Strong isolated storm slams Michie on Saturday

Tourism revenues up 3.5% in McNairy County Local leaders think more growth possible By Christen Coulon Managing Editor

Last week, Governor Bill Haslam and Commissioner Kevin Triplett, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, announced that Tennessee tourism’s direct domestic and international travel expenditures reached $17.7 billion in 2014, up 6.3 percent, and an all-time high for the state. It was also announced that locally, tourists spent a total of $11.28 million in McNairy County in 2014, an increase of 3.5% compared to 2013, generating a total of $630,000 in state and $630,000 in local tax revenues, increases of 4.6% and 3.7%, respectively. A total of 57 McNairy Countians are employed in tourism-related fields. “We have only really scratched the surface with what we can do with tourism,” said McNairy County Mayor Ronnie Brooks. Brooks said that there were several areas of the county which, with the right kind of marketing and approach could see tourism growth. He mentioned Big Hill Pond State Park as well as Shiloh as potential areas of tourism growth. Brooks said that the proposed law before the U.S. Senate which would expand Shiloh into the county at the Fallen Timbers and Davis Bridge battle sites could spur additional tourism investment. The bill was introduced earlier this year by Congressman Marsha Blackburn. The bill is now in committee in the Senate and is being introduced there by Sen. Lamar Alexander.

A strong storm caused damage to the Old Hurley Store area in Michie last Saturday which left area homes damaged and uprooted large trees. The isolated storm which struck when much of the county was experiencing sunny weather surprised many Michie residents. The property of John George and Patty Pope experienced damage in the storm and several trained spotters for the National Weather Service reported in a preliminary storm report to be a strong thunderstorm with wind damage.

Corker, Blackburn speak to county Republicans By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

U. S Sen. Bob Corker spoke to the McNairy County Republican Party Reagan Day Dinner last Thursday in Selmer. Rather than getting up on the stage of the Selmer Civic Center, Corker stood on the floor. “I’ve never got used to looking down on people,” Corker said. Corker spoke on three topics. First, was the presidential race. “Surely, you think I’m smarter than to weigh in on that,” Corker said. “I’m not really a politician. I’m not one to be thinking about the political angles. I just call them as I see them,” Corker said. Corker said that the GOP has the most talented pool of people running for President he has seen in a long time and it will take some time before we know who the top tier is or who the nominee will be. Corker said that Republicans should not wait until they control the Presidency to deal with tough issues. “The American people are very upset with Washington and from where I sit, I think they should be even angrier than they are,” Corker said. One example Corker gave of why people should be angry is the highway bill. “It’s not like Medicare or Social Security or some of the other topics that are difficult to deal with. It’s really simple math. A fourth-grade student who could count could figure out how to do it,” Corker said. There are three possible solutions, Corker said. These are spend

less on roads, send a big part of the highway program back to the states or pay for any increase in spending. Corker voted for the second alternative. Corker said a proposal in the Senate involved three years of spending paid for with with ten years of revenue. “The money we’re paying for it with is made up,” Corker said. An example Corker gave is that the bill would have paid for the spending by selling some of the oil in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, that is designed to be used only in emergencies. The bill values the oil at $89 per barrel. Crude oil is currently trading at around $40 a barrel. “We’re throwing our kids under the bus,” Corker said about the bill. Corker criticized even some Republicans in Washington for playing politics. “Good policy is good politics,” Corker said. “I hope that you will hold all of us accountable,” Corker told the crowd. Corker said that foreign policy could affect us all because terrorist attacks could happen anywhere, as it did in Chattanooga, Tenn. Corker, who is now the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, said he started out knowing virtually nothing about foreign policy. “I asked to go on the committee to broaden myself, to make myself a better Senator on your behalf,” Corker said. Corker began his remarks on the Iran nuclear deal by saying that Iran is the number one sponsor of terrorism in the world. They recently tried to kill an ambassador and supported terrorists in Iraq

that killed and maimed American soldiers. Corker said he was in favor of negotiating an end to Iran’s nuclear program. Iran has one nuclear power plant and could buy all the Uranium they needed cheaper than to enrich it with the 19,000 centrifuges they now have. “They have 19,000 centrifuges in a country that needs none,” Corker said. Iran also built a secret underground facility (Fordo) that we were lucky to find out about, Corker said. “What we’ve ended up with is beyond belief,” Corker said about the agreement negotiated with Iran by the members of the United Nations Security Council: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia and China, plus Germany. Corker said the agreement, rather than dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, allows it to be industrialized. They are allowed to continue research and development. Iran will have $150 billion in assets unfroze under the agreement and every sanction will be lifted. “I don’t think that’s very good,” Corker said about the agreement. The Iran deal is an executive agreement, rather than a treaty, and is not binding on the next president. The ban on ballistic missiles and missile testing is also lifted by the agreement. Congress has passed a bill forcing the agreement to be brought there for a vote. However, Pres. Barack Obama can veto the legislation rejecting the agreement

and both houses of Congress must override the veto by a two-thirds margin, a difficult feat. Cong r e s s passed the sanctions that brought Iran to the negotiating table. “ I ’m very conCORKER cer ned,” Iran, Corker said. some of the things she is working on in Washington. “Everywhere we go people say, ‘Tell me what you’re working on. Tell me what’s going on in Washington,’” Blackburn said. Blackburn talked about three things before the Energy and Commerce Committee, on which she serves as vice-chair. Blackburn said she is working on reigning in the Environmental Protection Agency, ending sanctuary cities, investigating Planned Parenthood and expanding Shiloh National Military Park. Blackburn and Sen. Lamar Alexander are working on the park expansion. “Part of our goal is to make sure we end federal funds,” Blackburn said about Planned Parenthood. “Isn’t it wonderful to have

somebody that understands government entities and how to balance a budget?” Blackburn said about Corker. Corker served as Tennessee Finance Commissioner and Mayor of Chattanooga before being elected to the Senate in 2006. “The nice thing about Bob Corker is that people respect him,” one of Corker’s colleagues told Blackburn. “Not only the American people, but our allies have wanted to hear what he has to say about this,” Blackburn said about the Iran nuclear agreement. Corker said that Blackburn was the epitome of Republican leadership in Washington. County GOP chairman Mike Smith introduced Selmer Mayor John Smith who welcomed Republicans to the gathering. “He’s like the Energizer bunny. He goes nonstop...You can drive

around town and see buildings going up and businesses opening their doors. He’s done a tremendous job,” Chairman Smith said. Selmer Mayor John Smith welcomed Republicans from the county and throughout the region to Selmer. “I have to be brief because Robert Lee said I had a minute until he had to sing,” Smith joked. Former Sheriff Lee’s band, Dog Creek, performed at the event. In addition to Lee, the band features County Commissioner and Adamsville City Commissioner Matt Wood and Assistant District Attorney General Bob Gray on guitars and broom maker and Governor’s Arts Award winner Jack Martin on drums. The Ramer Station restaurant catered the dinner. The Cats in Action from McNairy Central High School served the food. Mayor Smith thanked Sen. Corker for coming to McNairy

County. “With 95 counties in the state, I think you’re in the best one,” Smith said. John Smith said it was advice and support from Corker as well as Mike Smith that put him on the path that led him to where he is today. Tennessee Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture and Stantonville native, Jai Templeton also spoke. The former County Mayor told a story about campaigning for that office. He told a Finger voter he would appreciate his vote. “Of course, I was smart enough not to tell him I was running for reelection,” Templeton said. The man asked Templeton what he was running for and he said County Mayor. “Good, we sure do need one,” the man replied. “I’ve had the privilege over the past few years of being all over the

state. I haven’t found a place that I didn’t like, but I sure love calling McNairy County home,” Templeton said.

Last Thursday, local Youth Pastor John Chandler was honored for his outstanding work and accomplishments with local students by Congressman Marsha Blackburn at a ceremony at the First Baptist Church in Selmer. Blackburn said that Chandler was recognized for his work in organizing student prayer breakfasts, devotionals, youth camps, and mission trips. She thanked Chandler for his excellent work with the “Shoe Box” ministry.

Last Thursday the faculty, staff and students at Ramer Elementary were honored for their academic achievements after being named a Reward School by the Tennessee Board of Education. This recognition is given to the schools which score in the top 5 percent on their statewide tests. Congressman Marsha Blackburn and Tennessee State Senator Dolores Gresham were joined by Director of Schools John Prince to congratulate the students on this achievement. Blackburn said that the achievement was especially impressive due to the fact that this is the second time the school was named to the list in just four years.

Mitchell’s Selmer Drug Company closes: Residents bid farewell to a part of Selmer history By Janet Rail Publisher

Selmer said goodbye last Monday to a beloved business, but that is only part of the story. Many devoted patrons, family and friends came to wish Robert “Bobby” and Tommye Mitchell farewell at a reception held in their honor. Judi Mashburn, president of the McNairy Regional Alliance, presented a Certificate of Recognition for the dedication and continued service provided by Robert Mitchell to the Mitchells at the reception. Walking into the doors one last time, for many, was a kin to taking a step back in time. Many could be heard lamenting the loss of a hometown drugstore and the helpful advice of a longtime friend. The building is original to downtown and built by Carmen Smith in 1918. Even the bricks were used from a local kiln. John Curtis, his father and brother opened the Selmer Drug Company which included a soda fountain with marble-topped counter and tables which were later replaced with formica in 1945. Robert began working at the drug store as a sophomore in Selmer High School. He started dating his wife of 57 years there. In fact, they had been dating and had broken up when the school named them “Cutest Couple”. “It was so funny when it happened. It was 1953 when they named us cutest couple,” said Tommye. “I was a senior and she was a sophomore and they had to round us up for the photo,” said Robert. The photo from that day remains on the wall today. We attempted to recreate the photo at the same booth it was taken many years ago during the reception. “I made a quarter an hour when I started working at the drug store. You kids think that is insignificant but when I went to pharmacy school my tuition was $90 a quarter and I was talking to a student recently who said her tuition was over $9,000 a quarter. A lot has changed,” said Mitchell. “There wasn’t much of a future in sharecropping. My dad farmed some, I was baling hay and realized I wanted to go to pharmacy school. While working here in high school, I realized that I needed to get an education.” Robert completed pharmacy school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1957 and came back to work at the pharmacy in Selmer. Purchasing the business in 1981 from John Curtis, they renamed the business Mitchell’s Selmer Drug Company and he continued to work

“I introduced this bill because it is something the community has wanted,” Blackburn said. “We are hopeful that we can either get it passed or included in some other piece of legislation.” Blackburn said that the expansion is necessary to protect an important piece of history and she said that it could also mean more tourism dollars for the county when the park draws more tourists to the area. State-wide, tourism-generated jobs reached 152,900, with an increase of 2.8 percent. State and local sales tax revenue for the industry topped $1.5 billion, up

This has been our second family and we will miss them. It will be so difficult to get accustomed to the idea that we won’t be here. We made so many good friends,” the Mitchells said. The Mitchells have three children, John Mitchell from Memphis who was in attendance, Darwin Mitchell of Germantown and Mandy Lang of Collierville. They have four grandchildren. Long time employee Lisa Smith said, “The last 16 years at Selmer Drug have been nothing but a blessing to me. You have been there for me and taught me so much. I am so thankful the Lord placed me in your pathway. You and Mrs. Tommye are my family and I love you both.” The Mitchell’s sold their inventory to Rite Aid drug Bobby Mitchell speaks with his cousin Bo chain, which has a large store at 409 Mulberry Avenue. 7 percent over 2013, and the ninth consecutive year tourism topped $1 billion, according to the latest statistics from the 2014 Economic Impact of Travel on Tennessee as reported by U.S. Travel Association. For the first time in history, travel to Tennessee topped 100 million, achieving 101.3 million person stays, a 5.1 percent increase over 2013. International travel increased 8.4 percent, reaching $576.5 million in economic impact. All 95 counties in Tennessee had more than $1 million in direct travel expenditures, 19 counties saw more than $100 million, and three counties, Davidson, Shelby and Sevier, had more than $1 billion in economic impact. Knox and Hamilton Counties round out the Top 5 with nearly $1 billion in econom-

ic impact. Tennessee is ranked in the Top 10 destinations in the U.S. for total travel. “This increase in tourism across the board is a result of the strategic work of Tourist Development, the Tourism Committee, and the entire tourism and hospitality industry,” Haslam said. “We want Tennessee to be a place people from all over the world want to visit. The data shows that’s happening, and more jobs and $1.5 billion in sales tax revenue is good news for every Tennessean.” Tennessee’s customer satisfaction landed at an impressive 8.5 out of 10. The satisfaction scores are greater than those of the average U.S. destination. “Tourists are drawn to Tennessee for our world-renown music, outstanding attractions, stunning scenic beauty,” Triplett

said. “But, at the end of the day, people keep coming to Tennessee for our authenticity and exceptional, Southern hospitality. That is the ‘made in Tennessee’ brand delivered to our visitors every day by our communities and partners.” The Tennessee Tourism Committee, appointed in 2011 by Gov. Bill Haslam, is made up of tourism leaders in both the public and private sectors. TTC is chaired by Colin Reed, Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc., and co-chaired by Jack Soden, Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. and Sande Weiss, president of Music Road Resort. Hamilton celebrates 50 years at Selmer Post Office By Christen Coulon

Michie proposing move of speed limit sign By Janet Rail

Managing Editor

In 1965, when Selmer Postmaster Tom Hamilton started his career at the post office, he never imagined that he would spend the next 50 years there. “I’ve been able to put in 50 years at the Postal Service, said Hamilton at a recent gathering in Nashville. “So I’m either crazy, or I love my work, and it happens to be the latter. Hamilton said that he was first asked to work at the post office as a part-time clerk when the Selmer Postmaster at that time, Leslie Moore, saw him delivering dry cleaning for his parents. “My father was in the dry cleaning business in Selmer and I was always out delivering dry cleaning to everyone in town. Plus I knew where everyone lived, he said. “Then one day my mother received a call from the local Postmaster who said, ‘Do you reckon Tom would be interested in going to work for the Postal Service? We are looking for someone who knows everybody.’ So that’s how I got started. Hamilton said that he split his time when he began working between working for his parents, the post office and attending FreedHardeman. After finishing at Freed-Hardeman Hamilton finished his business degree at Lambuth in 1969. “I would run home and take a shower, drive to Freed-Hardeman, I would come home on the weekend and work at the dry cleaners and post office, Hamilton said. Soon after graduation, Hamilton was promoted to full time window clerk. He was then promoted to supervisor a short time later in 1972. Hamilton was named Postmaster in Selmer in May 1979. “I have been Postmaster ever since, Hamiton said. “During that time, I have had many different assignments...I ran a post office in Oak Ridge for a few months, I ran one in Humbolt and one in Savannah and after that I returned to Selmer. Many people may picture the post office as a stressful place to work, but Hamilton said that he doesn’t have any stress at all. “I enjoy getting up, coming down here every morning and I have good people, Hamilton said. “Most of the time I will cook them breakfast on Friday morning as a way to thank them for doing such a good job. He said that becoming a postmaster has also made him become one of the best short order cooks in town. Hamilton said that during his time at the post office he has also seen some amazing and outright unusual things. He told the story of the day a man brought a mail box still attached to its post into the Selmer Post Office. When Hamilton asked why the man had brought it inside, the man asked Hamilton to remove a book which was stuck in the box. He also said that computers have

He said that during his time he watched as mail went from being sorted by hand to being sorted by a giant machine in Memphis which can sort about 30,000 pieces an hour. Hamilton said that he sees a future in the Post Office and said that he thinks that it will always need to be around. He said that the growth in the package business is becoming more important for the postal service and said that they have been doing much better since the recession and he said that the price of stamps is actually set to be reduced shortly. He said that they do not know exactly when, but the price of stamps is set to fall 3 cents to 46 cents later this year. Overall Hamilton said that he has enjoyed his time at the Post Office and has had a great career working with great people. He said that he still loves his job and has no plans to retire. “This is all that I have ever done, Hamilton said. “I’ve never had another job except for helping my daddy deliver dry cleaning. Hamilton is married to Beth (Wilson) Hamilton and has two sons and one granddaughter who Hamilton says is “the apple of my eye. On Wednesday at 10 a.m., Hamilton will be recognized in front of his peers and family for his 50 years of service by Manager of Post Office Operations Patty Frederick at the Selmer Post Office, 150 Houston Ave. Frederick will present Hamilton with a service pin and letter from Postmaster General Megan Brennan. “It’s not often we celebrate an employee who has served the Postal Service for 50 years, Frederick said about Hamilton in a recent press release. “That’s why we are taking a moment to honor a man who has given a large portion of his life to this organization. Tom is a great guy who’s well liked in his community. We are very fortunate to have someone of his caliber who has a high respect for the Postal Service and takes great pride in his work.

Mayor Anthony Smith proposed a change in the placement of the speed limit sign on a portion of Hwy 22 South. “There have been a number of accidents in the Ted Gray curve near James White’s house. I think if we move the 45 mile speed limit sign back 4/10’s of a mile to encourage drivers to slow down, said Smith. The motion passed on the first reading with Alderman Robert Dunn the only no vote. “I may be wrong, but I don’t see how that will help, said Dunn. The motion requires three readings and then a request to the state. The board discussed moving a recycle trailor from the Fire Department lot. During the storm Saturday, Aug 22 the recycling material scattered everywhere and there were some complaints. “Give it a little time. If it keeps causing a problem we will move it, said Alderman Brandon Nabors. “I don’t know another place to put it, said Alderman Jed Baker. The city will mail out information cards to gather current phone numbers, etc. in the next months water bill. The board discussed the upcoming fish fry for the fire department Oct. 17 and a Halloween Trick or Treat event in the city park Oct. 30.

State economic commissioner speaks in Adamsville last Friday By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

Tennessee Commissioner of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd spoke at the Marty in Adamsville last Friday. This was Boyd’s first trip to McNairy County. “I’m kind of excited about that,” Boyd said. Last year Boyd spent a weekend at Pickwick with Leadership Tennessee. “What a gem that so few people of the State of Tennessee know anything about. Hopefully, we can work on that,” Boyd said. Boyd said that customer service is one thing he learned in business that he wants to do in state government. “If we’re going to serve you, the best way to do so is listen to you, hear what needs you have and then address them. So, that’s going to be a focus for us,” Boyd said. Boyd shared three or four things that ECD does and some new things it will focus on. ECD is mostly known for business recruitment. Last year, ECD brought around 24,000 new jobs to the state, which is the record. Because of this, Tennessee was named State of the Year, by site selector magazine Business Facilities. “We’re nationally known as a state that does well in recruiting new businesses,” Boyd said. The most important factor in recruiting new businesses is having a site for them to move into, Boyd said. There are 36 premium Select Tennessee sites in the state and Adamsville is in the process of being approved for that category. “That will hopefully happen sometime early next year,” Boyd said. “While 37 is great, we need more,” Boyd said about these premium sites. Boyd said that the Property Identification Program helps communities identify sites. Select Tennessee also helps communities get a site shovel-ready. The department is looking at ways to get financial help to communities to build these sites, Boyd said. “This is something that I think we need to do, especially in our rural communities,” Boyd said.

A third thing ECD does is work with existing businesses. Three-fourths of the new jobs created came from existing businesses, Boyd said. Another thing ECD does is help entrepreneurs get started through Launch Tennessee. “The most important work we will do is supporting entrepreneurs,” Boyd said. A fourth thing the department does is community development. The ThreeStar program helps communities develop their infrastructure. “Businesses are going to locate where they want to live and if they don’t want to live there, they’re not going to locate there,” Boyd said. One new thing the department is doing is focusing on rural communities. Boyd said he got in trouble when he said in Nashville that if ECD were shut down, Nashville would do fine in attracting businesses. Though ECD will not be shut down and will continue to help Nashville, the department can do the most good in rural communities, Boyd said. ECD will also work with the Education, Tourism, Agriculture and other state departments that relate to economic development. The creation of a Rural Development Task Force was announced Aug. 18. The TVA, the Farm Bureau and the Rural Development District will be part of this task force, Boyd said. St. Sen. Dolores Gresham will be part of the task force. Gresham represents the 26th District, which includes McNairy County. One thing the task force will be working on is to raise the educational level in these communities. Two initiatives that will aid in this effort is the Drive to 55 and Tennessee Reconnect, which helps adults go back to a technical college and get a technical skill for free. Boyd said that the most important part of Tennessee Promise is the mentoring program. This helps students finish school. Another key factor in allowing rural entrepreneurs to do business all over the world is broadband access, Boyd said. Once the scope of the problem is identified, the state will look at best practices that have worked elsewhere. The best strategy for a community depends on its char-

acteristics, Boyd said. A industry-heavy strategy may not be right for all communities. Tourism or agribusiness may be the drivers of some rural economies. “So these are some of the things we are doing in rural development. It’s a huge effort and we are just getting started,” Boyd said. Boyd noted there is a dual problem of people graduating from college and not being able to find a job and businesses not being able to find the skilled workers they need. The solution is for improved communication between business and higher education. The six-year graduation rate for a four-year colleges and universities is only 56 percent in the state. It is 26 or 27 percent at community colleges, but it is 84 percent at Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology and the job placement rate is 92 percent, Boyd said. Boyd said his budget for business incentives is $50 million, but New York spends $100 million just on advertising.

Lipford also lived in the area near the bridge and after being drafted at the age of 19, was killed in action in WWII in early 1945 at the Battle of the Bulge.

PAGE 6A v INDEPENDENT APPEAL

We all know that something needs to be done, but there are those reluctant to pay for it. We can't have it both ways. On Oct. 1, we all will have an opportunity to go to the polls and vote for the $75 wheel tax or vote against it. The McNairy County Budget & Finance Committee recommended the wheel tax which was passed by the County Commission in July. In mid-August the Election Commission certified petitions and set a special election for Oct. 1. Previously, the county charged $20 for the wheel tax to build the justice complex which expired in 2013. The proposed increase would raise the amount from the current rate of $0 up to $75. There has been much discussion on how the money would be spent. We can't have lower taxes and expect to not see a reduction in services, increased debt, or both. Is it worth spending 21 cents a day to repair our roads, build and renovate our schools, complete capital improvements on our county buildings to help attract more jobs to this area? We think it is. No one sees a tax they like, and yes, perhaps it would have been better if we had increased taxes a little at a time and not all at once, but we have a choice to make in a few short weeks. What kind of McNairy County do you want to have? A progressive community that is ready to show the world that we are serious about jobs and a future for our children, or a county that will settle for anything less. The $75 increase would mean new money to cover proposed expenditures in four areas – The General Fund for county building improvements, volunteer fire departments, school building program and new road improvement for the highway department. It is a leap, but none of the money can be spent without the blessing of the county commissioners. This will put the county in a more sound financial condition and prepare us for new job development. We are currently recruiting a new director of economic development with a national search firm, the Next Move Group of St. Louis, Mo. Are we ready for the “Next Move?” Are we, as citizens prepared to make a commitment to our community and make the necessary investment to improve the quality of life for future generations. What will our legacy be? We all have a vote and a choice to make. If we lose the battle on the wheel tax, will we face increased property taxes or potentially a lower wheel tax and increased property taxes? As we said before, fixing our roads and schools is a priority most voters can agree on, we may not all agree on the way to get to that end, but we all want the same thing, a better McNairy. Voters, educate yourself on the issues and decide – 21 cents a day won't even buy you a cup of coffee but may pave the way to a better community.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Former Ramer administrators due credit for school’s Reward status Dear Editor: I am writing in regard to the article "Ramer Elementary in top 5%" from the August 19th, 2015 edition of the Independent Appeal. As a resident and small business owner in McNairy County, a resident of Ramer, and a parent of a child who attends Ramer Elementary School, I am very proud of the achievements that have been made. I understand that the new administration hopes and plans to continue the progress at Ramer. However, my humble opinion is that the achievements and accolades that the school is getting now

should be credited to the previous administration at Ramer. Former Principal Rusty Petty, and Retired vice Principal Gail Petty (no relation to Rusty Petty) worked diligently and were an integral part, along with the staff and educators during the 2014-2015 school year who are responsible for the achievements which led to the current award and recognition. I am disappointed that the prior year's administration, teachers and staff are not even mentioned in any of the media regarding Ramer Elementary School's award and recognition. I mean no disrespect to John Prince, Superintendent of McNairy

County Schools, or the new Principal Doctor Sondra Kiser; and admittedly, retired vice Principal Gail Petty is my mother. I just want to point out that it is the previous administration who are responsible for the current award. I have full faith and confidence that the new administration, staff and teachers of Ramer Elementary School will continue the legacy of excellence created by those who came before. Sincerely, Bryan Petty Selmer

Giddy up Go ...

The Original Truck Drivin’ Man By Bill Wagoner County Historian

I stopped at a Road House in Texas, A little place called Hamburger Dan’s I put a quarter in the juke box, And played the Truck Drivin’ Man! The long road to California was the one traveled for 60 years by Joe David Pettigrew. It was long and straight in places, and it was crooked, dark and forbidding at night and much too often. It was a place for the devil to hide and old Satan would get in the cab if he could. In the beginning years, the road was a part of old Route 66. It rolled by mobile homes, junkyards and shanty houses, places where hard luck people in loaded down jalopies had left a depression ridden economy to seek better lives in southern California.

They had set forth on a journey to the fruit and vegetable laden land of San Joaquin and San Bernardino. It was the road of the depression migrants. It wound through towns named Earp, Needles and Bakersfield. Joe David was an original truck drivin’ man. He had married a girl named Dorothy, she was 14, he was 16. Some shook their heads and said they’d never make it. That was about 65 years ago! They not only made it, they had love to spare. Till the end Joe was Joe. We knew he had a big heart, he was all heart. His friends all agreed he had an infectious personality. We knew he loved us and cared about the world around him. He did for his family and he did for us at one time or another. Imperfect as we all are, Joe loved us right down to the last breath. Forsaking his imperfect nature, he got it right in the final chapter of his life. “I wanna be saved he said, Bro.

Rickey will you pray with me!” Then the Lord came to lead Joe home, came in the twinkling of the eye. Joe would have been proud of that big funeral. He would have beamed, having them gathered around him with their love and their violins. It was somewhat the old song Farewell Party. It was a touching scene when they loaded his body up in an antique truck bed, the grandchildren were sitting beside his coffin. Then they cranked the big red Peterbilt, like the 20 trucks he wore out on the run to the West Coast. The big engine thundered like it had so many times on that run to California. It thundered a final tune and led the way to his final resting place while friends walked along behind in a gentle rain. The rain will fall, the sun will continue to travel from the east to the west. In the winter time the snows will blow and bring in the chilly wind. Joe will lay in repose until eternity. And, he’ll be in hearing distance of Highway 64, the road that travels out west “on his run!”

This 1985 Peterbilt, named Giddy Up ‘N Go, was a favorite of Joe David. This truck/trailer came from Cardox Ice Co. in Memphis. It had been driven by Bo Jack Killingsworth and later owned by Abb Chambers in 1974.

CAT SCRATCH FEVER MCHS SCORE MOST IN VICTORY SINCE 2002, CLAW SCOTTS HILL by Ethan Huggins Sports Writer

In a game that everyone was excited for, it was finally time for the fans and students of McNairy Central to see what the Boys in Blue had to offer this season. In a tough first match up where they were considered underdogs, these Bobcat boys showed what they were made of in a game that had a little bit of everything to offer. McNairy Central Scotts Hill

48 27

As the nerves of the Bobcat players and fans were anticipating the opening kickoff, there was a familiar face on the sidelines of Scotts Hill. Tommy Browder, the long time coach and former face of the Bobcats, was wearing yellow as he came to be the offensive coordinator for the Lions. Knowing this, the Bobcats D were preparing for a loaded offensive attack all night. Before everyone could be packed in and

surround the playing field, Bobcats kicker Parker Wheeler began the season with a booming kick that landed on the opposing four yard line. Scotts Hill picked up the ball and scampered the entire length of the field for a quick touchdown to put them up 7 to 0 with a good PAT. Not to be outdone, the Bobcats took their opening kickoff and got good field position to start the game. Under center, Junior quarterback, Dylan Crabb, was ready to lead his team. One of the players of the game for the Bobcats, Sophomore tailback Kylin Wynn, in his first career start, was looking to tie the game, and boy did he ever. Wynn nabbed a handoff on the Bobcat 44 and raced all the way down the field for a 56 yard TD run to tie the game at 7 all. The Bobcats gave the ball back to Scotts Hill after scoring, but not for long as the Bobcat D had a terrific series that stopped the Lions in their tracks. With the ball back, the Bobcats did not take long to get the lead as Wynn did it again and ran for another 53 yards for another MCHS touchdown to give them a 14 to 7 lead. With Scotts Hill down, the Lions were look-

ing to throw the ball to get back into the game, but that was a mistake as the Bobcat defense made it troublesome all day; the D line was giving the Scotts Hill QB no time to throw. On one of the few good throws that he did make, cornerback Bryant James had a spectacular interception on a fly ball hanger. Not to be outdone, MCHS’ QB Crabb was looking to get onto the board for himself as the Bobcat team did not throw the ball much in the game. When they did, it was a good thing as on that very next possession, Crabb connected with Will Wallace for a quick 30 TD pass that gave the Cats a two touchdown lead, going into the second quarter. Just a few minutes into the second quarter, the power went out of the stadium, which was not a big issue as there was still a little bit of daylight left. It was getting to the point that both teams could not see the ball and player’s safety was an issue for both teams. “We were worried about player safety and I’m glad we got them back on. One of our Bobcat parents actually got the lights back on, but we don’t know what happened. It could have

The Adamsville High School Cardinals faced off against the Chester County Eagles last Friday night at home, and what a way to start the season. Adamsville Chester County

It was evident that both teams came to win, resulting in an exciting game that proceeded into double overtime. The first quarter belonged to the Eagles, as Chester’s Cody Compton caught a pass and ran for the first touchdown of the year. The extra point was good and the Eagles were up over the Cardinals 7-0. The Cardinals took possession next, but were unable to answer the Eagles touchdown. In the second quarter, the Eagles came back strong with another touchdown and extra point kick, leaving the Cardinals with a staggering 14-point halftime deficit with the Eagles 14 and Cardinals 0. The Cards came back on the field after the half and took control. With six minutes and three seconds left in the fourth quarter, Dylan Whirley scored a needed touchdown for the Cardinals, that was followed by a solid PAT from Will Linam for the extra point. The Cardinals were back in the game, Eagles 14 Cardinals 7. Later in the fourth quarter, the Eagles fumbled the ball, and the Cards recovered with Whirley running for a 51 yard touchdown; the extra point kick was good and the score was tied 14-14. Fans on both sides of the field were on their feet, the bands beat their drums, cheerleaders rallied, and the team members shouted with encouragement. SMS Lady Lions Roar in Win vs. Lady Eagles by Ethan Huggins Sports Writer

With school back in session, the SMS Lady Lions and the RES Lady Eagles were ready to get the softball season started with a bang. Both teams match up well on paper and were even in many respects, even with the limited roster that Ramer boasts. Selmer Ramer

In the top half of the first frame, number ten for the Lady Lions had a great mix in her repotire, but her best pitch in the inning was her fastball. It was coming in hot and the Lady Eagles did not have a response as they went down in order. In the bottom of the inning, with the power in the top three hitters for Selmer, they led an offensive charge that they were able to bat the entire lineup. Leading the

The Lady Bobcats scored an impressive six goals against South Side. by Ethan Huggins Sports Writer

Despite the rain that graced the area through the previous evening, the Lady Bobcats Soccer team had its first home game of the season last Thursday, playing in a game that became an offensive clinic against Jackson South Side. McNairy Central 6 Jackson South Side 0

In the first forty minutes of play, it was a stalemate as both teams played great defense, but the Lady Cats had a stellar offense led by number 5 that would crash the South Side goalie on every possession. In the first ten minutes of action, it was still zero all until MCHS scored a quick goal and never looked back. Even after the first goal, their offense was still attacking their opponent’s end of the pitch, looking for more. With this constant barrage, Jackson was only able to get into Central’s end a handful of times. As halftime approached, it was still 1 to 0 for the Lady Bobcats. With a few minutes of rest and a good pep talk by Coach Lott, the Lady Cats were on the offensive game. In the final 40 minutes of play, the Lady Bobcats scored 5 goals as it seemed like on every possession, they were scoring with ease. In the end, McNairy Central won by a score of 6 to 0 over Jackson South Side.

charge was catcher and 8th grade leader, Tori York. After three outs, the Lady Lions lead 5 to nothing at the end of one. In the second, number 10 continued to control the pitching game and shut out Ramer again while at the plate, Selmer struck again with a few more runs. A big hit came from number 6 of Selmer as she had a 2 RBI hit to help her team. In the top of the third, Ramer was not

Meet the Bobcats 2015 was a fun event for all. After the team and visitors were treated to a pizza dinner, Coach Chad Hodge greeted the crowd and discussed the season at hand.

BOBCATS

been they had not check the lights yet and sometimes when you first turn on your lights it FROM PAGE 1B can lead to an overload,” said Hodge. “If they couldn’t have fixed it on Friday, they would have probably had finished on Saturday during the day at their place,” said Hodge. With it too dark to play, the game was put on pause and the two had a halftime show with a minute left in the second to play. As the Bobcat band was getting ready to perform, the lights turned on, and the announcer from Scotts Hill came back over the air. After both bands had finished playing, play was resumed when both teams came out of the fieldhouse to finish off the second. It seemed that the momentum had shifted in Scotts Hill’s favor as they scored on a 65 yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second half to shrink the Bobcat lead down to 14. The momentum was still in Scotts Hill’s favor for most of the quarter as they mounted a comeback and scored 20 unanswered points. It would seem that it was staged - similarly to what happened in the Super Bowl a few years back, but the Bobcat team was too confident and had too much to lose in this game to let Scotts Hill have the momentum. The game came to a stop and got incredibly serious after a punt from MCHS back to Scotts Hill as Dakota Dixon for the Bobcats, was hit in the side and was down for a long time. An ambulance was called and it took them about 20 minutes to get there. As of this writing, there was inflammation in his neck and there was no serious injury to Dixon. He will more than likely play in the game on Friday against Chester County. “We are happy that he will be fine.” Coach Hodge reflected. “After a MRI, there was no damage, or not even a concussion. There was a sharp pain in his neck, which is always a worry, but it was just inflammation and we will have him back and ready to play on Friday,” said Hodge. With their fallen teammate on their minds, this Bobcats team reached deep down to mount a comeback. As Scotts Hill got the touchdown that would tie the game, the kicker missed the PAT and the momentum swung back like a Giancarlo Stanton home run cut. On the very next possession, Junior tailback Mykeal Hudson had a big score as he ran 19 yards for a touchdown which was helped by his offensive line. Heading into the fourth and final quarter, the Bobcats were still heavy on the offense and shutting down anything Scotts Hill had on defensive. Mr. Wynn did it once again as he got the ball and rushed for another 15 yards for a touchdown to give the Cats a 14 point lead.

Meet the Bobcats 2015

With the game clock ticking away, the Scotts Hill offense was throwing the ball on every down to try and mount a comeback, but the hawks of the Bobcat secondary were there on every throw. It was none other than Kylin Wynn that did it yet again as he had a big interception and ran it back 68 yards for a big pick-six that put the nail in the coffin for the Lions and secured the Bobcat victory. The Boys in Blue were excited about the win as much as the fans and certainly as much as Coach Chad Hodge. “After this win, these boys are a little bit more focused and a lot more confident in themselves. Now they can go into a game thinking ‘You know what, we can win, and do the things we have been taught, ‘” said Hodge. The big player of the game was arguably Kylin Wynn, the sophomore who looks to keep his starting job at running back for a long time for the Bobcats with a big game like that. “With his talent, if you keep him healthy, he will look to break some records, “ said Hodge. “He’s not very talkative, and what we like about him is his unselfishness. The first thing he would tell you is his line blocked well for him because he’s not about ‘me, me, me.’ He’s never been that way. He just wants to win and just wants to play football. He was sick during the game and I didn’t know about it. His mom had to tell me, but he just wanted to play and help our team win,” said Hodge. Even with the loss of two big players - TaTa Newsome and Jeremy Harris - their presence was still felt as they were cheering their team on with Harris on the phone at home and TaTa on the sidelines. “It’s difficult that we lost them, but our other kids have to step up and they did in this game. TaTa comes to practice everyday cheering, and motivating our guys every day. That says a lot about both players right there,” said Hodge. The next game for McNairy Central is against facing district rival Chester County there at Chester. Even after such a momentous victory at Scotts Hill, this game will be a treacherous one for the Bobcats - though with this victory they certainly proved that no test is too great for their iron will. In the bottom half, the game started to slow down for the Lady Lions as the pitching for Ramer started to heat up. In that inning, Selmer threaten to increase its lead more, but a great unassisted double play by first baseman Darby Dickey put an end to that. With some rain on the way, both teams hurried to finish the game and the next two innings were finished quickly, but not without Ramer trying to get back into the game.
