I look out over the breadth of this new year, and immediately begin to make a mental inventory of goals and aspirations to achieve... a glorious new painting on the blank canvas of 2013. Just as I did at the beginning of 2012. But, while goals are certainly important, we must also evaluate past obstacles that may have prohibited success. So how did you do last year? Did you achieve your goals? Have you reflected back upon your work of art, that is 2012? I’m in the process, and must admit it can be challenging! Are you like me? I find that while I tend to be a bit analytical as a person, I must sometimes make a concerted effort to analyze my own past successes and obstacles that kept me from success. As I grow older, I find my ability to rationalize in the moment, when busy or tired, can truly be a thing to behold. And not in a good way: “I can do it later...”, “It wasn’t really that important....” For me, procrastination can be an obstacle to success. Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth... Proverbs 27:1 It all boils down to what I would call living with purpose. Scripture admonishes us to pursue this — from the Apostle Paul challenging us not to become entangled in civilian pursuits in 2 Tim. 2:4, to making use of our time, for the days are evil, in Eph. 5:16 — and of course nearly the entire book of Proverbs — it is clear that we are to live intentionally. My 2012? While I had a number of wins, I definitely had some losses. But that’s not the point — the continued, renewed effort is. It’s a new year — a blank canvas. Let’s remove past obstacles and renew our intentions of excellence, and strive for the prize, making this the best year yet! I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Phil. 3:14

ANGEL TREE Two Perspectives of One of Incarnation’s Grand Holiday Traditions!

FROM OUTREACH

This year, embedded within the steeped traditions of Incarnation’s Angel Tree, some new twists were had! We adopted well over 100+ families, recommended by neighborhood DISD school counselors, and provided them with Christmas gifts and food baskets. We also adopted families from AIDS Services of Dallas and Reconciliation Outreach. For the second year running, we adopted children who had quite recently come under the custody of Child Protective Services (CPS). Our parishioners were so enthusiastic in adoptions that we went back to CPS and requested more children! In the end, we also insured that 100+ CPS children had proper gifts for Christmas and our parish shared Christ’s love with over 500 individuals this Christmas—what a joy and a privilege for each and every one of us! Our goal is not necessarily to see that homes are filled with “stuff ” but to share Christ’s love with our brothers and sisters in our neighborhood. Speaking of new twists, we also found a way to create a connection between our Angel Tree program and our Stars INC mentoring program at North Dallas High School (NDHS). As a group, our volunteer mentors and their student mentees adopted two CPS children to shower with Christmas presents. The emphasis was on warm, cuddly and soothing gifts. Also this year our NDHS Young Life Club members helped spread Christmas cheer by joining us on delivery day to wrap gifts and help with deliveries. The sorting, packing and delivering of

the food baskets and Christmas gifts is a science in itself. It took literally an army of volunteers to pull this off in an organized fashion. But this kind of project is something that our parish does so well. We had four magnificent volunteer champions to plan, organize and shepherd this effort. Our deepest gratitude goes to Barbara Dickason, Jana Dransfield, Dianne LaRoe and Mickey Ward. Not only did they work very hard, but they claim to have enjoyed every minute of it. Now that’s a Christmas miracle! 4 Champions + 40 Sorting & Packing Volunteers + 60 Delivery Volunteers + 25 Chaperones + 56 Students = 100+ Families Adopted for Christmas! 100+ CPS Children Given Gifts! 500+ Individuals Shown Christ’s Love! Get ready for our next big parish wide outreach ministry event – our ANNUAL DAY OF SERVICE! Mark your calendar for SATURDAY, APRIL 27—we will need all hands on deck for this work day in our parish neighborhood.

FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL MINISTRY

need is one of the Church of the Incarnation’s greatest qualities. The Angel Tree Project is one example of this facet of our spiritual life. As we celebrate the birth of Christ, our church body joins in offering our time and resources to bless the “least of these” through the Angel Tree. Middle School Ministry commissioned its students to take part in this timeless tradition and reach out to those in need: On December 2, 56 students and 25 chaperones shopped, wrapped and delivered gifts for Angel Tree families. The experience was marvelous and truly touched the lives of the students. “I love shopping for my angel,” said Caroline Bibb, a seventh grade girl. “It makes me so thankful for what I have.” In Genesis, we are told that we are made in the image of God. I believe that when students are asked to give of themselves, they embody part of that image. I think that God uses the Angel Tree Project to call us out of our normal routine and to cause us to reflect on who we are and to whom we belong. Yes! He asks us to give, but I find we end up getting so much more in return. Let us see where God is at work and join in the mission!

cobras, hobbits & high schoolers

ou will not be the same...

Is there point to this story? Yes, but please, be patient. There’s no rush. I was mesmerized. I was engaged. I was taken captive. There, in front of my eyes, coming through loud and clear on our 1974 color TV set was an older man donning a tall, coiled hat with flute in hand. In front of this man, a colorful jar, lid removed and off to the side. Slithering out of the jar, in a confident position, stood the cobra. There I was, standing in front of the television, mesmerized. Just as the snake was seemingly hypnotized by the audible notes and slight movement of the flute, so was I. Have you ever been captivated by something like this? Just recently, something else slithered out from a pot, but it wasn’t a snake, it was a book. Remember, be patient, there’s no rush. It’s all part of the story. The words in the next few paragraphs, springing forth, are about a book and about a certain kind of people. First, the book: I was mesmerized by it—and difficult not to think about throughout the day—my mind was consumed with the story. This was a book I recall seeing my peers reading even when I was in 6th grade. I never read it then, as I am quite sure I was busy watching reruns of Gilligan’s Island and I Dream of Jeannie. Another assumption is that 95% of those reading this story have already read this

6

THE ANGELUS | JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2013

book. Although my own children read it when they were in the 7th grade, they enthusiastically used this golden opportunity to encourage me as I read it, including such well-mannered comments as, “Dad, it’s good that you are reading more now, since you only read 1 or 2 books from 6th-12th grade...” “You can do it Dad.” “Stay focused.” “How is your progress?” But, even in their tender ridicule, they knew I was engrossed on this reading journey. The book? J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. You will not be the same... Realizing that the theatrical release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey would soon be in theaters, I made it a literary and cinematic goal to read it before viewing it. So I did. It was soul filling. Watching the movie trailer left a non-goblin-like impression on my heart, causing me to fulfill this quest. Read these theatrical trailer exerpts:

“You’ll have a tale or two to tell when you come back...Can you promise that I will come back? ...No… and if you do, you will not be the same.” -Theatrical Trailer

“Where are you off to? I’m going on an adventure! ... I’m looking for someone to share in an adventure.” -Theatrical Trailer

I keep having these words repeat within my mind. These words move me emotionally—they give me the shivers. I don’t know about you, but I want to be a part of this adventure. I want to go

too. Don’t you like to go on adventures? In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy went on a unique journey. It wasn’t necessarily a journey of her choosing. She sort of got swept up into it (sorry about that, to difficult to resist). But Bilbo Baggins (the hobbit character) made the choice to be on this adventure. But as you may have read, he didn’t jump at the chance to immediately “volunteer” — Gandalf says, “I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone.” and Baggins replies, “We are plain quiet folk and I have no use for adventures.” The Hobbit, page 13 But still, he went. He went on the adventure. He wrestled with whether or not to go on the journey, but he did. I admire this decision. I can remember taking some wonderful adventures and unforgettable journeys. One such adventure was travelling by plane, alone, as a young man, albeit Hughes Airwest, from Phoenix to California. It felt like I was on a weeklong safari, no cobras spotted. Another adventure? Moving to Dallas with only a Ford Mustang and a 4x6 U-haul trailer. I was never more afraid, but never more excited. A journey with music, tears, laughter, and no A/C. Do you still go on adventures? When was the last one you went on? You will not be the same...

BEHIND THE BEAUTIFUL FOREVERS

Fr. Greg

From Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo, a landmark work of narrative nonfiction that tells the dramatic and sometimes heartbreaking story of families striving toward a better life in one of the twenty-first century’s great, unequal cities.

In this brilliantly written, fast-paced book, based on three years of uncompromising reporting, a bewildering age of global change and inequality is made human. Annawadi is a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport, and as India starts to prosper, Annawadians are electric with hope. Abdul, a reflective and enterprising Muslim teenager, sees “a fortune beyond counting” in the recyclable garbage that richer people throw away. Asha, a woman of formidable wit and deep scars from a childhood in rural poverty, has identified an alternate route to the middle class: political corruption. Even the poorest Annawadians, like Kalu, a fifteen-year-old scrap-metal thief, believe themselves inching closer to the good lives and good times they call “the full enjoy.” But tragedy rocks the city and the tenderest individual hopes intersect with the greatest global truths, and the true contours of a competitive age are revealed.

A 2-Week “Let’s Deal With It!” Seminar for Parents Led by Marilyn Morris of Aim for Success & Brian Mountjoy, Incarnation High School/College Minister

With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects human beings to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers carries the reader headlong into one of the twenty-first century’s hidden worlds, and into the lives of people impossible to forget.

CONSTANTINE’S SWORD

Fr. Harry

Novelist, cultural critic, and former priest James Carroll marries history with memoir as he maps the two-thousand-year course of the Church’s battle against Judaism and faces the crisis of faith it has sparked in his own life.

“Fascinating, brave, and sometimes infuriating” (Time), this dark history is more than a chronicle of religion. It is the central tragedy of Western civilization, its fault lines reaching deep into our culture to create “a deeply felt work” (San Francisco Chronicle) as Carroll wrangles with centuries of strife and tragedy to reach a courageous and affecting reckoning with difficult truths.

DATE: February 3 & 10 Time: 10:20-11:05am Location: Memorial Chapel Special Note: This seminar will deal with issues pertinent to any parent with children in the 4th through 12th grade, although the information presented will be beneficial and valuable for any parent or grandparent! SKY RANCH Through The Eyes Of An 8Th Grade Boy By Noah Hill

L

ast October, more than 50 middleschool kids hopped into a bus for a wild and crazy ride, with people laughing and shouting, all pumped up for the Middle School Fall Retreat at Sky Ranch. When we finally arrived, volunteers were waiting for us, including a couple of special college interns we had met from the previous summer. After all of the greetings, we headed to our cabins where we promptly found our pizza dinner and devoured it in minutes. And, when the feast was over, we all headed in for a night of worship.

Everyone was thinking about God and felt his presence! I think that God is a whole lot more than a “belief ”. He is always there, whether you believe in Him or not. If you look back at the world, good has always, and still will, triumph over evil. God needs the respect He deserves. He created the heavens and the earth, yet He chose to die on the cross for us to forgive our sins. God’s humility, compassion, and love for mankind is evident through this one single act.

1 Samuel 3:10-11 “10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’ 11And the LORD said You could feel to Samuel: ‘See, God in that I am about to do something in Israel room. Everyone that will make the was thinking ears of everyone about God and who hears about it tingle.’” felt his presence!

Sky Ranch had many more activities than I expected. One of them was paintball, and some of us set off to the arena on Saturday. While we played, my goggles fogged up, and I could hardly see a thing. After only a couple people were left, I ran up to a platform and began strafing bullets at one side, only to discover that I had been shooting the wrong side! The weekend was fun—one thing I really liked was how the kids from Incarnation included everyone so that no one was left out. I think the kids in our youth group are pretty awesome in general. Saturday evening, Pam organized elaborate prayer stations, where we would read passages from Scripture, think on them, and do what the activity says. You could feel God in that room.

Then I thought about the lives of our high school students. This is the second thing, “a certain kind of people.” They are on a journey—so similar, but then completely different. Going off to college. Starting at a new high school. An unknown future. Not knowing who their friends will be. Uncertainty. Mystery. They are willing to say things. Do things. Respond and react. They ask questions. The high school person has already stepped out into territories that have been too scary, for others, in which to jump. They challenge your thinking. They can detect a faker, a poser, a “tool.” (Take a look at a few pictures of those who are in the middle of this journey right now.) In all of this, myself and the other adult leaders have the opportunity to be a part of this incredible journey. We get to see so many oneContinued page 19

DO YOU LIKE TO SING?

The Incarnation choirs are looking for new members! The Parish Choir sings at the 9am traditional service (and occasionally at Choral Evensong) and is open to anyone who can match pitch and read music. The Chancel Choir sings at both the 11:15am traditional service and Choral Evensong, and is open to more advanced singers by audition. Both choirs rehearse on Wednesday evenings. Membership in the choir is a fun and exciting way to use your musical gifts to glorify God and serve the parish! For more information, please contact Scott Dettra, Director of Music, at sdettra@incarnation.org or (214) 217-5652. THE ANGELUS | JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2013

of-a-kind adventures all the time right before our eyes! Dragon-slaying! Imaginable feats of strength! Pure wonderment! You will not be the same... Don’t forget your adventurous heart that is beating louder and louder to wake up your mind. It is not my desire for you to revert to dressing up like a high schooler or get a case of the “Good ‘Ol Day” syndrome—rather, I am challenging you to live. Live the way He intended you to live. Live it up, not just lie down. I am not advocating to be reckless or thoughtless, I am challenging you to surrender, let go, have faith, be the adventurer He wants you to be, rather than just sit around saying, “I’ll do it later.” “ I’ll be outside in a bit. Let me finish some stuff first.” What are you waiting for? When I was an adventurous child, I

always sensed I had a wall of deep security provided for me from my Dad. I felt that my own Dad would instantly come to my side at any moment whenever I would yell his name, regardless if he was at work 20 miles away or if he was just on the other side of the fence. I have a Father now who will do the same. Be mesmerized by Him. Go on an adventure. And you will not be the same.
