Selmer Police Cpl. Allen Sides cruiser shows damage taken during a high speed chase on Aug. 25 through Selmer and Bethel Springs.
A Selmer woman reported that two men broke into her screened porch last Monday afternoon stealing hedge clippers, a 100 foot extension cord, tools and a baseball bat. According to the homeowner Victoria Weirich she was cooking dinner after 5 p.m. with three other members of her family at home with her at that time when she heard her dog barking and saw two men
leaving her screen porch carrying several items. “What is this world coming to,” Weirich said in a Facebook post shortly after the incident. “My house was robbed while we were all home! Some (man) walked onto my back screen porch and stole our lawn tools, an extension cord and a baseball bat.” Weirich said that she then chased them down the drive way and caught one of the

Fire destroys Pharr St. residence in Selmer on Aug. 25

A late afternoon fire destroyed a residence on the 200 Block of Pharr Avenue in Selmer on Aug. 26. The fire moved quickly through the wooden structure destroying it before firefighters could control the flames. Selmer Fire Chief Anthony Carr said the cause of the fire appears to be an accident caused by a cooking fire. Carr said that response time to the blaze, which was responded to by several departments throughout the area, was slowed due to rush hour traffic at the time. The fire destroyed the home as well as most of the belongings for the family of six who lived in the home. A list of needed clothing items for the family’s two children and four adults is available at the Independent Appeal office at 111 N. Second St. in Selmer.
