Dear Readers Welcome to the July issue of

Inside this month’s issue

In and Around Denham This morning, as I write this intro, there’s a mixture of sadness and excitement as I look at the mounting bags and clutter amassing in the hallway. No, I’m not moving again, although looking at it, you could certainly think someone was moving out. Today is the day that Sammy and baby Summer go off on their little week away to enjoy some sunshine and visit the seaside. I’m so excited for them, as the break is much needed and weather wise they couldn’t have a better week ahead. The usual thoughts are entering my head, will they get there okay? will she have remembered to pack everything? I’ll have a good tidy up when they’ve gone and things will actually stay tidy for a whole week. Oh yes, all is good! And then, before they’ve even left the house, empty next syndrome sets in. A whole week with no one at home to talk to while I’m working, no one to nag for making a mess, no little baby Summer bouncing in her chair dictating that the tv be continuously playing CBB’s. Aaagh! This is a first for me. Thankfully there’s Facetime to keep me going. It’s going to be a long week! Until next month... Angela & Sammy

Dear Resident,

2018 07

We’ve had some nice weather lately that has enabled us to enjoy some outdoor events and activities. There was some good weather, albeit a bit overcast for the annual Denham Village Fayre last month along with another lovely day for our Jazz on the Green. Let’s hope it keeps nice for the June event. Have you noticed the work that has been done on some of the trees along a section of the A412 (after the Denham lights towards the railway bridge)? If you travel that way you can’t fail to notice what has been achieved. As part of their commitment to the community, Artemis Tree Services offered to improve the visual impact of these trees for us and what a fabulous job they are doing. Well done and many thanks for offering to do this for the community. We have received many comments about how good it is beginning to look along there. Please keep up the good work. We have now ordered the new playground equipment for the Alderbourne play area which is our responsibility. We have also ordered a light and some camera equipment in the hope that we can stop the reckless vandalism of this equipment. You may remember that we once also leased the Alderbourne and Tilehouse fields that surrounded this play ground, however, BCC no longer wanted to give us a lease and reclaimed them. Unfortunately, they aren’t keeping them in very good condition, so we have reminded them of their responsibilities. Neighbourhood Planning is progressing. If you have any comments or ideas that you 14

feel would benefit the area, please drop us a line in order that it can be discussed by the Steering committee. As we mentioned last month, we were very surprised to hear about all the work that is done by the Fire Service these days, especially the help they give the elderly. Hopefully we will be able to let you know more about this next month. At our June Parish Council meeting, the Police reported and discussed with us the crime figures for Denham. A couple of important issues came out of those discussions. Firstly, we must report all crime. Too many people are shrugging their shoulders and not bothering to get a crime number because they don’t think the police will do anything about it. Well, firstly they certainly can’t do anything about crimes not reported to them and secondly (my thinking is) if they don’t know about it, it can’t be reflected in their figures which then has a knock-on effect of those higher up thinking less support is needed in the area. So, can we all please report to 101 matters that aren’t urgent but need a crime number. The Parish Council meets on the 2nd Monday of every month (except August) at 19:30 in the Parish Office, Rear of Denham Village Memorial Hall, Village Road, Denham, and residents are always welcome to attend.

Marilyn Heath Chairman, Denham Parish Council Our grateful thanks to ‘In and Around Denham’ for providing this platform for us

dog alone in a car on a warm day. Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog. A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm. When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within the hour.

With those mesmerising eyes, enchanting 2 year old Magic is hoping to cast a spell over someone who can offer him a peaceful and loving home. He’s a quiet boy but loves a good fuss and being groomed. Having previously lived as a house cat, he will need a home which can offer plenty of indoor space to exercise and lots to do to keep him healthy and happy. HS2 Tree Planting Mitigation (From the Harefield Protection Camp) By Sofia Kazi

And now some good news the HS2 tree planting mitigation has just begun! For the millions of trees which will be cut down to pave the way for the notorious high-speed rail project, HS2 have pledged to replant 7 million. Crowders Nursery up in Yorkshire has been busy growing thousands of native species of oak, hornbeam and alder soon to be flourishing in Hillingdon in once empty fields. Wonderful news we cry, time to stop protesting and give HS2 a pat on the back! Now I don’t consider myself an unreasonable person but sadly, delving beneath the surface of HS2’s famous statement ‘no net loss of biodiversity’ we uncover that the reality is not quite as it appears to be.

trees, but when trees are planted at 1m spacings they will be increased competition for water nutrients and sunlight and it is certain that a very large percentage of these tress will have to be felled. If you look out from Dews Lane into the gated enclosure you don’t have to be a horticulturist to spot these trees have been planted too close together. Colne Valley is a species rich nature reserve with a high ecological and conservation value and I question why HS2 are not prioritising and implementing the strictest mitigation measures for nature conservation. We can hazard a guess as to why HS2 have squeezed so many trees into such little space and my bet is, that it is just another exercise to report figures that look good on the table. To state that seven million trees will be planted sounds good to anyone but is grossly misleading when the expected survival rate is immediately halved at best making the reality of ‘no net loss of biodiversity’ into an increasing mockery.

Tree planting at Dews Lane is one of several local sites for ecological mitigation. But what is surprising is that these young trees appear to have been rather densely packed together, easily noticeable when compared with the adjoining woodland. This planting density immediately raises questions to their growth and wellbeing, so my first port of call is to approach the HS2 help desk for more information, they said: At woodland ride edges (Dews Lane) 1m average centres are likely to be used There is no compensation for the cutting down of with an anticipated tree planting density figure of mature trees especially our ancient woodland.
