Dear Readers Welcome to the July issue of In and Around Iver This morning, as I write this intro, there’s a mixture of sadness and excitement as I look at the mounting bags and clutter amassing in the hallway. No, I’m not moving again, although looking at it, you could certainly think someone was moving out. Today is the day that Sammy and baby Summer go off on their little week away to enjoy some sunshine and visit the seaside. I’m so excited for them, as the break is much needed and weather wise they couldn’t have a better week ahead. The usual thoughts are entering my head, will they get there okay? will she have remembered to pack everything? I’ll have a good tidy up when they’ve gone and things will actually stay tidy for a whole week. Oh yes, all is good! And then, before they’ve even left the house, empty next syndrome sets in. A whole week with no one at home to talk to while I’m working, no one to nag for making a mess, no little baby Summer bouncing in her chair dictating that the tv be continuously playing CBB’s. Aaagh! This is a first for me. Thankfully there’s Facetime to keep me going. It’s going to be a long week! Until next month... Angela & Sammy

Neighbourhood Watch We held a successful evening presentation on CCTV at the Sports Club last month and are now putting together a detailed plan as to how we can roll out a pilot trial in Richings Park. If you would like to be a part of this or are merely curious then enrol in the Residents Association Neighbourhood Watch group via our website.

Subscriptions As well as accepting cash or cheques as before, our website also allows for on-line subscription payments. So, if you’ve not yet paid your subscription for this year and mislaid your donation envelope then take advantage of this facility.

We received a positive response from Keep Britain Tidy who are being funded by Heathrow to improve the lot of the local communities around Heathrow. We hope to be able to avail ourselves of some pro bono help in the maintenance of the residents’ garden.

Residents Garden

Broadband

A reminder that if you would like to support the upkeep of the Residents Garden and the planter tubs by the shops you can buy a lottery ticket from the South Bucks and Chilterns Lottery. This means that if you buy a lottery ticket from their website and nominate us as your chosen cause then we receive 50p per ticket which we are putting towards the cost of upkeep for the garden. Tickets can only be purchased on-line at www.chilternsouthbuckslottery.co.uk.

OpenReach who are responsible for the work required still keep running into problems thus delaying our access to fibrebased broadband. One of our parish councillors is on their case and is keeping up the pressure on them to deliver.

Heathrow The newly appointed chair of the Heathrow Community Engagement Board attended our June committee meeting where she outlined her plans for this forum. This is a new

initiative that has been spun out of the original Davis Report into runway expansion in the South East. It is independent of Heathrow but is funded by them though the Department of Transport. We see this a possible route for us to challenge Heathrow on any plans they might have that would be detrimental to our area should Parliament give their approval to the expected National Policy Statement that is due to be voted on between the date of writing this article and the publication of July’s In & Around.

Western Rail Link to Heathrow The plans exhibited during last month and the end of May are truly frightening in their impact upon the road system in Richings Park and Langley. The only way we see as being able to change this is through political pressure via the MPs for our constituency and for Slough. We are therefore going to see if we can partner with the Langley Neighbourhood Forum to achieve this end.

Choosing your barbeque .. Gas vs Charcoal Gas barbeques are quick and easy. Just turn on, and you can cook immediately, with an easily adjustable heat source. It is also cleaner with no ashy mess to clear out afterwards. However, the downside is you won’t get the traditional barbeque flavour in your food. Charcoal barbeques require a bit of time and effort – in preparing the coals, lighting them and waiting for them to get hot, but many people believe the distinctive smoky flavour is worth the effort. Charcoal barbeques are also generally more portable than gas, so if you’re heading off to the beach for the day you can easily bring it along. Just make sure you have plenty of fuel. There’s nothing worse than getting to the big day and discovering you don’t have any! Have a bucket of water next to the barbecue in case of emergencies.

will taste of smoke and kerosene from the firelighters! A charcoal fire takes between 35-45 minutes from lighting to reach cooking temperature. Pile fuel into the centre of the fire box to allow for a cooler area around the edge of the grill. It’s time to cook when the fuel glows red with a layer of white ash over it. The rack should be searing hot to prevent the food from sticking to it. You can oil the grill bars if you wish. Soak wooden kebab skewers in water first to prevent them catching alight. The middle of the barbeque is likely to be the hottest. Use this area to sear the outside of your food. Once seared, meat and poultry can be moved to the rim where it will be a little cooler, as they will need slower cooking than vegetables and fish.

There’s so much more to barbecued food than blackened sausages and under-cooked beef burgers. Get inventive! Variety is the essence of a great barbecue. Steak and other dense meats are perfect. Once seared on each side, move them to Generally charcoal barbeques are cheaper than the cooler edge for proper cooking and keep bastgas, but you need to factor in the cost of the char- ing. Chicken is safer if taken off the bone and coal and lighter fluid vs the cost of gas refills, and bashed flat before grilling. The thinness will help it cook evenly, safely and quickly. Don’t turn the food most importantly, your own preference. too often. Good quality burgers are a must. One Techniques for perfection little tip is to press a dimple into the centre of the burger to avoid the ballooning effect. There’s also a technique to cooking on traditional barbeques – place your food on too soon and you’ll Vegetables add a splash of colour and provide tasty end up with a blackened mess! Cooking Safely

On a good day in the summer, bacteria will double in number every 20 minutes! With raw or partly cooked food sitting around outdoors at a barbeque, care should be taken to avoid cross-contamination – keep raw poultry and raw beef apart, but also be careful not to mix raw food with any cooked food or salads. Always use separate utensils to handle cooked and raw foods, and be sure to wash hands after handling raw meat. If you’ve used a marinade to flavour raw meat, it is likely to contain bacteria, so you can’t use this as a sauce to serve with cooked food.

Steak or Chicken Marinade

Use this to marinate steak or chicken and discard the remaining marinade when the meat is cooking on the BBQ. Ingredients: 6 fl oz vegetable oil 3 fl oz soy sauce 2 fl oz Worcestershire sauce 2 fl oz red wine vinegar 1 fl oz lemon juice 1 tsp dry mustard 1 tsp finely chopped parsley good pinch salt and pepper In a medium bowl, mix together oil, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, wine vinegar, and lemon juice. Stir in mustard powder and parsley and season with the salt and pepper.

Planning Like all good parties, the perfect barbecue requires planning. Paper plates, napkins, disposable cutlery and plastic cups may never be stylish, but they’re tailormade for barbecues and save on all that clearing up after the event. Put a couple of bin bags around your garden to encourage your guests to tidy up after themselves. Prepare for a glorious summer of eating al fresco, but don’t forget to check the weather forecast and have a “plan B” in case of rain.

4 g grated fresh ginger root pinch ground pepper In a large bowl, gradually stir hot water into peanut butter. Stir in chili paste, soy sauce, oil, vinegar, garlic, ginger & pepper. For the Kebabs Bite-sized Chicken pieces Bamboo skewers, soaked for 30 minutes in water (to prevent them burning). Place chicken in marinade, and turn to coat evenly. Cover, and refrigerate overnight, turning occasionally. Thread chicken pieces onto skewers. Discard marinade. Barbeque the kebabs for 8 to 10 minutes per side, or until no longer pink, and juices run clear.

BBQ Bananas Takes just 10 minutes to make

Peanut Butter Marinade & Chicken Kebabs

Ingredients for the Marinade 4 fl oz hot water 5 oz smooth peanut butter 1 oz chili paste 2 fl oz soy sauce 1 tbsp olive oil 1 fl oz white vinegar 4 cloves garlic, crushed

Cut a lengthwise slit in each banana, being careful not to cut all the way through. Spread open slightly. Gently pack one tablespoon of brown sugar inside each. Drizzle the liqueur or brandy over the brown sugar.

If you like Chicken Satay from your local Chinese takeaway, you’ll love this.

Place on the barbecue for 4 minutes on each side. Top each grilled banana with a small scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog. With those mesmerising eyes, enchanting 2 year old Magic is hoping to cast a spell over someone who can offer him a peaceful and loving home. He’s a quiet boy but loves a good fuss and being groomed.
