Dear Readers Welcome to the August issue of

Inside this month’s issue

In and Around Denham Wow! The kid’s are off school, everyone’s going away on their holidays and the sun is still shining. Just how quickly is this year flying by? Inspired by (or should I say envious of) Sammy and Summer’s seaside holiday, I made the quickest ever holiday booking online, so that’s me off to Portugal again next month. The sudden realisation that if I didn’t do something, the year would have passed by and I would still be sitting in my office working. Being self employed really does require a lot of self discipline, not just in terms of putting in the hours and avoiding the temptation to go out and enjoy the lovely weather, but also to actually plan to take time out and stop working for a while. Having spoken with a number of self employed people, this seems to be a common problem - achieving some sort of work/Life balance. Unlike a 9-5 job, there will never be enough hours in the day, there will never be a clear desk and empty inbox and there will never be nothing to do. After nearly 13 years, I’m accepting that and taking the time out anyway .. Now where’s that sunlounger? Until next month... Angela & Sammy

Lucky

Looking for loving homes Lucky Lucky doesn’t feel as if he’s living up to his name right now, after being given up for rehoming through no fault of his own. At six years old, this very handsome boy is desperate to start afresh in a peaceful, loving home ideally without young children or other pets. A nice garden to explore and chill out in would be much appreciated. Lucky is such a friendly boy, who loves attention and will make a pawsome companion. Could you bring the luck back into his life with the offer of a lifetime of love and care?

Nero Nero is a lovely 3 year old bullmastiff / boxer cross in need of a new home and lots of love. She is a friendly girl, happy to be around people and enjoys a good snuffle about on her walks. She can be a little hand shy and will need help building her confidence, so we are looking for a home with experience of large breeds who can offer her the time and understanding she needs. Nero could live with older children and possibly another dog. If Nero may be the perfect dog for you, please get in touch.

Use pet safe sun cream on exposed parts of your pets skin, such as the tips of their ears and nose, to avoid sunburn. If you're unsure on the right product, please ask your vet.

Ensure pets always have access to shade and fresh drinking water to help keep them cool. Check every day for flystrike. Keep long haired animals well groomed to avoid matts which will trap body heat. Damp towels for your pet to lie on or an ice pack wrapped in a towel could provide a welcome relief from the heat. Dogs may also appreciate a paddling pool to splash around in. Keep fish tanks and reptile / amphibian enclosures out of direct sunlight and change water regularly to prevent overheating. Top up pond water levels and ensure fish have access to shaded areas. Check temperatures inside enclosures regularly to ensure they are at safe levels for the species. Keep indoor captive birds out of direct sunlight and ensure aviary birds have shaded areas. All birds need access to clean fresh water, both for drinking and bathing. Always check sheds, greenhouses and summerhouses before closing them up. Cats could become too hot or dehydrated if trapped.
