Dear Readers Welcome to the October issue of

Inside this month’s issue

In and Around Denham And the last few weeks, before the truly extended nights return. Don’t forget the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 28th at 2am! Now let’s see if having reminded everyone in print, whether I actually remember to do it myself. Obviously there’s a bit of a Halloween theme to this month’s issue, and a wee hint of Christmas is also starting to appear as our local venues start to gear themselves up ready for the festive period. October for us will see us celebrating little SummerHope’s first birthday, which in itself makes me wonder about just how quickly a year passes by. Was it really a full twelve months ago that we were on a constant hospital vigil? A year ago that all of us had absolutely no idea how different our lives would be with the introduction of this new little family member? And yet, oddly, I can’t remember what it was like to wake up without seeing that little face each morning or working without her crawling into my office for a quick Nanny hug. I wonder just how different things will be again this time next year? Until next month... Angela & Sammy

Dear Resident,

2018 10

By the time this goes to press, none of our September events have run yet so we are keeping our fingers crossed for some really good weather for the last of this years’ summer Jazz on the green and our WW1 Centenary event. You may have seen a poster about our application to the District Council for Denham to become a single Ward. Currently we are split into three separate wards for voting purposes. This is reflected as 1 Councillor to represent Denham South West, 7 Councillors for Denham South and 7 Councillors for Denham North. This breakdown is pretty meaningless these days as the demands on us increasingly cover the whole of Denham. We are all aware that there are in fact at least five hamlets in Denham that have different needs and we consider all areas in our debates. For example, over the years we have installed a children’s play area in all five main communities and we also hope to see defibrillators installed in all areas. We also provide grass cutting and street light maintenance for all areas. When we discuss issues, make plans and prepare budgets, we look at the issues facing Denham as a whole and try to act fairly on all matters. We do not have ‘a party line’ and base our decisions on fairness and need in the community, leaving the politics to those representing us in the District, County and Parliament.

Monday 1 October 4 to 7pm Denham Parish Office. Drop-in session for anyone who wishes to understand more about our submission to the District Council for a Governance Review on Wards. This is important to you as a Denham resident and we would urge you to give SBDC your views by sending your views to http:// www.southbucks.gov.uk/article/6404/Review-ofParish-Councils-Denham-Farnham-Royal-andStoke-Poges 12

We have received a great many thanks for the work that we’ve had done along the Pyghtle between the Railway Station and Denham Village. We know it looked a bit drastic at first but most of the comments received have been about how much safer residents feel walking along there as it has really opened up the view. However, this type of work is a very costly exercise and we had to apply for funding from our Local Area Forum which is chaired by our County Cllr. Roger Reed. Due to the pathway breaking up we have also been petitioning for this to be repaired before winter sets in. The Pyghtle Footpath passes under the Denham Railway Station and the Council were requested by the police to install a motor cycle inhibitor to slow down motor cyclists due to the number of nuisance riders and concerns of risk to pedestrians. The inhibitors will continue to allow cyclists to pass through, once they have dismounted, and will also allow access for those using disability aids. No one should be inconvenienced

The Parish Council Meets on the 2nd Monday of every month (except August) at 19:30 in the Parish Office, Rear of Denham Village Memorial Hall, Village Road, Denham, and residents are always welcome to attend.

Marilyn Heath Chairman, Denham Parish Council Our grateful thanks to ‘In and Around Denham’ for providing this Platform for us

Fireworks night can be terrifying for many dogs, but did you know that teaching dogs to cope with noise fears in advance can help lessen the stress they experience when they hear the unexpected whizz, pop and bang of fireworks?

starting at such a low volume that your dog is not worried by them. The volume and direction of sounds are changed over time, but so slowly that your dog does not show any signs of fear. The sounds should also be associated with something that they enjoy, such as their favourite treats or a game. Dogs who are very frightened already may require support from a qualified, experienced behaviourist. For more tips and advice visit Dogs Trust Dog School, a national network of experienced trainers providing fun, educational courses for all dog owners based on up-to-date scientific research.

Choosing your Bespoke Glass Splashbacks

Bespoke glass splashbacks are fast becoming the wallpaper of the kitchen. They are one of the first elements of the kitchen you notice as soon as you step inside. So how do you choose what colour, pattern, or picture to have in your new kitchen?

You can add a natural feel into your new space, by incorporating a splashback such as the one pictured. Adding this can create a much calmer space, and something to really stand out in your kitchen. The beauty of the splashbacks being bespoke means that it does not break up the picture. Unlike The lovely thing about splashbacks is that you tiles, glass splashbacks do not have grout lines, don’t need a large area to make an impact. Adding a feature such as the ocean splashback, pictured, really does add a soothing and calming atmosphere to the kitchen space. We love the idea of these landscape splashbacks and the moods that they reflect. As the kitchen becomes the ‘hub of the home’ making it a welcoming and calming environment is essential, and these splashbacks do this effortlessly. Splashbacks also appear to make the room look larger by reflecting the light in the space. They are toughened to withstand a heat source and because they are bespoke, they can incorporate socket cut outs, holes or notches. Theadora

Looking for loving homes Theadora

Theadora is a beautiful 1 year old black and white female short-haired cat who is looking for a new home because her previous owners could no longer care for her. She is a sweet and fairly quiet girl, who can be a little shy with strangers but quickly gains in confidence once she gets to know you. Theodora loves her food, playing with toys and being fussed. She would prefer a home without other cats where she can enjoy the undivided attention of her human family. This lovely youngster so deserves a fresh start and the perfect home that really will be forever this time. Could you offer Theodora all this and the lifetime of love she is looking for?

Kittens

Kitten season is well advanced now and despite having found lovely homes for more than 50 kittens already this year, we still have a fair number in our care. Kittens come to us having been found as strays or abandonments with and without their mothers. Owners of unneutered females also turn to us to take unplanned litters which they have neither the time or money to care for or cannot home. One beautiful black cat was already heavily pregnant when she was signed over to us because her owner had developed allergies. The cat later gave birth to 2 black and 2 tabby babies at our cattery. Each of these kittens will spend at least 9 weeks in our care before they can join a new family, and the mum cat a minimum of 3 months until she has reared her young and can be neutered. This is just one of many litters that puts such a strain on our resources every year. There are ways you can help and anything you can do is appreciated: - Neuter your cats to avoid contributing to the number of unwanted kittens and also for the wellbeing of your cats (for neutering advice / help please call us on 01895 231435) 34

Jeremy’s Appeal

Jeremy, a beautiful little terrier cross was 8 weeks old when he came into our care as a puppy farm rescue. We quickly found that this sweet boy suffered from a birth defect called Phimosis. Essentially he had a severely narrowed foreskin where the opening of the sheath was tiny which amongst other things was preventing normal urination. Our vets at Arden House Animal Hospital undertook the surgery required to enlarge the opening and rectify the problem. Thankfully Jeremy will now be able to enjoy a perfectly normal life. The cost of the procedure, associated treatment and post-operative care is just under £500. If you could spare even a small donation for Jeremy so funds will continue to be available for other animals in need of essential but costly veterinary procedures like this, we would be extremely grateful. Donations can be made via our website www.rspcahillingdonclinic.org.uk using the “Donate” option (please mark for Jeremy) or call 01895 833417 for other ways to give. Thank you on behalf of our gorgeous little dumpling Jeremy! If you can offer a loving home to any of our animals, please call us on 01895 833417 or visit www.rspcahillingdonclinic.org.uk to apply online. Thank you as always for your support.
