Selmer Elementary School and Project BASIC are proud to announce the Students of the Month for January. January’s theme for Student of the Month was “Fairness” (based on the pillars of character each student learns) and all of these students were chosen for their ability to show this particular character trait. The students learn about character building skills in their guidance classes and also in their Project BASIC classes. We are all so proud of each of these students. It takes hard work to show “FAIRNESS” to your fellow classmates and each student deserves special recognition for this accomplishment. These students were each given a special certificate and a treat from McDonalds. Congratulations to each and every one of you. Selmer Middle School addresses changes in curriculum, testing By Patsy Moore Math Interventionist

Selmer Middle School held its fall Family Fun night last October. Dr. Brenda Armstrong and Mr. Mickey Murphy appreciated the parental support for this event. Before the pizza dinner and fun activities, Mrs. Patsy Moore talked about the Constructed Response Assessment (CRA) which students in grades 3 – 8 had recently taken. Tennessee, along with 46 other states, is in the process of transitioning to Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Student will take three Constructed Response Assessments during the 2012 – 2013 school year. The first one was given in October. The second one will be given in February, and the third will be given in May. The CRA is not like the multiple-choice TCAP tests that have been given for many years. This assessment is comprised of four tasks. The tasks are focused upon specific grade-level focus standards that have been chosen for this year. While each grade level has different focus standards, they all share the same eight mathematical practice standards. These practice standards are incorporated into all math lessons every day. It is vital that students become familiar with the focus standards and math practice standards, because the CRA tests are scored according to them. The first assessments have been scored, and these will be used to help students and teachers as they prepare for the next assessment. Parents were informed that math has been the primary focus of CCSS so far. English/Language Arts (E/LA) is slowly being phased in this year. The importance of reading comprehension was emphasized during the presentation by Moore. Parents were encouraged to use online resources to become familiar with the changes that are occurring. Also during the short presentation, parents heard about how teachers use test data to help them plan their lessons and to help them set goals. Parents were encouraged to visit Selmer Middle School with their questions about interpreting test data and how it can be used to help their children be successful students.
