National Youth Day relaunches Youth Center activities of SCS
Sonada: The Salesian College Sonada’s Youth Department under the animation of Fr. Pawanjit organized not only the National Youth Day, but also relaunched the Youth Centre activities with an inaugural function. Due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic the celebration was restricted only to three youth centres, namely Gorabari, St. Teresa Parish Sonada, and Chattakpur. There were about 60 young people who participated in this event.

Mr. Terence Mukhia the Assistant Professor at Salesian College, Sonada was the chief guest of the day. Rev. Fr. James Chacko the Rector of Salesian Studentate Sonada, graced the occasion with his esteemed presence and words of welcome. Some of the important persons of Gorabari such as Mr. B.K Rai, Mr. Naveen Rai, Mr. Madan Gurung, Mr. Dawa Lama & Ms. Sumina Chettri and others were also invited for this event as guests of honors.
Rev. Fr. James Chacko the Rector then welcomed the august gathering with his words of welcome and shared a short message with those present. He stressed on the Olympic Motto Citius, Altius, Fortius. To highlight the importance of youth Centre activities and with the view to relaunch these activities, the brothers of SCS, prepared a video presentation, bringing into light the various aspects of Salesian College Sonada, Youth Centres. After the Short presentation the Gorabari youth Centre performed a Nepali Cultural dance.
The Chief Guest of the day Mr. Terence Mukhia, addressed the gathering especially the Brothers and the young people. He highlighted the importance of having a holistic formation for the young people. He stressed on the Salesian motto of Da Mihi animas caetera tolle. He said to the brothers that they should identify the problems of the young people in the places they work and address those issues rather than having a generic plan. He also told them to look after the spiritual needs of the young people. He also encouraged the young people present there, to be open to new learning. After this short message the brothers of SCS danced to the tune of Da Mihi animas.
Fr. Pawanjit expressed his gratitude to all those present, with his vote of thanks and the presentation of memento to Rev. Fr. James Chacko, the Chief Guest, the guests of honor and those who performed prayer dance and Nepali cultural dance. After this short thanksgiving ceremony, the brothers performed a choir piece.
After the formal session of the inauguration the brothers of SCS organized various activities for the young people, such as games, and action songs.

Government of West Bengal honours Don Bosco Mirik for Kanyashree Prakalpa scheme
Darjeeling: Don Bosco High School, Mirik became the first private school in the Darjeeling district to bag 2nd Prize for the successful implementation and running of Kanyashree Prakalpa scheme instituted by Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee. The Additional District Magistrate of Darjeeling, Smt. Banhishikha Dey, IAS, handed the Kanyashree award to Miss Eva Dewan, the Nodal teacher for the school on 14 August at the District Magistrate office in Darjeeling.

Don Bosco Mirik has been running this scheme since 2017. Around 120 girls from class 8 to 12 are registered under this Kanyashree scheme. The Girls apart from receiving scholarships, they participate in various Kanyashree events that are organized either in the block or in the district. “Don Bosco girls have participated in various events such as Kanyashree Day, cultural programs, quiz, cleanliness drive and other social activities organized exclusively for Kanyahsree girls,” says Miss Eva Dewan.
This year a total of 23 new girls have been registered for this scheme. Kanyashree Prakalpa provides an annual scholarship of Rs. 700/- for age group of 13 to 18 years and One Time Grant of Rs. 25000/- to a girl who turns 18 and is engaged in an academic or occupational pursuit and is unmarried. 33 girls are eligible for this One Time Grant this year.
Speaking about how this scheme has impacted the lives of the girls in the school, Lawrence Lepcha, another teacher involved in this scheme says, “this had made the girls smart and active and many of them pursue their higher education.”
Kanyashree Prakalpa is an initiative of Government of West Bengal founded by Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee on 8th March 2013 and publicized on 14th August 2013, to provide financial assistance to the girls, aged of 13-18 of economically backward classes, so that they can pursue their higher education and to stop untimely marriage of girls. It has been given international recognition by the United Nations Department of International Development and the UNICEF.
Don Bosco High School, Mirik, is an english medium co-educational school under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, established in the year 2005. The school caters to the children of tea garden in the Mirik valley of the Darjeeling district.

Salesian College Hosts NCC Training Camp
Siliguri Rotaract and Lions Club Honour Salesian College Don Bosco Bandel boy tops AIIMS entry test
Siliguri, Sep. 25. A combined 10-day Annual National Cadet Corps (NCC) training camp for 400 NCC cadets from 10 colleges in and around Siliguri was held under the aegis of the 16th Bengal Battalion at Salesian College Siliguri from September 16-25, 2021.
The camp activities included drills, weapon training, map reading and various team-building exercises with social activities. Twenty-eight cadets from Salesian College participated in the camp along with Salesian College NCC Coordinator Lt Risha Chettri.
The cadets followed their daily schedule of morning meditation, morning and evening drills, learning from the armed forces, social subjects and playing games. From September 21, the cadets in batches went to the firing range for weapon firing practice. The campers had a gala cultural evening on September 24, with NCC Commander Balraj Gurung and Salesian College Vice Principals Father CM Paul (Science) and Father PT Saju (Arts) as guests of honour. At the finish of the camp, the Salesian College NCC Company bagged the champions trophy.

Kolkata, Sep. 9. Marking Teachers’ Day on Sunday September 5, a group of four Chartered Accountant Siliguri Rotaract members visited Salesian College Principal Father George Thadathil and offered him a bouquet of flowers and a certificate of appreciation.
The inscription on the certificate from Rotaract Club of Siliguri reads: This certificate is proudly presented to Salesian College in appreciation of their outstanding commitment and valued contribution towards the nation. Later in the afternoon, Lions Club of Siliguri CAre organized a trio camp of Blood Donation, Vaccination Drive, Eye Donation Pledge at Siddhi Vinayak Banquet Hall on S.F. Road with Principal

While 25 teachers were felicitated for their services, the camp facilitated 130 Covid-19 Vaccinations, 25 Eye donation pledges and 7 Blood Donations
Hooghly: Amartya Sengupta, a Don Bosco Bandel past pupil, topped the Institute of National Importance Common Entrance Test (INI-CET) this year. This all India competitive examination allows an MBBS doctor to step into a few elite medical institutes like AIIMS New Delhi to study post-graduation.
He completed his schooling from Don Bosco School Bandel and secured a MBBS seat at MCHK (Medical College Hospital Kolkata) after cracking the WBJEE.
He is now preparing to take up general surgery for his post-graduation at AIIMS in New Delhi.


SCS hosts 12th Verzotto Memorial Lecture on Business Journalism

Sonada: Salesian College hosted its annual Verzotto Memorial Lecture online on Business Journalism, on 22 September, here at Kallingal Auditorium.
Mr. Joseph Rai, a Business Journalist with 10 years of experience as Special Correspondent for VCCircle, Hindustan Times, delivered his lecture on ‘Business Journalism: Start-up Coverage in India’.
In the on-line lecture attended by both students and professors of Salesian College Sonada and Siliguri campuses, Joseph Rai gave a very holistic approach to the subject matter and brought to the forefront many new concepts of business journalism. He concluded his lecture quoting George Orwell, “Journalism is printing what someone else does not want printed; everytthing else is public relations. “
On the same occasion, Prof. Dipen Roy, Department of commerce, presented his new book for release, ‘Managerial Microeconomics for Commerce Management CMA & Other Business Studies’ to the august gathering.
Fr. Dr. James Chacko, Rector of Salesian Studentate and Fr. Prof. George Thadathil, Principal of Salesian College, released the book after a short introduction about the author and the book.
Verzotto memorial lecture is an annual event in honour of Fr. Joseph Verzotto, a Salesian priest and a great philosopher. He taught ethics, metaphysics, psychology, epistemology and Indian philosophy at Salesian college apart from being the college librarian, counsellor, postman, fund raiser, and a philanthropist. He was also a biographer, literary essayist, film critique, a translator and a religious instructor. He died in Kolkata in 2009 at the age of 82.
