Did You Know? There is a wonderful treasure in the basement of Incarnation. It’s called the Marmion Library, and it is the home to over 15,000 books. A great variety of fiction and nonfiction, an outstanding religious collection, and 4,000 children’s books that are waiting for our young families to enjoy. The library and the bookstore began together in the late 1940’s with two cartons of donated books and salable items on a kitchen cart. In 1955, the Marmion Guild was formed to maintain a bookstore that would financially support itself and the library, and that has continued for 60 years. From its inception, the library has accepted many generous gifts that have enabled it to expand its collection, and donations, and memorials are still very welcome today. In the last ten years the library and the bookstore have been involved in establishing over 30 libraries in Belize schools. Guild members prepare and organize thousands of books each year for our Belize Mission team to put in place in the communities where mission efforts are focused. Our library also donates hundreds of books each year to the schools in our own neighborhood. Have you ever been in our library? You will find our entrance across the hall from the old book store. Pass by our popular swap shelf and down the stairs and get ready to be surprised by the warm inviting space that our patrons have come to love. Sundays 8:30 –12:30 pm

PROVIDING CLEAN WATER IN REFUGEE VILLAGES Well, we’re back and had a good trip, and the "spirit of God was hovering over us." Thanks be to God that we came back with all of our "fingers and toes," a greater appreciation for water, and of course, a greater love for the Lord and the beautiful people of Belize. BELIZE WASH TEAM 2016

We completely overhauled two hand pumps that were dangerously corroded and inoperable, and replaced all the parts except the casings. It was a great learning experience for us, and we further developed our relationship with Rural Water Development, which is the water authority in the areas where we work. We can’t possibly thank enough experts from Living Water International and Hope Springs for making this trip possible and successful. And thanks be to God for giving us the "spirit of mission" and the will to serve Him and the people of Belize.

WATER FOR REFUGEE VILLAGES

Additionally we were able to introduce Living Water International to the head of Rural Water Development, and they seemed amenable to working together in future water and hygiene projects. Thanks for your support and prayers. Steve Rodgers and the WASH team If you are interested in participating in the 2017 Mission Trip to Belize, please email outreach@incarnation.org. The information meeting is on October 16 at 4 pm in The Assembly (Room 205), and the trip in February will include construction projects, water pump repair, lending library installations, health & hygiene education, and continued development of the church we built.

Find the Bible hard to read? The Old Testament confusing? Welcome to Fall 2016 at Incarnation! We’re thrilled this fall to be focusing on the Old Testament through a program we’re calling “Walk Through the Old Testament: Where the Journey of Grace Begins.” We’ve selected ten stories with engaging characters, interesting (and entertaining!) plots, and valuable lessons for each of us no matter what our biblical literacy or where we are in our relationship with God. I hope you’ll join us each week through a variety of opportunities (see below) as we take some time to learn and grow. So what exactly should we expect this fall? And why are we doing all this?

WHAT TO EXPECT

• We’ll be focusing on 10 powerful and entertaining stories from the Old Testament each week beginning Sunday, September 11. At all Sunday services through November 13, our preaching will focus on making these stories come alive. • All kids and students will be learning about the same lesson each week in Sunday School. • Each story will be represented on a timeline posted throughout our campus to help us understand the larger narrative. • Each Friday before the Sunday, the two preachers for the following Sunday will release a video discussion for their upcoming messages. • Each Tuesday after the Sunday, Kevin Dodge will be posting a follow up explaining how the Old Testament story explicitly teaches us something about Jesus. • A Sunday School class called The Greatest Story Ever Told and a weekday Bible Study for women on Wednesday mornings is available for further study of these lessons.

WHY THIS MATTERS

• Understanding how all the stories fit together of the Scriptures: Each week, we’ll be tying these stories into the larger scriptural narrative to help each of us understand how God’s saving work has played out in different ways through the ages. • Increased knowledge of the Old Testament: This one goes without saying! We hope by studying the Old Testament we will know its stories better.

JOIN US THIS FALL AS THE OLD TESTAMENT COMES TO LIFE.

look for details surrounding an event later in november.

• Increased confidence in engaging with the Bible: When our parish took the 3D Faith survey in fall of 2014, one of the key growth opportunities identified for us as a community was biblical literacy. We hope by spending so much time in the Old Testament this fall many of us will find our overall confidence increased as we engage with the scriptures both individually and as a parish. Again, more than anything else, this fall will help each of us grow in our relationship with God. I hope you’ll make plans for you and your family to take part in this special opportunity! blog will reach young parents with children who have Down syndrome and reassure them their children will live productive and happy lives. This was one of the ways I learned to be an advocate for myself.

It may have taken a while, but with the help of my friends and family, I’ve come to realize that "I am special in God’s way — He loves me just the way I am."

By Annemarie Carrigan Parishioner, Servant, Intern

Incarnation has been my family’s church for as long as I can remember. Even at an early age, it felt like home. As a kid, I spent my summers at church attending Vacation Bible School and Summer Splash. I’ve always gone to Sunday school and youth group, and when I became old enough I started going on mission trips. I discovered my love for serving the poor in our neighborhood through ministries like Austin Street Center and Angel Tree. My experiences at Incarnation have really shaped me into a person of faith. It may have taken a while, but with the help of my friends and family, I’ve come to realize that "I am special in God’s way —He loves me just the way I am." This church keeps me grounded in God’s spirit. The sermons, especially Father Joe’s, inspire me to be bold and carry the name of God out into the world. A couple of summers ago, I went with the youth group to Guatemala to build homes and stoves for families. There, I met a girl named Leslie. We share the same disability. It didn’t matter though, we were able to dance, laugh, and entertain the other kids around. We had fun together. About this time, I also began to write. I thought about girls like Leslie and me. Our personalities are different from others because we have Down syndrome. Sometimes it is difficult to verbalize our feelings. I decided to blog about my experiences to help other people have a better understanding of life from the perspective of a person with Down syndrome. I hope this

Recently, I learned of my spiritual gifts: Mercy, Helps, and Shepherding. They all make good sense — I’ve always had a passion for serving the poor. This fall when I return to the University of Central Missouri, I will have a little bit better understanding of how I can share my gifts as a future journalist: I want to travel the world and tell the stories of the poorest people. I want to tell them they are special and God loves them. I want to carry the name of God out into the world.

YOUR PLACE

Volunteering is most often a choice; serving is a calling. As a Christ-follower, we are called to serve. Servanthood has to do with your heart toward God and your attitude toward ministry. It determines the purity and sincerity of your service. Spiritual gifts are special abilities distributed by the Holy Spirit to every believer for the common good of the body of Christ and for each believer’s ministry in the world on behalf of Christ. Scripture tells us that we are called to undertake the responsibility of the gifts that are bestowed on us to fulfill the mission of the Church. When you begin to serve faithfully according to God’s specific gifts in your life, you will be maximizing your impact for the Gospel and drawing closer to God. If you were unable to take the Spiritual Gifts Assessment with the parish earlier this summer, please email Kristin at kjohnson@incarnation.org so she can get you set up to take it and help get you get connected to serve in just the right place.

A W ord from Your Senior Warden Q & A WITH DAVID PARSONS

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAITH BACKGROUND. My late mother was a faithful member of the Church of England (and several times Senior Warden of our small church) and my father is a thoughtful atheist. They raised me to be open-minded and inquisitive about faith. When I was 7 years old, I started going to church with my mother and never really strayed, despite flirting with Roman Catholicism in my teens and Southern Baptist and Bible churches when I came to Texas. HOW DID YOU END UP AT INCARNATION? I was going through a really rough patch in 2005, during the breakup of my first marriage. I’d never really settled on a church home here, and had started to drift from the faith. I found myself — late one Saturday night — a little drunk and sore in need of Jesus. I googled local churches and found Incarnation’s (then brand-new) Uptown Contemporary service, which appealed to me because I wouldn’t need to put on a coat and tie. I came to check it out and never left. HOW HAS CHURCH OF THE INCARNATION AND ITS PEOPLE HELPED ON YOUR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY? I found a warm welcome here that showed me the love of Christ when I needed it most. The people of Incarnation welcomed a poor, broken wretch with open arms, helped me to heal, and then put me to work. I found my church home, and met the light of my life, Lindsay, through church friends. We married in Memorial Chapel and raise our daughter, Sarah, here. Incarnation encourages seriousness about the intellectual underpinnings of our faith, Biblical literacy, and discipleship. This focus provides a strong foundation for spiritual growth that has helped my faith thrive. HOW HAVE YOU USED YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS THROUGH SERVICE HERE? Thanks to Incarnation, I now know my spiritual gifts to be Leadership, Administration and Hospitality. Over the years, each has been put to good use: I have volunteered at Sunday services and have helped coordinate contemporary service volunteers. This is my second term on the Vestry and I have served on a number of other committees. Two of the most

rewarding roles have been leading a Growth Group and assisting in the Welcome Ministry. I love that this is a church where there is ample room for everyone to pitch in. My late mother taught me never to be afraid to roll up my sleeves and do whatever was needed, and that is a spirit I hope I have honored. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE VESTRY? Aside from the formal responsibilities, this is a tricky question. When I served on the Vestry of a tiny church in England, we were effectively the parish staff. Here, with a half-dozen clergy and a staff of over 40, our role is very different, and I see two main parts. First, as a group with a wide array of skills, we can provide advice and input as an advisory board. Second, as visible members of the Church, we can work hard to welcome new guests and connect people who want to join our community. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH DURING YOUR TERM AS SENIOR WARDEN? I have three priorities: 1) As a Senior Warden coming from our Uptown Contemporary services, I want to work to make sure we all view Incarnation as one church, moving in the same direction, with different flavors of worship that have, at the core, the same dynamic and vital liturgical tradition; 2) I want to build on the great work of those who came before me and help us utilize our new buildings to nurture and minister to our growing membership; 3) I want to help us to be serious about discipleship and service, and foster a culture where an empowered laity embraces every role available. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE GREATEST OPPORTUNITY FOR THE LOCAL CHURCH? We’ve seen a lot of turmoil in this City, with unrest, disagreement and tragedy touching us all. At times like this, people crave Christian community more than any other time. We have a vital role to play in healing the fractures in our society, and an opportunity to provide a welcoming sanctuary for people adrift and in need of Christ’s love in their lives. I will do all I can to make this place a beacon of Christ’s Gospel truth, and help people realize that within these walls can be found a loving community and a peace which the world cannot offer. TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT

STEWARDSHIP By Meg Houk Director of Children & Family Ministry

There is an extraordinary emphasis on commercialism and materialism in our fast-paced society. Current estimates are that every day children receive on average 3,000 advertising messages, including those imbedded into movies and television. By the time they are 21, they will have received 23 million advertising messages. For the most part, these messages teach young people that they are not good enough unless they wear the right clothes, drink the right soda, or carry the right cell phone. Technology, material possessions, and lifestyles that would have once been considered luxuries and “wants” are now perceived as “needs.” The secular world is excellent at teaching young people that everything is a “need.” Children need to hear a different message from their church and from their family. They need to hear that God has already given them many special gifts. They need to hear that Jesus loves them just as they are. They are

blessed right now. In fact, they are so blessed they even have some to share with the rest of the world. Emily Johnson, 19, grew up attending Incarnation’s Uptown Contemporary Service with her family. Each Sunday, her father would give Emily and her brothers a dollar bill to place in the offering plate. “I grew up witnessing my parents give to the church. It was exciting to participate with them.” Though the Johnsons were faithful attenders of church, Emily didn’t begin to deepen her relationship with Christ until the arrival of Pam Coghlan, the student ministries director. “Pam brought the kids of the youth group together. She taught us how to find Christ in our daily lives; to pray for the people who annoy us, and to think about why God has placed people in our lives. We bonded as a group and wanted to come to church instead of coming just because we had to.”

The timing was key as Emily would be headed off to college within a few years — a time when having a good spiritual foundation matters a great deal.

Emily goes to church, she makes sure she has money so she can continue to give.

“When I think about my future, I want God to continue to point me in the direction He wants me to go instead of While attending University of Oklahoma, Emily found a concentrating so hard on what I think will make me happy. During the semester, we will explore three major topics: the basic teachings and beliefs of the Christian Church; the Sacraments and worship life of the Church, with particular attention to the Anglican/ Episcopal tradition and our history; and the life of prayer that God intends and desires for every Christian and the tools and teaching given by the Church to assist us in knowing the Lord in this way.

Growth Groups start back up the week of September 18. God calls His people together as one body. In the body, we grow, are nurtured, and reach out to others. The church does this in many ways, but one really vital way that Incarnation does it is through Growth Groups. These groups allow us to meet each other in a closer setting with the purpose of truly getting to know one another, growing together in faith, and standing with one another in life. Every other week, parishioners get together for food, fellowship, prayer, and spiritually focused study that is designed to help you grow more mature in your faith and relationship with God. Stay tuned for details about how to join or start a group for the fall. Email squillan@incarnation.org to join or start a group. INCLINGS
