A Message from the Editor It is amazing times in which we live, here at Church of the Incarnation! Evidence of life, growing in our parish, abounds. Just look at May 12 — First Communion, Mom’s & Mimosas, the Lift High the Cross capital campaign announcement, and the first occasion of newlyminted priests, Fr. Matthew Larsen and Fr. Paul Wheatley celebrating Holy Communion — there is a LOT of life happening at Incarnation! We are a growing parish that is seeking to minister to each other, our community, nation, and the world. I believe God is blessing us with opportunities to do just that! While it is easy to focus on all the growth, events and happenings as we become a larger parish, it important we also grow smaller. To continue to pursue a deepening and maturing of relationships both with our parish family members, and also with our Lord. It is for that reason I want to draw your attention to the center portion of this edition — the extra-brightly festooned pages. This summer’s theme is “Summer Art Wave”! These center pages are loaded with opportunities to meet new people and make new friends, share common experiences, and perhaps find more of the beauty of our faith, in the arts — film, books, music and more. Page 20 features the lineup of special guest speakers for our “Art Wave” lecture series in Memorial Chapel at 10:20am each Sunday; be sure to take a look! To learn more about everything happening here this summer, be sure to attend the Summer Preview event happening next Sunday, May 19 — with festivities similar to Rally Day, this will be an event not to miss! Finally, further evidence of our growth is demonstrated in increased need for more volunteers, and more diverse opportunities in which to use one’s gifts in the service of our Lord. One such new opportunity is shown below, the Incarnation Media Guild. If media interested, and you have the skills to match, we need you! This will be a grand summer at Incarnation — see you soon!

A new opportunity to serve is just around the corner...

the

Incarnation Media Guild.

If you would like to be a part of this unique group of media artisan volunteers please email shaal@incarnation.org. This efforts of the group will be seen online, in the church hallways, and in various church publications such as The Angelus. photography. videography. production. editing. have another media skill? let us know. Grace

Gateway of Ministering to Dallas Refugees

A

bout fifty people were moving toward the baptismal font as Bishop James Stanton baptized each of them during the Sunday service at Trinity Episcopal Church in Dallas a few weeks ago. This was not a typical baptismal service for him, nor Trinity. That is because the baptizands were all Bhutanese refugees! Smiles and tears of joy could be seen throughout the church as, one by one, these precious Christians were making a public profession of their faith without fear of harm or retribution.

In addition, the great news of God’s work continued in the service as Bishop Stanton announced, “Holy Faith Episcopal Church is the newest mission of the Diocese of Dallas!” This new mission came as a result of the relationship between Gateway of Grace Refugee Ministries, the Bhutanese pastor, and his congregation. That relationship formed in early 2012 as Gateway of Grace immediately began to help meet the practical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the Bhutanese refugees. Gateway of Grace was later able to connect their pastor with Canon Victoria Heard at the Diocesan office. Through Canon Heard’s efforts and Bishop Stanton’s gracious and open heart, the Bhutanese congregation quickly became a vibrant church plant of the Diocese! Glory be to God! It is encouraging to see the hope of these Christian refugees despite their suffering in their homeland of Bhutan. They came from a Hindu culture where most of them were associ-

ated with the lowest caste. A few of them were considered by Hindus as “Untouchables,’’ often considered as less than human. However, during that Sunday service at Trinity Church, these dear souls were not only affirmed with full dignity as human beings, created in God’s Image, they were also welcomed as Children of God with all the rights and responsibilities of any believer in Jesus Christ. This is only one example of God’s amazing and redemptive work experienced by refugees who come through Gateway of Grace. Gateway of Grace was founded by Samira Izadi in 2011. Born and raised in Iran as a Muslim, she and her family fled Iran due to persecution and obtained political asylum status in the U.S. Samira converted to Christianity shortly after arriving in the U.S. She immediately became a student of the Holy Scriptures, consuming as much of it as often as possible. That devotion to knowing God and what it meant to be a faithful servant eventually led her to Perkins School of Theology where she earned a Masters of Divinity. She

combines her personal experiences as a refugee and her educational focus on evangelism and church mobilization to frame her role as Executive Director of Gateway of Grace. Her heart’s desire is to bring the hope and love of Christ to those whose hope, dignity, and humanity have been taken away by oppressive governments and circumstances. Refugees are those who have been dislocated by force due to war, ethnic cleansing, or political and religious persecution, and have crossed an international border to save their lives. The overwhelming majority left everything, except what they could carry in hand. They often faced dangerous and abusive circumstances in some refugee camps. Their refugee status wait time can range from a few months to 20 years or more, depending on what country initially receives them. With no place to call home, most hope for a new life in America. Texas is the largest hub for refugees in the U.S. with an average of 3000 arrivals per year in North Texas alone. Gateway of Grace partners with churches by helping them form ministry teams that adopt refugee families. The refugee ministry team from Church of the Incarnation has adopted a young Iraqi family that became refugees as a result of helping American soldiers. The father of two pre-school boys told the ministry team, “When I was in Iraq, I could not form real friendships because I could not trust anyone, but you guys are different!” One of the goals of Gateway of Grace is that each refugee experiences the unconditional love of Christ through his people who volunteer with the ministry. Gateway of Grace has demonstrated that kind of love to more than 250 refugees so far. But, many more will arrive who are weary, worried, and feeling unwelcomed. Pray that God will place them in the path of Gateway of Grace volunteers so those refugees too can experience authentic Christian love. Would you prayerfully consider becoming a volunteer or financially supporting Gateway of Grace? Samira would appreciate the opportunity discuss the ministry over a cup of coffee. Contact her at samira@gatewayofgrace.org or by calling 469-324-8825.

THE LOOMING TOWER by Lawrence Wright

A gripping narrative that spans Father five decades, The Looming Matthew Tower explains in unprecedented detail the growth of Islamic fundamentalism, the rise of Al-Qaeda, and the intelligence failures that culminated in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Lawrence Wright re-creates firsthand the transformation of Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri from incompetent and idealistic soldiers in Afghanistan to leaders of the most successful terrorist group in history. He follows FBI counterterrorism chief John O’Neill as he uncovers the emerging danger from al-Qaeda in the 1990s and struggles to track this new threat. Packed with new information and a deep historical perspective, The Looming Tower is the definitive history of the long road to September 11. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

UNION WITH GOD by Blessed Columba Marmion Union with God is a collection of Father letters written by Blessed Columba Joe Marmion to the many persons who sought his spiritual counsel with questions about prayer, faith, temptation, suffering, and the struggles of daily life. Marmion excelled in the art of letter-writing — his advice was always simple and direct, yet profound. In his letters we see him bringing to bear his great depth of theological knowledge in a practical and human way. Union with God offers warm, practical counsel from a spiritual master whom Popes and Bishops looked to for inspiration. Book descriptions compliments of Amazon.com

The College Group facebook:

The words outside of our church building read: Church of the Incarnation. These same words within the church building are imprinted on our literature, stationary and other signage. We have the privilege and opportunity to live out our lives in the same way the Incarnate One did, the Person of Jesus. He said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” We believe that The Student Ministry at Incarnation, should be about connection. Nothing more, nothing less. Our desire is for every student to connect with God. Our desire is for us to be connected with one another. Sharing life with one another. The fundamental reason as to why we have a Student Ministry program is to use it as a vehicle to help accomplish our purpose. In accomplishing our purpose, it will always be necessary to focus on our primary values when designing the weekly, monthly, and various other activities. We also believe that parents are an integral part of the program and there are a variety of ways parents can be involved in the Student Ministry at Incarnation.

THE SUMMER MISSION TRIP

THE ESPANA PROJECT, JULY 21-30 SEVILLE, SPAIN Our group will be saturated with work and relational ministry. Painting, construction, helping with new churches in two communities, outreach to people in the neighborhood. For those that are going, and for those that are not, the parish of Incarnation is a huge part of this trip. Read these startling words: “In the recent strategy of world missions, many have spoken of the 10/40 window and the AD 2000 movement. The most recent research, however, has shown that in all the continents of the world, the Church of our Lord is growing except for one: in Europe, where the Church is actually shrinking. So much so, that missionologists are now referring to Europe as the newest most darkened continent of the world in terms of Gospel light. Now is not the time to turn our backs on Europe, in spite of growing economic problems, rampant socialism, rising minority religions and generalized apathy, Europe needs the Gospel now like never before. ”So we are going to serve our Lord in Spain. Please pray for this mission experience.

The Virgin of the Sign “Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign; behold a Virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Emmanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

T

he Icon of “The Virgin of the Sign” depicts the Holy Virgin in a gesture that signifies a prayerful appeal to God. Her arms are upraised with her elbows bent. The origin of this image is ancient, being found in the catacombs of the earliest Christians. At the Council of Ephesus in 413AD, the Fathers of the church formally declared Mary the Theotokos or Mother of God. This designation is important because this icon is a depiction of the incarnation of God in Mary’s womb. Icons of the Virgin of the Sign date from Russia in the eleventh century. In this icon the Virgin Mary is facing the viewer with her hands raised in the orans (prayerful) position. The image of Christ is in a round nimbus representing her womb. At the moment of conception Christ is shown not as a fetus or even as an infant, but as Emmanuel, the Christ, the Eternal Son and Creator of the world. The symbolic meaning refers to the two natures of Christ, a child in Mary’s womb and

fully present within Mary who contains in her womb that which is uncontainable. On Christ’s halo we see the Greek letters which stand for I Am that I Am. This is a further reminder that this is God Himself. The colors chosen for Mary’s robes are very traditional, iconographic colors. The outer garment is red, signifying Mary’s humanity. The blue inner garment signifies the divinity that she carries within her. The gold detail on her outer robe reminds us of her status as a queen. At the moment she becomes the mother of the King of Heaven, she New Icon (Near Good Shepherd Altar), “The Virgin of the Sign” by Jane Ladik becomes his queen. and after the birth of Christ. The eight points on the stars signify the eighth day of creation. The color of the under robe of Christ signifies the dawn of the new day. The outer robe is a bright red with gold, which speaks of his glorious Passion. The decoration on his shirt refers to the Holy Trinity. He raises his right hand in blessing and in his left hand he holds a scroll proclaiming Himself as the Word of God. At the top of the icon we see the Seraphim. They are calling one to another, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord Almighty, the whole earth is filled with His glory.” Isaiah 6:3 The colors chosen for the Seraphim represent the two natures of Christ. The use of gold in the icon points to that which is eternal. The use of gold in the back-

ground lets us know that the Incarnation of Christ through Mary has eternal consequences, not just for mankind, but for all of creation. This idea becomes a meditation of the icon for we learn in Romans 8:19-22 that, “the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.” Every detail of this icon of the Incarnation speaks this most precious mystery: the God and King of the Universe came to us as a new born babe, to seek us and to die for us. As John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
