Unit

Learners must give their own examples. It is important that they go through the thought process – allow them to think of their own examples. Try to not help them, but you may guide them if they really need help; then let them think of more of their own examples.

1. 2.

Now that you have given your own examples, have another look at the number sentences shown above. What do you observe? Complete the sentences below.

When a number is subtracted from itself, the answer is 0.

When a number is added and then that same number is subtracted, you will get the number that you started with.

Pairs of equivalent number sentences The word ‘equivalent’ means that something is equal to something else or has the same value as something else.

Equivalent means equal to

Next you will ensure that two number sentences are equivalent and not merely a number sentence with an equivalent answer. Look at the examples below: Example 1 Number sentence 1: 36 + 13

You may use any of the methods in this unit to find the number sentence’s equivalent answer. Answer to number sentence 1: 49 Number sentence 2: 62 – 13

The equivalent answer of this number sentence is 49.

Do you see that both number sentences have the same answer? This means that the two number sentences are also the same, which means we can say that the two number sentences are equivalent. Number sentence 1 = Number sentence 2 36 + 13 = 62 – 13
