BEHIND THE SCENES A Letter from the President

Hello again friends, What a wonderful summer we’ve had! For those of you who know me, you know I LOVE the lake and spending the summer with my babies. As autumn swiftly approaches, my schedule is becoming filled. From the beginning of November until the end of May IMC Concerts will be going full throttle, so summertime is my time to catch up on much needed rest, relaxation, and being with my kids. They are truly the joy that fuels my passion. I am very thankful that I have a dream job that allows me to be home nearly all summer with my kids and enjoy spending precious time with them. This season has been much needed for me and I am refreshed. During the summer, it is also my time to brainstorm and set goals for the company. It is always fun to explore new opportunities that will broaden our reach for IMC and this great music we all know as Southern Gospel. Some of the largest concerts and events we have ever experienced have taken place this year and our plans for 2015 are going to be even bigger! Gospel music is still very much alive and well! We are also very excited about our new venture into a co-ownership of the multi award winning record company, StowTown Records®. In this issue you will enjoy a feature story about this great company and our future goals for it. Also included in this issue are the tour dates for my two favorite exclusive events that we host, the Cathedrals Family Reunion® and the Jubilee Christmas Tour®. These two tours have become the highlight of our company. You MUST make plans to attend one of these! Another great last minute addition to our summer schedule was the inaugural Gospel Music Hymn Sing® hosted by Gerald Wolfe. The concept for this fabulous event had been in the works for quite some time. It was extremely exciting to see the inaugural concert sell COMPLETELY out a full month in advance. You will read more about that in this issue as well. We are working now to schedule a Gospel Music Hymn Sing® tour in 2015! In closing, I ask that you please continue to pray for our company as we grow and expand. It is our sincere hope to keep this great music alive and well for years to come. Our staff and team are very thankful for each of you who love, support, and encourage IMC®. Telling the Story, Landon C. Beene

A NEW PARTNERSHIP BY: VERONICA BURNISTON

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul writes about the church as the body of Christ, every part holding a specific and vital role in the united well-being of the entire body. As he describes it in 1 Corinthians 13:20: “There are many parts, but one body.”

(L TO R): LANDON BEENE, ERNIE HAASE, WAYNE HAUN

4 | SUMMER 2014

This concept of a unified force or combined effort toward a worthy goal frequently appears today in numerous areas of life. Whether it be within the family, between friends or between co-workers, the truth in Paul’s words remains the same: separate parts function, but when united the body thrives.

– 1 Corinthians 13:20

Within the last three months, Innovative Management Consulting (IMC) and StowTown Records (STR) have decided to adopt this concept, to unify two very successful groups into one creative powerhouse for Gospel Music.

“StowTown Records was created [to be] a musical home for a wonderful world of ‘diverse’ artists,” Haase commented, “a wonderful home that celebrates each other’s achievements and cheers one another to flourish.”

In May 2014 IMC and STR publicly announced their new partnership, a promising combination of talent, ambition, and godly pursuit.

Over the past few years, IMC and STR have been “heavily involved” with one another on numerous occasions. Tribute Media Source, a leading design firm owned by Landon Beene, has also worked closely with STR for several years, designing artwork for CDs, merchandise, and marketing.

Founded in 2011 by Ernie Haase of Ernie Haase & Signature Sound and Wayne Haun, a prestigious producer in gospel music with a hand also in the secular music industry, StowTown Records is an independent label that has grown tremendously since its birth three years ago. Holding an exclusive distribution deal with Provident/Sony Distribution, STR’s music reaches audiences around the world, creating ample opportunities for the artists to connect with their fans worldwide. With an ever-growing list of amazing gospel groups and soloists, such as The Perrys, The Cathedrals Family Reunion®, Devin McGlamery, The Collingsworth Family, Triumphant Quartet, and, most recently, the awardwinning female-soloist TaRanda Greene, as well as the young and talented new group The Erwins, it comes as no surprise that STR nurtures a diverse and creative community within the southern gospel genre.

According to Haase, “IMC (Landon and Nate) have been behind the scenes all along, dreaming with STR, [doing everything] from developing the artwork to marketing to manufacturing our CDs and DVDs...So, it was a natural fit to partner and spread our wings ‘together’ to the variety of music that is out there.” Now as a unified body, the two companies are weaving together a group of people with unique talents and one purpose: to clearly and creatively deliver “the message of Jesus and His redeeming love” to the world. Led by four partners (Landon Beene, Nate Goble, Ernie Haase, and Wayne Haun), IMC and STR are creating a SUMMER 2014 | 5

(TOP TO BOTTOM): STOWTOWN AND TRIUMPHANT QUARTET; STOWTOWN AND TARANDA GREENE; STOWTOWN AND THE ERWINS

formidable, synergetic partnership that not only encourages diversity with its artists but also establishes a firm platform for budding gospel singers and groups emerging onto the music scene. “[STR and IMC] have the opportunity to be a platform for our artists to break and boost their careers,” Haase said, reflecting on the recent partnership. “From writing the songs, producing the songs, marketing the projects and providing the markets to perform the music in, it all makes for a 360 degree of developing and will hopefully lift our genre of music (Southern Gospel) to new heights.” After signing Triumphant Quartet in June, TaRanda Greene under the label in late July and The Erwins in early August, Landon Beene emphasized that the addition of these gifted gospel artists was only the beginning of IMC’s & STR’s fresh and innovative approach to music and marketing. 6 | SUMMER 2014

“The diversity of what we’re building is vital,” Landon Beene recounted in a phone interview. “[Triumphant Quartet] is the top traditional male quartet, [The Erwins] are a young family group coming on the scene, while TaRanda is a renowned female soloist who is heavily focused in the large church atmosphere and choral arrangements.” Desiring a more active role in the overall development of the artists, IMC and STR are focusing on the development of new, unique approaches with Christian music promotion through social media, e.g. concert videos, a centralized publication that moves between markets (Gospel Music Quarterly), and an internal structure of promotions at every event, concert, or cruise to help further promote future gospel events and festivals. Pulling so many “great minds” together under one worthwhile pursuit, IMC and STR keep their eyes on the

present as well as the future, hoping to make a positive and fruitful mark in the southern gospel music genre. “Our dream is simple,” Haase said, “hand this music to the next generation in a better condition than we found it...God used this music to change our lives. We’ve made a living off this music, provided for our children, met wonderful life long friends all because of this music. We hear testimonies every night from fans saying how this music changed their lives. I just smile and say, ‘I know–me too!’” Remarkable things begin to happen when people from various backgrounds with an assortment of God-given talents gather together under a single purpose: to further the gospel of Christ. The twelve apostles, for example, came from different professions, families, and locations; however, Jesus drew them together, instructed them, loved them, and sent them into the world to do the same. During his time on earth, Jesus created a body of believers from a ragtag group of men and women, some of whom were fishermen, tax collectors, foreigners, cripples, prostitutes, some educated, some not. One thread at a time, Jesus wove a vibrant and beautifully complete tapestry out of the lives of these devoted men and women, leaving an eternal example of unity for the church to study and imitate. Through their new partnership, IMC and STR are also gathering the thread and preparing to weave a tapestry of their own, a tapestry that speaks of creativity, unity, and redeeming love. In the end, Haase remarked, “It’s all about teamwork. The apostle Paul said it best when he said we are all different parts of ONE body. And, that is what we are building together, a body of music that builds the body of Christ.”

This past May, Southern Gospel music filled the ears and hearts of Canadians and Americans alike at the annual Praisefest Niagara Falls® Event in Ontario, Canada. Taking place annually in the Scotia Bank Convention Centre in Niagara, the Niagara Falls Event showcases not only the familiar talent of numerous American gospel groups but also the “Best of Ontario,” introducing several talented Canadian groups to a wider range of audience. This year’s event attracted an even larger audience than the previous year and hosted a variety of exceptional performances, including Legacy Five, the Hoppers, Greater Vision, Tim Lovelace, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, TaRanda Greene, the Collingsworth Family, and many more. In addition, a number of excellent Canadian gospel groups performed at the event, including the Torchmen Quartet and the gospel group Advocate. According to Landon Beene, the President of Innovative Management Consulting (IMC), each session of the Niagara Falls event begins with artist-led congregational singing followed by a mixture of “testimony, a spoken word of encouragement and hope, as well as great moments of comedy.” On Friday morning, Chris Allman of Greater Vision led a Hymn Sing with the audience. After the Hymn Sing, Rodney Griffin delivered a powerful message about forgiveness, which was then followed by the comedian, Tim Lovelace, who “kept [the audience] in tears of laughter” throughout the rest of the session. created an even greater opportunity of fellowship for the artists and fans. “As an artist it’s great to fellowship with all of the other groups...” Mike Moran of the Torchmen Quartet writes, “I am very appreciative that IMC, Landon and Nate, conduct both the weekend concerts and themselves in a way that uplifts our music and our witness for the Lord for whom we do what we do.”

The next morning, Scott Fowler of Legacy Five opened the Saturday session with congregational singing before some of Ontario’s own gospel groups took the stage, delivering the “best of Ontario” to the mixed audience. Hosting this wonderful event in Ontario each year provides ample opportunity to both the local and U.S. audience members. Not only are the locals able to hear some of the most talented U.S. southern gospel groups, but the Americans who attend the event are also given the chance to see the breathtaking Canadian Falls as well as the “picturesque and historic village of Niagara.”

Growing in attendance each year, the Niagara Falls Event continues to attract a variety of fans and artists from all over North America. From the beautifully designed creation of the surrounding landscape to the God-centered worship within the music itself, the Niagara Falls Event is one of the most enriching southern gospel music events of the year. “Scotia Bank Convention Centre is a great setting...It allows not only Ontarians to attend the best gospel music event of the year but also our American friends to cross the border for the event,” D.W. Crutchfield of Advocate notes when recalling this year’s event. “I can’t think of a better spot than Niagara Falls. In the world of Southern Gospel music, The Cathedrals remain one of the most cherished and loved household names on the market. With a rich thirty-five year history and an ever– present international fan base, it was only a matter of time before the sparks of a reunion caught fire and a new era of Cathedrals arose–The Cathedrals Family Reunion®. AKRON, OHIO – 1963 The nationally acclaimed Cathedral Quartet first emerged in 1963 as part of the evangelist Rex Humbard’s Cathedral of Tomorrow Church and television ministry in Akron, Ohio. Started as The Cathedral Trio, which consisted of tenor Bobby Clark, baritone Danny Koker, and lead singer Glen Payne (from The Weatherford Quartet), The Cathedrals quickly gained a following amid churches, and within a year, their growing popularity stirred Humbard to expand the trio into a quartet. As a result of this decision, Humbard inducted George Younce, the bass singer of The Blue Ridge Quartet, into the group and, thus, began the first era of The Cathedral Quartet. 14 | SUMMER 2014

For a handful of successful years, The Cathedrals shared in Humbard’s ministry. In time both Koker and Clark left the quartet to pursue other interests, which opened a door of opportunity for tenor Mack Taunton and baritone/pianist George Amon Webster to join the team. It wasn’t until 1969 that the quartet decided to take their mission from the pulpit to the road. With Humbard’s approval, The Cathedrals kept their name and their new ministry began. In the beginning years of the gospel quartet, The Cathedrals struggled with various setbacks, including financial instability since they no longer received a steady paycheck, and the lack

of a solid fan base since their name tended to correlate them with church quartets rather than the professional gospel group they would one day become. In addition to these obstacles, the quartet underwent numerous changes over its thirty-five year career as some members departed to pursue other callings and new members joined The Cathedrals to share in their God-driven mission. It was in 1999, after George Younce (who had been suffering from kidney failure) and Glen Payne decided it was time to say goodbye to their loving fans, that The Cathedrals set out on their final Farewell Tour. About seven months into the tour, Payne became very ill and was diagnosed with liver cancer. He passed away in October 1999, never finishing the Farewell Tour he and Younce had agreed upon. In a bittersweet yet beautiful closing for the quartet, the Farewell Tour ended in Akron, Ohio–The Cathedrals birthplace–in December 1999. Six years later, at the age of seventy-five, George Younce, one of the last two first-era Cathedrals, passed away at the Akron City Hospital, leaving behind a rich history of music, love, and friendship.

SUMMER 2014 | 15

EIGHT YEARS LATER In November 2013, at the MacGorman Performing Arts Center in Fort Worth, Texas, something amazing happened. That something was the Cathedrals Family Reunion® (CFR). During the two-day sold out event, five members from the Cathedrals Quartet came together on stage: Ernie Haase (Ernie Haase & Signature Sound), Mark Trammell (Mark Trammell Quartet), Scott Fowler (Legacy Five), Danny Funderburk, and Gerald Wolfe (Greater Vision). These five well-known gospel artists performed with their current groups, then joined together for the first time in the history of the quartet and sang some of The Cathedrals’ most popular and loved songs. Gospel fans from all over the world were moved as they witnessed the revival of the legendary quartet and traveled back in time with the artists, remembering the inspiring “patriarchs,” Glen Payne and George Younce, who left a legacy of exceptional gospel music for future generations. AKRON, OHIO – 2014 In the early months of summer 2014, The Cathedrals Family Reunion gathered in Stow, Ohio, where they visited the late George Younce’s gravesite together. While in Stow, the group met at the Younce home to announce (via youtube) that CFR will be “bringing it home” this fall with their “Bringing It Back” tour, which will start in Akron–the place where it all began–in early November.

Similar to the Fort Worth event, each weekend of the CFR tour will include music from each of the artists’ current groups as well the much anticipated Cathedrals Family Reunion performance. In addition, the tour will offer “behind-the-scenes” opportunities for Q&A, the opportunity to tour The Cathedrals’ last tour bus “Silhouette,” “memorabilia displays” and several matinees. The CFR tour will be a much larger tour visiting several cities that will come within 500 miles of anywhere in the United States. This tour will also include Orlando, Denver, Lancaster, Fort Worth and Branson. Tickets are on sale now for Fort Worth and Akron. Tickets for all other locations will go on sale October 6, 2014. Standing under the same roof, in the same kitchen, around the same kitchen island where Younce and Payne had once embraced, deciding it was time to say farewell to their fans all those years ago, CFR ignited a new era of The Cathedrals in Akron, a reunion of songs and souls. “What George and Glen ‘thought’ was the end was just the beginning of another chapter of the greatest quartet to ever grace the stage,” Haase commented in a recent interview. “We hope to make them and their fans VERY PROUD!”

For more information on the upcoming Cathedrals Family Reunion® tour, visit their website at www.CathedralsFamilyReunion.com. To view CFR’s recent announcement video in Akron, go to youtube and type “cathedrals family reunion announcement” into the search bar. After August 4th, the Cathedrals Family Reunion: Past Members Reunite Live in Concert CD and DVD will be available for purchase worldwide through retailers, such as Amazon, iTunes, and www.IMCmusicSTORE. com. The Cathedral Quartet was the most loved gospel quartet of their generation. Their legacy continues with some of today’s most popular gospel artists. Cathedral Quartet Alumni know they have something special in common...they are part of what Glen Payne and George Younce called the CATHEDRAL FAMILY. Scott Fowler, Danny Funderburk, Ernie Haase, Mark Trammell, and Gerald Wolfe traveled with the Cathedrals during the height of the Cathedrals’ popularity. Now these Cathedral Alumni as well as their current groups come together for an unforgettable event, reliving the music and memories from the GOLDEN AGE of the CATHEDRALS.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING... “The recurring thought for me was that George and Glen were the foundation of the group..but never made it just about themselves. They chose young men they felt would “fit” and then they allowed them to grow their talent within a “team” effort. To look on the stage and remember the individuals when they were first “Cathedrals” was gratifying. They had talent. They had drive and were given the opportunity and they earned that trust! The CFR was such a pleasure. Thanks to everyone that made it such a memorable event!” - KENNETH PAYNE (brother to the late Glen Payne)

(L TO R): GREATER VISION IN THE EARLY YEARS; THE CATHEDRALS IN THE EARLY YEARS; MARK TRAMMELL QUARTET; SINGING WITH GOLD CITY AND CHOIR

40 YEARS OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

BY: LYNN MILLS

On August 17, 2014 Mark Trammell will celebrate 40 years in Gospel Music. Mark’s journey began as a student, learning from the industry’s greatest legends how to be a successful musician, singer and man of God. He has sung with the most prestigious groups in the industry, such as The Cathedrals, Kingsmen, Gold City and Greater Vision, and then went on to form his own popular group, The Mark Trammell Trio, which later became The Mark Trammell Quartet. The road he 20 | SUMMER 2014

walked has been a mix of privileges and challenges, trials and blessings…the evidence of God’s faithfulness. On The Mark Trammell Quartet’s new project, Your Walk Talks, Mark sings a song titled God’s Been Faithful. I believe as we take a few moments to reminisce with Mark about the last 40 years, we will find that faithfulness very evident while we watch his life evolve from a dream to a life’s call…

Mark was born and raised in North Little Rock, Arkansas where his father pastored for 52 years. On Sunday mornings he would watch “Singing Time in Dixie” with the Statesmen and “Gospel Singing Jubilee” before they left for church. “As a child I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life,” Mark explains. “Mom and Dad bought me a bass guitar when I was twelve years old and I would play along with the records we had of the Happy Goodman Family, Statesmen, LeFevres, Inspirations and Florida Boys.” A year later he started playing bass with the New Horizons, a part time group from Little Rock. His first professional position came when he was fifteen; he joined the Senators who were based out of Memphis, Tennessee. Mark relates that he was too young to get a driver’s license so he took a Trailways bus back and forth to Memphis every week to catch the group bus. “Very often we would get back late on Sunday night and I would spend the night in a Trailways bus headed back to Little Rock,” says Mark, “Many times on Monday morning Dad would pick me up at the terminal and take me to breakfast and then straight to school. It was tough but I wouldn’t change a thing!” During Mark’s first year with that group he sang on the same program with the Statler Brothers and they became friends. When Mark’s senior year in high school drew near he left the Senators to finish school, but Gospel Music was his first love. So it is no surprise to find that when he had time off, he would ride the bus with his brother Jerry, who was singing with the Florida Boys. It was on one of those trips where Mark met his future wife at an outdoor concert in Mississippi in the pouring down rain! Prior to LaResa and Mark’s marriage in 1978, they saw the Kingsmen in Little Rock. Mark approached Foxy and said, “I understand Mac’s left.” He said, “Yeah. Are you Jerry’s little brother?” Mark replied, “Yes, sir.” “Are you interested in the job?” he asked. Mark answered, “Yes, sir.” Mark was hired on the spot and went to work for the Kingsmen about a month later. It was during the years he played with them that the Kingsmen performed on the south lawn of the White House. Two years later, the position came open to try out for The Cathedrals. “When I went to the Kingsmen office to tell Eldridge Fox that I wanted to try out for them it took me most of the day to get enough courage to do it,” shares Mark. “I didn’t want to hurt him because he had been really good to me and I was grateful for it. Four hours later I finally did. He told me, ‘Son, book a flight to Ohio and I will pay for it. If all goes well, you have my blessing.’” On July 21, 1980 that dream came true. Mark and LaResa moved to Ohio and for a decade Mark traveled and sang with his heroes. While he was with The Cathedrals God allowed him to take part in some amazing things! They recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Pat Boone and Johnny Cash. He performed five times on the Grand Ole Opry and

numerous concerts with the Gaither Vocal Band, won the Favorite Baritone three times from the Singing News Fan Awards and his first Dove Award for producing. Mark and LaResa welcomed their son, Nick, into the world during those years. Mark says he lacked nothing, yet, there came a point when he experienced a level of misery he had never known before. The conviction of the Holy Spirit came upon him – he was lost. The Cathedrals were singing in a Starlight Crusade in Oklahoma and Dr. Eliff preached the message, “Build an Ark and Save Your Home.” The first point of the message was: Before you can do anything for the world you have to settle one question, are you truly saved? Mark says he didn’t sleep that night till about 5:00 AM, then prayed a simple prayer, “Lord, if you’re telling me that I’m lost, let me play golf with that preacher tomorrow.” On July 13, 1988 God allowed him to do that and at the Willow Creek Golf Course, Mark got on his knees alongside Dr. Eliff and asked the Lord to save him, and He did. When God showed him it was time to leave the Cathedrals, it broke his heart. Yet, He had plans for Mark in Morristown, Tennessee where he and Gerald Wolfe would form Greater Vision, and once more God showed Himself faithful on the Trammell’s behalf. “My father in-law paid for first class tickets for LaResa and I to fly from Akron to Knoxville; that was his gift of blessing to us for making the decision to move,” said Mark with that gleam in his eye when he’s getting ready to launch into a story. “However,” he went on, “that flight was delayed and we were switched to another that would take us to Charlotte, NC then Knoxville, TN. Later, we learned that when our original flight landed in Detroit en route to Knoxville it was hit by another plane on the runway, destroying the entire first class section. The people who were sitting in the seats we originally had on that flight were dead, as well as all the other passengers in first class.” God’s been faithful. In the three years Mark stayed with SUMMER 2014 | 21

We still Mark chuckles, “but God was calling me to this area of are a professional Gospel group like I’ve always been a part ministry as well. In October of 1993, I surrendered to God’s of, but there is a portion of the year where we are dedicated will.” When they came home from that trip he had a phone to just encouraging the church.” In twelve years MTQ has call from Tim Riley – Gold City needed a baritone singer. He accepted numerous awards Singer! for producing and two more Favorite Baritone awards from

Now a word from Mark... It has been a joy to spend these last 40 years in Gospel Music, but let me take a moment and share with you the basis on which this journey has come about. Let’s visit 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.” The Greek word for fear is Deilia – it means cowardice, timidity, reluctance. If we are living in that element, we are living beneath the privilege that we have as born again Believers. What are you afraid of ? God does not want us to live in fear; He wants us to live in His power. If we go to the original text for the word power, it is Dunamis – that word means the inexhaustible resource provided to us through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God. If there’s something you’re supposed to be doing for God and you don’t want to do it because you’re afraid, you are gonna’ fail. Twelve years ago I had that same mindset when we started this ministry. God has provided every need that we had. Was I afraid? Was it scary? Yes! Yet, in the midst of the fear I had every confidence that God had called me to it, and God was going to be the one that saw me through the process of seeing a ministry start, grow and flourish. Today, God continues to open doors to places I had never dreamed we’d go. I share that with you to let you know that if God would do it for me; He will do it for you. He also wants us to live in love – Agape. Agape means to exhibit esteem and good will toward others without selfish motivation, doing good without expecting anything in return. Then we come to sound mind and the word Sophronismos – the ability to think clearly in a world that can’t. That ability comes from the divine touch upon our lives. The One who told the waves peace be still…He is still in charge! In July, MTQ welcomed the group’s new bass singer Randy Byrd. After three months and 36 candidates for the position, MTQ is thrilled and collectively feels that Randy is the man for this season of their ministry. Many of you will remember Randy from his recent years with the prestigious Blackwood Brothers Quartet, the miles he logged with the Mike Lefevre Quartet and the Songfellows. Also, The Mark Trammell Quartet’s latest CD Your Walk Talks brings the total number of projects that Mark has recorded to 81! So here’s a question to ponder – Through the years, how many of these recordings have you collected? Let MTQ know by tweeting at them using the hashtag #Markcelebrates40yrs!

BEYOND THE STAGE: An Artist’s Questionnaire BY: MELISSA BRADY

Nick Trammell grew up just beyond the lights of the stage and, as the son of Mark Trammell, legendary baritone for the great Cathedral Quartet, it’s plain to see Southern Gospel music is in his DNA. So it came as no surprise when Nick decided to switch his life’s work from accounting to music. He was born to sing. We already know and love him as Nick Trammell, the singer. Today we get to meet Nick Trammell, the son, husband, father and friend. What is your favorite moment of the day? At home, it’s when my daughter wakes up. On the road, it’s when I start the first track for a concert. If you weren’t a singer, what would you be? My degree is in accounting, so probably something related to that. Which living person do you most admire? There are two people I truly admire. My dad and Dr. Bob Pitman. What words or phrases do you overuse? “Thank you, we’re glad to be here!” What talent would you most like to have? Playing the piano. I never took the lessons seriously when I was younger. That, and strong public speaking skills. If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be? I wouldn’t worry so much. And maybe a little more hair. Are those related? What is your most cherished possession? I have two. The bass guitar that my dad learned how to play on, and a microphone that was used on the final episode of the Gospel Singing Jubilee. 26 | SUMMER 2014

What is your greatest fear? My family being harmed in any way. What is your motto? Do what you love. Do you have a nickname? Not one that anyone has called me to my face :) If you were a color, what would you be? 7. Who is your greatest musical influence? My dad. What is your idea of a perfect day? Any day with my wife and daughter. We like to take her to the zoo, or the aquarium. What makes you laugh? Pat Barker. What is your favorite sound? Hearing “Daddy!” when I come home from the weekend.

(L TO R): NICK WITH WIFE, JESSICA AND DAUGHTER, TESSA; NICK AND TESSA; NICK FISHING IN ALASKA; NICK AND HIS FATHER, MARK TRAMMELL; NICK WITH JESSICA AND TESSA

What does God mean to you? He has been so good to me. I’m blessed far beyond what I deserve. He has given me a beautiful family, and has allowed me to do what I love to do for a living. I can’t be grateful enough.

What do you do to unwind? I enjoy playing golf with Dad or watching sports. When I get home from a trip, I like to be in my back yard with my family, pushing Tessa on her swing, or just sitting in lawn chairs, watching her play.

What is your greatest extravagance? I have an embarrassingly large necktie collection.

What is your favorite song? Glen Payne singing “We Shall See Jesus.”

What books are currently on your nightstand? My Bible and Sound EQ for Dummies

What is your greatest regret? Caring too much about what people thought of me when I was younger. And the doughnut I just ate...

What CD is in your player? An album of kids songs with the name “Tessa” inserted in the lyrics. Help me. If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? Charlie Trammell, Larry Sparks, and Owen Hutcheson. If there was a movie made of your life, what would the title be? I Don’t Get It.

If you could go anywhere, where would you go? A remote location in Alaska to fish. In the summer, of course. What is the first song you ever sang? Dad was preaching a revival in Dyersburg, TN at, Dianne Wilkinson’s home church, and I sang “He Brought Me Through” the first night. I was about 11 or 12.

What is your favorite gift you ever received? Salvation is the greatest of all gifts. I also got a bike with a radio attached to the handlebars when I was 10. That was pretty cool.

What do you consider your greatest achievement? I have been blessed to be a part of, and do some wonderful things in my life. I grew up around some of the most influential, and well known, people in the industry of Gospel music. I’ve been privileged to sing on some of the biggest stages, with some great groups. The thing that I am the most proud of, however, is my family. I have the best parents who raised me in a Christian home, I have an amazing wife, a beautiful daughter, and a son due in October. That is, in my mind, my greatest achievement. They are my support system and my biggest cheerleaders. I could not do what I do without them.

Dog or cat? Dog!

What is the craziest thing that ever happened on tour? What happens on the bus stays on the bus :)

What would you say are the aspects of true friendship? Loving someone in spite of their shortcomings, and being there for them, when no one else is, in their time of need. And chocolate.

AMERICA God shed His grace on thee BY: SCOTT FOWLER

SCOTT FOWLER AND HIS SON

I am NOT proud to be an American. You heard me right. I am not proud to be an American. That’s what 44 percent of American citizens recently said in a pew poll. (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/06/27/ stunner-44-percent-not-proud-to-be-american/). Well let me be clear….I WAS NOT POLLED….BUT I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. Now…am I proud of everything that happens in America? No! Am I proud of some cultural shifts happening in America? No! Am I proud of some of the legislation passed in America? No! Am I proud of the way some Americans act? NO! Am I proud that 44% of Americans are not PROUD to be Americans? No! But am I personally proud to be an American? YES! I don’t want to be anything else. People still flock to America, both legally and illegally because they want what we have. Recently, parents from Central America sent their kids here by the thousands in hopes that they could live in AMERICA! My kids sleep in a warm, dry, safe bed….in AMERICA! I can go to a church of my choice….in AMERICA. If I decide I don’t

like that church anymore, I can leave and go to a different church…in AMERICA. I can sing music about Jesus…. in AMERICA. I can pursue my dreams and aspirations…. in AMERICA! I drink safe water….in AMERICA. I breath clean air…in AMERICA. I get to try to elect leaders of my choice…in AMERICA! When I don’t like what those leaders do, I can criticize them…in AMERICA. I can own a gun…in AMERICA. I can get married to whom I want…. in AMERICA. I can have as many kids as I want…in AMERICA! I can peacefully protest…in AMERICA. I can eat potato chips and drink soda…in AMERICA. I can be a vegetarian…in AMERICA! I can be friends with people of other races and religions…in AMERICA! I can listen to gospel music….in AMERICA. I can listen to Rock and Roll music…in AMERICA. I can listen to NO MUSIC…in AMERICA. I can drive a little car…in AMERICA. I can drive a big car…in AMERICA. Perhaps we need to spend more time concentrating on what we DO HAVE instead of what we DO NOT HAVE! Then maybe those 44% would be proud to be an AMERICAN again. America…the land of the free….the home of the brave. America…land that I love. America….God shed His grace on thee.

GERALD WOLFE

BY: MELISSA BRADY

On Monday, July 7, 2014, there was an electric excitement in the air as an audience of 1,500 filled the beautiful auditorium of First Baptist Church of Morristown, Tennessee, to participate in the filming of Gospel Music Hymn Sing®. The artists: The Mark Trammell Quartet, The Mylon Hayes Family, The Hoppers, The Talleys, Karen Peck & New River, Greater Vision, Tribute Quartet, Jim & Melissa Brady, The Nelons, The Whisnants, and others, took to the stage to sing from the beloved old red-backed hymnal, while the congregation sang along on each song. The evening was filled with great moments, including The Mylon Hayes Family, singing the “Do Re Mi’s” on “Jesus Spoke To Me” and it was especially moving to hear the combined local choirs of First Baptist Church and Alpha Baptist Church singing “I Know He Heard My Prayer” exactly as it is written in the hymnal. The applause was thunderous for Pat Barker, Chris Allman, Rodney Griffin, and Mark Trammell, as they sang The Cathedral’s famed a capella rendition of “Wonderful Grace Of Jesus.” Folks came from all across the country, and it was exciting to have Mildred Spethman, all the way from El Cajon, California. In celebration of Mildred’s 100th birthday, Gerald Wolfe sang “Never Grow Old” just for her and, when asked why she traveled the many miles to attend the taping, she said “If that many people are going to be singing hymns in harmony, I HAVE to be there!” As 30 hymns were sung during the filming, the audience was moved to tears and filled with a spirit of worship. It was definitely a night to be remembered. After the event, Gerald said, “There is simply no substitute for the experience of corporate worship. To be in a beautiful church, filled to capacity with fellow believers, lifting their voices together in praise to The Lord, is both humbling and awe-inspiring. This evening was that—and much more.” The entire event was recorded in HD and 5.1 Surround Sound. The DVD will be released on Sept. 22, debuting at the National Quartet Convention. Best of all, if you want to see this exciting event live, plans are already being made for more Gospel Music Hymn Sing® events in the near future! Be watching www.IMCconcerts.com for event listing. Every southern gospel fan has a question he hopes to ask his favorite gospel singer. Now, with the help of a new and promising interview series called “On the Couch with Fouch,” fans finally get a chance to do it.

MATT FOUCH

So, what is “On the Couch with Fouch”? “On the Couch with Fouch” is a new and engaging interview series hosted by Legacy Five’s bass singer, Matt Fouch. Releasing a new interview on the first day of each month, Fouch interviews numerous gospel artists such as Ronnie Booth of The Booth Brothers, Chris Allman of Greater Vision, and Legacy Five’s Scott Fowler.

In addition to the monthly interview series, Fouch decided to expand on the idea by creating weekly podcasts and a new video blog. These weekly video blogs and podcasts (audio interviews) give Fouch the opportunity to interview new and rising gospel artists, share Southern Gospel news segments, as well as keep fans up to date on the recent happenings with Legacy Five.

During these ten to twenty minute interviews, Fouch asks the artists a variety of questions, some of which are actually questions submitted by fans.

Just out of curiosity, does the series actually take place on a couch? Although the couches vary in size, color, and location, “On the Couch with Fouch” does, indeed, take place on a couch when at all possible.

“These videos are social media driven,” Fouch writes, “which gives it a uniqueness not seen in Southern Gospel music. Those that follow me on Twitter and Facebook have the chance to submit questions, whether it’s a serious or funny question...I am usually able to [use] about ten of them [in the interview].” 34 | SUMMER 2014

How did the series start? According to Fouch, the first glimpse of this interview series appeared when he was still singing with Soul’d Out Quartet (SOQT). Bryan Hutson, a fellow SOQT member, brought

(L TO R): MATT INTERVIEWING SCOTT FOWLER; MATT INTERVIEWING DEVIN MCGLAMERY

up the idea of creating a series of video interviews with the group. “He jokingly called it ‘On the Couch with Fouch,’” Fouch recalls. “Before I left Soul’d Out Quartet, I interviewed all of the members as well as Clayton Inman and Aaron Wilburn. Once I joined Legacy Five, I decided to continue the interviews.” Where can fans access Fouch’s interviews? Fans can view all the interviews, listen to the podcasts, and sign up to receive a weekly e-letter that announces new video and podcast releases at Fouch’s website: www.mattfouch.com. How do fans submit questions? To submit questions, simply join Fouch on Twitter (www. twitter.com/L5bass) or on FaceBook (www.facebook.com/ mattfouchbass). Finally, and most importantly, what is the Fouch Zone? The Fouch Zone takes place in the last few minutes of each

interview when Fouch gets to ask the artists a few questions of his own. The catch is they’re timed questions. This fast and humorous exchange tends to go something like this: Fouch: What is the capital of Kazakhstan? Artist: Isla... Fouch: Time! What is the total mass of five CDs? Artist: Maybe-Fouch: Time! Why are long pants long? Artist: ... Fouch: Time! “On the Couch with Fouch” is an informative, engaging, and downright entertaining interview series that gives southern gospel fans a glimpse into the lives of their favorite music artists. In addition, the series gives fans the opportunity to ask those gnawing questions and finally get some answers. So be sure to tune in to Fouch’s interviews each month and enjoy ten to twenty minutes learning about and laughing alongside some of today’s most talented performers. SUMMER 2014 | 35

THE

Journey TO

GABRIELLE’S

Sister

38 | SUMMER 2014

BY: MARY ALICE LOVELACE

(L TO R, TOP TO BOTTOM): GRACIE AND GABRIELLE AT THE BEACH; TIM AND HIS GIRLS; MARY ALICE AND THE GIRLS ENJOY AN EVENING AT MYRTLE BEACH; ON A RIVERBOAT CRUISE ON THE PEARL RIVER IN CHINA; GABRIELLE AND GRACIE’S FIRST CHRISTMAS TOGETHER

In August of 2007, our daughter Gabrielle, who was four years old at the time, came to me and asked if I could teach her how to count to ten in Chinese. When I told her that I couldn’t, she asked if her daddy could. He, of course, gave her the same resounding “no” that I had given her. A few days later, a friend of mine called to tell me that the Knoxville Chinese Christian Church was offering Mandarin classes for children and asked if I thought Gabrielle would be interested in learning the Chinese language. I couldn’t believe my ears! I told her that Gabrielle had already expressed an interest in that language, and when I asked Gabrielle if she would like to attend the classes, she was beyond excited and couldn’t wait to start! God had—very quickly—given her the desire of her heart. She enthusiastically attended the classes and fell in love with the language. About a year later, she came to me one day while I was in the kitchen and said, “Mama, God spoke to my heart and told me He’s going to give me a Chinese sister.” I was a little surprised, but I honestly didn’t think much of it at the time. However, it was not simply a passing thought for her. Clearly, she was serious about this, and she wasn’t going to let us forget about it. Every couple of days she would ask, “Are you working on getting my sister?” Then she began to ask, “Are you praying about it?” That’s when Tim and I knew that we had better start talking to God about this ourselves. We found an adoption agency in South Carolina that facilitates China adoptions, and we decided it would be a good idea to take Gabrielle there to let her meet the staff and

learn what adoption is all about. We wanted her to have a full understanding of what would be involved if we decided to pursue this dream of hers. But who were we kidding? She had been ready for months! It wasn’t long before we were walking alongside Gabrielle on the road to adoption—the journey to her sister! In April of 2009, we started our paperwork. Anyone who has been through the adoption process knows that the paperwork alone is one of the hardest, most tedious tasks. When we were able to view a list of adoptable children, Gabrielle knew right away which one was her sister—a little girl who is only 7 months younger than her. She had loved her from the moment God spoke to her heart! In June of 2010, we traveled to China and brought home Gabrielle’s sister, Gracie Mae. The question we are most frequently asked is, “How did you prepare Gabrielle for your adoption?” I have to answer in all honesty and say, “We didn’t prepare her, she prepared us!”

“HE WASHED MY FEET” THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG BY: RODNEY GRIFFIN

He Washed My Feet written in 1998

Verse 1 The moment our eyes met, I knew this was the night That I would betray Him the precious, Lamb of God No other disciple was aware of my plan ‘Til He rose from the table with something in His hand His Holy eyes pierced through me Revealing all my sin I knew His wrath was coming And this would be the end CHORUS But He bowed, and He Washed My Feet Knowing that I was the cause of His grief When He should have scolded, He whispered, “Peace” As He bowed, and He Washed My Feet Verse 2 Judas would fail Him, but He’s no worse than I The moment I gave in to Satan’s compromise Ungrateful that Jesus, had saved me from hell, I was walking so proudly And that’s when I fell His Holy eyes pierced through me Revealing all my sin I knew His wrath was coming And this would be the end

42 | SUMMER 2014

RODNEY GRIFFIN

I love to write songs in the first person. I enjoy putting myself in someone else’s shoes, and trying to feel what they felt at a particular moment. It’s quite challenging to write this way because you take the risk of the listener not knowing exactly who you are portraying. You have to be very clear. If they don’t pick right up with the story as you begin, they probably will not be able to follow you through to the ending. However, I took this chance in 1998 when I wanted to write about what could be called “The” most awkward moment in the history of mankind…

It started out as a normal night of fellowship. The disciples had prepared the Passover meal there in the upper room and everyone there was ready to enjoy… all except for one. He was the one with the hidden agenda. He was the evil planner. He was the betrayer. He was Judas. Taking his place there at the table, he planned his attack. While others were enthralled with the words of the Master, he was hearing the clang of thirty pieces of silver. That was until Jesus broke the program, and came face to face with satan. As only a Holy, humble servant would, Jesus prepared a basin of water, gird Himself with a towel, and began, one by one, washing the disciples feet. His goal…Judas. He and Judas were the only ones in the room who knew what was going on behind the scenes. It was classic darkness versus light. How would Jesus react to the one He knew would betray Him? Would He embarrass Judas by telling Judas’ secret sin, and then refuse to wash Judas’ feet because of it? I’ve often wondered what went through Judas’ mind at that moment. Knowing he deserved scolding for what he would do to the Master, he watched Jesus with cautious eyes. Finally, the moment of truth came… the most awkward moment in history. Purity knelt before the pathetic. Holiness knelt before hatred… and served him. Jesus carefully and lovingly washed the feet of the one who would soon lead Him to an old rugged cross. Why did I write this song? What motivated me? If I were honest with you, I would tell you that it is because Judas and I have a lot in common. We’ve both dropped the ball when we should have carried it a little further. We’ve both turned our heads when someone needed us. We’ve both portrayed to be something we are not. But, thanks be to God, we have one more thing in common…We’ve both had our feet washed by a precious, loving and forgiving Master Who said, “I love you anyway”.

DOG OR CAT? There’s a Difference!

BY: KEN DAVIS

A dog is a man’s best friend. If you don’t believe it, put your dog and your friend in the trunk of the car for an hour. When you open the trunk, which one is really happy to see you? I won’t even suggest that you put a cat in the trunk for an hour. A dog knows how to love. It’s said that C.S. Lewis, who loved dogs, once stated that dogs give us a hint of what true worship should be like. Think of it. When a dog’s master is gone, the dog is miserable and gets into all kinds of trouble. When the master returns, the dog is filled with ecstatic joy. Meanwhile, the cat has taken up residence in your favorite chair, looking at you as if to say, “I was here first!” A dog is obedient. Dogs constantly look to you for direction and are giddy with the opportunity to please you. I tell my dog to “sic ‘em” and he takes off, not even knowing what it is he’s suppose to “sic.” Eventually, he heads straight for the cat. I tell my cat to “sic ‘em” and I get a condescending “are you out of your mind” look. A dog’s attitude is one of service and worship. “You pet me, you feed me, you put a roof over my head. You must be God!” A cat’s attitude is rebellious and independent, “You pet me, you feed me, you put a roof over my head. I must be God.” Unfortunately, I often have a cat attitude. Yep, I think we need to be a little more like dogs. What do you think? Have at it cat lovers, but be nice! No hissing!

BY: DOUG ANDERSON

Bringing joy to the stage

Having been with Ernie Haase and Signature Sound (EHSS) since the beginning, I have had the opportunity to go overseas many times. Each time, I have enjoyed the experience, the sights, and more than anything, the people. However the trip we were able to make this summer will go down as my favorite. We were able to visit Belfast, Northern Ireland, Larrabee, Scotland, The Netherlands, and Riga Latvia. The trip actually started out pretty rocky for me. Due to storms, my plane was cancelled out of Indianapolis to meet my connection with the rest of the EHSS guys in New Jersey. After 36 hours of delay I finally met up with them in Belfast. Belfast, Northern Ireland is one of my favorite cities with its old buildings and of course, it’s one of the favorite places for EHSS members to find stage attire. After a workout and a trip around the city and some famous fish and chips it was time to head to the venue for the evening show. Belfast always brings great crowds of enthusiastic people and we are never disappointed. One of the highlights for us is to stand in the lobbies and meet and greet all the lovely people after the show. After the show we were quickly taken to the hotel to get a couple hours sleep before a 5:00 am lobby call to go to the airport. The next stop was Larrabee, Scotland where we were thrilled to get to perform at the historic Larbert Hall. Another great show with amazing people. We were thrilled with the amount of new people who were seeing us for the first time due to finding us on Youtube and watching the new Oh What a Savior video. We also met up with our old friends the Selwyn family. You may remember their son Colet, who won the CFR singing contest. Another early morning flight took us to Amsterdam where we performed that night for the first time with a live orchestra. We have always had orchestration on our projects, but to feel that live energy that they brought to the show was something I will never forget. The audience was electric that night which just makes us want to give them more. Ernie called a program that was a big mixture of old and new classics. We did have some sightseeing time in Amsterdam the next day. We visited Ann Frank’s house and walked around the city taking in the architecture, history and of course the food. The

Canal lined city was a great place to explore, relax and hang out together. The next two days were my favorite. We were able to stay in the Netherlands and be a part of the Opwekking festval, which is a gospel festival of music and speaking. It is held on the weekend of Pentecost and is pretty much like a Gospel Woodstock. 80,000 people in tents and campers come from all over to celebrate Jesus for three days. Not only did we get to sing on their two biggest stages but we had time to participate in the activities of the festival ourselves. We were all overwhelmed and moved that so many people from all different walks of life were there to celebrate our Savior. Our last stop was Riga, Latvia which was one of the last regions of Europe to be Christianized. One of the most humbling experiences of the trip found us singing to sweet people longing to find the joy that we brought to the stage that night. The opening group was a quartet who had watched many of our videos and knew our music backwards and forwards. They call themselves Signature Sound Latvia. They have it down too, all the way to the suits, hair, and moves on stage. One of those things that just makes you smile is the fact that all the miles and time we put in has made a positive influence on some young kids. To us, that is what it’s all about. After one more early morning it was time to go home. While sitting on a plane for nine hours, we had a lot of time to discuss the trip. As you can see, we had a great time. The people were so glad we were there, but in the end, I think they were a bigger blessing to us. It was worth all the cancelled fights, layovers, late nights, and early morning lobby calls. It was truly one of my favorite trips for so many reasons and I think the guys would agree. The people overseas hold a very special place in our hearts and we look forward to visiting again soon. I finally landed in Indianapolis with no delays, thanking God for safe travels. As always, it’s great to make the trip, but there is no place like home.

MEET THE ARTISTS (TOP TO BOTTOM:) ANTHONY FACELLO AND DUSTIN DOYLE PERFORMING ON STAGE; BEYOND THE ASHES PERFORMING AT A CHURCH

Beyond the Ashes

Beyond our plans, beyond our own abilities, beyond our failures, beyond our own God-given talents, above and beyond anything we could ask or even imagine. God has a plan for each of us, to rise above the ashes and to live powerfully for Him.

Anthony Facello, the group’s founder and tenor singer, is no stranger to Christia n music. The Dove nominated male vocalist has been traveling for 18 years. He has sung and toured with some of Gospel music’s most recognized names and even enjoyed being a part of the well-known Gaither tour on several occasions. Anthony has an incredible tenor voice, but it is his heart that really sets him apart. He is deeply committed to his calling. He would rather see someone sincerely touched by the music than be recognized for his gifts. Dustin Doyle is an incredible talent. He sings, plays, and writes music. Dustin has a rich heritage in gospel music. Being raised as a pastor’s son, Dustin gained a love for God and Christian music. He is a tremendous man of God who balances a beautiful family and road life so well. Although a relative newcomer to the stage, Tyler Vestal’s love for and knowledge of gospel music goes back to his childhood. Tyler learned to sing harmony and play the piano by his mother playing and singing gospel music in their home and their church throughout his life, as well as with the poplular female trio she co-founded, Rejoice! At the age of 17, Tyler joined Rejoice as bass singer, bringing a great new dimension to their sound and performance. He is a very gifted musician and vocalist and many have compared him to some fo the greatest pianists in gospel music. Each young man in the group brings an exuberant love, respect, and admirat ion for Christian music. Their lives are dedicated to reaching out with a fresh new zeal and passion for those who desire a closer relationship with the Lord. Their musical style and diversity is rooted in Gospel music with tight harmonies and a rich blend. Their talent opens the door for them to convey several styles and genres of music with one common denominator: it is music that speaks to the heart of the listener. It is music for the church.
