blissful beaches

The small village of Nefyn, on the isolated north coast of the Llŷn Peninsula, has a long, sandy bay, sheltered by the beautiful Nefyn Headland, and backed by steep slopes. Nefyn Beach itself is something of a hidden gem, known for its clear blue waters along with stunning views of the bay, and the distant three peaks of The Rival Mountains (Yr Eifl) to the east. The beach is predominantly sandy, with some pebbles and a number of picturesque, whitewashed cottages which huddle towards the western end of the bay.

Dogs are allowed on the eastern side of the beach (opposite end to harbour) from the slipway. The rest of the beach has a dog ban from 1st April to 30th September.

Access to the beach from the village is down Lon Y Traeth, a steep track, at the end of which is a car park.

Public toilets in the car park.

morfa nefyn (porthdinllaen)

DESCRIPTION

Porthdinllaen beach is one for the bucket list when visiting Nature's Point! The sweeping sandy bay is sheltered by the headland (which also doubles up as the iconic Nefyn Golf Course) and is accessible only on foot, making it a truly special spot. One of the best ways to take in the spectacular scenery is from the seats outside the world-renowned Ty Coch Inn ('Red House') right on the waterfront!

PET FRIENDLY PARKING FACILITIES

Dogs welcome all year.

Parking available at the National Trust car park at Morfa Nefyn, with access via the beach stairs or Nefyn Golf Club.

Food available from the Ty Coch Inn, public toilets and information centre in the National Trust car park.

whistling sands (porth oer)

DESCRIPTION

Porth Oer Beach is an exceptionally pretty beach on the north coast of the Llŷn Peninsula. Visitors prepared to make the trek along the path from the National Trust car park will be rewarded with a delightful crescent of pale sand and lovely views. The beach is backed by grassy cliffs and fields of grazing livestock and there are a number of interesting walks nearby. If you’re wondering why it’s also known as Whistling Sands Beach, come here during a dry spell and you’ll notice the sand making a distinct squeaking noise as you walk over it. This phenomenon is caused by the unusual shape of the sand grains here and this is apparently only one of two beaches in Europe where this effect can be observed.

PET FRIENDLY PARKING FACILITIES

Dog not allowed on this beach between 1st April & 30th September.

Parking available at the National Trust car park at the top of the hill.

During the summer season there is a small shop open on the beach. Public toilets available in the National Trust car park.

DESCRIPTION

Visitors can park in the Abersoch Golf Club beach car park 365 days of the year, for a small tariff payable either by cash or via the 'paybyphone' system.

Toilets available in the beach car park, with cafés and shops available nearby.

llanbedrog

DESCRIPTION

You can expect vast swathes of golden sands that give way to shallow seas that are ideal for swimming in the warmer months. The beach is understandably popular with families and, in addition to sheltered bathing waters, younger visitors can get a National Trust “Family Fun Adventure Pack” upon entering the car park at the end of the beach. Here you will find a range of beach themed activities including leaf trails and wildlife games. Nature enthusiasts will also find plenty to interest them at Llanbedrog Beach as the sands are the home of birds like oyster catchers as well as curlews which wander the beach looking for food. Just off the main beach you will find winding paths that lead to lush woodlands and heaths along the headland. One of the best walks from Llanbedrog Beach includes the ramble up to Mynydd Tir y Cwmwd to the famous Tin Man sculpture which affords stunning vistas back over the wider Cardigan Bay. One of the signature features of Llanbedrog are its colourful seaside beach huts dotted along the coastline.

PET FRIENDLY PARKING FACILITIES

Dogs are welcome all year round.

National Trust car park available at the top of the beach.

Llanbedrog Beach also has a range of amenities that make it easy to use and you will find a cafe here as well as disabled access and toilets.

porth towyn

DESCRIPTION

Porth Towyn Beach is located near the small village of Tudweiliog, on the northern coast of the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula. This is one of the more remote beaches in the area, but also one of the loveliest. The beach itself is a small bay flanked and backed by gently sloping grassy cliffs. These provide enough shelter from the wind, but the beach is also exposed enough to pick up some surf. The sand at Porth Towyn ‘squeaks’ when you tread on it, as it does at its more famous neighbour, Whistling Sands.

PET FRIENDLY PARKING FACILITIES

Dogs are not allowed on the beach between 1st April and 30th September – inclusive.

There are various parking spots nearby, including at the farm, but it’s often easier just to park in Tudweiliog village and make the 10 minute walk down to the beach.

There is a beautiful homeware shop at the top of the beach; 'Cwt Tatws', and a small farm where the car park is located.

hell's mouth (porth neigwl)

DESCRIPTION

This gently shelved pebble beach, which stretches for around 4 miles in length, is flanked by craggy headlands. At low tide a wide expanse of sand is revealed. The strong winds here, and often sizeable waves, mean swimming can be quite risky, but the bay attracts experienced surfers and kayakers, who come to Porth Neigwl precisely for these sea conditions. If you are more inclined towards land-based activities then there are plenty of good walks in the area.

PET FRIENDLY PARKING FACILITIES

Dogs are allowed on the beach, although no dog bins are provided.

Heading west from Llanengan, there is a small car park, from which a well-maintained path leads down to the beach, approximately 200 metres away.

There are no facilities at the beach itself, although the small village of Llanengan, about half a mile away, has a pub which serves food.

01625 416430 | INFO@TOGETHERTRAVEL.CO.UK | WWW.TOGETHERTRAVEL.CO.UK

DESCRIPTION

On Aberdaron Beach itself, you will find soft sand that is dotted with large rocks and limpid pools that make a great spot to search for aquatic life. The beach is also enclosed by imposing headlands that mean you are sheltered from most winds. At both ends of Aberdaron Beach you will find mysterious sea caves that you can explore and there are tracks that lead to several smaller beaches off the main strip.

PET FRIENDLY PARKING & FACILITIES

The beach between the river and the church has a dog ban from 1st April to 30th September. At low tide there is plenty of space to either side for dogs to have a run.

The beach is known as a good family beach, and in addition to disabled access you will also find plenty of car parking options, some shops, and a few cafés scattered around close to the main village.

The Cadwaladers Ice Cream story began in 1927, where the Cadwaladers family made and sold their secret recipe vanilla ice cream, from the window of the Criccieth general store.

Nowadays they make too much ice cream to make it in the shop window but it’s still made in Wales and the recipe is still a closely guarded secret made from locally produced ingredients with the same creamy and unique taste.

garn boduan walk

DESCRIPTION

Garn Boduan is a prominent hill which sits above Nefyn on the north coast of the Llŷn Peninsula. It is only 280m high but the summit provides a splendid vantage point from which you can soak up the wonders of the Lleyn landscape, from Yr Eifl to the north east and across the southern flatlands of the peninsula and back round to Carn Fadryn.

Although not particularly apparent from below, the summit plateau is quite extensive. This unique geographical feature made it an obvious place of retreat during wars or invasions. There are widespread remains of an Iron Age or Dark Age provenance to be found here. The hill fort feature is over 10 hectares and within it hundreds of hut circles can be seen.

A straight up and down ascent will suit those lacking in time. However, if you care to linger a while, a more satisfying circuit can be done by dropping off the south eastern flank and looping round to the north. Here you can cut back across the wooded slopes of Mynydd Nefyn.

APPROACH

TERRAIN

Nefyn is the best starting point; there is a small car park in the centre of the village.

Mostly good footpaths, although rocky in places.

yr eifl walk

DESCRIPTION

The distinctive profile of Yr Eifl is a key part of the Llŷn landscape. The peaks really stand out from a distance; particularly when viewed from the beaches along the south west coast of Anglesey. The pyramidlike summits also dominate the landscape when viewed from the south and west. The main Yr Eifl summit is 564m, but this seems to be exaggerated by its closeness to the coast – the drop off from its northern satellite peak into the sea is very severe indeed.

A circular walk from Trefor takes you along the coastal footpath above the shale sea cliff of Trwyn y Tal, before striking upwards by the side of the large quarry to reach the summit area. The summit vista is stunning and well worth the effort required to work up through all those contour lines. A detour to the nearby hill fort on Tre’r Ceiri is a must; here you will find dry stone walls and hut circles which date from the late Iron Age.

A much less strenuous route option is to start from Llithfaen on the southwest side of the hill. This has the advantage of a 200m high starting point, but on the downside it does miss out on some of the dramatic landscape features on the Trefor side.

APPROACH

TERRAIN

There is a car park (and toilets) close to the harbour in Trefor. There is also some roadside parking possible ion the eastern side of Llithfaen.

Mostly good tracks and footpaths, but some rough terrain in places.

llŷn maritime museum

DISCOVER THE MARITIME HERITAGE AND HISTORY OF THE LL Ŷ N PENINSULA

DESCRIPTION

St Mary’s Church is a grade II listed building located in the oldest part of the town and is an important part of the local heritage. The sailing ship weather vane on the bell tower of the Old Church serves as a reminder of the area’s ancient maritime tradition.

The maritime heritage of Llŷn extends from the days of the early Celtic Saints, Edward I, the days of pirates and smugglers on the coast, maritime trading, tragic wrecks to rescues by lifeboat crews. It is an important part of the local heritage and the character of the area. Many villages on the Llŷn owe their existence to the maritime trade and have bred generations of seamen and sailors who delivered their cargo to all corners of the earth. Each community has its own distinctive history and it is important to capture this history and make it available to all.
