Growing Ordinary in the

8

ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

By The Reverend John Sundara Curate for Adult Formation

This Spring, our liturgical colors will change from white to green as our liturgical seasons turn from one to the next. White—the color of Eastertide celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, to Green—the color of Ordinary time. In many ways, this sounds like a liturgical letdown. From Eastertide and the joys of the Resurrection, to Ordinary time? Nonetheless, would we not expect the season after Eastertide to be something just as glorious and inspiring? Who even picked the most mundane and boring of names “Ordinary time”? “Ordinary” does not instill excitement in the Church. “Ordinary” does not lend itself to a vision of an enthusiastic and exuberant faith. But yet, here it is, etched into the life and season of the Church year. Why? Hopefully, this story sheds some light. Right after Daniel was born, our entire family, grandparents and all, were incredibly excited about the birth of this little boy. There was much celebration as many a selfie was posted to Facebook and shared across the world with family far and wide. Once that excitement settled however, came the real, day-to-day, mundane tasks of nurturing and raising Daniel. 2 am feedings and diaper explosions. Catching up with laundry. Once, our most exciting event was a half-hour trip to our neighborhood café, after an hour-long visit to our family doctor. None of our friends envied us. But truth be told, none of our friends were envied by us either. Here was a little boy whom we loved and cherished; and we happily dove into the mundane to nurture and raise him. And diving wholeheartedly into the mundane changed us and made us better parents and individuals. And we have a little toddler of whom we are so proud. Ordinary time in the Church is mundane. Ordinary time is when we, the Church, dive into the mundane and embrace it so that we can grow in love for God and love for the people around us. Ordinary time is when we can become better disciples. And to add another layer of connection to the analogy, Ordinary Time immediately follows the Day of Pentecost, the birth of the Church, when the resurrected Jesus ascends back into heaven and sends his Holy Spirit down on his disciples. In other words, all the more reason to truly embrace this season of the Church year as an opportunity to grow! This also explains why Green is the color for Ordinary Time. The Psalmist says that the righteous person,“is like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” (Psalm 1:3).

Green is the color of a fruitful tree with roots deep into a stream, whose leaves do not dry up. But all trees begin as small saplings that can be held in the palm of a child. It’s only through the gradual and ordinary growth of being nurtured by the living water of Christ, does our saplings of faith grow into a majestic oak that provides shelter for the birds of the air, fruit for the hungry, and shade for the weary. Ordinary Time is called ordinary, in part not only because it is time to embrace the mundane, but time for our faith to grow into fruitfulness from small sapling to majestic oak. At Incarnation this year, during this Ordinary Time, we have opportunities for you to dive into and grow as faithful and fruitful members of the Church. We wanted to highlight these for you. the

Gathering

By Sara Snowden Assistant Director of Development Operations

A young man once asked his priest ‘what is my purpose?’ The priest responded ‘it’s simple: to be blessed by God and to bless others.’ The Sermon on the Mount presents Jesus’ vision of life: God yearns to bless us, lead us into surpassing joy and righteousness, and use us to bless others. As we grow in our understanding of God’s love for us, we are to live out our Christian life, serve as leaders, so that others may know and experience blessing in Christ. We grow in our faith because we continually develop compassion for others. There are many outreach programs at our church and plenty of people in need right outside of our doorstep. One, not well known to many at Incarnation, is a church without walls ministering to the people on the streets, called The Gathering. The Gathering is an outdoor church, endorsed by the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas, which meets every Sunday Afternoon in Thanksgiving Square, and reaches out to people at their point of need to share the message of Jesus Christ. The Gathering has their own volunteers, many of whom are down and out folk touched by the love of Christ, who lead with music and prayers. Additionally, parishes across the metroplex send a priest to celebrate the Eucharist, and a team of volunteers to serve lunch each week to their 150 members. It is very much like the Church in the New Testament, where the liturgical meal of Communion, was followed by the community agape feast.

Tom Hauser, a retired Catholic priest and Executive Director of The Gathering, spoke with Growth Group leaders recently about this ministry of hope, purpose, and strength for the homeless community that is always among us but seldom seen. One of the Growth Groups was inspired and felt called to serve one Sunday. “I was struck by what was said by Tom at the beginning of the worship service: We are all unique people; we come for different reasons, and we all have different issues. But we come together as a church because we love one another,” Mark LaRoe, one of the Growth Group members said. “It struck me to think deeper into what it means to be 'poor in spirit'— and that we all have needs that can only be fulfilled by God. These folks are hungry for God’s love and attention. I was deeply honored to receive communion and blessed to share a meal with them.” Incarnation is a church in the city. We do not exist merely for ourselves but the sake of others. We are called to live out the Christian life in our everyday relationships and to serve so others may know the same blessings we experience in Christ. And we are seeing our Growth Groups take a step in being a blessing to others.

There is a need for more groups to participate in this weekly fellowship and serve lunch to the homeless. If your group is interested, contact Fr. Sundara at jsundara@incarnation.org. ANGELUS INCARNATION.ORG

ANCIENT FAITH. RADICAL VOCATION. By The Reverend Jeremy W. Bergstrom Canon for Vocations, The Episcopal Diocese of Dallas

“Have you ever considered the priesthood?” It’s a striking question, one not normally considered by most people. But perhaps more of us should! After all, priests don’t hatch out of eggs or grow by the riverbank in some exotic jungle. They come from the same pews you sit in every Sunday, from the same Sunday School classrooms you and your children enjoy, from the same home groups and Bible studies that help you grow in your faith, hope, and love. One of your parish’s four mission points is to “Raise up Christian leaders for the renewal of the Church,” and few do it as well as the Church of the Incarnation. Some parishes will go generations before they generate even one vocation, if ever. But I’m willing to guess most of you have known at least one or two young people at Incarnation who have gone on to be priests. You can brag, “I knew them when!” Fostering vocations is a rare and precious thing, and the current work going on at Incarnation is a testament to not only your rector’s exceptional leadership, but to your entire congregation’s remarkable vocation in today’s church. It’s been a long time since we’ve needed quality clergy so badly, and quite frankly, they only come from congregations committed to praying and investing in the future of the church. Part of the challenge we face is recruiting quality candidates for the priesthood. We’ve found some good ones, but we need far more! Another hurdle confronting us has to do with having a vision for what exactly the riches of the Anglican tradition are, and how they’re best employed in compelling, successful Gospel ministry in the 21st Century. Our church is in significant need of a sustained discussion along these lines. Our future depends on it. This fall we’ll be presented with a remarkable, truly one-of-akind opportunity to have such a conversation, and to recruit future priests. For a couple years, a group of like-minded bishops and clergy (including your own) have been dreaming about a major conference to attract and recruit new talent, and we’re pleased to announce that this conference will be held this fall at Incarnation, from September 20–22.

Bishops and seminaries from across North America will be present, and I believe it’s safe to say that never again in our lifetime will a conference of this sort be able to attract such an impressive list of keynote speakers: The Most Reverend Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury; Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon, General Secretary of the Anglican Communion; Bishop N. T. Wright of the University of St. Andrew’s, Scotland; Professor Stanley Hauerwas of Duke University; Professor Oliver O’Donovan, University of Edinburgh; Professor Ephraim Radner, Wycliffe College; and an all-star cast of younger scholars and clergy will be presenting to represent the next generation of leadership in the church. We believe the name of the conference goes a long way towards describing its character and mission: Ancient Order, Radical Vocation: The Anglican Priesthood as 21st Century Call. We’re calling it ‘RADVO’ for short. This incredible lineup will go a long way towards ensuring a successful conference; but again, success only truly comes about when the faithful pray and support the mission of the church. Do you hope for a revitalized Episcopal Church? Do you long to see the riches of the Anglican tradition passed on to subsequent generations, that our children and grandchildren will be able to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the beauty and profundity you regularly enjoy? Pray for RADVO, and ask how you might support the conference in practical ways as well. For more information about the vision and content of the conference, please email me at jbergstrom@edod.org. And finally, do you know any young (or young-ish!) people who might have a call to ministry? You might encourage them to consider attending. Or maybe you need to register to come and discern for yourself ! Our website is the best place to find further information on content and how to register: radvoco.org. God-willing, our Lord will use this conference to bring glory to himself, and it will be of real benefit to the church in the time of great need. As we head into Pentecost my prayer is that he will fill your hearts with a love of his church, and that he will continue to give you wisdom and discernment as you continue to embrace your own vocation in the life of his body, whatever that may be.

Let the Children Sing By Scott Dettra Director of Music & Organist

This fall, the Music Department will launch an exciting new program for children: The Incarnation Choir School. Modeled on English choir schools such as those at Westminster Abbey and King's College, Cambridge, the Incarnation Choir School is an after-school program that will provide professional music training for children in grade 2 and above. The choir school is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music and there will be no tuition costs or expenses for parents. The tradition of having children sing the treble line in choral music goes back centuries. For most of that time such choirs were open only to boys, but in the last several decades girls have been included in equal measure. Our choir school will welcome both boys and girls, who will sing together. Children who become choristers benefit in many ways. In addition to training in voice, music theory, and choral technique, choristers develop important leadership and intellectual skills, self-confidence and motivation, and time management skills. Additionally, numerous recent published studies have shown that children who engage in musical activity can benefit from improved IQ, spatial-temporal awareness and language development. Generally, choristers are academic over-achievers. Through their experience as leaders of worship and the singing of the Anglican choral repertoire, choristers undergo deep spiritual formation, developing roots that last a lifetime. Bishop Burton himself grew up as a chorister in the Ottawa Cathedral Choir and recently spoke about his time as a chorister. "My experience as a boy chorister completely changed my life. It gave me a sense of belonging, a sense of the mystery and awesome presence of God. I learned a lot of Scripture by heart as a chorister since so many texts we sang were scriptural. It made church a happy and interesting place to be, and it gave me a love of music which has been a tremendous blessing ever since."

Choristers are normal children who do an extraordinary job. Musical standards will be high, encouraging the choristers to reach their full potential as young musicians, and helping them to develop a sense of professionalism and pride in their work. Teamwork is an important part of any successful chorister program, and our choristers will be taught the value of working together to achieve more than they thought possible on their own. No prior musical training is required for admission as a chorister, just age-appropriate reading proficiency, the ability to match pitch, and an eagerness to learn. The program will be open to all children, regardless of religious affiliation or parish membership. Rehearsals will be offered twice each week on weekday afternoons, although choristers are only required to attend one rehearsal each week. They will sing at the 9 am traditional services, and occasionally at Choral Evensong. The program will be led by myself and Graham Schultz, our Associate Director of Music. Between us, we have more than 35 years experience working in similar chorister programs in various parishes and cathedrals around the country. With two directors working together, we will be able to provide choristers with a great deal of individualized training, helping them to succeed in a challenging yet fun environment. Although the most obvious result of the choir school will be having choristers sing in church, the main goal of the program is to be a ministry to the children who participate, impacting their lives in positive and lasting ways, setting them up for a lifetime of success whatever career they choose. It is an extraordinary opportunity for growth and development for those who make the commitment. Interested families should contact me directly at sdettra@incarnation.org for more information, or to schedule an appointment to discuss the Incarnation Choir School in more detail.

disciple now recap On a cold spring weekend, over 70 students gathered in 8 host homes for Disciple Now Weekend Retreat, traditionally known as just “DNOW." At DNOW, students are divided into small groups, camp out in the family room, spend the night, learn about God, worship, eat, play games, and hang out. Sometimes this retreat is underestimated because of its simplicity. Because our students go to 32 different schools, they don’t have the opportunity to spend time with each other on a regular basis. When they get an opportunity like DNOW, they jump on it. They love spending time together talking and playing games. These simple moments lay the foundation for building relationships not only with each other but with the Lord. This year's theme was "Community." “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” ( John 13:35) Jesus’ words leave no wiggle room; people should recognize us because of our love for one another—because of our unity. On a typical Sunday, our students are spread out over the church’s traditional and contemporary services. It is a rare occasion to see them gathered in one place. But if you found yourself in the 11:15 am Uptown Contemporary Service on April 8, you saw a mass of students wearing t-shirts with the word “Community" lining the pews. You may have also felt the energy of the students coming together after another abundantly blessed weekend and knew you were witnessing something special.

belize mission trip recap Twenty-nine missioners traveled to Belize in January where they committed to serving the people in the southwestern region of the country—an area where Incarnation has been working for more than 10 years. The missioners refurbished a health clinic in the community of Selena and taught health & hygiene education as well as music and Christian education at Iguana Creek Government School and the RC School at Arenal, a remote village on the Guatemalan border. The mission team also installed a 3,000book lending library at the RC School and built and installed play yard equipment and picnic tables at both of the schools. Missioners did light construction at Annunciation and Santa Cruz churches and completed water hand pump replacement in San Antonio and Cristo Rey Villages, providing a source for clean drinking water for the villagers. We have a job to do here on earth. With love, patience, and respect, we are to speak up for what we believe and for who we are in Christ. We are to pray for discernment and eyes to see whatever God might be asking of us—to seek God and listen carefully as we choose the things we will be involved in “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45). How are you spending your time serving others? Consider attending one of the seven foreign mission trips Incarnation offers each year. You’ll be glad you did.
