Beyond the Pew *“Beyond the Pew” is a story series sharing a peek into the life of the parishioners at Church of the Incarnation. From Williamsburg to Slovenia, he’s traveled the globe to study, teach, and ensure the preservation of some of the most impressive and important architectural structures in the world. He was the initial architect of the Texas State Capitol project and Executive Director of the State Preservation Board, where he was responsible for planning the initial phases for the restoration of the National Historic Landmark Building, and its grounds, including the Old General Land Office Building. As part of a team of experts put together by the United States National Park Service in an agreement with the Indian Government, he produced a strategic management and conservation plan for the monuments in the Taj Mahal National Park in Agra, India, including the garden, auxiliary structures, and the nearby Red Fort. He has created an architectural conservation laboratory – the first of its kind in the country. He has evaluated Lunenburg, Nova Scotia for UNESCO/ ICOMOS in order to determine its eligibility for the World Heritage List. He has also had a long and notable association with the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, an intergovernmental organization based in Rome. And in 2013, he received the highest honor given in his field, the James Marston Fitch Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership in preservation education. He is Roy Eugene Graham, the architect, who sits next to you on the pew and whose favorite job of all has been serving as distinguished professor of architecture at the University of Florida.

After a lifetime of achievements, awards, and authorships, Roy moved back to Dallas to be close to family. He has two daughters and a grandson who live in surrounding suburbs. With a self-admitted obsession with mid-century modern architecture, Roy chose 3525 Turtle Creek to call home. The building is one of the nation's few Modernist high-rise apartment buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Roy frequents the healing service each Wednesday at Incarnation. And while he is still very close to the rector and congregation at Holy Trinity in Gainesville, Florida, where he lived for many years, Roy has found support and community here. YOUR PRAYER LIFE

HOW IT AFFECTS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD By The Reverend S. Thomas Kincaid, III Vice Rector

Following Jesus for a lifetime includes the big moments (baptism, confirmation, first communion, marriage, prayer over a first child, death of a loved one, etc.) and the small moments (the daily little acts of sacrifice offered to the Lord). While all of us tend to put a lot of focus on the big ones, it’s actually the smaller moments with God that comprise most of our walk with him. And nothing is more important to faithfulness in those moments than having a deep relationship with God in prayer. Anicia Faltonia Proba, who died in the year 432, was a Christian Roman noblewoman. By virtue of her worldly good fortune and her faithfulness, she had the distinction of knowing two giants of the Church in her day: Saint Augustine, the tremendously significant theologian, as well as Saint John Chrysostom, the greatest preacher of the Church’s early centuries. We have two letters of Augustine to Proba, and the first (Letter 130) is the only single, substantial treatment on the subject of prayer that Augustine ever wrote. The letter is a master’s class on prayer, and well worth the moderate effort the nearly 9,000 words require. But for our purposes, I want to focus on just one part of what he said:

Remember, in order to your “continuing in prayers and supplications night and day,” that however great the temporal prosperity may be which flows around you, you are desolate.

This Lent we’ll be focusing on how to develop a daily life of prayer using the Morning & Evening Prayer services found in The Book of Common Prayer. These services (often called “Offices”) have been at the core of Anglican spirituality from its earliest days, and they can serve as the foundation for a faithful life of prayer. They include not only petitions and thanksgivings to the Lord, but these old patterns teach us how to pray the Bible. Doing so will be a great opportunity to build upon our common learning from the recent Old Testament series we did together. The reason Augustine’s instruction to Proba is important to us—and the reason it connects to learning Morning & Evening Prayer—is because it’s not hard to remember to pray when our desolation is obvious. It’s not hard to remember to pray when our need for God is at its zenith. But that’s not primarily what Morning & Evening Prayer are about. Remember, Proba was in a good season of life and lived a comfortable life (basically where most of our lives are most of the time). While the Offices can be helpful in moments of joy and crisis, they are more suited toward establishing a rhythm for the spiritual life. This rhythm then empowers our recognition of God’s generosity toward us. That recognition, in turn, deepens our relationship with him. My prayer for you this Lent is that you and your family (there will, of course, be age appropriate versions for the younger folks in our parish) will develop the routine pattern of encountering Jesus Christ in prayer. Be on the look out for materials to make this possible for you and your family!

In other words, in order to keep praying night and day, we must remember that we are desolate—that is to say, our lives are empty without the Lord—no matter how well our lives are going. It was a powerful message to a noblewoman of significant means. ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

BRINGING FAITH HOME

you can do it. we can help. By The Reverend Joe Hermerding Assistant Rector, Children & Family

It felt like stealing. I mean, technically it wasn't. But it felt like it. Sure, it was my own child. But it was my first child, and I was walking out of the hospital into the freezing cold Wisconsin winter thinking, "Um, I'm not sure I'm responsible enough for this." If the nurse realized I don't always use my blinkers when I'm turning, and I lose my sunglasses like it’s my religion, and I enjoy ignoring the Chicago Manual of Style just to annoy my wife—would she let me take this human being home? Of course, it didn't matter how responsible I felt. It was my child. The responsibility was mine whether I wanted it or not. And although several years have passed since the birth of my first child, that feeling has come back on many occasions. Now the child is older, has three siblings, and is growing up in a world very different from the one in which I grew up. How can I raise this child to love Jesus Christ, to have and believe in the faith that is so central to who I am? I'm not sure I'm responsible enough for this. On one level or another, I think all parents feel the weight of this responsibility. Many have explicitly expressed it to me. As a church, we have decided to do something about it. Something radical. We're calling it "Bringing Faith Home". Bringing Faith Home is a series of resources that we're developing to equip parents with practical tools for the spiritual formation of their children. As important as the church buildings are for spiritual growth, the home is the primary context for faith formation. And parents, whether

feeling unprepared like I did or not, are responsible for seeing that the children we raise grow, as we say at their baptism, "into the full stature of Christ." Bringing Faith Home will include a physical resource center near the bookstore and the Welcome Center and will display the resources that we are developing for families. The resources will include prayers, advice from seasoned parents, and further recommendations to explore more deeply the many topics that are pertinent to parents— all the way from Considering Marriage to Grandparenting. Being intentional about the faith formation of your children can have a radical impact on their spiritual lives. It is not an impossible task. Bringing Faith Home will unite parents in their common vocation of discipling their children. It will make discussions surrounding these topics central to the consciousness of our families. The resources will be free, pamphlet-sized, and easily digestible, fitting the hectic lifestyles that families tend to have. Bringing Faith Home will enable us as a church to partner with parents for the spiritual formation of our children more strategically and intentionally than ever before.

Coming January 2017! In the summer of 2015, The Incarnation Foundation awarded Children & Family Ministry with a grant to establish the Bringing Faith Home curriculum. It is one of many initiatives funded by the Foundation to ensure a strong future for the families of our parish.

Q & A WITH TRENT ROBERTSON Trent Robertson is a fellow parishioner who sits next to you on Sundays. He’s an entrepreneur who uses his creative talent not only to make a living but also to help fulfill the mission of this church. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CHRISTIAN WALK. I was an Episcopal acolyte as soon as I could take my first steps. I've always felt it was a very personal journey. One that I prefer to demonstrate by my actions as opposed to only my words. I think many people here feel the same way. SHARE WITH US WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS PLACE. This church is the boundary of shared tradition and personal faith. It's a warm and open place that allows everyone to be themselves. My parents, Doug and Verna Robertson, have always loved the Episcopal church and have been attending Incarnation for more than 30 years. Much of my extended family is here, too. In addition to my parents, there's my brother Drew Robertson, his wife Raeann, and their kids Phillip, Sophie, and Taylor Rae. I have a sister, Chase, and her family, Antoine, Celeste, and Felix, who live in Alameda, CA, and another sister, Keon in Austin. This place has become a family within my family. YOU HAVE CLEARLY BEEN GIFTED WITH CREATIVE COMMUNICATION AS A SPIRITUAL GIFT. HOW HAS SHARING YOUR TALENT FOR THE WORK OF GOD CHANGED YOU AND HOW YOU VIEW THE WORK YOU DO EVERY DAY? Thank you for saying that. The great thing about helping the church is that I feel I am part of something bigger—the Episcopal community and this community of believers. It’s a privilege to help Incarnation in any way that I can. I feel my creative side is a gift I recognized from God from a very early age, and it’s nice to put it into His service. I expect the same quality of work and creativity to be put into the projects I produce for the church that I would for any other client. And I pray that the videos make the impact they are intended to make and done to the glory of His name. *Trent collaborated with the Communications and Development Departments at Incarnation to produce several videos over the last few years. He helped us explain The City to our members; introduce our church to visitors; recruit Uptown Fellows; and communicate the practical importance of stewardship as we live into our calling as a church.

YOU OWN RUBY RED FROG DESIGN & MEDIA GROUP. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER AND HOW YOU ENDED UP STARTING YOUR OWN DIGITAL MEDIA AGENCY. After earning several degrees, working as an actor in LA for 12 years, and having a 15-year career in software and web development, I knew it was time to establish my own brand. I started my little company two years ago. We specialize in websites, video, and photography. We offer apps for mobile, too. With the support of many talented people, I have helped my clients move closer to their goals through better communication. It's a passion. It's a fascination. And I love doing it. WHAT ROLE DOES DIGITAL MEDIA PLAY IN THE FUTURE OF THE CHURCH AND ITS MISSION FROM GOD? To me, it's all about communication. And usually, the obvious message isn't the most important one. It's often about subtext and layered meaning. Not to mention with many generations and places-of-origin under the same roof, the ways we understand and exchange ideas becomes more nuanced and complicated. It's just part of being human. My hope is that all these new digital media channels help cut through all of this, bringing us closer together, while allowing us to fulfill our mission. Of course, digital media is a tool that needs to be used correctly, with mutual respect and sincerity. That's where oldfashioned storytelling and creative approaches come into play. I guess what I mean is, I believe it's best to use technology to help illuminate our lives in a way that is hopefully in service to Christ. We are thankful to Trent for using his spiritual gift of Creative Communication to serve this church. Spiritual gifts are special abilities distributed by the Holy Spirit to every believer. Scripture tells us that we are called to undertake the responsibility of the gifts that are bestowed on us to fulfill the mission of the Church. Each of us is called to know what all the gifts are and how God intends them to function in the body of Christ. The purpose of identifying your spiritual gifts is so you will be able to learn specifically how you can contribute as you serve on various ministry teams. God is glorified and His people are edified in a church that embraces and develops gift-based ministries for its people. If you took the spiritual gift assessment already this year and want to discuss how to best use your gifts or if you would like to take the assessment, please email kjohnson@incarnation.org.

BUY LOCALLY. SERVE GLOBALLY. By Martha Lang Executive Director of Mission & Outreach

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” — Mark 16:15 In the next year, more than 1.5 million Americans will participate in a short-term mission trip and spend close to $2 billion collectively.

We now have two multiple trips to Central America where we concentrate our efforts for the greatest long-term impact. The need is significant in both Belize and Honduras, and it costs thousands of dollars to coordinate the trips and secure the supplies needed to fulfill our work each year. While most missioners are able to secure funding to participate in these trips, there are some who cannot. These folks are in need of your support.

WHY? Perhaps they want to learn about other cultures. Perhaps they want a unique way to volunteer their time. Perhaps it’s simply something they’ve always wanted to do. No matter the reason, stepping into another part of God’s world will stretch your faith.

We are blessed with a community life group called the “Outreach Artisans.” This is a group of gifted and generous members who work tirelessly creating original pieces of art, ranging from hand-painted notecards to embroidered linens. All proceeds from the sale of these items contribute to a scholarship fund for missioners who desire to participate in a mission trip, but can’t afford the whole cost.

It was a direct command from Jesus for the early church to carry the good news to other places, and while an individual can only do so much for spreading the Gospel in the world, a church mission program creates an impactful opportunity to live out God’s desire for us as believers.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? • Buy some of these one-of-a-kind items and enable missioners to spread the gospel far and wide. You can view these items in several locations:

We know that God calls people out into the unknown, often through short journeys and experiences. From Paul to Jonah, and Numbers 13 to Joshua 2, God had something for them to see, to learn, or to do. The God who sent them, sends us.

• Stairwell Alcove near Room 19 in Garrett Hall • Incarnation’s Mission & Outreach offices on Elizabeth St. • Periodic Pop-Up Shops: Next one December 2 from 8:30 – 11:30 am in the Great Hall

Mission trips offer a unique service experience. You are part of a team, a team of Christians dedicated to transforming towns, villages, individuals, and families by sharing Christ’s love through your hearts and hands.

• Become a part of this community life group. All artists are welcome to join in the creation of these handmade pieces each Tuesday from 2 – 5 pm at the Mission & Outreach office at the north end of the Incarnation campus on Elizabeth St.

One of the most important aspects of a mission trip is the fellowship and connection it creates among the members of Incarnation. Spending time together in prayer and service leads to rich friendships and a deeper connection with God and your church home.

For more information about foreign mission work, please email outreach@incarnation.org. We are always looking for missioners and prayer partners.

By David LeBlanc Incarnation Foundation Board Member

Edith Howson was old school. She had a vision of what God expected her to do and a duty to this church. Edith was a member of Incarnation for nearly six decades, remaining throughout the tenure of a number of rectors. “Serving alongside Edith on the Altar Guild, you could see how close she felt to God as she prepared for the Eucharist,” says Katherine Harris. “You just knew the church was important to her.” Quietly imitating Christ with every action of her life, she cared for her first husband and her youngest son, who were both overtaken by cancer and then her second husband who suffered from Alzheimer disease until his passing. Even in her later years, Edith would visit her homebound friends and take flowers to the cemetery on important anniversaries of those who had already made their sojourn to heaven. “It was clear she had a peace that only comes from the Holy Spirit,” says Frank, her oldest son. Twila Richardson recalls, even in her last days, Edith was joyful because she knew she was going to a better place. Her life as a faithful Christian had prepared her for that moment. It was no surprise to her family that Edith left a bequest to the church upon her death—her work was not finished. One might think conviction this strong is rare, but that is not so. Like many other young families, Leila and Holland Gary have found in Incarnation a source of spiritual growth, guidance, and fellowship. They understand God calls us to do more than just worship. “We want to be a part of good things, to make sure that what is being built within these walls will be here for generations to come. That is our calling,” says Leila. Like Edith, Holland and Leila attend, serve, and give to the church because that is what God asks of them. They give their kids a strong spiritual foundation, a good education, and a loving home. “We want to demonstrate to our children the importance of the stewardship of the resources God has entrusted to us. We carefully consider this each year in terms of our financial gifts and our time.” They believe feeding their church home also feeds their marriage and their family. “I figured we would leave the church in our estate plans,” says Holland. “When we thought more tangibly about it, it seemed like an expensive administrative headache to go back to our attorney and make a bequest. But then we learned there’s more than one way to do it. We simply updated our IRA online by naming Incarnation as a partial beneficiary,” says Holland.

“We were relieved once we’d made the decision to do it sooner rather than later—planning an estate gift is easy. It’s not like you can do anything with earthly treasure after you are gone. This is also our final moment to communicate to our children that we believe that giving thanks for the gifts of our life is what is important to us, and that we hope they’ll agree for the sake of their own kids and grandkids.” The Incarnation Foundation receives, then manages assets from planned gifts such as bequests through wills or living trusts, or beneficiary designations to Church of the Incarnation from insurance policies, IRAs and other retirement plans like 401(k)s. Like you, the Foundation is committed to the transformational work of Church of the Incarnation. Both Holland Gary and Chase Skorburg witness this firsthand as board members of the Foundation. “It’s been a privilege to see how the Foundation’s grants have blessed those who have received them and helped to further God’s Kingdom. We also feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to see how thoughtfully bequests and other estate gifts are handled, and how the policies of the Foundation provide a strong roadmap for the future,” says Chase. “With the Foundation’s care and Incarnation’s history of effective leadership, we were glad to include Incarnation in our will, when we set it up after our daughter was born.” “Because we designated a percentage of our estate to the church in our wills, we don’t know what the size of our gift will be. However regardless of size, we believe the Foundation will be capable of maximizing our gift and will responsibly administer the funds to ensure Incarnation’s strong future. It is a joy to participate in the life of the church this way,” says Wendy Skorburg. What do Edith, Holland, Leila, Chase, Wendy and The Incarnation Foundation have in common? They are good and faithful servants committed to Incarnation now and in the future. Whether you’ve been here for decades or are just settling into your new church home, you belong to God; it’s that simple. What is your prayer for the future of Incarnation? What kind of legacy will you leave? Keep these questions on your heart as the Holy Spirit moves energetically through you and this place. If you’d like to learn more about The Incarnation Foundation’s commitment to Church of the Incarnation or planned giving options to discuss with your family, visit our website: incarnationfoundation.org. COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR

THE COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR CROWD

This is the 7th year that Church of the Incarnation has hosted the Community Health Fair. We partnered with the Incarnation Foundation, Caring for Children Foundation, Dallas County Medical Society Alliance, North Dallas Shared Ministries, Texas A&M Dental School, Spokes for Folks and the Dallas Police Central Patrol Division. Each year we seek to help the families in our community and the greater Dallas area with free vaccines, free sports physicals and free dental care. This year we were able to provide over 500 people with 297 immunizations, over 100 sports physicals and 162 dental screenings. Young Chevrolet donated reusable grocery bags to the families. Each family also received a soccer ball as they left to help them stay physically active. We thank the many volunteers who worked so hard to make this event a success, including the Incarnation and DCMSA volunteers, the physicians, nurses, dentists and hygienists who donated their time on Saturday to work at "the last free health fair before school started in August!

FIRE DEPARTMENT

In addition, the day would not be complete without our fabulous emcee CJ Johnson, Zumba, Diabetes testing, health booths, Volunteer Now, Ntarupt, the low rider car and McGruff. The efforts of 150 volunteers from partners all over the city came together for one amazing two-hour health fair! A special thank you to the church custodial staff and Communications Department for behind the scenes support, as well as Sandy Secor and Michelle Anderson for their tireless leadership. It is our honor to be of service to the community.

vestry nominations

DUE BY DECEMBER 16

Each year a Nominating Committee prepares a slate of candidates for the parish’s consideration at the Annual Meeting, to be held in February. At the Annual Meeting, we elect five parishioners to the Vestry for a term of three years. The Nominating Committee consists of the five retiring members of the current Vestry, along with up to 10 additional “members at large,” i.e. lay people selected from the congregation who meet the same standards as those whom they propose to nominate for election. The goal is to convene a Committee that fully represents the Parish and its activities and interests. The Chairman of the Committee is the Senior Warden, and the Rector is an Ex-Officio member. The Bylaws of the Parish, which conform with the Canons of the Diocese of Dallas, prescribe the conditions that must be met to be eligible for election to the Vestry: “Any confirmed communicant in good standing who is at least 18 years of age and who has been a financial contributor of record for one year before the election takes place is eligible to serve as a Vestry member.” One condition requires further explanation: A communicant, i.e. one who is confirmed and is formally on the rolls of Church of the Incarnation, must have established a record of giving that includes a pledge for the current calendar year. The minimum requirements aside, members of the Vestry and candidates for this position of leadership must have demonstrated a strong commitment to be in Church every Sunday, Holy Days of Obligation, and other days of special devotion. The first and most solemn duty of a member of the Vestry is to lead by deed and example. Note: Spouses of Incarnation staff or clergy members are not permitted for nomination. All members in good standing of the Parish are encouraged to become involved in the nominating process. You may do this by submitting your recommendation to the Rector’s office.

PLEASE USE THE VESTRY NOMINATION FORM THAT CAN BE FOUND LOCATED AROUND THE CHURCH, OR FILL OUT A FORM ONLINE AT INCARNATION.ORG.

the gifts of people FOR THE WORK OF GOD

During the tail-end of our Stewardship season, those of you who attended Uptown Contemporary services would have seen a short animated feature about giving at Incarnation. While making a case for all of us to consider relinquishing a portion of our worldly goods for the good of the kingdom (and ourselves), the film also provided a little information about the nature of our gifts to the church. For example, the video explained that gifts in the offering plate make up only 5% of our operating revenue and pledges comprise 75% of those revenues. Another 20% comes in the way of generous contributions from visitors and members alike that may be a one-time or repetitive gift, a random or intentional donation. These gifts may be in lieu of a pledge, or in addition to a pledge. Over the past ten months, almost 500 individuals and/or households made such gifts, amounting to over $550,000!

SOURCES OF FUNDS

$4,040,000 Your Stewardship Campaign Commitments $1,049,000 Other Income $240,000 Borrow from reserves $5,329,000 Total income (projected) for 2016

BUDGETED USE OF FUNDS

This chart indicate how the church’s funds are divided among its ministry areas. The expenses include salaries and benefits for staff, churchwide technology and communication needs, capital resources utilized by our ministries, facility maintenance, and operating expenses.

On the pledge side of things, we have had close to 600 households commit to making a pledge over the past several years. These households also have increased the amount of their commitment each year on average. We know that there are others who for whatever reason have not made any pledges or gifts, but coupled with the givers cited above, Incarnation is blessed to have contributions from over 1,050 separate individuals and/or families! We probably emphasize our pledges more stridently than the givers, but only because those who choose to make a pledge enable us to forecast more easily and accurately than the latter. In the future, we will try to illuminate other aspects of the church’s financial system, but please know that you can call the Business Office at any time if you want more information.
