Each year a Nominating Committee prepares a slate of candidates for the parish’s consideration at the Annual Meeting, to be held in February. At the Annual Meeting, we elect five parishioners to the Vestry for a term of three years. The Nominating Committee consists of the five retiring members of the current Vestry, along with up to 10 additional “members at large,” i.e. lay people selected from the congregation who meet the same standards as those whom they propose to nominate for election. The goal is to convene a Committee that fully represents the Parish and its activities and interests. The Chairman of the Committee is the Senior Warden, and the Rector is an Ex-Officio member. The Bylaws of the Parish, which conform with the Canons of the Diocese of Dallas, prescribe the conditions that must be met to be eligible for election to the Vestry: “Any confirmed communicant in good standing who is at least 18 years of age and who has been a financial contributor of record for one year before the election takes place is eligible to serve as a Vestry member.” One condition requires further explanation: A communicant, i.e. one who is confirmed and is formally on the rolls of Church of the Incarnation, must have established a record of giving that includes a pledge for the current calendar year. The minimum requirements aside, members of the Vestry and candidates for this position of leadership must have demonstrated a strong commitment to be in Church every Sunday, Holy Days of Obligation, and other days of special devotion. The first and most solemn duty of a member of the Vestry is to lead by deed and example. Note: Spouses of Incarnation staff or clergy members are not permitted for nomination. All members in good standing of the Parish are encouraged to become involved in the nominating process. You may do this by submitting your recommendation to the Rector’s office.

PLEASE USE THE VESTRY NOMINATION FORM THAT CAN BE FOUND LOCATED AROUND THE CHURCH, OR FILL OUT A FORM ONLINE AT INCARNATION.ORG.

YOU CAN DO IT

we can help

By The Reverend Joseph Hermerding Children & Family Ministry

There’s a song we sing in our Incarnation Academy chapel services which goes like this: “I may never march in the infantry, ride in the cavalry, shoot the artillery…but I’m in the Lord’s army—yes, sir!” And as I look out over the dozens and dozens of young children singing at the top of their lungs, I sometimes think: “…may fight in the army? By the way things seem to be going in the world today, it is more and more likely that you will have to fight.” These are uncertain times, especially for parents. Our God, however, is not uncertain. And He’s not nervous or anxious about the future. He holds it in His hands. And He holds the future of our children in His hands as well. And as the Children & Family Ministry staff, we feel deeply inspired to give parents a different message about parenting from the wider culture. A message of hope. The message is this: You can do it. We can help. Now more than ever, we parents need to be intentional about passing on our faith and values to our children. Sound intimidating? It does to me. How can I possibly do that, while juggling everything else in my life? Our answer is FaithPath. What is FaithPath? FaithPath is a group of 13 age-specific resources for you as a parent, to help you raise your child to love and follow Jesus Christ. How does FaithPath work? In the month of your child’s birthday, you, the parent, will receive an email from the church. This email will alert you to the free resource that will be available to you, with your child’s name on it, at the Bringing Faith Home Center right outside the Incarnation Bookstore. This resource will contain the topic that is most appropriate to your child's developmental stage. We call these resources FaithPath Guides. Each Guide will contain suggestions, actionable ideas, best practices, and further resources for you, the parent, as you guide the spiritual formation of your child in an age-appropriate way. You can access all of the resources by visiting incarnation.org/bringingfaithhome. If we have your email and your child’s information in our church database, you are automatically enrolled in this initiative. If you have a new email or any other questions about FaithPath, please reach out to us at cfm@incarnation.org.

WHAT ARE THE 13 STEPS? 1. PREPARING FOR BAPTISM (newborn) 2. PRAYING FOR YOUR CHILD (age 1) 3. FAMILY TIME (age 2) 4. PRAYING WITH YOUR CHILD (age 3) 5. WORSHIP (age 4) 6. LEARNING OUR LITURGY (age 5) 7. BIBLE (age 6) 8. GIVING AND SERVING (age 8) 9. PREPARING FOR ADOLESCENCE (age 10) 10. CONFIRMATION (age 11) 11. PURITY (age 12) 12. TEENAGERS (age 13) 13. LAUNCH

By Ellen Welch Parishioner & Angel Tree Champion

The Angel Tree Ministry, during the Christmas season, is a long-standing tradition at Incarnation that has grown significantly over the years. In the 60s, the church began providing meals and presents for needy families, and as our church grew, so did our capacity to assist others. We strive to minister to and serve the neediest of our neighbors. Jesus taught that when we serve our neighbors we are serving Christ, too, and growing closer to Him. As the body of Christ, we seek to be God’s hands and feet in this world, putting the love of Jesus into action all around us. In early-September, the Mission & Outreach department begins working with counselors at our neighborhood schools to obtain the names of families who are most in need during the holidays. In addition, we seek out families from agencies we partner with such as Mosaic Family Services, AIDS Ministry, and Gateway of Grace, and this year we will include several seniors from Cathedral Gardens. The final component of Angel Tree is the names of 100 children we receive from Child Protective Services (CPS). These CPS children have often just entered the system during the holidays and are in need of our support.

supplement these boxes with mac & cheese, peanut butter, and cereal. Children particularly enjoy being a part of the process by adding some of their favorite items to the collection baskets. We count on these special donations each year to reduce the overall cost of the food the church must purchase. When the gifts have been purchased and wrapped, church members bring their gifts to the Welcome Center during the Holiday Gift Drop-Off Party. New last year, this party also provides a time for festive holiday fellowship with each other and is a visible sign of just how many people participate in this program. The party has something for everyone in the family including music from the gospel choir from Central Dallas Church, cookie decorating, Santa’s letter writing stations, wine & cheese, and hot chocolate. The following day, teams of volunteers busily begin making boxes and packing the purchased and donated food for each family. By the end of the morning, the huge stacks of individual groceries are boxed, labeled, and ready for pick up.

Ho Ho Hope

Once the counselors identify specific families for Angel Tree, the family completes a form with their children’s ages and sizes and their specific wants and needs. These lists are then offered up for adoption to our congregation each Sunday. Families range in size from 2–10 or more. Anyone can adopt a family or child. Adopters then shop for their selected family using the “wish lists” provided at adoption. Many adopters use this opportunity to teach their children about serving others and enlist their help in selecting the gifts. Church groups often adopt larger families so each group member can provide for a child in the family. Some parishioners are not able to fully adopt a family, but generously provide support to offset other costs. Along with the presents, Incarnation provides three large boxes of food staples for each family. The grocery list is carefully compiled with input from the counselors and families so that it contains the items most needed and used. During November, a food drive is also conducted throughout the church to

Once everything is sorted, boxed, wrapped, and tagged, the real joy begins! On Friday, our partner agencies arrive to pick up groceries and gifts for the families in their care. On Saturday morning, the Angel Tree families from the area schools come to the church to pick up their gifts and groceries. Breakfast treats and coloring tables entertain the families while they eagerly await their gifts. Many are simply overwhelmed as the gifts are loaded in their cars, and some are just amazed at the unexpected gift of food. All leave knowing that our church cares about them as a part of our community. Last year, the Angel Tree ministry adopted 193 families— 106 through partner agencies and 86 from area schools. In addition, we adopted 80 CPS children bringing the total number of individuals served to an all-time high of 711. Over 60 volunteers provided their time at the drop-off party, bag and tag presents, make food boxes, sort and pack groceries, and load presents and food for each Angel Tree family. As with all Mission & Outreach projects, those who participate in the Angel Tree ministry always comment that they gain so much by providing presents and food and helping with the project. One volunteer shared Proverbs 18:16: “A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great.” The season for sharing your gifts is nearing.

TO PURSUE NEW LIFE 12

ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

By Kate Smith Uptown Fellows Director

Maybe it isn’t too far back for you to remember the sweating palms and the faster heart rate. The gulp in your throat and the knot in your chest when you were taking the last box out of your College apartment and having to voice that nagging thought of “What do I do now?” Sometimes the mythology cultivated by various college brochures is the promise that education will provide all the answers to the great “What’s next” questions of life, but the reality is that many college students graduate with as many questions as answers. Questions like “How do I develop opportunities in my field?” And for Christian students, there are even more nagging questions. The “How does God want to use me?” and “Can I make an impact in God’s Kingdom and also pursue some of the gifts and resources he has given me?” The Uptown Fellows Program supports young Christian Leaders in this transitional time that interweaves both faith and career. The goal of the program is that after living in community and being integrated into Incarnation’s church family, they will feel that they can connect the areas of their personal strength in service to the career of their choice. They can also mission and serve the local church, while having experienced regional outreach and the national impact of the Fellows program. Now, I know that you’re thinking “That’s a tall order for people in their twenties.” I would agree with you, except that I’ve met them. The Fellows in our church have already been serving in various ministries on Sundays, learning in Fr. Austin’s Theology class, helping gut houses in Houston, and will be meeting with other Fellows from around the nation in D.C. this winter, and they’ve only been with us since August! They do all of this with acknowledgement of the sleep deprivation required and continue each day with smiles on their faces. This year many of our recent graduates are passionate about serving in areas of tech and design, education, counseling, and helping the vulnerable escape a life of human trafficking. It is a serious honor to know and serve with them. If you haven’t had an opportunity to get involved with the Uptown Fellows program, I would encourage it, because your

life experience, the way that you personally have integrated your walk with Christ and your work, is an invaluable resource to these young adults. You can sign up for a Monday Night Dinner where you can meet the Fellows, or lead a teaching while another family hosts if the thought of making macaroni & cheese for a group fills you with fear. You can also sign up to be a mentor to a Fellow, or you can just spend time hanging out with them. Some families just have them over for football and conversation. Seriously, you will not regret a hang out night with these fun people. You will also run into the Fellows as they lead your children’s confirmation classes, serve in youth events, and mentor students at Incarnation House and Reading Buddies. So, when you see one of them, stop and have a conversation and see how their year is going. They are all really interesting, and some of them even have great socks to inspire your own wardrobe choices. These students work at the church on Mondays and Fridays and also receive Spiritual Direction classes with Fr. Yoder, Theological classes with Fr. Austin, and Career Counseling with Becky Clark. Some of them work in paid positions at companies and others need to be funded through congregation members or grants to pursue jobs in the nonprofit sector. If you’re wondering how to connect, you can set up a meeting with me (Kate Smith) on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Fridays or email me at fellows@incarnation.org. Who is this “Kate Smith” that you never see on Sundays? Well, glad you asked. I actually attend St. Paul’s Episcopal in Prosper, Texas, where my husband Tom is the Vicar. Don’t worry too much about my commute though, it is a breather and a chance to listen to podcasts before I hang out with my husband and three kids, make supper, and collapse into bed after the fullness of life. Many of my passions intersect by being able to be part of the Fellows program. I have a Masters in Theological Studies from Wycliffe College, and many years of ministry experience including as a Children & Family Minister and as a leader with Women for Orphans & Widows (W.O.W.), a ministry advocating for women and children in Sub-Saharan Africa. I have been so impressed with Incarnation’s mission, staff, and parishioners. The Fellows program would not exist without the purposeful care that Incarnation does to lead these young adults into their calling, to help them pursue new life. ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

A PATTERN FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW By Mark LaRoe President, The Incarnation Foundation

Jesus Christ gives us a road map for a faith foundation through the Great Commandment in Matthew 22:37, ‘Love the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.’ He then tells us in Matthew 28:19 to ‘Go and make disciples of all nations and share the Gospel with nonbelievers.’ “Joshua did the work he was called to do, and we do ours where we are called. At the end of our lives, we want to be able to look at God and hear Him say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servants,’” says Josh’s father, Rick Hayslett. Now I want to tell you a story about Joshua Snowden. None of us are born disciples or evangelists. Like so many kids who are raised up in the youth programs at Incarnation, Joshua Snowden learned about the power of the Gospel through worship, fellowship, and service to his neighbor. It provided the faith foundation for Joshua to become a leader. Unlike most of his peers, Joshua decided before graduating high school that he wanted to join the United States Marine Corps. Through this experience, something clicked for Joshua aligning his work and the ministry he was called to do. Joshua was a remarkable example of bold, passionate, and humble discipleship. Through the discipline he learned as a Marine, he excelled in college and continued learning the mechanical and technical aspects of the KC-130 T model planes for which he was responsible as a flight engineer and instructor. Many of his peers reported that on long flights, if Josh was not reading the flight manual, he was reading his Bible. His thirst for knowledge was unquenchable. He lived among men who respected him but didn’t necessarily have the same spiritual journey. He met others where they were but still lived in such a way that set him apart as a strong Christian. For example, everyone knew Josh would be home on Saturday night in time to get a good night’s sleep before church the next morning, and he would agree to no plans—even football—until after he’d attended Sunday service. He brought passion and vibrancy to a party, but was first and foremost, a follower of Christ.

Living a disciplined life of prayer and study brings about certain behaviors. When you do things the right way, you become a leader and set a pattern for others to follow. Josh’s faith made him bigger than life. He was able to put ministry at the forefront of everything he did speaking out against misplaced values and always asking the hard questions. He ran wholeheartedly after the Lord and loved his neighbors. Josh’s life modeled Christ’s teachings of discipleship in every way possible. Before he was tragically killed in a military plane crash this summer, he very likely hadn’t thought about the extent of his influence on family, friends, and the countless people he encountered during his life—most of us do not. However, because of the way Joshua lived and the impact he had on so many, establishing an unrestricted fund with The Incarnation Foundation to continue his legacy was an obvious choice for his family. We all have an opportunity to intentionally and proactively create a legacy that demonstrates values and creates a road map for what we want our loved ones to continue to believe in and support. Many other families have established funds honoring their loved ones for the benefit of the youth program, the poor, seminarian tuition support, and the music ministry at Incarnation. There are many other options, too, for expressing thankfulness for God’s abundant love, grace, and provision through The Incarnation Foundation. The Foundation serves to assist you in administering financial gifts that outlast life’s end including making gifts, establishing funds, and designating Incarnation as a beneficiary in one of the assets of your estate plan among many other options. Because generations before us made it possible for us to worship God and grow in the teachings of Jesus Christ, it is our responsibility to continue the pattern for others to follow. Have you thought about or talked with your family about what you value and the legacy you want to leave? Visit IncarnationFoundation.org to learn more about ways to give and how the Foundation ensures a strong future for the parish you love.

community health fair recap Dear Health Fair Volunteers, Thank you for a successful Community Health Fair! It is so rewarding to see how the community pulls together to deliver free, much needed services to our neighbors. With music blaring, Zumba class dancing, and McGruff mingling, there was an atmosphere of fun and fellowship. We served about 300 people with 75 sports physicals, 155 immunizations, and 68 dental exams. Of the ten organizations that contributed time and talent, almost all have been involved for eight years, since the inception of the Health Fair. Twenty-five families walked away with a bike, helmet, and lock; 75 others took home bike helmets. Every family received a reusable grocery bag with fruit, water, and a soccer ball, as well as other health information. We also provided spring sports physicals to athletes that began competing before the Health Fair. Between our spring sports physicals and the health fair, three students were identified with serious health conditions and subsequently were referred to Children’s Hospital. These cases would probably not have been identified otherwise. We are thankful for our partners: Caring for Children Foundation CareVan, Dallas County Medical Society Alliance, Texas A&M Dental School, Spokes for Folks, Dallas Independent School District, North Dallas Shared Ministries, North Dallas High School LULAC Council, Future Champs of Texas, Dallas Police Central Patrol Division and Dallas Fire Department. Further thanks to our fabulous emcee, CJ Johnson; Stephanie Kirby, Zumba instructor; Diabetes testing; and health information booths. The efforts of 176 volunteers from partners all over the city came together for an amazing health fair!

hurricane harvey relief recap You don’t expect to see traffic driving into a disaster zone—businesses up and running and not a National Guard vehicle in sight. And with one turn into a neighborhood, the landscape changed entirely. The water line could be seen from the road and the amount of debris in the front yard matched the amount of damage done by the rise of Cypress Creek. It was the first weekend since the water receded and the street was teeming with people taking advantage of the full day to clean out homes. An electrical truck turned into a relief effort truck, and the bed was lined with cases of water for the families who lost everything. The first disaster relief team was sent to muck houses for parishioners of a local Episcopal parish. In one of the homes, it became evident that the entire downstairs needed to be gutted. The Incarnation team set to work removing cabinets, sheetrock, insulation, floors, and furniture. Sheetrock peeled off the wall like butter; cabinet drawers still had water in them; and the mold was multiplying by the spore. The family was in good spirits even though they had lost everything. This had been their home for 42 years where they raised both of their daughters. When the waters started rising, they were boated to safety in the middle of the storm.

“Let us not love in words or speech but with action and truth.” 1 John 3:18 There is no better way to show the love of Jesus than to literally walk through the mess of life with people. To walk with our neighbors who have lost everything. To be a vessel of hope. To bring the glory of Jesus into the trenches. Thank you to all who served.
