SPRING 2013 INCARNATION RESOURCE GUIDE

CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRIES (CFM) GODLY PLAY Ages 3 – 2nd Grade, 10:20am – 11:05am Upstairs In The Education (South) Building

Godly Play is a Montessori approach to teaching Bible stories, the Sacraments, and sacred time to children. It utilizes a discovery method of teaching with welldesigned, developmentally appropriate story-telling materials in a child-scale classroom. The goal is that children come to know God—not just about God— and prepare to participate more fully in parish worship and service as they grow older.

NOTE: Children must be 3 years old by Sept. 1, 2012 and potty-trained to participate in Godly Play.

Godly Play, 3rd Grade Connections! 10:20am – 11:05am | Education (South) Bldg, Rm 226

This class combines Godly Play and other curriculum using art, music and drama to study the Bible. Kids will connect with friends and faith in an exciting way.

I-45 4th & 5th grade | 10:20am-11:05am 1st Floor, Education (South) Building, East Hallway

I-45 is an exciting ministry program exclusively for fourth and fifth graders, designed to introduce them to a deeper level of Christian discipleship, as well as help prepare them for the unique challenges and opportunities they will encounter in young adolescence. Sunday mornings will include relevant teaching, small group breakout sessions, and fun activities and games. There will also be opportunities for fellowship and service outside of the classroom. To register for GODLY PLAY, CONNECTIONS, or 1-45, please visit:

www.incarnation.org/reg4ss or contact us at CFM@Incarnation.org.

Kingdom Kids

Worship for Young Children Potty-Trained 3 Year Olds – 1st Grade 9am | Downstairs In The Education Building, Bethlehem Chapel

Family worship is very important at Church of the Incarnation, but we realize that our youngest members may have a difficult time sitting through an entire service. In order to assist parents, we created Kingdom Kids, a Sunday Worship option for children ages 3 (and potty-trained) through 1st grade. For parents who would like to utilize this ministry, children are dropped off at the Kingdom Kids classroom, located downstairs in the Education building on the east side of the Great Hall. They will enjoy playtime, music, a short Bible story, and will then be led into the church & chapel services so that you may worship together as a family during the celebration of Holy Communion. Contact: Steffanie Methvin at smethvin@incarnation.org, 214-217-5658.

Nursery Ages Birth – 5 Years Old | 8:45am – 12:45pm Downstairs In The Education Building

Incarnation encourages families to worship together, but we also understand the need for loving and nurturing childcare on Sunday mornings. Babies and children (birth to 5 years old) are welcome in the nursery, located downstairs in the Education building (the south & west hallways). Please bring diapers, a change of clothes, bottles and snacks.

CONTACT: Jill Bellew, jbellew@incarnation.org NOTE: Potty-trained 3 year olds through first graders may participate in Kingdom Kids during the 9am family services. SPRING 2013 INCARNATION RESOURCE GUIDE

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and Love your neighbor as yourself.

The words outside of our church building read “Church of the Incarnation. These same words within the

church building are imprinted on our literature, stationery and other signage. We have the privilege and opportunity to live out our lives in the same way the Incarnate One did, the Person of Jesus. We believe that the Student Ministry at Incarnation should be about connection. Nothing more, nothing less. Our desire is for every student to connect with God. Our desire is for us to be connected with one another. Sharing life with one another. The fundamental reason as to why we have a Student Ministry program is to use it as a vehicle to help accomplish our purpose. In accomplishing our purpose, it will always be necessary to focus on our primary values when designing the weekly, monthly, and various other activities. We also believe that parents are an integral part of the program and there are a variety of ways parents can be involved in the Student Ministry at Incarnation.

We welcome you to The Student Ministry at Church of the Incarnation! 8

A MESSAGE FROM FR GREG METHVIN

Masada

Our church provides beautiful worship, enriching Bible studies, meaningful mission opportunities and delightful fellowship. In June 2013, Church of the Incarnation will offer a life-changing experience to journey to and through the Holy Land. Jerome, who translated an early version of the Bible into Latin, referred to Israel as the “fifth gospel.” His experience, studying and writing there, gave him so many new insights and experiences with our Lord that it felt as though he were meeting Jesus anew.

Wailing Wall

Working closely with Morning Star Tours, we have carefully selected travel arrangements and accommodations that are safe, comfortable and memorable. In addition to an outstanding itinerary, we will also be joined on our trip by Dr. Carl Anderson, noted pastor, teacher and Old Testament scholar. Many of you enjoyed his Tuesday Bible Studies offered last school year at our church. He has travelled to Israel numerous times and will share his knowledge and insights as we go. I’m especially looking forward to joining you on our spiritual pilgrimage. My past trip to Israel stays fresh on my mind, and gave me such a deeper appreciation and insight into the Holy Scriptures and my relationship with God.

Petra in Jordan

We will renew our baptismal vows at the Jordan River, and share Holy Communion where Jesus called and cultivated friendships with his first followers. We will offer prayers of healing where Jesus powerfully healed the sick, distressed and burdened. I’m delighted to invite you to prayerfully consider joining me, and Dr. Carl Anderson, on this faith adventure!

Mission & Outreach Project Manager ependleton@incarnation.org 214.217. 5639

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39) At Incarnation, we believe that the heart of the Christian life is a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. And because God first loved us by reaching out to us in Christ, we reach out to others in love as well. Jesus taught that when we serve our neighbors—even something as small as giving a child a cup of water– we’re serving Christ too, and growing closer to Him. As the body of Christ, we seek to be God’s hands and feet in the world, putting the love of Jesus into action all around us. Our Neighborhood Our church has a longstanding legacy of serving needs right here in our own neighborhood. We’ve partnered with local agencies and schools, and started several projects ourselves. Find out more about what we’re doing and how you can help serve the world right on your doorstep by visiting our website at www.incarnation.org!

Our Young Adults ministry has continued to be one of the most active and fastest growing segments of our parish life. For years our happy hours, “Conversations” series, and our weekly Sunday School class have been consistently well–attended, successful programs where young adults have been able to make friends and grow deeper in their faith. We are continuing to build on this great foundation in several ways. We will take some dedicated time to take a deep breath and focus our hearts on the Lord on our Hill Country Getaway, February 8–10 Secondly, we are ever seeking to expand our young adults small groups, and this Spring is no different. We will be launching new groups, while we celebrate and encourage the growth of our existing groups. Finally, we are deepening our ministry focus to accommodate the many different ages and life stages represented in our young adults ministry. Some in our group find it easiest to make friends

We will be forming groups around numerous different interests and life stages. Join us! I’m sure there’s a place in our young adults ministry where you can grow deeper in your faith as we grow closer to one another.

Lectionary Bible Study continues Jan. 2

Wednesdays at 7:30am in the Great Hall Dining Room with Prof. Timothy Ralston

From earliest times (inherited from the synagogue and Christ’s own practice) the Church has had the Bible placed before it in an orderly way. Concern for understanding the Bible’s own internal relationships; hearing it in a comprehensive way; and guarding some sense of the narrative line (especially of the Gospels) have been the hallmarks of how the Bible has been presented in the Church.

CLASSES continued Preaching in the context of Sunday worship takes its bearing from this presentation, but the lessons as chosen reflect certain important relationships that are best understood through teaching and explication. Join us Sunday for a time of study of the Bible in the Presentation of the Church. All are welcome and please bring your Bibles (RSV translation preferred).

Exe-Jesus: Reading the Old Testament with the Ancient Church to Understand Jesus (4 wks) Wednesdays – Feb. 20, 27; Mar. 6 (no class Mar. 13) & Mar. 20 7pm - 8pm in The Flat with Deacon Paul Wheatley

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus interpreted from “all the Scriptures the things concerning himself ” to His followers, “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets” (Lk. 24.27). St. Paul preached that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was raised on the third day “according to the Scriptures,” (1Cor. 15.3–4) using language for the Old Testament witness concerning Jesus that the authors of the Nicene Creed later adopted. How did the first few centuries of the Church understand Jesus Christ “according to the [Old Testament] Scriptures?” Join us as Deacon Paul guides us through four weeks looking into how the Ancient Church mined the riches of the Old Testament to understand Christ.

Building a Faith That Works: A Study of James continues Jan. 10

Thursdays at 9am in the Family Ministry Room with Robert Perkins St. James’s letter to the universal church is both very practical and very controversial. How can we resolve St. Paul’s view of justification with that of St. James? That tension will be carefully examined in this expository and in-depth study. It is open to all. Come join us as we grow together through the study of the Holy Scriptures, given to us through the Church. Please bring your Bible.

The Deeper Life

SPECIAL CLASS Sundays in April in Memorial Chapel with Fr Matthew Olver In St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he prays that they may share with the saints “the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge” in order that they “may be filled with all the fulness of God” (Eph 3:19). The Scriptures, the great patristic commentators, and the great mystics of the Church (e.g. St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross) all assume that this is not meant to be confined to an elite few, but rather that God desires this for every Christian. This class will look at the building blocks of the spiritual life, Jesus’ teaching on prayer with the Our Father, the praying of the Scriptures, the stages of the spiritual life, and how to form a rule of life.

Parents: Take Back Your Family! SPECIAL CLASS Sundays in April in The Great Hall with Cathie Butler Looney

The 5th Commandment, “Honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you” would be the guide to the class. The commandment simply assumes that children will love their parents. Love is a natural impulse; honor is a moral choice. Honor respects the gap between; love bridges it. Honor and love need each other. Without love honor is frigid, strained, forced, infected with resentment, a hollow shell of polite anger. Without honor love lacks structure and is eventually destructive. Between parents and child, love without honor stands family life on its head. Today, parenting has become so complicated. Parents become uncertain on how to handle this job. In this class we would explore how can work, live and love as a family. The parents being the loving, benevolent authority figures who teach and guide their children how to leave them and go out in world knowing how the real world works so they can make this world a better place always knowing “Jesus Loves Me.” SPRING 2013 INCARNATION RESOURCE GUIDE

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES | 10:20am - 11:05am | Janu FOR FAMILIES

Invitation to a Journey in The Studio with Cynthia Krause

Today even “traditional families” with children come in many shapes and sizes such as sandwich parents, and having kids with differing development levels. Though the joys and challenges of various stages can be different, there are many similarities. For Christian parents, a profound truth binds us together: We will not effectively navigate the shifting sands of our lives and our relationships with those we love without a growing, deepening relationship with God. If your search for a deeper relationship with God has led you to techniques, methods, or programs to help you “achieve” spiritual wholeness, this class will explore a better way. Professor and author, Robert Mulholland, Jr.’s profound book, Invitation To A Journey: A Road Map For Spiritual Formation, will guide our study and conversation. Join with parents with children, of all ages, and take the journey together.

Family Matters

in the Marmion Conference Room with Wes Holmes & Dr. Ben Albritton This class seeks to apply Scripture and psychology in a practical way to the life of the family. Everyone is called to be conformed to the image of Christ. In this supportive fellowship, we will explore what this looks like in our relationships with our spouses and children as we strive for holiness and to be faithful to Christ. Topics include strengthening our marriages and child raising issues. All parents are welcome.

Maintaining Your Faith in a Pagan Culture – A Study of Daniel

in Room 114, across from the Outreach office with Robert Perkins As our society becomes post-Christian at warpspeed, the Old Testament book of Daniel offers us much insight as to how we might adapt to rapid changes in culture and still maintain a vital commitment to our Savior, to His church and to our own personal faith. Come see how God - who is presented as sovereign over all things and all times continues to work out His will through pagan kings, fantastic situations and faithful followers.

GROWING IN YOUR FAITH

On the Canterbury Trail:

An Introduction to Christian Belief, the Sacraments and Worship, and the Life of Prayer in the Choir Room with Fr Joe Hermerding & Deacon Paul Wheatley Adult Baptism and/or Confirmation Preparation During the semester, we will explore three major topics: the basic teachings and beliefs of the Christian Church (including what it means to be a Christian); the Sacraments and worship life of the Church, with particular attention to the Anglican/ Episcopal tradition and our history; and the life of prayer that God intends and desires for every Christian and the tools and teaching given by the Church to assist us in knowing the Lord in this way. Saturday, March 2, will be one of the highlights of the class. From noon until 5pm, we will gather for lunch and for the two most important talks of the class: first, on what it means to gives one’s life over to Jesus, and second, on how Jesus sustains us and centers our worship through Holy Communion (sometimes called the Holy Eucharist or Mass.) Adult Baptisms: Saturday, March 30 (Easter Vigil), 8pm Adult Confirmation: Sunday, May 5, 9am

uary 6 - March 24 Young Adults

in The Welcome Center with Ryan Waller The Young Adults Sunday School class is a comfortable place for our young adults to meet, fellowship, and study not only Scripture but the relevant issues of our day. This class is a great way to begin getting involved in the life of our church as a young adult, and meet some of the many people growing in their faith at Incarnation.

Sacramental Giving

in the Great Hall Dining Room with David Krause Are you a consumer or a Christian? Following Christ is, by definition, counter-cultural. How do you understand your own discipleship within our affluent culture? The biblical witness tells us that the act of giving is a spiritual gift and, in fact, the best aerobic spiritual activity in which we can engage. Please join us for this journey deepening your discipleship in a most sacred place: your pocketbook.

Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion (with attention to both the theology and the liturgy itself ); the origin of the Anglican Communion; and conclude on Palm Sunday with a look at the Holy Week services. The purpose of the Prayer Book is to help us to pray as a community of believers with Christians throughout time. If you want to grow in your faith and take advantage of all the gifts of the Anglican tradition, this class is for you.

A Sacrifice of Praise: A Beginner’s Guide to Anglican Worship & The Book of Common Prayer in the Memorial Chapel with Fr Matthew Olver The Book of Common Prayer is central to the Anglican/Episcopal identity and connects us to the ancient Church. But for most people, its length and complexity mean that they have only opened it once or twice. This class will be a beginner’s guide to the Prayer Book and to the Anglican tradition. We’ll look at the origin of the Prayer Book and how it is laid out; the structure of the Church Year and the calendar of seasons, feasts and fasts; the Daily Office; the Sacraments, particularly

COMMUNITY LIFE GROUPS continued Incarnation Men’s Fellowship (IMF)

INClings

Our mission is to foster a community of men at Church of the Incarnation in fellowship with the Holy Ghost. The community is comprised of a cross section of men from all generations of the Parish Family –married and single, young and old. IMF is not a Bible study, per se. We have no agenda or objective other than to explore and express our interests, ideals and experiences in a congenial atmosphere and on equal terms. IMF is a community where men may explore the riches of our Parish Family and the Anglican Tradition, seek wisdom, explore callings, gain encouragement and be sent out for ministry. Finally, it is a place to return for rest after service, to share what was learned and continue to discern how to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.

We will be studying selected essays by Dorothy L. Sayers and her essays.
