Ensuring your furnace is working properly will keep you warm through the winter and lower your heating bills. This can be a do-it-yourself job, or better yet, have it done thoroughly by a professional. Air filters can be checked once a month. A good rule of thumb is to pull out the filter and hold it up to a light – if you can see the outline of the light, the filter should be OK. If not, time to replace.
2. PREPARE YOUR FIREPLACE
Using heavier curtains will help to reduce heat loss through your windows or glass doors. Open them during the day to allow the sunlight to warm the room, and close them at night to keep the heat in.
4. AUTOMATE YOUR THERMOSTAT
Programming your thermostat is a great way to reduce your heating bills. Have the temperature go down a few degrees while you sleep, and then kick back in before it is time to wake up. If you’re out of the house for an extended period, maintain the temperature above 12C or 55F in order to keep anything from freezing.
5. CHECK WINDOWS & DOORS FOR DRAFTS
Inspect all your windows and doors, and look for any cracked or broken glass. Use a lit incense stick to check for drafts, and fix them by sealing with caulking, plastic, weather guards or a door sweep.

Ensuring your furnace is working properly will keep you warm through the winter and lower your heating bills. This can be a do-it-yourself job, or better yet, have it done thoroughly by a professional. Air filters can be checked once a month. A good rule of thumb is to pull out the filter and hold it up to a light – if you can see the outline of the light, the filter should be OK. If not, time to replace.
2. PREPARE YOUR FIREPLACE
Using heavier curtains will help to reduce heat loss through your windows or glass doors. Open them during the day to allow the sunlight to warm the room, and close them at night to keep the heat in.
4. AUTOMATE YOUR THERMOSTAT
Programming your thermostat is a great way to reduce your heating bills. Have the temperature go down a few degrees while you sleep, and then kick back in before it is time to wake up. If you’re out of the house for an extended period, maintain the temperature above 12C or 55F in order to keep anything from freezing.
5. CHECK WINDOWS & DOORS FOR DRAFTS
Inspect all your windows and doors, and look for any cracked or broken glass. Use a lit incense stick to check for drafts, and fix them by sealing with caulking, plastic, weather guards or a door sweep.
