FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE Norwood House Pave Lane, Newport TF10 9LQ

slices of melt in the mouth lamb fillet, cooked until still slightly pink served on a bed of fondant potatoes, with celeriac purée and a red wine jus, we were both very satisfied with our choices of main course and both thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The dessert menu has a mouthwatering array of tempting treats, so needless to say we both went for the full 3 course offer! Aaron ordered the Tutti Fruiti Cheesecake and I opted for the intriguing Textures of Pear. The Cheescake was a really fun and vibrant dish, the cheesecake tasted just like lemon sherbet and was served with a scoop of bright blue bubble gum ice cream! The overall effect was very reminiscent of an old-fashioned sweetie shop, it was fun and tasty and it raised a smile too! My textures of pear dessert arrived beautifully presented and as the name might suggest it did indeed cover a plethora of pear textures, including poached pear, pear parisien, pear purée and pear glacé. The poached pear was perfectly soft and refreshing in contrast with the pear glacé which gave an intense hit of sweetness and a crunchy texture, this was a cleverly thought out and well presented dish which I thoroughly enjoyed, it was a lovely light ending to the meal. During our visit I was delighted to discover that the restaurant is also open for Sunday lunch between 12 noon and 4pm, the Sunday lunch menu starts from £14.50 for two courses and £17.95 for four courses including coffee and a home-made mint truffle, which is great value for a quality meal. The Sunday lunch menu has something to please everyone, with traditional roasts, fish and vegetarian options available. Norwood House really is a hidden gem and a must visit destination for foodies, the cuisine is top quality, the atmosphere is cosy and intimate and with the fabulous champagne menu it offers incredible value too. For a fine dining experience without the fine dining price tag you really must put Norwood House on your to do list this autumn!

Norwood House is a chic and cosy eatery located in the charming countryside setting of Chetwynd Aston on the outskirts of Newport.

To book call 01952 825896 or text 07760 780554

Hosted by Anita, the restaurant has recently re-opened after the owners took a short break to concentrate on private functions. Being able to offer exclusivity, and catering for upto 140 guests, Norwood House is an excellent venue for weddings and special occasion celebrations. Having dined at the restaurant in the past I was keen to return as soon as I heard about the relaunch, as the standard of the food has always been excellent and once again I wasn't disappointed. On arrival we ordered drinks to enjoy in the pleasant bar area while we perused the menu. I was happy to see that the ever popular Champagne Menu is back, offering incredible value without compromising on choice or quality; it's available from Thursday to Saturday from 6pm till 9pm and for just £20 per person includes 2 courses and a glass of bubbles or for £24.95 you can upgrade to three courses. To start my husband ordered the Thai crab cake and I went for the garlic mushrooms, after enjoying a few sips of our very nice chilled champagne our food arrived hot and attractively presented. The crab cake had a golden crispy crumb coating and inside was light and fluffy crab and potato filling, Aaron commented that the flavour of the crab cake was mildly spicy with a delicious savoury Thai flavour, it was accompanied by a flavoursome tomato basil jam and fresh mixed salad leaves. My garlic mushroom starter was served in a rather cute miniature frying pan, it consisted of a medley of mushrooms cooked in a rich and creamy garlic sauce, topped with a crunchy golden pesto crumble, it was very

tasty and moorish and made for a great start to the meal, the crumble topping added a crunchy texture which worked well with the richness of the mushrooms. For our main courses we ordered the 8oz fillet steak with peppercorn sauce and the lamb fillet. The fillet steak was cooked exactly to Aaron's preference and was very tender, it came served with a generous portion of perfectly crisp yet fluffy hand cut chips and a side of fresh seasonal veg.

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

had been given the choice to have either chips or mash too). We also ordered some seasonal vegetables to accompany our dishes, which were perfectly cooked. Nik’s lamb came with a herb cous cous and had been cooked with Middle Eastern spices, Nik commented, ‘The spicy slow cooked lamb melted in the mouth, the minted yoghurt added a refreshing coolness from the spices and the light and fluffy cous cous had hints of sweetness with juicy sultanas‘. As our waiter asked us about desserts I quickly jumped in before Nik to order the dessert of the day, which was a Pistachio Parfait with Chocolate Mousse. Nik opted for the Dark and White Chocolate Roulade. The pistachio parfait was quite a firm texture but when you put it in your mouth it quickly melted, a great combination of textures with the velvety smooth rich chocolate mousse and an added crunch from the pistachio nuts. Nik’s White and Dark Chocolate Roulade was wonderfully rich and luxurious and drizzled with a smooth chocolate sauce, pieces of candid orange added a citrus burst of flavour - quite an indulgent dessert. Sunday lunches are available between 12-4pm, 2 courses are £14 and 3 courses are £19. A lunchtime menu is available between 12-3pm. Dinner is served 6:309:30pm Wednesday to Saturday. The restaurant has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where locally produced food, simply cooked is the order of the day. From the Autumn there will be more steaks added to the menu and they will be focusing on more steak specials, we are looking forward to coming back to try those. So whether it’s a sophisticated night out you’re after or a lazy Sunday afternoon, Granary Grill has all occasions covered.

The Granary Grill is situated in the beautiful grounds of Weston Park stately home, the granary building was built in 1767 and was the last building on the grounds to be restored in 2009. The building retains many interesting features with lots of exposed brick, high ceilings and large arched windows. The split level seating area provides diners with views from the mezzanine level over the Church Pool to the estate cottages or looking out onto the Granary courtyard, which is perfect for al fresco dining (weather permitting!). The Granary is also home to a deli, café and art gallery. The restaurant has a rustic feel but it is very clean and elegant, just as you would expect from such a venue. We were shown to our table which was situated on the upper part of the split level restaurant, the view from our table was amazing and we were lucky enough to watch the sun go down as we dined. In the centre of the restaurant is the bar which is very well stocked with a great selection of wines, beers and spirits. I ordered a large glass of white wine and Nik chose a bottled Moretti beer. For starters Nik ordered the Fried Tiger Prawns and I chose the Spiced Confit Duck Spring Roll. Nik’s prawns were served with garlic and chilli aioli sauce, Nik said the prawns were wonderfully fresh and succulent; the chilli aioli gave a welcome hit of heat to the juicy prawns. My spring rolls were served with a marmalade and soy dipping sauce that added lots of flavour to the dish, the spring rolls were lovely and crispy on the outside and very soft on the inside, just perfect.

12

For the main courses there were a good selection of dishes including some cooked on the grill where you can see the chefs prepare your meal before you. The open plan kitchen is at the heart of the restaurant where the sights, sounds and smells create a sense of theatre. Head Chef Guy Day and his team serve up homemade classics, signature steaks and dishes with an imaginative twist. I ordered the Home-smoked Pork Belly and Nik chose the Braised Lamb Shoulder. I could smell the smokiness of my pork belly before I even took a bite and it tasted even better than it smelt; there was a large mushroom, grilled tomato and a lovely sweet apple sauce to accompany my meal, I had also had some new potatoes which were perfectly seasoned with a little melted butter (I

A simple, one-colour scheme is relatively easy to get right – provided you choose the right colour. Combining two or more can be more challenging, but hugely rewarding. As Little Greene MD David Mottershead says: “Using paints effectively in interior design is a much more sophisticated process than selecting a single colour from a paint chart. One colour in isolation can be attractive, two in combination can be beautiful and three shades used together can be quite exquisite.” Once you have narrowed down your choices and tried the apps, Fired Earth’s creative director Rob Whitaker has some further tips that will help: “Think about creating a mood board of magazine cuttings and swatches to inspire you, layering colours and textures to build a balanced palette. Buy tester pots of the paints you’re considering so that you can see what they look like as the light changes throughout the day. To really get a feel for the colours, paint A4-sized pieces of paper and stick them to all of the walls that you’re planning to paint. Another trick is to paint the inside of a cardboard box so that you can see how the colour changes as the walls reflect off each other.”

Katherine Sorrell outlines how you can employ paint to colour your home beautiful. It’s fair to say that most of us are cautious about using colour; in fact, a survey by Dulux found that three-quarters of respondents were afraid of making the wrong colour choice. So how can we boost our colour confidence? Easy: arm yourself with a little knowledge and make the effort to experiment. You can always repaint if you don’t like the results. Where to start? Well, it’s a good idea to leaf through as many interiors books and magazines as you can get your hands on. A wealth of effort and experience has gone into producing room sets that work for all kinds of tastes. And don’t forget that all the leading paint manufacturers produce masses of helpful information, from colour cards to brochures that demonstrate how different shades can be put together – and even interactive free apps where you can paint a virtual room without having to apply a single drop of paint: try Dulux’s Visualizer or Crown’s MyRoomPainter, for example. Consider the sizes of your rooms. Would you like to make a small room seem bigger, or a large room more cosy? The basic principles are that pale colours, because they contain a lot of white, seem to recede, enhancing a feeling of spaciousness, while darker colours absorb light and therefore appear more enclosing. Similarly, ‘cool’ colours such as blue and green are more distancing than ‘warm’ colours such as red and yellow. This is why people tend to use paler, cooler colours in small rooms, and white on low ceilings, reserving bolder or darker colours for large, bright rooms. That said, you can break the rules if you wish: perhaps by using a dark, warm colour to make a small room feel welcoming and intimate. From a practical point of view, paint those parts of the house that show the dirt

18

You may be happy with a classic colour palette that will last for years but, if you want to get on-trend, look out for fashion-forward hues. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, an earthy metallic that works well with both fresh pastels and rich jewel tones, while Pantone’s colours of the year are Rose Quartz and a soft blue called Serenity. Crown’s autumn/winter palette is based around three looks: Out of the Dark, with black and charcoal plus dashes of bright yellow, pink and orange; Skyscapes, employing shades of blue mixed with grey and chalky neutrals; and Faded Berries, offsetting deep berry tones with mossy and grassy greens. To conclude? Do your research, seek out your favourite style and either follow fashion or go your own way. The colour possibilities are endless.

NATURAL PAINTS

Natural paints are generally made using combinations of ingredients such as linseed oil, lime, turpentine, citrus oil, chalk and earth and mineral pigments. They allow walls to breathe, so moisture is not trapped beneath useful if your house is slightly damp - and they don’t become statically charged, thus reducing the build-up of dust on painted surfaces (good for allergy sufferers). Because they are more flexible, they tend not to crack or flake. They use either fully renewable raw materials or those that are in plentiful supply, and energy waste during manufacture is kept to a minimum. Manufacturers claim they are just as effective as conventional paints – if not more so – and, what’s more, they smell nice! Brands include Earthborn, Lakeland, Auro, Nutshell, Aglaia, Pots of Paint and Eico. In terms of furniture, the Art Deco look was low and upright in design, featuring geometric outlines with rounded corners, and often the shell, fan or sunburst shapes that are key to this style. Two completely new pieces had recently been invented: the coffee table and the cocktail cabinet, the latter something that has become inextricably associated with the style. Functional and space-saving, fitted kitchens became increasingly widespread, while the Art Deco bathroom (still a relatively new room in most homes) featured solid yet elegant shapes and glamorous looks, with plenty of chrome and bevelled-edge mirror. To decorate walls, botanicals or geometrics were frequent motifs, while upmarket homes might have lacquer or wood panelling, mirror tiles or even trompe l’oeil murals. And Image - Artworks Art Deco bathroom, Original Style, 01392 473000; www.originalstyle.com this was the era of fabulous parquet flooring, perhaps with the addition of a zebra skin or a boldly abstract rug (today’s fashionable chevrons are a descendant). Soft furnishings were, in high-end interiors at least, sumptuous and costly, with silk and velvet (tasselled and fringed, of course) especially desirable. However, as the look filtered down it was cotton, chenille and moquette that gained in popularity, often featuring graphic patterns in bold colours or the monochrome of black, white and grey. Everything was bathed in a new form of artificial light – electricity – and the widespread use of new-fangled electric fittings meant that The Roaring Twenties saw the jazz age in full swing from designers paid increasing attention to their appearance. Decadent Deco

The luxe looks of Art Deco never go out of fashion – and, according to a recent survey by Olympia’s Art & Antiques Fair, it’s the nation’s favourite design style. We take a look at the history of this glamorous, good-looking movement.

Early Art Deco furniture was exclusive and luxurious, made from costly materials such as hardwoods, lacquer, mother of pearl, shark skin, tortoiseshell and leather, and frequently featured extravagant veneering and inlaid decoration. For collectors, then, this period is highly desirable and correspondingly expensive. However, as the style spread around Europe and became hugely popular across the Atlantic, designers gave the look a twist, employing the latest technologies and less expensive materials, such as stainless steel, chrome and Bakelite plastic. In the States it became known as Streamlining, and its curvy lines were the must-have look for a host of new

House builders employed features such as rounded bay windows, doorways with stepped surrounds and garden gates with sunrise motifs. The vocabulary of brightly coloured zigzags, chevrons, exotic animals and stylised flowers was added to furnishings, accessories and practically any type of homeware possible – and thus what had been a luxurious look available only to the few had become an everyday style that was found in all sorts of ordinary homes.

Get Amazing Internet

EVERYWHERE

Home or abroad, here’s how to get the best connection...

For many of us an internet connection is essential - so what can you do if your connection is slow, unreliable or barely usable? The good news is that most internet connection problems are really easy to fix.

Telford & Wrekin Council is delighted to announce the borough will be holding a European Market this year in the lead up to Christmas.

Anyone who has visited similar style markets before will be pleased to hear that there will be a bar as well as the obligatory sausages for that real authentic European market feel. There will be 32 traditional chalets featuring 70 per cent European and 30 per cent local market stalls. In addition, there will also be a little funfair to entertain the younger crowd as well as performances from local choirs and acoustic bands for that real Christmas atmosphere. Councillor Shaun Davies, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We have been discussing the possibility of a Christmas market for a long time now, and I know many local residents have raised the idea since the opening of Southwater two years ago. “Since it was announced on social media yesterday the interest in the market has been phenomenal, and despite it only being September I’m delighted at the excitement and buzz that is already building online.

If the Wi-Fi is fine or you’re connecting directly to broadband with a cable, it’s worth checking out the Speedtest.net website. This tells you exactly how fast your broadband connection is. You’ll never get the “up to” speeds advertised, but if your connection is falling far short - so for example if you’re getting around 1Mbps on a line that’s supposed to be good for 12 to 20Mbps - then it’s time to have harsh words with your internet provider.

“The market will not only be showcasing food, drink and products from authentic European stallholders, but will also give a number of local businesses the opportunity to have a stall of their own at an event which is likely to attract thousands of visitors “We’ve been putting Telford and Wrekin on the map with our astonishing growth over recent years and holding this market shows our continuing intention to make the borough a destination of choice.” Telford & Wrekin Council is working with Retail Alternatives to bring Telford European Christmas Market to the borough, also supported by Telford Shopping Centre. To keep up to date with the latest news visit the event page on Facebook Telford European Christmas Market.

Fitted Wardrobes

Lots of storage space at a fantastic price! Lots of designs for beautiful floor to ceiling fitted wardrobes to fit any size and shape of room.

Most broadband connections are ADSL, which uses existing copper wires to bring broadband alongside your phone line. But there’s a newer, faster technology called fibre-optic. That’s what super-fast services such as BT Infinity and Virgin Media offer, and if you’re lucky enough to live in an area where fibre broadband is available it offers a massive increase in speed. What happens if you can’t get any kind of wired connection? Many areas with ropey broadband get decent mobile phone coverage, and if you’re in a 3G (or even better, 4G) coverage area you can use your phone as a personal hotspot. That turns your phone into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot that you can connect to; it then sends and receives data over the mobile phone network on behalf of your connected device. Beware, though: such usage can quickly rack up lots of data, so if you’re on a limited mobile data deal - which is the most common kind of package - you might find yourself needing a more generous data allowance.

22

COMING TO TELFORD

Beginning on 1 December, the market will run daily right up until 23 December offering a wide range of food, drinks, crafts and more.

To identify the problem, it’s important to look in the right place. If you’re connecting to your broadband via a wireless router, that wireless connection could be the culprit. Wi-Fi signals can be obstructed by things such as radiators, metal mesh in the walls, pipework and even furniture, and you’ll often find a poor wireless connection can be fixed by moving the router, or upgrading to a faster one if the existing router is getting old: Wi-Fi technology has improved dramatically in recent years, and a router you buy today will be much faster with much better range than a similarly priced one five years ago. If your home simply isn’t Wi-Fi friendly - because it’s huge, or made out of really thick stone - then a Wi-Fi range extender can boost the signal, or you can opt for something called Powerline networking. This uses your house’s electricity circuit to transmit data between plug sockets, which sounds like madness but works really well. Look for Powerline AV if you want to have connections fast enough for streaming high quality video.

Be particularly mindful of data if you’re using your phone as a hotspot abroad. It’s often a better idea to turn off data roaming on your phone and look for public Wi-Fi hotspots instead, because something as simple as checking email and Facebook can easily result in big bills. Some networks offer roaming deals that enable you to use mobile data when you’re abroad for a small daily fee, but if you don’t take advantage of them you’ll soon discover that mobile data can be more expensive than gold, oil or printer ink.

I have two make up bags – one for my essentials and one for all those extra eyeshadows, lip glosses and other cosmetics that I might only dig out occasionally. I only keep the bare minimum in the smaller bag, so that I can find everything within the 30 seconds I usually have free before rushing out on the school run. Clarins’ new Supra Volume Mascara, £21.50, has found a well-deserved space amongst my other essentials. It glides on easily, without clumping, and makes lashes look much longer. One coat is ideal for everyday, while two provides the wow factor for a night out. It’s also enriched with panthenol, to help strengthen lashes.

Enhance Your Lashes

WITH A LIFT & TINT

Jude Ingram has been established as a mobile beauty therapist for over 14 years. Jude offers a wide range of treatments for her clients to enjoy in the comfort of their own home. Her latest treatment has been a great success with her clients who have been amazed at the result of the new lash lift and tint treatment which enhances your natural eyelashes.

Makeup bags do tend to get rather grimy, and can be a bit of a breeding ground for bacteria. Mine can’t be bunged in the washing machine, more’s the pity, so I’m planning to treat myself to some new ones very soon. I have my eye on the Kit The Cat Make Up

Bag, £15, and Washbag, £22, from Oliver Bonas.

This wonderful eyelash enhancing treatment can lift and lengthen your own natural lashes to create a brighter, fuller, wide-eyed look. It is a great option for those unsuitable for eyelash extensions, or those who would prefer a more natural look. Short, straight or very fair lashes can benefit from this innovative treatment making lashes look longer and thicker. Your natural lashes are lifted into position for your desired amount of curl, and then tinted for further depth and definition. This treatment lasts up to two months without maintenance.

I love gel effect nail polishes. Nails Inc.’s are amongst the best out there, and they’ve added four new colours for autumn. The new range - All Fired Up - also includes charcoal to ‘help protect nails against toxins and pollutants’. I can’t testify to how successful it is at keeping those pesky pollutants away, but the gold shade (Crown Place, £15) goes on like a dream, gives nails a smooth shiny finish and lasts for ages.

Would you like to say goodbye to fine lines and wrinkles? We offer non surgical cosmetic treatments to hold back the years, helping you achieve the look you desire. We offer a full consultation, whether you would like to reduce the signs of aging or enhance your features, we will be able to advise you on the appropriate course of treatments for a natural result.

You should never feel guilty about devoting half an hour to some much-needed ‘me-time’. A bubbly bath, glass of wine, music and face mask and you’re ready to face the world again. Neal’s Yard Remedies Rose Formula Antioxidant Facial Mask, £26.50, suits most skin types, even us sensitive souls. Kaolin and pink clay help to exfoliate and draw out impurities, but the mask doesn’t leave skin feeling dry or tight after use. It’s very gentle, and helps to hydrate and soften tired skin. What’s more, as it’s packed with plant extracts and essential oils, such as geranium, rose and marigold, it smells lovely.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so do take a minute to check yourself out. While a lump is one of the most common symptoms, it’s not the only one. Others include pain, redness and a change in shape, size or texture. Head over to www. breastcancercare.org.uk to find out more. Several brands have released products to fundraise for breast cancer research. Not all come with a decent charity donation though, so do check before buying. I’m tempted by Aveda’s BCA Hand Relief, £20. It’s a lovely product anyway, being rich in antioxidants and very hydrating, and a portion of sales will help to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Powers to Ban Letting Agents Welcomed New laws which give local authorities the power to ban rogue landlords and letting agents have been welcomed by managers at Nock Deighton. The law will come into force on October 1, 2017, and it will be a groundbreaking moment, marking the first time that a letting agent can be banned from the industry. Dawn Clarke, director of lettings and property management at Nock Deighton, said the move was long overdue. “As the regional representative of the Association of Residential Letting Agents, I have been involved with various campaigns to push for this law to be introduced, so I am delighted it is finally coming to pass,” she said.

“Previous governments have never reclassified letting agents so they come under the same legal framework as estate agents, which never really made sense to me. “That meant that letting agents who may, for instance, have been involved in criminal proceedings such as stealing deposits, could have just carried on working in the industry. “Now, thankfully, that will be a thing of the past. We would, of course, recommend that people use a reputable agent who has experience of property management in their area so they can be sure their property investment is in safe hands.” Before the new law is introduced, there will be a

The Southwold The perfect space to entertain family and friends was top of Angela Proctor and Richard Humpherson’s wish list when they began searching for their first home. Telford was the ideal location: good transport links with the West Midlands for Angela’s job as a NVQ assessor and in close proximity to Richard’s work in South Staffordshire; but to start with they were undecided about whether to go for a project or a new build. Richard sketched out their dream downstairs layout on the back of an envelope and his drawing turned out to be exactly what they found when they were shown The Southwold house design at Bovis Homes’ Oakford Grange development. “He literally drew the layout of this house. It was unbelievable,” says Angela. “We do like to entertain at home a lot and I didn’t want a kitchen diner separate from the lounge area. I wanted it all to flow out into the back garden as well, because we do love al fresco dining; and that’s exactly what we have here. People are really taken aback when they come through the door and they see how big and wide and spacious it is. We love it.” Angela is full of praise for sales advisor Tracy Groom and independent financial advisor Jay Foster who helped them through the buying process. “I really can’t sing Tracy’s praises enough,” she says. “She knew that we were first-time buyers, and so did Jay, and they literally started from the beginning and explained it all. They made it so easy. It was brilliant.”

34

Richard and Angela used the government’s Help to Buy scheme, which enabled them to get the three-bedroom home they’d set their hearts on.

Have you been dreaming of making that big move and owning your own home?

“Initially we didn’t really want to go down that route but we loved the house and the area,” says Angela. “It’s not a massive development but it’s big enough for you to go and have a walk around of an evening if you want to, and it’s right next to some green space: there’s a pool at the top of the road, and it’s very quiet and well laid out. I love the way that the garages are at the back of the houses so you feel that you aren’t going to have loads of cars around. Everything’s neatly tucked away.”

With interest rates at historically low levels plus the Help to Buy scheme* now is the perfect time to make that move and get on the property ladder.

The help they received from the sales team was invaluable in helping them make their decision to go for Help to Buy. “It was just so easy because of the way they explained it,” says Angela. “They didn’t put any pressure on us. It was all done in a very advisory way and not as a hard sell. There was none of that. It was all very much about answering our questions and letting us decide what we wanted to do.” And the Bovis team pulled out all the stops to make sure that Angela and Richard could move into their new home in time for Angela’s birthday in May. “Tracy knew it was my birthday and they got us in just beforehand, so I was in for my birthday,” Angela says. “I was absolutely over the moon. Tracy and Roy the site manager made it really enjoyable. It was just seamless. I couldn’t wait to get here and it felt like home right from the word go.”

How Much Does it Really Cost

TO BUY A HOME?

Land registry This will confirm who holds the legal title to the land, and whether there are any charges on the property, such as a mortgage. Drainage and Water The water company will confirm whether the property is connected to the mains water supply, drainage and surface water drainage. This search also reveals whether any public drains are located on the land. Environmental An environmental search utilises historical information about how the land on which the property was built, and the land nearby, was used in the past – industrial or commercial uses, for example – and indicates whether contamination might be an issue. Any risk of flooding is also highlighted using data from the Environment Agency.

The true cost of buying a home isn’t always obvious when you start looking, and many people are unaware just how much the additional fees can mount up. In fact, when consumer group Which? carried out a national property survey, over 25% of buyers and sellers said that moving had cost them more than expected. So apart from your mortgage, what extra fees and expenses might you face when buying a new home?

Homebuyer Surveys

Stamp Duty affects the purchasers of residential freehold or leasehold properties sold forover £125,000, with rates currently standing at: • £125,001 to £250,000: 2% • £250,001 to £925,000: 5% • £925,001 to £1.5 million: 10% • Over £1.5 million: 12% As a buyer, you must send a Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) return along with your payment within 30 days of completion.

Removals

Mortgage lenders will carry out a basic valuation survey to confirm how much the property is worth. The price of this can start from around £150, but varies according to its value. Two other types of survey are also available - a Homebuyer Report and a full structural survey.

Home Insurance

Conveyancing and Solicitor’s Fees Solicitors tend to charge a fixed fee for their time, and then add on the costs of local authority and land/water searches separately, along with other searches that you might want to carry out.

Buildings insurance is an important aspect of buying a property, and will be a requirement by your lender if you’ve taken out a mortgage. Contents insurance also protects your belongings in the event of fire, flood, or other disaster. It’s a good idea to factor in these extra costs before you start looking for a property. You’ll be more confident that your budget will stretch far enough, and won’t have to suffer any nasty surprises later on. www.which.co.uk/money/mortgages-and-property/guides/buying-ahouse/the-cost-of-buying-a-house/

Local Authority Local authority searches include the Local Land Charges Register. Your solicitor will also find out about any issues such as new roads that are being planned near the property, any parking restrictions or tree preservation orders, for example.

Using a removals firm can seem like a large expense if you don’t have a lot of possessions, and many people choose to hire a van instead. Removals firms generally charge from £300 for a small move, but may charge more for weekend work.

The cost of these surveys can vary depending on your location and the size of the property, but expect to pay from around £250 for a Homebuyer Report and upwards of £600 for a structural survey.

OCD Awareness Week

9TH - 15TH OCTOBER

While people may joke about being “a bit OCD,” this trivialises a serious and potentially debilitating condition. OCD Awareness Week aims to correct the misconception that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder merely concerns harmless habits or quirks.

Pa rt of t h e Rot h e rwood G rou p

a new standard in healthcare

What Is OCD? 12 in every 1,000 people suffer from OCD, experiencing a range of compulsions, obsessional thoughts and repetitive behaviours that seriously affect their day-today life. On average it’s undiagnosed for 10-15 years, yet 50% of cases are severe, meaning symptoms occupy more than three hours a day.

If you’d like to arrange a viewing or just need some advice - we’re here to help:

01952 619 850

Sufferers typically develop OCD in their late adolescence or twenties, but it affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. They may recognise their condition, yet find it hard to believe their compulsions won’t relieve their anxiety or prevent harm.

or

2. Anxiety: caused by the obsession. Paranoia or a feeling of over-responsibility may develop and sufferers may believe they or their loved ones are in danger from something harmless - or that their actions can prevent or cause unrelated harm. 3. Compulsion: behaviours or thoughts patients are compelled to repeat as a result of the anxiety – although often, they’re not realistically connected. 4. Temporary relief: felt briefly when they have ‘completed’ the ‘necessary’ actions.

Types of OCD • Checking: e.g. rechecking locked doors or checking that intrusive thoughts aren’t real memories. • Contamination/Mental Contamination: a fear of germs or verbal abuse, which makes sufferers feel dirty/unworthy. • Hoarding unnecessary and/or excessive items. • Ruminations (prolonged, time-consuming thoughts on harmless topics) or Intrusive Thoughts (disturbing and repetitive in nature, e.g. imagining violence).

What Causes OCD? Genetics: OCD seems to run in some families; this may be a genetic link or ‘learned behaviour’. Brain differences: In some sufferers, imaging shows increased activity and blood flow in brain areas that handle emotional response and a lack of serotonin (a neurotransmitter influencing memory, mood and sleep). Trauma and Emotional Upset: Suffering neglect, abuse, isolation or trauma such as a break-up or bereavement seems

44

Personality: Certain personality traits, such as perfectionism, may increase the likelihood of developing OCD. While many people exhibit OCD-type symptoms when stressed, OCD is only clinically diagnosed if symptoms:

• Consume over an hour a day. • Cause significant distress. • Interfere with ability to function in day-to-day life. OCD symptoms may wax and wane, but if left untreated they usually become more severe.

Treating OCD Fortunately, OCD can usually be treated with professional help, although improvement may take several months. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) encourages people to talk through their fears and behaviours and find healthier ways of thinking. Behavioural exercises including ERP (exposure and response prevention) support patients to face fears one at a time and let obsessive thoughts run their course without ‘correcting’ them with compulsive behaviours. Over time, this challenging treatment can help patients reduce symptoms or sometimes achieve complete recovery. Some people may need medication alongside or before CBT to relieve their anxiety enough to undertake therapy. Medication: SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) increase serotonin levels. At higher doses they’re often highly effective in treating OCD, but need to be taken for 12 weeks before benefits are noticeable. Patients with moderate or severe OCD may need long-term medication. Back Pain

The most frequent pain problem we treat as physiotherapists is back pain whether it be acute or chronic, just in the spine or referred down the leg and presenting as sciatica. Back pain can be present for a number of reasons be it a muscular problem, disc, facet joint or postural. All can be a significant problem. There are a number of myths about back pain which often can change the way we work with the pain, how we obtain diagnoses and how we should manage and treat our back pain. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy have published a number of myths associated with back pain.

Myth #1 - Moving will make my back pain worse Fact: People fear twisting and bending but it’s essential to keep moving gradually increase how much you are doing, and stay on the go. Often reduced mobility can cause more restriction and pain.

Myth #2 - I should avoid exercises, especially weight training

Fact: Back pain shouldn’t stop you enjoying exercises or regular activities. In fact, studies found that continuing with these can help you get better sooner – including using weights where appropriate. Your guideline should always be pain and try not to work through it

MYTH BUSTERS

12 WEEK BODY

TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME

Myth #3 - A scan will show me exactly what is wrong Fact: Sometimes it will, but most often it won’t. Also even people without back pain have changes in their spine so scans can cause fear that influences behaviour, making the problem worse.

Myth #4 - Pain equals damage

Finally…A proven transformation system that works even if you have struggled in the past

Fact: This was the established view but more recent research has changed our thinking. Modern physio takes a holistic approach that helps people understand why they are in pain. All the above are examples of myths surrounding back pain the evidence tells us that mobility is better than rest, that gentle exercise is better than no exercise and that pain is often not a measure of how severe a problem is. It is important to understand back pain and to work with it. If you do suffer with back pain and are struggling to manage the pain and find yourself wondering what is a good pain and what is a bad pain, can I do a certain activity or not or are just not sure if you’re doing the right or wrong things then all our 6 physiotherapists can help. Each physiotherapist has over 15 years experience in treating musculoskeletal problems.

Severn Hospice A local charity is calling on businesses across Shropshire to sign up to its Store Wars and help to raise funds to care for families throughout the region living with incurable illnesses. Severn Hospice Store Wars is set to return this November 19th. Each business that gets involved will be allocated a Severn Hospice shop to take over for the day and will be challenged to see which shop generates the most sales to raise as much money as possible for the hospice. The businesses will also compete in the two weeks before the takeover to gather the most donations from within their company to sell in their Severn Hospice shop.

STORE WARS

The winning team will take home the coveted Severn Hospice Store Wars trophy. The hospice needs as many local businesses as possible to get on board and take on this charitable challenge and will be accepting applications until 30th September 2016. If your business would like to compete to be champions in this year’s Severn Hospice Store Wars please contact the fundraising team at fundraising@severnhopsice.org.uk or call 01952 221351.

Local businesses already signed up to compete in Severn Hospice Store Wars include Interserve Healthcare, the CoOperative, Tesco and Swinton Insurance. Pam Buso, of Tesco in Telford, said: “We think this is a fantastic opportunity to do some team building whilst helping a vital local charity. Severn Hospice provides incredible care for those who need it and we want to give back to the community by supporting its wonderful work.” Hannah Millward, Payroll Manager at Interserve Healthcare, said: “We’re really looking forward to putting our sales team to the test to raise money for this incredible local cause. We’ve already gathered some brilliant donations and have some great ideas to raise lots of money for the hospice, who do such a fantastic job.”

COMES TO NEWPORT PHYSIOTHERAPY PRACTICE . . . Recent National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines list seven conditions that can be treated effectively which include: Plantar Fasci-itis Chronic Achilles Tendinopathy Trochanteric Pain Syndrome Chronic Tennis Elbow Shoulder Pain (sub acromial pain syndrome) Patella Tendinopathy Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy

Shockwave therapy is an exciting new electrotherapy treatment used in orthopaedic and rehab medicine. It uses an acoustic pressure-wave similar to the science used to break up kidney stones. By disrupting chronic scar tissue at the site of the original injury, the process allows a fresh new healing process to proceed encouraging normal painfree tissue to be laid down. Recovery is further helped through correct exercises, including stretching, strengthening and conditioning.

Friendly Professional Advice with Time to Listen Hands on Treatments

So if you’re fed up with the pain from a chronic injury and would like to discuss this new treatment or if you need any advice on physiotherapy, please contact Anna on 01952 811525 or 07887 930642.

MOTORS & LEISURE

An Interview

WITH LEWIS HAMILTON... Instead of driving: “I usually ride my motorbike. Sometimes if I get home and I want to unwind I might take the car out, but I want to keep the mileage low on all my cars! So I don’t ever really go that far.”

He thinks he’s matured For someone who has a reputation for speaking his mind, Hamilton portrays a calm aura and claims his years in racing have matured him.

The A - Class. Athletic at first sight.

He said: “Age, I’m sure, has helped, but as you grow with the team…you realise your place in the team, you know, what I say to the camera is what the guys back at the factory hear me say, and you realise that you’re affecting all of those people with the things you say, so I’m conscious of those things.”

He’s a British hero and an F1 champion and just after he won the British Grand Prix, we were lucky enough to be a part of a small group of journalists who were given the chance to chat with Lewis Hamilton at the launch of the new MercedesAMG GT R. Here’s what we learned about his views on road cars, racing outside F1 and gaining an inch…

He wouldn’t drive in any other series than F1 On the subject of racing in something like the Nurburgring 24-hour race, he said: “I like that I can take [the AMG GT R] around the Nurburgring and have a lot of fun, but I don’t really have any desire to race anything else. The problem is, once you come out of F1, everything else is a step down.” At 31 years old, though, he acknowledges he’s heading towards the end of his career, saying: “That might change. I’ve been driving since I was eight years old, so when I stop racing I’m probably going to have massive withdrawal and want to drive something…”

Danger is exciting Although no car racing appeals to Hamilton, he does say he’d like to have a go in MotoGP, because even riding his bike on the motorway is scary, “so imagine what it must be like at the speeds those guys are going.” On the subject of danger and improving safety, he says: “One of the exciting factors is when we get in that car and we know the danger factor is there. When I see Niki [Lauda], he’s just awesome, he’s a legend, he drove in a time when people were dying often. Obviously we’ve lost a couple of drivers in the last few years…I think it is important for us in the sport to always be considering [safety] and always be working on it, but I hope the danger’s always going to be there, because otherwise anyone could do it.”

Bikes beat cars His garage might be full of luxury motors, but he rarely drives them, preferring to keep the mileage low and the value appreciating.

50

In a sign of the relaxed maturity we rarely see from him during race weekends, he says it’s important to keep perspective when you have a technical fault that’s out of your hands.

Drayton

His engine has 508 different settings Hamilton had a tough time in Baku after his team put him in the wrong engine setting. Team radio rules didn’t let them tell him how to fix it, which prompted a discussion about F1’s regulations. He acknowledged having fast, technical racing that’s also exciting is a difficult balance to find, but said: “It’s insane how much stuff we have to study…the problem is they’ve made the cars so technical. Of the engine switches I have, one is just one to 14, and the other is one to 14, but in each of those settings is another 10 options.” His colleague then mentioned that they’d calculated there are 508 possible combinations.

He does what he likes Away from the paddock, Hamilton has grown a reputation for enjoying a celebrity lifestyle, and has been seen having fun on jet skis on holiday. Does the team tell him to reign in his extra-curricular activities? “When I was at McLaren I said ‘these are the things I like to do, just so you’re aware’ and when I joined this team I already told them ‘these are the things I do, I’m not gonna stop!’ You know, I’m conscious, I never want to watch someone else drive my car, so I try to be as sensible as I can whilst having fun, which isn’t always the easiest balance.”

He wants to be a development driver “I was talking to Tobias [Moers, AMG boss] and I was like ‘you’ve got all this Formula 1 technology and you have the Formula 1 world champion driving your car – utilise that!” With all his experience behind the wheel, Hamilton clearly sounds frustrated when he describes wanting to change things about cars when he drives them. To get around that, the threetime world champion wants to do a “limited edition series, which I can test, which I can set up and be hands-on with the design.”

Renault’s Clio has previously been seen as the teenager that refused to grow up. However, with the model celebrating its 25th birthday this year and the French carmaker introducing a host of new styling and design cues, could this be the most mature Clio yet?

level trim, meaning that drivers looking to spend less are left with the option of one of the pre-existing powertrains.

We head to Bordeaux to test out the Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav and find out.

Unfortunately for the Clio, the B-segment isn’t a sparse market. It is packed with affordable rival superminis including the DS3, Citroen C4 Cactus and Ford’s Fiesta. Drivers wanting a more premium experience can opt for the Audi A1, and try as it might, Renault’s updated model proves no match for this German hatch.

What is it? This is Renault’s facelifted fourth-generation Clio. Originally launched back in 2012, the model has been upgraded both aesthetically and mechanically. The latter comes in the form of a new diesel powertrain – the 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel, previously seen in Nissan’s Qashqai – and the option of a manual transmission coupled with the pre-existing TCe 120 petrol engine. Renault has poured a lot of resources into the styling of the new Clio, which will lead the way for the rest of its range to be updated. A new grille, re-profiled bumpers and a cleverly designed LED light signature feature on the exterior of the car, while C-shaped daytime running lights can also be specified on certain models.

The basic spec Clio starts from £10,495, meaning the range includes both affordable and high-end (for the B-segment) options.

Any rivals?

The Clio has been lengthened and widened, which alongside a sportier appearance and increased cabin space, delivers better handling. New polyurethane suspension bump stops and a quicker steering rack give the car improved agility and body control, but not enough to make the drive markedly different to its predecessor. The 108bhp engine is powerful enough to allow the small car to dart around, and a spread of torque across the revs means it can accelerate with ease in any gear. The stop/start feature, which comes as standard on a number of the Clio grades, is easy to get along with and doesn’t cut out at unfortunate moments - as it does in some of the Clio’s B-segment competitors.

With the option of 30 different colour combinations, five roof decals, and four exterior customisation packs, it’s little wonder that the model has been dubbed ‘the most stylish Clio yet’.

A driver-activated Ecomode, which is standard on the Dynamique Nav model and above, can reportedly improve fuel economy by up to 12%.

What’s under the bonnet?

Verdict

The diesel engine produces the typical grunting noise, which is particularly noticeable when the car is at idle or moving slowly, but fades to an indistinct hum at 3,000 revs. The dCi 110 returns an impressive 80.7mpg, while emitting just 90g/km CO2.

What’s the spec like?

Renault claims to have developed the B-segment hatch into something much more versatile and mature than its predecessor. However, with the new diesel powertrain only available in the top-spec model, we can’t help but feel that the carmaker is shoehorning itself into the more upmarket end of the segment. This facelift does well to refresh the product and keep it relevant amongst constantly improving competitors.

Spec on the £17,755 dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav is extensive, with an updated sound and infotainment system with Bose speakers and the new R-link connectivity system featuring as standard.

But with 13 million units sold worldwide since it was launched in 1991, and 12,589 sold in the UK alone between January and June this year, we very much doubt the Clio will be going out of fashion any time soon.

However, the new diesel engine is only available in this top-

Putting the MEN Mentoring Charity looking for Volunteers. Children’s charity Mentor Link supports vulnerable and distressed children and young people by providing long term one to one social and emotional support. Using Safer Recruiting techniques the charity provides fully trained volunteer Mentors to support and listen to referred pupils that are identified as likely to benefit from this type of support. The Mentors listen to, befriend and support young people with the aim of creating a more positive attitude towards themselves and their learning. The mentoring helps the young people build a positive future and their well-being forms the focus of our service. Formed in 2002 the charity now mentors around 450 young people each year across the West Midlands and Warwickshire area, and are recruiting more male volunteers to work with boys in the Telford area for 30 minutes to an hour once a week.

Volunteer Mentor Nigel writes... Having recently retired, I was talking to a neighbour who was a Mentor, and I thought I would really like to do that. I saw Mentor Link’s advert in the local paper, and the next day I applied. It has now been 19 months since I have been mentoring, and I find it so rewarding. GARDENS & OUTDOORS

GARDENING Make use of an outdoor table which is normally left out throughout the year. In spring it is unlikely that you are going to use it for outdoor entertaining, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid and will make eating out of doors even more fun and stylish.

By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but make this the year that you are a touch more adventurous and, if you don’t have any open ground in your garden and do your gardening purely on a terrace, patio or in a back yard, then don’t forget that there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume. Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but if you’ve no space for trees then miniature bulb varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Simply choose a suitable selection such as miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a random or scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display. On special occasions you may have been sent some flowers and these are often delivered in ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are also available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet. These make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as crocuses - simply fill them with bulb fibre and then plant up in the same way as you would a bowl of bulbs for an indoor display. To ensure that drainage is definitely not a problem, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and then use any normal multi-purpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better.

56

If your garden or back yard is a good size, then make sure that you use some large containers as these look particularly handsome if you can afford the space. Packed full of a single variety of one of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they will look absolutely gorgeous and make a very striking and bold display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is planted a couple of inches deeper than the other, and you will find that the display is prolonged slightly as the deeper ones will flower somewhat later than those planted closer to the surface If you want something really wacky, why not consider using an old bathroom suite or parts of it to make some very unusual planters? A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget that good drainage will be necessary - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or perhaps just the cistern can be planted up to great effect. For a truly ornamental look, put an old watering can or wheelbarrow to good use by turning it into a planter; it’s the sort of thing you pay a fortune for in a garden centre! And then, guess how to make a decrepit pair of wellies or the pair of boots with a hole in them look fun: yes, these too make wonderful bulb containers!

It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now. Every one up and down the country should be crammed full of bulbs, many at an incredibly reasonable price, and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour, sometimes with scent, for many years to come.

An old bucket - particularly an enamelled or galvanized one - makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base, or if this isn’t possible, ensure that you place a layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. These are a tool where it is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Most garden centres offer stainless steel or coated steel garden tools. Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but the price is usually considerably higher. Coated steel tools are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them at the end of each season and periodically throughout the year, they last well.

Autumn is now here. There is plenty to do in the garden and if you want to make jobs as easy and speedy as possible, it is essential that you have the right equipment. Whether you are just out to buy a few new tools or are setting up a selection of equipment for the first time, it really does pay to choose the right things in the first place. What you choose is going to depend to an extent on how often you are likely to do any one job and on the size and type of garden you have. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as possible. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. Try handling any gardening tools before you buy them, so that you can ensure that they are the right size and weight for you and that the handles are comfortable to hold. If the tools do carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when you bought it. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built if they are to do jobs such as digging, turning over soil and so forth. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Some traditional-style garden tools may have wooden handles but most now have D-shaped plastic handles. Choose forks and blades whose metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting

60

A hoe is useful for weeding between small and established plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Keep your hoe sharpened at regular intervals and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) or longer shaft which is comfortable for most gardeners to use. However, if you are very tall, then longer ones may be available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heart-shaped head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used.

A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings. A garden rake can also be used to rake up leaves although the job is slightly harder, but its main use is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris. You can then use the head of the rake to help level off the soil. If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you to weed quickly and easily, even between fairly closely spaced crops. You can also use it to weed in amongst ornamental plants of course. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, and in gravel in asparagus beds etc, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small red-handled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! PETS:

It’s very common for puppies to chew, and it helps them to relieve the pain of teething. They also use their mouths to explore the world and its contents, but when your clothing and shoes become the target you’ll probably feel it’s time to take action. When your puppy is small, nervousness can also cause them to destructively chew anything in sight. Separation anxiety and boredom are common in dogs left alone for a period of time, so what can you do to prevent complete devastation when you return home? • Provide safe, tough items for your dog to focus on.

HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG CHEWING You can buy a range of age-appropriate durable toys and chews from pet stores and other outlets. • Restrict their access to your possessions, or limit them to a couple of rooms in the house. • Make sure they get enough exercise – this is especially important if you’re leaving them for a while, as tiredness will reduce their need to chew. Could it be attention-seeking? All dogs need quality time with their owner, and it’s possible they could be chewing simply to get your attention. If you give them plenty of play time and attention in short bursts, positively reinforcing good behaviour, you should soon see a difference. Consistency is the key to stopping unwanted chewing. Your dog will respond to rewards for chewing its own toys, and also to the negative response, e.g. withdrawing your attention for a while when your shoes are the target. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/07/2012/behaviour/how-to-stop-yourdog-chewing/ https://www.cesarsway.com/dog-behavior/destructive-chewing/5steps-to-correct-inappropriate-dog-chewing https://www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/how-control-dogschewing

What Exactly is a Credit Score When you apply for credit or other types of borrowing, the lender will check your credit score to see if you are a good or bad risk. Your credit rating also comes into play in other situations, and has the potential to affect every aspect of your life. A low score means that you may have to pay an increased rate of interest to counteract the risk to a lender. This has massive implications if you’re trying to obtain a mortgage, as a poor credit rating can mean less product choice and higher monthly repayments. Even smaller financial outlays such as a new mobile phone contract involves a check on your credit file by the provider, so it’s a good idea to understand what constitutes your credit rating, and whether you can do anything to improve it in the future.

Credit reference agencies

Three main credit reference agencies exist in the UK – Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit. Your credit rating is made up of various aspects of the information they hold about you, which is contained within your credit report. Any County Court Judgements (CCJs) or other markers of insolvency/bankruptcy remain on your credit file for six years, so even though you can be discharged from bankruptcy in 12 months, the fact is evident on your report for a much longer period of time.

How is a credit score formulated?

A number between zero and 999 is used as a guide to lenders and other interested parties, such as landlords and utility companies, about your ability to repay. A high score translates to a low risk as far as they are concerned – in other words, the lower the score the more problems you could face. Scores between 721 and 999 are generally considered a lower risk, but there are other factors that influence your overall rating: • Your previous history of repayment. • How much credit is available to you. • The level of debt. • Whether any County Court Judgements have been made against you for non-payment, or if you have been made bankrupt in the past. • If you are on the electoral roll. • How many times you have applied for credit. • The length of time your bank account has been open. If you’re married or living with a partner and have a joint mortgage or loan, you’ll also see a financial link with this person. This can adversely affect your rating if they have experienced their own financial problems.

64

AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? So how could a low credit score impact on your life?

Difficulty in getting a mortgage

Even if you find a lender willing to offer you a mortgage, the interest rate will probably be much higher, and you won’t have access to the better deals. Having a low credit score is often an indication that you can’t afford a mortgage, but unfortunately it can also affect your ability to rent. Problems renting A landlord will check your credit score - if they see that payments have been missed or that you are not on the electoral role, they could view you as untrustworthy and an unnecessary risk.

Personal loans and other finance

CD Financial Limited is an appointed representative of Openwork Limited which is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. Your home maybe repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. Our fee for arranging a mortgage is £195.

Obtaining car finance will be difficult if your credit score is low, as this is the main factor on which a lender bases their decision. It’s not only the large purchases that can be stifled, however – you may also encounter problems when trying to increase your bank overdraft or when requesting a higher limit on your credit card.

Mortgages investMents Protection insurance

Limited ways to pay Your credit report can impact on the way you pay for goods in shops. With so many store and reward cards now available, they are a popular way to amass points and enjoy reductions in-store. Again, your credit score will be checked if you apply for this type of card, and along with the information on your application form, will influence the company’s decision.

How to improve your credit score over time

If your credit rating is low, or you feel that it could be better, there are specific actions you can take to improve it over the long-term: • Make sure you’re on the electoral register, as a permanent address increases confidence that you’re trustworthy. • Pay at least the monthly minimum on your credit cards. • Cancel any unused credit cards appearing on your credit report - too much available credit adds to your risk from the lender’s viewpoint. • Check for mistakes on your credit report, with all three agencies – you can request that they amend your report, and add a comment against the entry to explain that it is incorrect. • If a spouse or partner has a poor credit score, you can apply for a financial disassociation. A good credit score can make your life more straightforward, so it’s worthwhile reviewing your credit report every so often to make sure that all the details are correct, and also to check for any suspicious activity. It’s possible to obtain a copy from any of the credit reference agencies for a few pounds. http://uk.businessinsider.com/how-your-credit-score-canimpact-your-life-2016-5?r=US&IR=T https://www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/money-matters/guide-tocredit-scores.shtml

Christmas

IS COMING!

Terry Jones Solicitors are pleased to announce the appointment of Oliver Nicholas who has recently joined their Motoring Law and Regulatory Law team based in Telford. Covering work place and vehicle based prosecutions, he offers a few words of wisdom for your driving as the seasons change… Autumn Driving: The seasons have changed and that is the time to check your battery, windscreen wipers, washer bottle levels and tread depth. Consider that air contracts when cold so your tyre pressures drop in the autumn and winter. Winter Driving: You did all of your checks in the autumn, now you should keep warm clothes in the car, plan your route in advance, watch out for your battery level and keep windows clear. Obscured windows can lead to accidents and/or prosecutions. Seasonal Tips: Snow – Check your anti-freeze levels. Clear your windows. Remember - high gear, low revs to keep you moving…. The police always advise against leaving the car unattended with the engine running – it could even affect your insurance cover should the worst happen. Ice – Drop your speed, keep your distance and be gentle on the pedals. Flood water – Don’t forget your car is not designed to sail. If the water reaches half way up your wheels consider giving up and choosing another route... you may get through deep flood water only to find your engine ruined days later. If you are unfortunate enough to be investigated or prosecuted for work or vehicle offences simply contact Terry Jones Solicitors for 24 hour advice on 07850 033551 or on olivern@terry-jones.co.uk

Newport Businesses BY SECURED TELFORD GROWTH FUND Future Telford & Wrekin Council has secured the future of a number of Newport businesses by buying Audley Avenue Enterprise Park and is seeking £7.5m Government funding to deliver high tech jobs in the town.

The Audley Avenue site had been earmarked for future residential development by its previous owner St Modwen. When the site was offered for sale, the Council - working with the Newport Regeneration Partnership - saw the opportunity to acquire the estate to add to its Property Investment Portfolio which ensures the industrial provision will continue. This will safeguarding local jobs and deliver an income to the council to invest in frontline services. The Audley Avenue Enterprise Park forms part of the larger Audley Avenue Industrial Estate, an established industrial location on the edge of Newport. The 13 current tenants occupy a total of 136,769 sq ft in subdivided units in two detached buildings across a site of 7.37 acres. One of the largest tenants on the estate is Jupiter Marketing Ltd, whose joint managing directors are Mark and Yvonne Tweddle.

They said: “We have a thriving business in Newport at the Audley Avenue Industrial Estate employing more than 160 staff, since establishing our business in 2001.

“We had been concerned for some time about our future given the previous owner’s intentions to sell the site – we were obviously aware of the possibility that it could be redeveloped for housing.” The investment is part of the Council’s commitment to develop employment opportunities in Newport including the submission of a bid for £7.5m Government funding to create a new enterprise and science park at a new site south of the A518. Alongside the expansion of Harper Adams University with its new Agri-Engineering Centre, the investment will deliver opportunities for new and growing high tech businesses and support existing businesses to stay local and grow. Plans for the site include both start up units and sites for more established businesses all of whom will benefit from the Council’s Enterprise Telford programme of business support including new grant funding. Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council leader, said: “We have said time and time again that we are absolutely committed to supporting existing businesses to expand as well as attracting inward investment to our borough and that is one of the reasons we created the Telford Growth Fund.”

The Muse – Jessie Burton

Stolen Years – Kazia Myers

Burton’s The Miniaturist was one of 2014’s bestsellers, and personally I think her latest novel is even better. West Indian-born Odelle lands a job at a London art institute in 1967. Her friend, Lawrie, has a painting he thinks the institute might be interested in, but Odelle’s boss seems to know more about the picture than she’s willing to admit. Back in 1936, Olive is attempting to hide her artistic talents from her father, while building a life for herself in Spain. A brilliant portrayal of forging one’s identity in a foreign country.

It’s 1940 and Poland is under occupation. Seventeen year old Anna is forced to leave her home near Krakow to work on an Austrian farm, where she is little more than a slave. But she finds solace, friendship and love amongst her fellow workers, even as the situation they find themselves in becomes progressively harder. The author’s parents were Polish refugees and survivors of Stalin’s labour camps, and this personal connection certainly comes across in this poignant tale.

The Harrowing – James Aitcheson

The Farm at the Edge of the World – Sarah Vaughan

It’s 1066 and a Norman army is marching through England, destroying anyone and anything in their path. Five travellers are fleeing to the last Saxon stronghold, but will they reach it in time, and is it just the Normans they’re running from? There’s action scenes aplenty, interspersed with the individual stories of the five travellers – a servant, a lady, a priest, a warrior and a minstrel. Aitcheson has clearly done his homework on this era, and also manages to create characters that are every bit as human and flawed as their modern-day counterparts.

Let Me Tell You About A Man I Knew – Susan Fletcher Jeanne Trabuc is a dutiful wife and mother, but her sons have left home and the boredom and loneliness of life in rural Provence in the 1880s are settling over her in a quiet depression. So when a new patient arrives at the asylum that her husband runs, Jeanne can’t resist reaching out to him. An artist, with wild red hair, selfmutilated ear and attitude so different to anyone she knows, he has the power to reawaken the spark within Jeanne that she’s subdued for so long. A beautiful, fictional reimagining of Vincent Van Gogh’s time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole institution.

Will and Alice are evacuated to a Cornish farm to escape war-torn London. There they find safety, although it’s not the picture-postcard life they may have imagined. Friendship between Will and the farmer’s daughter Maggie blossoms into love, but a lie will change things between the three forever. Seventy years on, Alice wants to atone, but is it too late to make amends? An enjoyable story of love, friendship and how sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.

The Plague Charmer – Karen Maitland It’s 1361 and plague is once more stealing through England. In its wake is an even deadlier curse – fear. As neighbours turn against each other and hysteria sweeps the nation, can Sara protect her family? Up in the manor house, 16 year old Christina and her secret baby are hiding from the world, waiting to see whether her abusive husband will come home from France and claim the child. With a long cast of characters, and plenty of plot twists and turns, The Plague Charmer could well stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

In the north-west corner of Tenerife, the Teno Rural Park may not be as famous as Teide or Anaga but this six million year old volcanic range casts a magic spell on anyone who discovers it. Covering just over 8,000 hectares above the lovely village of Buenavista del Norte (meaning ‘nice view’), it climbs to over 1,300 metres at Cruz de Gala, much of it along a windswept ribbon of road with glorious mountain and ocean views.

gorges and cliffs created by ancient lava flows which left in their wake a rich variety of ecosystems. There are all sorts of endemic plants, laurel forest, succulents such as the candle-like spurge which grows the size of a small tree, coastal thistles, palm, dragon trees and myriad grasses and wild flowers. Hawks, kestrels and falcons hover high above, great colonies of pigeons gather in the forest and if you’re lucky, you might just spot a rare native lizard basking on the stones.

Traditions remain strong in these rural heartlands where farmers toil on terraces carved into the slopes and old folks still weave baskets and palm leaf hats. Others have joined the burgeoning tourist trade and a few rustic inns pop up along the road, serving tiny Canarian potatoes eaten with mojo sauce, meat balls, cod, goat’s cheese or honey-based desserts.

At around 700 metres, the road reaches the mountain village of Masca, the Machu Picchu of Tenerife, they say, and when you set eyes on the rocky amphitheatre towering all around and the razor sharp peak guarding the entrance to the gorge, it’s easy to understand. Draped in bougainvillaea, clinging to a knoll sprinkled with palms and orange trees, it’s a pretty little place, home to barely 100 but attracting ramblers and visitors alike, with a shaded square and steep cobbled lanes leading down to the viewpoint over the gorge. The Atlantic beckons far below, deep blue in the sunshine, but the trail plunging down the ravine is a two to three hour challenge: jumping from rock to rock (and no room for a shepherd’s leap), tackling loose lava grit, boulders, streams, here a flimsy bridge, there a waterfall where you wish you could stop, but there is no turning back. Finally, hot and tired but smiling, hikers emerge on a small sandy beach but exploring the rich ocean life is best left for another time. The beach is totally isolated and the only escape is back up the ravine or a boat ride to the majestic cliffs of Los Gigantes along the coast on the edge of the Park. Meanwhile, on the westernmost tip of this most popular Canary island, the Teno lighthouse offers yet more spectacular views right off the beaten track.

In these green bucolic hills, every bend of the road reveals something new, a colourful Guanche hamlet clinging to a slope, a vineyard or two, a row of prickly pear, a fabulous viewpoint where deserted trails head into the mountains suspended between ocean and sky. There you might catch a glimpse of the mighty Mount Teide rising in the distance, the highest point on the island, or come across a young man practising his shepherd’s leap, clutching a long heavy pole to bounce like a goat from rock to rock. In days gone by, it was the only way to keep up with your flock; today it’s a competitive sport which keeps the skill alive.

What Benefits and Concessions

ARE YOU ENTITLED TO IN LATER LIFE?

As you grow older, you become entitled to certain age-related public benefits and concessions that can help with day-to-day living. The most obvious is the state retirement pension, but what are the other less well-known top-ups and concessions that might be available?

We undertake any work around the House & Home We provide a reliable & friendly service at a competitive price All our work is fully insured and guaranteed Established for over 30 Years

Although pension credit is a well-established benefit, not everyone realises they are eligible to claim it, so it’s worth checking whether you’re missing out on this valuable supplement to your state pension.

Visit our website to view photos of some of our latest work

Additionally, there may be local authority concessions available in the area where you live - for adult education or fitness classes, for example. Here are some of the benefits that you might be missing out on, plus a brief guide as to the current eligibility criteria.

Pension credit There are two elements to pension credit – Guarantee Credit which guarantees a minimum income of £155.60 if you’re single, and £237.55 for couples. The second element, Savings Credit, is for people who have saved a small amount towards their retirement. Single people and couples could receive up to £13.07 and £14.75 of Savings Credit per week respectively. You may be entitled to one or both elements if you’ve reached state pension age, and are on a low income.

Attendance Allowance Attendance Allowance is a benefit available to people aged 65 or older, who have care needs at home. You don’t have to receive professional care to be eligible for this benefit, and it’s often the case that a care-provider is a spouse or family member. There are two different rates available, depending on the level of care needed: • Lower rate: £55.10 per week • Higher rate: £82.30 per week People who claim the lower rate often need help with washing and dressing, and the higher rate reflects greater care needs during the day and night.

Carer’s Allowance If you care for someone for 35 hours a week or more, and they are in receipt of certain benefits, you could get Carer’s Allowance at a weekly rate of £62.10. If you’re eligible, you will also automatically receive National Insurance credits. It’s worth noting that Carer’s Allowance can affect other benefits that you and the person you are caring for receive, so you should factor in the possibility that these may reduce or be taken away.

You can receive between £100 and £300 from the government to help with your winter heating bills. To qualify for the winter payment this year, you need to have been born before 5th May 1953. Once you’ve claimed, you should receive the payment automatically between November and December in future years.

SHAW CLEAN

TV licence

Superb Cleaning

You can apply for a free TV licence if you are aged 75 and over. The government also offers concessions to older people in residential care, and the cost for a licence in these circumstances is £7.50.

Public transport There are various concessions available for older people using public transport. Both men and women are entitled to a bus pass at the female state pension age, giving free off-peak travel on local buses.

Prescriptions Those aged over 60 are also entitled to free prescriptions and NHS sight tests. You will need to complete the back of your prescription and let the pharmacist know that you’re eligible – you may also need to provide proof of age in this respect. The government website (www.gov.uk) is a good resource for finding out more about these benefits, and you may be able to make a claim for them online.

The Darby Singers

ARE SEEKING A NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR As such we have very strong community links formed over two decades, and in addition to performing in formal concerts we regularly sing for local causes such as residential/nursing homes, fundraising events and Churches etc., free of charge. We also regularly raise money for charities such as the Severn Hospice. We currently rehearse on a Wednesday evening during school term time at the Abraham Darby Academy, Madeley, and as our current MD of 11 years will sadly be leaving us at Christmas, we are desperately seeking someone to take her place in January 2017, as without an MD the choir will fold.

The Darby Singers, a mixed community choir established in1998 are made up of an eclectic bunch of around 35 people who love to sing, and as we were going strong a decade before Gareth Malone made Community Choirs fashionable, we can definitely lay claim to being an 'Original Community Choir'!

Ultimate window cleaning service keeping frames, sills, doors & glass pristine.

Cutting edge technology in the hands of a perfectionist Free clean of fascia, soffit, gutter

If you are interested in applying for the position, please contact us via our Website or Facebook Page: www.thedarbysingers.co.uk www.facebook.com/TheDarbySingers/

LEAFLET DISTRIBUTION

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor The process to establish a separate Muxton Parish Council will take two years, and require the support of a majority of residents following a local ballot. The new Parish would then be in place for the next local elections in 2019. As many of you know I am fully supportive of a Muxton Parish Council, which due to the number of contributing households and low overheads I believe will be one of the most efficient and cost effective Parish Councils in the Borough. Should any resident wish to get involved in the process then please contact me.

Do you have leaflets or flyers that you would like delivered with this magazine?

The new outdoor gym is proving to be very popular, not only with Muxton residents but from neighbouring areas as well. People of all ages are using the equipment and the new play equipment. Hopefully this level of usage will continue during the Autumn.

Prices from £40 per 1000 WE CAN ALSO DESIGN AND PRINT THEM FOR YOU TOO! For further details please contact

Dealing with somebody who has recently lost a loved one can leave you literally lost for words. You know what it’s like: you worry about what to say and how to say it, and often end up saying nothing at all. Bereavement is a sensitive subject and many of us feel that we simply aren’t emotionally equipped to deal with it. Unfortunately our fear of saying the wrong thing often means that we stop communicating with the grieving person altogether, leaving them without the comfort and support they so desperately need.

People experience grief in different ways: in addition to an overwhelming sense of sadness, a bereaved person may struggle with a number of complex and frightening feelings, including depression, anger and guilt, leading to a rollercoaster of highs, lows and unexpected setbacks. Close friends or relatives may find themselves in the firing line at this time, but it’s important not to take these outbursts personally.

There are no orderly, predictable stages for the grieving process and there is no set timetable for recovery. The bereaved person may behave in uncharacteristic ways as they grieve, for instance, they may choose to sleep in another bed, avoid certain parts of the house or refuse to move personal items that belonged to their loved one, even after months or years have passed.

Why it’s important to listen Patience is key when dealing with bereavement. Just by providing a supportive and undemanding presence, you will let your friend or relative know you care. Everybody worries about what to say, but there’s no need for you to give advice or come up with answers just as long as you are there for the person in question. Dr Bill Webster from the organisation Grief Journey (www.griefjourney.com) points out that at times of stress people may be barely aware of what you are doing and saying anyway. He goes on to quote the famous author Maya Angelou: “People may not remember what you do, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” It’s more important to know how to listen. Let the bereaved person know that he or she has permission to talk about their loss. If the deceased’s name comes up, don’t be afraid to speak openly about them.

Opening up a dialogue Asking questions such as “How are you feeling today?” or “Do you feel like talking?” is better than trying to lead the discussion: you should never try to force someone to open up if they don’t want to. Encourage your bereaved friend or relative to talk about their positive memories of the person who has died. Remembering and celebrating the good times can help to ease the immediate

pain of loss. Accept and acknowledge every shade of emotion – from silence to shouting and tears – but don’t judge or try to snap them out of it. It’s vital that a bereaved person should feel free to express their feelings without fear of argument or criticism. A squeeze of the hand or a reassuring hug at times of high emotion is all that’s needed to show support. You may find that they repeat the same story over and over again, in minute detail. This may, of course, relate to their loved one’s death. If that’s difficult to hear, try not to over-react: they may stop talking because they are worried about upsetting you. It’s fine to share your own experiences of bereavement if you think that will help, but don’t push them to take on your coping strategies, as the methods you’ve found helpful may not work for somebody else. It’s always better to support people to find their own way of dealing with loss rather than impose a different viewpoint.

Taking a practical approach Finally, remember that someone who has lost a loved one will inevitably have responsibilities that relate to the death. Duties may include acting as legal executor, clearing up the deceased’s possessions and maybe even selling a property. If you’re able to lend a hand with practical things, you’re more likely to have your help accepted if you make a specific offer. Although it may make us feel good to say things like: “If there’s anything you want, you only have to ask”, we all know that such a generalised offer rarely results in a request for help. “Shall I go through his files for you?” or “Would you like me to come with you when you visit the undertaker?” are simple, direct questions that are more likely to be taken up. There’s no blueprint for dealing with grief: because everyone experiences the shock of loss in a different way, there can be no absolute rules to guide us. Bereavement counsellor Dr Bill Webster sums it up perfectly when he says: “You can’t fix anything, but you can make a difference, and that’s really what it’s all about.”

Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.

...add a dash of… Quality and Value

All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.

…then a big chunk of…

Ownership and Responsibility

Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.

...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
