have been completed, the Ramer lagoon ponds have been cleaned and reworked and several other projects have been tackled. In the area of Curriculum/Instruction, Prince said that Professional Learning Communities have been developed and teachers are collaborating with like minds with all same grade/subject level groups have time to

meet, collaborate, and share. He said that a $380,000 Math/Science Partnership grant was obtained and our math and science teachers have collaborated with like minds in Hardin and Hardeman Counties by sharing resources, developing resources, and having access to new supplies for their classrooms. He said that the 7th grade mathematics pilot has been a success and said that county-wide benchmark assessments have been developed and used in many 3-8 classrooms. Teachers are now able to communicate, compare, and plan together. During his term he said that McNairy County shifted from the bottom in the SW Core of 21 counties to the very top in math improvement in grades 3-8. Standards-Based progress reports have been developed in grades K-2 that identify standards and skills students need to master in order to be successful in the next grade. Conversations with parents have improved as a result. He also said that specialists have been hired for K-2, and they work with students and primarily teachers every day to strengthen instruction in those grades “The CTE department has grown to the point where we have approximately 33% of our high school students identified by the State as CTE students,” Prince said. “In particular the Welding classes at AHS and the Engineering classes at MCHS have garnered students from the other high schools in the county. We are cooperating, collaborating, and students are reaping the benefits. John Prince, McNairy County Director of Schools

MCHS Baseball play three tough games to prepare for Independent Appeal Spectacular By Drew Wheeler Interim Sports Editor

set of three contests against Hardin County and South Gibson. While South Gibson isn’t in the tournament this weekend, the Tigers from Hardin County are (albeit in the opposite pool), and though the Bobcats split the series with them, this experience could prove handy if a final-day matchup with the Tigers were to manifest itself. Last Thursday’s game against the Tigers took place in Savannah as undefeated sophomore Peyton Childers took the mound looking to maintain his blemish-free mark for the season. MCHS HCHS

McNairy Central teacher Jerry Lott has announced that he will retire as a full-time teacher after this school year. No worries, sports fans - Lott will continue as the head coach for the Lady Bobcats in basketball and soccer. He is expected to work next year on a 120-day contract that will account for 2/3 of a regular teacher’s contract assignment. Lott is a Lifetime Wellness (formerly called Health & PE) teacher. He has been a teacher for 43-years and the basketball coach for 39 years. Lott told his players this morning about his retirement plans. They just went back to working on training and conditioning after the announcement. “I’ve been thinking about retiring for a while now,” said Lott. “I still plan to coach and to teach 120-days.” Lott is the all-time leader in coaching wins and is in the top five in the state for coaching wins in girls basketball. The time spent coaching basketball will not count as part of assigned days. When quizzed about how long he plans on remaining as coach of the Lady Bobcats, the old man did not hesitate to answer as he does with most questions. “I plan on doing it as long as I enjoy coaching,” said Lott. “I imagine that I will keep coaching as long as my health is good.” McNairy Central is likely the only high school in the state that has two retired teachers as their head basketball coaches. Brian Brown works on a 120-day contract as well.

The usually unflappable young righty was shaken early on in the game, letting the top half of the Hardin County order score an unanswered run in the first and then a pair more in the second. Childers lasted two innings in the contest and allowed three runs, earning six after his early exit. Childers will likely man the mound for several of MCHS’ games over the course of the tournament and should regain his typical form. On the offensive side of the ball, the MCHS bats lay dormant to a dominating start from Tiger Nick Godwin, who tossed seven sound innings for Hardin County. The Bobcats roughed up Godwin in their final frame of work, threatening a comeback before the Tigers slammed the door on the late MCHS assault. Sidney Rickman took the ball from Childers in the second inning, striking out four and walking the same amount, allowing no runs to cross the plate. Casey Coleson ended up finishing out the game for the ‘Cats, tossing almost two innings of work, walking none and notching two strikeouts. The Bobcat push of offense was directed by Logan Roberts, whose powerful grand slam in the last frame cleared the ducks of the pond and ended the shutout bid.

LADY CARDINALS WALLOP MIDDLETON, 11-0 by Ethan Huggins Sports Writer

In a district matchup, Middleton traveled to Adamsville on a cool, windy day, and they were not ready for the Red Attack that the Lady Cards had ready for the Lady Tigers. AHS MHS

Staff Photo by Ethan Huggins

Makenna Harwell delivers from the circle for the Lady Redbirds. Harwell, a sophomore, impressed on both sides of the ball against Middleton.

11 0

Makenna Harwell for the Lady Cardinals was ready to pitch and throw a quick game for the Lady Cardinals. Quickness was a key factor in the game as in the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Cardinals came out and scored six runs in the inning to give them a quick lead. The offense was spread well, as a host of Adamsville players got hits and drove in runs in the bottom frame. In the top half, the Lady Tigers tried to respond, but they were mowed down pretty quick

and the Lady Cards had another turn at the plate. Harwell was trying to get a basehit, but fouled off pitch after pitch, all in the same direction as Head Coach Todd McGee. After a whistling shot that Coach McGee had to fall on the ground to avoid, Harwell got her hit, much to the liking of McGee, albeit to the chagrin of his own personal safety. In the same inning, Senior Gabby Morris scored a run in the inning off of Freshman Gracie Hutton. Another run was plated in the innnig to make the score eight to nothing after two. The Cardinals were looking to end the game quick in the third inning by scoring two runs, but the Middleton defense put a stop to that as they wanted to score to come back in the game. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals got another run on the board as Hutton drove

in Morris again to make the score nine-zilch. In the top of the fifth, the Lady Tigers were gotten out in quick succession, and in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Cardinals had the bases loaded with Morris at the plate. She knocked in two on a double to end the game by run rule, and the Lady Cards won by a score of 11 to 0. No stats have been reported for Adamsville.

Adamsville Cardinals split double header games with rival Wayne County by Ethan Huggins

four-two, but with the third out in the inning, the Cardinals were not able to come back.

With a scheduling conflict, Wayne County High’s baseball team traveled to face off with nearby rivals Adamsville in two back-to-back five inning affairs that saw both teams winning one a piece. AHS WCHS

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2016

2 4

Senior Austin Cotner took the mound in the first game for the Cardinals. “Ready to get into a rhythm on the mound” appeared to be Cotner’s gameplan for the first inning of play. The Wayne County team, however, did not share that opinion as Cotner was knocked for a first inning home run to give Wayne County as quick one to nothing advantage. Fate did not bode well for the Cardinals in the next frame as Wayne County got on the board again to give them a larger lead. Looking to make a comeback, the Cardinals, knowing that they needed to strike, did so in the fourth inning by knocking in their first run of the game to cut the lead down to three. With the final inning set to play, the Cards knew that any momentum would help their cause and they were able to score another run in the frame to make it

No stats were reported for AHS. In the second game of the day for the Cardinals, the loaded offensive team came out strong as the first game was apparently only a warm up for Adamsville. AHS WCHS

11 1

In the game runs were a plenty as the smaller Wayne County squad did not have enough bodies on the team to come out as strong as they did in the first game against the Cards. The runs came early for the Cardinals as a host of Adamsville players knocked in the runs and crossed the plate. With so many balls put in play, the Wayne County team did not have a chance to make good plays, which only led to more runs for the Cards. Because of the back to back games and the Cardinals had a nice lead, the younger members of the team had a chance to get some playing time, which helped all around. No stats were reported for AHS.

The Lady Bobcats “Filled the Hill with Pink” to support Breast Cancer Awareness last Friday evening. by Ethan Huggins Sports Writer

For the Lady Bobcats of McNairy Central, they faced a tough district test when they hosted Chester County this past week. More than just a district game, it was Fill the Hill with Pink Day to support Breast Cancer Awareness as survivor Ashley Pickens threw out the first pitch. She is the mother of Lady Bobcat player Rachel Pickens. MCHS CCHS

2 3

With the first pitch thrown, Katie Turner toed the rubber to throw for the Lady Bobcats. Turner set the side down in the first inning, taking the flight away from the Lady Eagles in the inning. In the bottom half of the first, the Bobcats got a run on the board to take a quick one to nothing lead. The top of the next inning, however, made sure that the Bobcat lead did not last too long as the Lady Eagles put on three runs of their own to make the score three to one. With the pressure on the Lady Bobcats to score more to tie the game up, Turner did her part to make sure the Chester County did not score another run in the game. Turner threw lights out as she was able to cut the Eagles offense down while her teammates backed her up on the field. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Turner knocked a screamer over the fence for a solo home run with two outs to cut the Lady Eagles lead down to three to two. With only another two innings left to play, the Lady Bobcats had an easier road to tying the game. The top of the sixth inning showed a rally by the Lady Bobcats as two runners got on base, one on each corner, but with two outs, it was high time for some opportune hitting. The Lady Eagles got on their toes for any ball put in play. The Lady Bobcats tried to tie the game, but were unable to score in the opportunity. With the score still three to two in the final inning for the Lady Bobcats, they were still mounting a comeback with their best hitters on deck. The Lady Eagles bunkered down and played a great game that the Lady Bobcats could not pierce, and after going down in order in the inning, Chester County pulled out the win in a great game with an unfortunate ending for the Lady Bobcats. MCC 0 CCE 1 The game was played between two evenly-matched squads, testing one another’s mettle with push after push for the net. “The Cobras played great from the start and kept the ball on Chester’s side of the field for much of the first half,” Floyd said. “With about seven shots in the first half, we

The story of this game was told at first by two sets of two runs scored, in the second inning for the Tigers and the third for the Bobcats to leave the game tied at two all. The Bobcats’ only left-handed starter, Chaseton Whitten got the nod to start the game for MCHS and pitched over five innings of ball, enduring the hit of the trio of Tiger runs due to fielding errors. Whitten dished out six strikeouts and walked a quartet of batters, managing the basepaths well, only no earned runs and a single stolen base. Jacob Jones pitched the final inning and change of the game for the ‘Cats, earning himself the win to go alongside his sterling ERA and two strikeouts of his own. The MCHS offense had a comparable game to the previous evening’s affair, spreading out the production as usual among the nine batters. A pair of Logans, Essary and Roberts, brought around RBIs, as well as Whitten, helping his own cause from the plate. Stats: (MCHS) (Offense) Logan Essary: 1/4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI; Logan Roberts: 2/3, 2 RBI; Chaseton Whitten: 2/3, 1 RBI; Sidney Rickman: 1/3, 1 R; Tristan King: 1/3, 1 R; Casey Coleson: 1/3; Thomas Stevens: 1 R; Hunter Pearson: 1 R. (Pitching) Chaseton Whitten: 5.1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 6 K, 4 BB; Jacob Jones: W (2-2), 1.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 K.

South Gibson’s chosen starter for the game was 6’2, 240 pounder Krayton Woods, recruited mainly as a defensive tackle for the Hornets football team, but certainly capable of skilled pitching, as well. Woods battled with the Bobcats over the entire seven inning affair, allowing runs in the second, third, and sixth frames, and only managing to strike out a pair of ‘Cats. Conversely, Dylan Parmely took the mound for the McNairy Central team and pitched five innings of good work, only earning two runs and walking two batters before exiting in the sixth inning. The Bobcat bats were led into battle by “Sidney Consistent” himself, who went two-for-four with a run. Austin Pace also had a run and an RBI in the contest, keeping the ‘Cats close. The Hornets also got to face Parker Childers and Briley Taylor in the game, and the pair combined for two innings of no-run ball, striking out three and earning no runs. The ‘Cats went 1-2 on the weekend, though they played South Gibson and Hardin County with a lot of grit throughout the three game series. The Bobcats are still favored to finish in the top three of the tournament, but knowing Coach Franks and his team, nothing less than first place will suffice. Stats: (MCHS)(Offense) Austin Pace: 1/4, 1 RBI, 1 R; Sidney Rickman: 2/4, 1 R; Chaseton Whitten: 1 RBI; Casey Coleson: 1 RBI; Will Jones: 1 R; Briley Taylor: 1/1; Peyton Childers: 1/2; Hunter Pearson: 1/3; Logan Essary: 1/4. (Pitching) Dylan Parmely: L (1-2), 5 IP, 3.60 ERA, 2 BB; Parker Childers: 1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 1 K; Briley Taylor: 1 IP, 0.00 ERA, 2 K.

An 18-year-old gymnastics star saw her competitive career come to a likely end with a flourish in Mississippi’s State Gymnastics Championship Meet recently in Starkville. She competed for Shining Stars Gymnastics. A 92-pound dynamo in her gymnastics Leo, Hannah Roberts finished her career with a first place in Bars, a first place in the Beam, and a second place finish in the AllAround competition. Roberts came in 7th in her division and is an alternate for the Mississippi team that will compete in May’s region championship meet. Roberts, a senior at Adamsville High School, does not plan to compete as a gymnast in college. “I was extremely nervous before the state meet got started,” said Roberts. “I prayed with my family and my coach (Tonya Duffey) which did help to calm my nerves.” Tonya Duffey, Hannah’s coach, said the late Terri Jenkins spotted Hannah’s talents at eight years old. “Terri said that Hannah was going to be something special,” said Duffey. “She has been state champion on vault, bars, beam, floor, and all-around. Terri knew what she was talking about.” The veteran gymnast said that she managed to tune

Coach Floyd’s squad have worked hard this season and their successes are spelling themselves on the record book - this narrow loss is by no means an indicator of their skills. Keep your heads up, Cobras.

Bobcats fall to Eagles on the pitch By Drew Wheeler Interim Sports Editor

The McNairy Central Bobcats soccer team faced a familiar foe on the pitch this week, squaring off with the number one ranked Eagles of Chester County. MCHS CCHS

0 2

The Eagles, currently roosting on a number one rank in the district, are in a familiar nest, so to speak, as the team found themselves at the top of the region last season as well. Last season’s contest with Chester saw the (primarly freshman) Bobcats fall 7-1, so this game marked a noticeable improvement for the older, wiser, stronger MCHS team. The ‘Cats jumped the opening kick and came out, claws bared, controlling the first 20 minutes of the match. Hunter McCullar hit the crossbar on a shot less than sixty seconds into the game and the pace did not let up from

there. The rest of the game was like a coin flip, turning back and forth, to and fro with every possession. Though opportunities were had for points to be scored, Chester’s Kyle Brown saved each of them, keeping a clean sheet through the game. MCHS’ Jacob Cotner had fourteen saves of his own, only allowing two shots to go into the net, and Ronnie Kinkennon made a lot of trouble for the Eagles on defense, as well. Coach Nick Cook said, “We have a few guys sitting out right now, so we only ran a twelve man rotation - however, all twelve guys stepped up, and we played the best soccer we have all year. I’m not concerned with the scores, I’m concerned with how we execute and how we mesh as a team.” “We did everything we could,” Cook said, “and we gave ourselves a legitimate chance to beat a really good team. We look forward to continuing the process with every match.”

For the Adamsville Cardinals tennis team, they had a bit of traveling to do as they were on the road for two matches this week. First up for the Cardinals, they played Scotts Hill at Freed Hardeman University. In girls’ single play, Addie Harvill won her set eight to one while in the other set, Sierra McCain lost her set by a score of one to eight. There were three more matches set, but the Cardinals had to forfeit those games. In doubles’ action for the girls, the team of Harvill and McCain won their set by two points, eight to six, making their record on the day two and five, while making their season record zero and five. On the boys side, Bradyen Horton won his set on the day by a score of eight to two. In other singles’ play, Jared Harvill lost his set in a close contest, six to eight. There were a few

more forfeits on the Cardinals side in single’s play. In doubles’ play, Harvill and Horton teamed up and fell in a close contest by a score of 8-9(10-8) with one more forfeit. The record for the day for the Cardinals was one and six while the overall record for the boys this season is one and four. The next day, the Cardinals team had to travel across the river to face rival Hardin County. In girls action, Addie Harvill lost by a score of one to eight while Sierra Mccain also went down in defeat by a score of two to eight. For the girls side, there were a few more forfeits. In doubles’ play, Harvill and McCain lost by a score of four to eight, making there record zero and seven on the day and zero and six on the young season. In boys play, Jared Harvill was defeated by a score of four to eight while Brayden Horton loss his match, two to eight. In boys doubles Harvill and Horton loss by a score of three to eight, making their record on the day zero and seven, and their record on the year one and five.

Hannah’s mother Tabitha Roberts said she FROM PAGE 3B was in tears and her husband Nicky said it was the first time he had cried at a sports event since his last high school football game. She may be tiny, but that is no indicator of strength and ability to fight off injuries. Hannah has suffered torn ligaments in her ankle and has constant back pain that is just part of being a gymnast at a high level. “Hannah has wanted to eat, sleep, and breathe gymnastics since she went to practice with her friend Katie Beth Tennison,” said her mother Tabitha. “I am very proud of her because she has put in lots of hard work over the past 10 years.” Duffey’s photography hobby helped Hannah land a spot in the Ozone Leo catalog as one of their Ozone Angels and will be in next year’s catalog as well. While her competitive gymnastics career is likely finished, Hannah will move into coaching future gymnastics at the Shining Stars gym with Duffey. Roberts plans on attending Jackson St. (CC) at their campus in Savannah for two-years. She wants to go into the medical field, but has not decided on which area yet. “We have spent lots of time and money on her gymnastics, but I do not regret one bit of it,” commented her mother. “She has improved her confidence, reached her goals, and has made some life-long friends that she would not have made without gymnastics.” Do not allow her small size to fool you, Hannah Roberts has the courage of a lion and it is apparent in all of her competitions.

Selmer Elementary School Announces March Leader of the Month Submitted Photo

Selmer Elementary School and Project BASIC are proud to announce the Leaders of the Month for March. At Selmer Elementary, we hope to encourage positive leadership skills on our campus. Each month, students are chosen from Kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms at SES for displaying particular leadership habits. Throughout the month of March, students were encouraged to synergize. Students are reminded to value other people’s differences and value other people’s ideas. At SES, students are also encouraged to be a team player and work well with their peers. They are reminded to be cooperative with their classmates and value their strengths. We are all so proud of each of these students and their willingness to be leaders for those around them. Each of these students deserves acknowledgement for this accomplishment. These students were given a special certificate and a treat to recognize their achievement. Congratulations to each and every one of you. Pictured above are, bottom Row (Kindergarten and Pre-K 5): Shyenne Freshour, Shane Hopkins, Landyn Hamm, Jocelyn Barnes-McGee, Diego Venegas, Landon Thacker, and Joseph Herrington.
