Dear Readers Welcome to the

Inside this month’s issue

August issue of In and Around Iver Another fairly eventful month, with Sammy being offered her new permanent home and the usual matter of days to plan the move and once again pack everything up, ship it a few miles down the road and unpack it all again. They say moving is one of the most stressful lifetime events, and given this is her third move in as many months, it’s safe to say, we’ve all been pretty stressed. Thankfully, this was her final move, at least for a few years, so a few wines have been drunk in celebration and life can hopefully settle back into something a little less chaotic. Sammy and Summer-Hope are two very happy residents of Denham and we’re two happy parents, with a tidy home once again and our little family now just a stone’s throw away! I’m still harbouring a dream of a few days back in sunny Portugal next month, but darling daughter’s moving and birthday may have just depleted the bank of Mum and Dad for now. Sadly, the dream is being placed on hold awaiting financial recovery. In the meantime, I’ve been quite happy relaxing in my garden in the evenings with the requisite chilled glass of wine, a bbq dinner, which thankfully I don’t have to cook, and my newly acquired garden gadgets. Yes, remote controlled solar lights. Perfect holiday ambience, at a snippet of the price. Until next month .Angela & Sammy

THE RICHINGS PLAYERS HAVE GRADUATED WITH A FIRST! I’m incredibly proud of the amazing cast and crew who did such a professional and inspiring job – well done all!”

The Richings Players, Iver’s award-winning amateur theatre society were honoured that Girton College, Cambridge - the UK’s first residential institution for the higher education of women – invited the society to perform Jessica Swale’s inspiring play “Blue Stockings” at a Festival to celebrate their 150th anniversary in June. The Players performed “Blue Stockings” at Iver Village Hall in October 2018, directed by Sophie Torrent and received rave reviews from audiences. Sophie was delighted to take up the mantle of bringing this play to life again in its true setting, with many of her original cast. The play, which opened at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in 2013, follows the challenges faced by women in education at the turn of the Twentieth Century and sheds light on this real event that coincided with the growing campaign for suffrage. It was just one step on the road to equality of opportunity for women and was met with fierce and ugly opposition, culminating in a riot on the streets of Cambridge! The so called ‘blue stockings’ had a long way to go but their strong spirit and persistence were important elements in the story of suffrage, equality and emancipation for women. Director Sophie says; “What an absolute honour it was to perform “Blue Stockings” at Girton – it’s finally returned home! I was blown away by the support we received after the performance especially from the Mistress of Girton College Professor Susan J Smith. The cast and crew worked incredibly hard on what happened to be the hottest day of the year – they were so professional throughout the day! I couldn’t have done it without the cast, crew and committee’s support – I couldn’t be prouder.”

President of The Richings Players, Heather Harper MBE adds; “We were delighted at being asked to perform “Blue Stockings” at Girton College, Cambridge. The recognition of our society to stage Jessica Swale’s play during the Girton 150 Festival was a great honour, especially to be performing her work where women first had an opportunity to learn. It is also meaningful to us that the Richings Players first production in 1923, “Tilly of Bloomsbury” was written by a graduate of Cambridge, Ian Hay (John Hay Beith). It is worthy of note that the ladies performing in this play would have had to wait another three years to gain equality with men for their voting rights in 1926! Our society has flourished over the last 93 years and we were very proud to be bring this excellent production of “Blue Stockings” ‘back home’.” Rooted in real events in and around Girton College, this will be the first time the play has been performed on site, amid the Victorian buildings where the story unfolded. The Mistress of Girton College, Professor Susan J Smith says: “My favourite line in Jessica Swale’s riveting play about Girton’s early days is: ‘we don’t get buffeted by the wind, we change its course’. I’ve seen some great productions of “Blue Stockings” but this performance by the Richings Players is going to be hard to beat!” Before the performance, author of the play, Jessica Swale says; “I am so delighted that “Blue Stockings” is 'coming home' to Girton. It's been an absolute privilege to spend time in this world, to imagine this story and to I hope, honour those early pioneers in doing so. And now, to know it is being performed only a stone's throw from the portraits of the real Miss Welsh and Emily Davies is such a thrill. I wish all at Girton the most fantastic and welldeserved celebration in their 150th Anniversary year”.

The highlight of Girton’s 150th Anniversary year was the Festival which took place on 28th to the 30th June - two and a half days of thoughtprovoking intellectual stimulation, creative experiences, hands-on activities and enjoyment! Over 500 alumni, Fellows, staff, students and their famiEvelyn Stafford-Allen, Chairman of The Richings lies booked for Saturday’s activities of which the Players said after the performance; “It was a joy to centerpiece was the special performance of “Blue watch our amazing Richings Players family perform Stockings” in its original location. “Blue Stockings” in the ground of Girton College. 10
