Did you Know? Our carillon includes 4 swinging bells and 22 striking bells. One of the swinging bells is the parish’s original bell that has called people to worship at Incarnation since 1887. That bell was made in Troy, New York, weighs 600 pounds, and has a Latin inscription that begins, “Ecclesia Incarnationis, juxta Dallas, TX, A.D. 1887.” The inscription continues in Latin, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord: make straight His paths.” These magnificent musical instruments have been out of commission since January due to much needed refurbishment. Please join us in the Cloister at 10:20 am on Sunday, November 23, for a rededication ceremony lead by Bishop Lambert. Go to incarnation.org for more details closer to event date.

FR. JOE HERMERDING WITH SON, LUKE

A FAMILY MAN WITH A FAMILY PLAN “I felt a call to ministry at a very early age, perhaps 12 or 13 years old. At the time, I had never even heard of the Episcopal Church. But God slowly unfolded His path before me over the ensuing years. I am so thankful that God has blessed me with this tradition,” Fr. Joe shared with great enthusiasm. Fr. Joe has been ministering at Incarnation for two years. He was born in a small town in Minnesota. One of four children, he grew up in an evangelical church. His dad was a school teacher, and his mom stayed home with the kids. He left home for the big city of Chicago when he went to college, and graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Bible and Theology in 2006. It was there that he was introduced to the Episcopal Church for the first time. “There were many things that drew me into the Episcopal Church. I was captivated by the beauty of the liturgy, the depth of the theology, and impressed by the Church's hierarchical structure,” he explained. Fr. Joe married Ellora three weeks after they graduated from Wheaton, and off they went to seminary.

for Jesus said the kingdom of heaven belongs to them. “This ministry is very personal to me. I have three young kids of my own, all five years old and under. Ellora and I are very in-touch with the blessings and challenges of this stage of life," he said. It is the vision of the CFM department to be a place where parents can become equipped and empowered to disciple their children. The focus is not just on what happens to the kids at church, but also — and most importantly — how families live out their faith at home. “We are here to teach and to love the children of this parish,” Fr. Joe said. “But in reality, we only get to be with them for 40 minutes on a Sunday. That's why partnering with parents is so crucial to our vision. Together we will make the greatest impact. Think Home Depot — you can do it, and we can help.”

The Scriptures are the anchor for this partnership. The intention is not only to inform and teach children the stories of the Bible, but also to equip parents to live out the lessons that are learned from Scripture and our tradition. “We want to teach parents to be confident and competent spiritual leaders in their homes. My sense is “One of the most critical times of my that parents are hungry for this kind journey into the Episcopal Church was my of practical teaching. How do we time spent at Nashotah House Seminary pray with our kids? How do we read after college. It was there that the depth the Bible together as a family? How and breadth of the catholic faith began should I discipline my children as a to really take root in me,” Fr. Joe said. He Christian? There are so many questions graduated from Nashotah House with a to consider,” Fr. Joe said with great Masters of Divinity in 2009. The day after compassion. "The fundamental fact he graduated from seminary, May 16, about our children is that God created Fr. Joe Hermerding was ordained a priest. FR. More recently, Fr. Joe has taken on the newly created position of Associate Rector for Children & Family Fr. We want to walk this the spiritual formation of their families. We want to see each and walk with you; and we don’t just want moms — we want dads, every little child grow up to know and love the Lord.” too! I would love to hear from you. LOVE. LAUGH. LEARN. INCARNATION ACADEMY

Incarnation Academy has nearly tripled in size in seven short years. Why? Simply put, it’s the quality of learning and care. The teachers at Incarnation Academy are dedicated and qualified to prepare your child for the next steps in the educational journey. All pre-K 2, pre-K 3, and pre-K 4 teachers have an associate or bachelor degree in early childhood development or education or extensive experience in both. Also, one of the school’s pre-K 4 teachers, Margaret Ross, was named Teacher of the Year for DISD for several years before choosing to come to the Academy to share her gifts.

activities that meet the highest standards of early childhood education," Micah Crissey, Head of School, explained.

WE AREN’T BABYSITTERS; WE ARE A PRESCHOOL. WE TEACH. THEY LEARN. AND WE LOVE THEM THROUGH THE PROCESS.

Many kids who attend Incarnation Academy for preschool matriculate to Greenhill, Episcopal School of Dallas, Parish Episcopal, and many other highly reputable learning institutions across the city. In fact, they have 100% admittance rate to St. John’s Episcopal School specifically. More importantly, they are succeeding there. In addition to providing excellent teaching staff, Incarnation Academy dedicates valuable learning time each week during Chapel. The kids learn important lessons, sing songs, and receive birthday blessings from Fr. Joe Hermerding, Associate Rector of Children & Family Ministry. Incarnation Academy is a ministry of Church of the Incarnation. It is dedicated to providing a loving and stimulating environment in which young children can learn and develop. “Our program is designed to give children developmentally appropriate learning activities that challenge them to reach their full potential. The child’s spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and aesthetic growth is fostered through

“We aren’t babysitters; we are a preschool. We teach. They learn. And we love them through the process. We care about their futures and everything in between. We stay connected beyond their time here,” Micah said as she continued to share her philosophy for the school. “Like the parents, we want to see them grow and become the little people God intended them to be.” It is often difficult to work around the challenges that come with teaching in an older building, but the Academy has a wonderful relationship with the church. “They take great care of us,” Micah said. “The vestry and facilities teams executed an overhaul of the classrooms, hallways, and common areas just before school started this year. We are grateful for their leadership and support.“ Like most schools, Incarnation Academy needs volunteers. They need help with fundraising events, special events like the annual carnival, and many other significant areas of contribution. If you are interested in helping in any capacity, please contact Incarnation Academy Parents Association President, Amy Dicarlo, at IAPA@incarnation.org.

If you have a little one and are interested in more information on Incarnation Academy, please set a time to meet with Micah. She would love to hear from you. 214.522.0160 or mcrissey@incarnation.org. Save the date: Registration for 2015–2016 is Feb 4–6 Church members receive priority

COMMUNITY OF 75204+ Part 6 of a 6 part series on Understanding Our Community, and How to Reach Out to Them

BY DEACON DOROTHY BUDD AND THE MISSION & OUTREACH MINISTRY DEPARTMENT Demographic studies give us information that can change how we see things around us. Our study of the Community of 75204+ shows us that we are surrounded by neighbors, schools, and community organizations where real need exists, and it gives us facts and figures that quantify those needs. Over past issues of the Angelus we have broken down what those facts tell us about our neighborhood and our neighbors. Church of the Incarnation is at the epicenter of a community full of change, contrasts, and challenges. The charts, graphs, and tables of the demographic study reveal pivotal points in the lives of the children growing up in our neighborhood where the trajectory of their lives may change. We see that without good early childhood and preschool preparation, many of the children in our community start kindergarten lacking knowledge of an adequate number of words in their vocabulary to be ready to learn to read. If a child is not reading on grade level by third grade, their chances for academic success are severely impaired. By sixth grade, if a student has not made the transition from learningto-read to reading-to-learn the chance that they will drop-out before they graduate from high school is almost certain. Becoming homeless also affects many of our students’ chances of success. While these realities are sobering, they are also opportunities for us to embody Christ’s love. As our parish seeks to discern how to Discover, Deepen, and Deliver our own faith, the realities of our demographic study become an invitation for us to respond to Christ’s call to move into deeper discipleship. Our developing ministries to homeless students at North Dallas High School and Spence Middle School invite us to minister to kids in a way that can help keep them in school and break the cycle of homelessness. The most important thing our demographic study can do is not to change how we see our neighborhood and our neighbors, but to change how we see ourselves. If knowing the needs of our neighbors causes us to discover ways to serve, deepens our desire to do so, and helps us find a place in our neighborhood to deliver Christ’s love to those in need — then in the end, that will be the most impressive statistic of all. For more information of any of these ministries or to volunteer, please contact Mission & Outreach at outreach@incarnation.org

NEIGHBORHOOD PROGRAMS FOR DISADVANTAGED KIDS: At each of the pivotal moments of challenge in our neighbors’ lives, there are ways YOU can help READING BUDDIES The Reading Buddies program at

three of our elementary schools need volunteers who can give an hour a week to help unlock the world of reading to a child.

Volunteers are needed to attend and lead art projects. YOUNG LIFE The Urban Young Life program at North Dallas High School provides opportunities to expose students to Christ’s mission and to bring them closer through a structured program that builds around community, relationships, and shared experiences. Volunteers are needed to attend or lead meetings, serve meals, play games, and assist with fundraising activities. WYLD LIFE Similar to Young Life, this program is

offered at Spence Middle School where volunteers meet twice a month to show young teens Christ’s great and abiding love for them.

INCARNATION STARS MENTORING Volunteer to work with select North Dallas High School students by meeting on a monthly basis to teach self confidence, social skills, study habits, and life skills. This program is part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. SAT PREP PROGRAMS A free SAT test preparation

course is offered to North Dallas High School students every Monday in the summer and during the school year. Volunteers are needed to help promote the program.

OUT OF AFRICA A STORY ABOUT THE TRANSFORMATION OF SPIRIT

12

ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

BY ELLIE MACKINTOSH Writing from the coast of Kenya, I am Ellie Mackintosh sharing my missionary journey with Church of the Incarnation. I grew up at Incarnation. Sunday school, choirs, youth programming, internships and young adult groups have been a part of my Incarnation history. Now, my life takes a turn as an agricultural and youth-focused missionary in Africa. I moved to Kenya in March 2014 to serve for six months in a rural village on the coast. Without internet, running water, and often times without electricity, my normal has become something far from normal. I will return October 15 to the wide state of Texas to see where my next step will land. More dirt? Empowering young women? Sports, oh my! Actually, I haven’t slept. I’ve tried, but the cadence of the drum pulses in my blood. I peer up at the belt of the Milky Way, contemplating the drum-dada-drum-dadadrum. Rousing my body from the straw mat, I expect to see my Giriama guardians surrounding my dirt nest. I’m enclosed by a ring of empty chairs.

attend. That summer an orphan who needed True Love called me, without words, to decide on that Same Love. Transformation burns on the coals of discipline. The details from Mexico to this pin prick on the Kenyan coast deserve at least one lazy coffee date. However, the epistle of James articulates THE pruning catalyst growing me into this strange new person, the person I’m intended to be. His accusatory, “if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror” sparks a need for discipline (James 1:23).

THAT’S THE THING ABOUT TRANSFORMATION OF THE SPIRIT, IT HAPPENS ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Leaving my Kenyan sister curled on the straw, I must pursue the drum. My pursuit shuffleshuffle-shuffles to the beat, which seems to emanate from a scrubby fire. I slide into feeling the music with the figures obscuring the heat. Heads down, our movement originates in the core and reaches climax in the shoulders; it is the Giriama way. For some minutes we move in silence. Then, “Kache has joined us to chase away the cold!” My Kenyan brothers, my negligent sentries, laugh as we celebrate the blackness of now and the day yet to come.

Tomorrow we will transform from the smoky village folk with soil in our hair into a shining wedding party. For now, with my people under the stars, I don’t know if I have room for anymore Joy. How in the blazes did I get here? So far from coffee and cookies in the Great Hall. How did I become a woman that holds chickens as they are slaughtered and inspects tomato plants by the light of hand-held kerosene lamps? Transformation begins with a paper cut. It is a minute beginning, but I can’t help going back to the small irritant. My first cut came from an Incarnation youth trip to Monterrey, Mexico. Confusion came with seeing truly humble living for the first time. A greater wonder consumed me as I worshiped the same God in a culture I did not understand. A supreme sense of purpose set my feet as I exhausted my body with the labor. Transformation excites with a decision. The following summer Incarnation youth decided to minister in Jamaica. I decided to

The richness of Anglican roots offer an answer, the Daily Office. Looking into a mirror does not make me more or less African. This gazing does not incite a desire to sweat in the fields alongside my black sisters. Active discipline holds this transformative power. From the Daily Office, I commune with the Saints and spiritual giants while standing in a field of maize. I am Rebekah drawing water for Isaac’s camels as I fill the water drums in our kitchen.

During the Daily Office, I clothe in spiritual armor for the warfare of the day. I ready myself for evil combat from real spiritual opposition. I dress with the Acts of the martyrs and apostles. In the heat of the Daily Office, I am home. I am closest to eternal rest. He is and I am still. The worship of the Daily Office awards me freedom to be the woman, Eleanor Rice Mackintosh. It makes it easier to be that woman in every situation. In the prayer of my Daily Office I am alongside my supporters. In the structure of the Daily Office I see where my heart must rest today, and I see where my body can go: Israel, war, harvesting, the land of Milk and Honey. Sweeping sand upon sand, I now know when the sand is clean, a task that dumbfounded me upon arrival. That’s the thing about transformation of the spirit, it happens one day at a time. Without warning, the old self is forgotten and suddenly a more YOU you is standing in your shoes. ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

SAVE THE DATE JANUARY 11 Happy 10-year anniversary to the Uptown Service. Mark your calendars for a celebration.

The November food drive is an important ministry at this church. The donated food is combined with gifts from the Angel Tree adopt-a-family program and packaged for delivery to families in need. Please drop peanut butter, mac & cheese, and cereal in the baskets around the church. If you are interested in volunteering to help sort through the food on December 11 & 12, please contact Erin Pendleton at ependleton@incarnation.org. ADOPT A FAMILY

Choose an Angel envelope from the tree located in the Great Hall or the hall outside the Main Church. The Angel Tree adopt-afamily program is Incarnation’s long-standing outreach effort during Advent. We seek to see that our neighbors in need have a joyful Christmas. To assist with food basket and gift deliveries on December 13, please contact Erin at ependleton@incarnation.org. IMPACT A CHILD’S LIFE

We need 20 more Reading Buddies for three local elementary schools in the 75204 zip code. Come read with a student one hour a week and make an impact on their future success in school. For questions or to sign up, email Anne at amackintosh@incarnation.org.

SHOW THEM YOU CARE

The Young Life program at North Dallas High School provides opportunities to expose students to Christ’s mission and to bring them closer through a structured program that builds around community, relationships, and shared experiences. Wyld Life is similar to Young Life but is offered at Spence Middle School where volunteers meet twice a month to show young teens Christ’s great and abiding love for them. Volunteers needed to attend or lead meetings, serve meals, play games, and assist with fundraising activities. Show them you care. Contact the outreach department for more information outreach@incarnation.org. BECOME A MENTOR

Incarnation STARS Mentoring Program with Big Brothers Big Sisters is all about caring. It’s caring enough to commit just one hour a week to advise and help guide a vulnerable neighborhood student at North Dallas High School. Won’t you help? For questions, or to volunteer, contact Erin Pendleton at ependleton@incarnation.org. GET INVOLVED

If you’ve been served by Incarnation, whether it be through attending a Growth Group or Sunday school, attending parish-wide events, or any number of other ways—chances are you’ve been served by a faithful volunteer giving time and talent to serve you. And we’re always in need of more help. We want to help you connect where you are feeling called to serve. Please email info@incarnation.org or call the front desk at 214.521.5101 to explore the many opportunities available to you to get more involved at your church. HOST A DINNER

Each Monday night, the Beecherl Corrigan Fellows meet in a parishioner’s home for dinner and their seminar time. This is a great opportunity for parishioners to get to know the Fellows and our program, as well as the Fellows getting to know members of our church. If you are interested in hosting a casual dinner in your home, email Caroline Waller at fellows@incarnation.org.
