The Roman conquest dramatically changed life in much of Britain, but not everyone appreciated their arrival. Fill in the missing words to start our journey to the edge of the Empire…

British history changed forever in AD 43 when soldiers from the Roman landed in southern Britain and quickly conquered the south east before expanding west and north with their army.

Some tribes welcomed the Romans, who brought wealth, wine and writing, built towns with stone houses and villas, as well as miles of roads. But others didn’t, including Queen of the Iceni tribe. She led a huge rebellion in AD 61, burning London, Colchester and St Albans, but was eventually defeated at the Battle of Watling Street.

The Romans couldn’t conquer all of Britain. The tribes in fought hard against them, and so in AD 122 the Emperor ordered a wall to be built which separated Roman Britain from the north. Much of it still stands today.

The Romans began to withdraw troops from Britain to fight invasions in Italy, and by Roman rule had ended after four centuries.

HOW TO PLAY

It’s AD 200 and you’ve been sent to Britain to deliver an important message to the commander at Chesters Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall. The soldiers at the port of Richborough in Kent have a horse and supplies waiting for you, but have you got what it takes to complete the epic journey along the Roman roads, avoiding the hazards along the way? There are four essential rest stops en-route (in white), so you must stop at each of these and follow the instructions on your next go to continue your journey north. To get started, challenge one or more friends and roll the dice to see who goes first (highest wins). May the gods shine down on you!

A PLACE 8 TO LIVE?

The Wall included around 250 army bases of different types. At every mile there was a milecastle, where soldiers guarded a gate through the wall, and there were tall turrets at regular intervals to keep watch. There were also 15 large forts where garrisons of up to 1,000 soldiers lived.

The soldiers worked in groups of about 80 men called Centuries. Once they had completed a short section of the Wall, they recorded their achievement on one of the Wall’s stones. This inscription listed which century they belonged to and the person in charge. Lots of these stones were found and some are now kept at Chesters Roman Fort.

3 MAKING THE WALL

The soldiers dug a shallow trench and placed large stones in it to create a base. Then they laid rectangular stones in rows stuck together with mortar to make the front and rear faces. Between them, a core was made of smaller stones and mortar. The builders were careful to keep the wall straight and level so it was strong and stable. How long did it take to build Hadrian’s Wall?

Ahteha and Vellibia are sisters, and live with their dad, the town’s shoemaker, in Coria (now Corbridge) and spend a lot of time helping him to cut leather to make shoes. They’ve been very busy because a turma, a Roman cavalry unit, are in town and many of the soldiers want new shoes.

He finishes the last pair for the turma’s decurion.

He hands them to the girls and tells them to deliver them to him before the soldiers leave to go to Hadrian’s Wall.

What was Birdoswald?

Birdoswald was a Roman Fort, built around 1,800 years ago along Hadrian’s Wall. During the 3rd and 4th centuries the fort was occupied by the Dacians, who travelled with the Roman army from modern day Romania. During this time, repairs and rebuilding took place in the fort, which contained barracks for the soldiers, a command centre (Principia), granaries to store food and four gates.

Just outside the walls was a vicus, where civilians lived. After the Romans left Britain the fort continued to be used by the people of Birdoswald. In the 16th century, a strong farmhouse was built to protect against border raiders.

Waiting room

The prefect was in charge of a garrison of 800 soldiers, so he needed to hold meetings with his officers and other visitors.

They had to wait in this room until he was ready to see them.

Slave labour

Some slaves are preparing food for the dinner party in the kitchen next door to the dining room. Slaves were owned by the prefect and did cooking, chores and administrative work.

Just outside the walls was a vicus, where civilians lived. After the Romans left Britain the fort continued to be used by the people of Birdoswald. In the 16th century, a strong farmhouse was built to protect against border raiders.

Eat like an Emperor Rich Romans loved exotic food like flamingo or stuffed dormice. Eat something that you haven’t tried before so that you can show off to your friends.

Dress up Many women in the imperial family made their own clothes.

Design an outfit for yourself and make sure to wear as much sparkly jewellery as you can!

Go on a march People in the imperial family often had to be soldiers. Plan a walk around your neighbourhood with an adult or set up a camp in your garden. What would your marching rations be?

Build a palace Augustus’s palace was up on one of the highest hills.
