Hello! We would like to take a moment to introduce ourselves. We are Aaron & Kristy DeBuhr, the new owners of Imagemark Marketing & Advertising and publishers of Capital Lifestyles. We could not be more excited to be a part of a business with such a long history of great service, creative ideas and quality solutions. We recently relocated from Colorado with our two wonderful children, Kale (8) and Maya (5) and two high-energy dogs, Kaiser & Stella. We cherished our time in Colorado and have tons of great memories but are elated to be closer to family and many of Aaron’s lifelong friends who he grew up with in northeastern Missouri. We have enjoyed exploring the area and all it has to offer and know we are in good company sporting our Cardinals and Mizzou gear around town!

It was not long before we realized that we made a good choice to move to Jefferson City. Despite the masked smiles, the friendly gestures and simple waves ‘hello’ have made us feel at home from the onset. Our kindergartner and 3rd grader immediately felt comfortable on their first day of school and were excited to share the names of the friends they made and what they liked best about their day. We have been so impressed by the school, teachers and staff and their commitment to ensure our children thrive. Our story is similar, in a way, to the one you will read about in this issue of Capital Lifestyles, titled, New Beginnings. Like the homeowners in this article, we took the opportunity to start anew, moving to a close-knit community where we could raise our children in a safe and comfortable place with family nearby. We quickly understood why Jefferson City is one of America’s top places to live and look forward to helping to preserve that well-deserved acknowledgment. We have some ideas of how to bring more of what the area has to offer into Capital Lifestyles, sharing personal experiences along our journey. This was our inspiration for the piece on the city’s newest park, Community Park. We stumbled upon this park over the summer and it has quickly become a family favorite. We have always admired the beautiful spreads in Capital Lifestyles and could not be more excited to continue publishing this high quality, creatively designed magazine. In this edition of Capital Lifestyles, you will find delightful outdoor living spaces to ponder and, whether your style is simple or exuberant, artistic ideas for the kitchen. We think you’ll enjoy hearing stories of heartwarming transformations for a family of five and of a dream home crafted with puzzle piece precision after years of collecting the very material he would use to build it. We also think you will be inspired by the meaningful partnerships created between homeowners and their local construction and design teams, alongside the amazing suppliers that make visions and inspirations become reality. These homeowners started their remodel journey with a conversation that lead to an introduction to Tina Davis of Designs by Tina. They immediately eased into a comfortable relationship where the exchange of information about the things their family loves, how they live, and how they plan to use the home became the foundation of their design plan. They began the main level remodel of the home by taking it down to the studs. This gave them a fresh start from which they would begin remodeling their existing home. details shine through in the grand two-story entryway. The front door itself looks like a built-in unit with molding and casings reaching all the way to the ceiling. The beautiful walnut hardwood flooring runs throughout the main level and up the staircase. Varying width planks was a very specific item on the homeowner’s wish list and creates a more natural, authentic feel. Along the walls, they added raised panels below a chair rail.

To one side of the entrance is the formal dining room, which is set for holiday festivities with family. In this room, the color and texture were very important. They wanted this room to be one that could transition with them, with very classic tones that could stand the test of time for the next 20 years. They chose a textured cork wallpaper for the walls, and even the ceiling got a touch of color. Contemporary lighting provides a pop of sparkle and contrast.

Crossing the entry, past the grand staircase, the front parlor is the perfect example of how a toneon- tone design can keep a space neutral by using subtle consistent color choices and texture. The homeowner had seen a photo of Kris Jenner’s 26

home office online and fell in love with her built-in cabinetry. She shared the photograph with their cabinet maker, and they created a custom feature that is just as beautiful as Jenner’s. The glossy grey arched cabinet details echo the curves of the

rounded club chairs. Meanwhile, a pair of sliding doors mimic the cabinet’s mirrored glass inserts, an element that is repeated throughout the home. During the remodel, the family chose to enlarge and raise many of the existing doorways. While the

house retains a light, open feeling, this family still loves the division of space. The sliding doors separate the front sitting room and the living room, adding a bit of privacy with a high-style design element.

Moving on into the great room, you can clearly tell you are in the heart of the home. The open space is filled with light from the wall of windows and the neutral color scheme is punctuated with brilliant blues and colorful accents. The existing fireplace brick was updated with a fresh coat of white paint, along with new millwork and a wood mantel.

In the adjacent kitchen, Tina had quite the design task, planning around the existing windows to seamlessly integrate the appliances, while creating a sense of visual balance. The finished result is not only functional, but also sophisticated with the perfect touch of sparkle. The subway tile backsplash shines with undercabinet lighting. Behind the stovetop a mother of pearl tile medallion features a water jet cut scroll design. From the glass and mirrored cabinet inserts to the glistening pendant lights, everything radiates in the natural light.

The homeowners worked with their builder, Brian Stahl Construction to create the beautifully crafted opulent millwork that is especially impactful in the cabinet design. The craftsmanship and detailing of the custom cabinetry’s façade are only surpassed by the detailed storage plan behind the doors and inside the drawers. The homeowner detailed her storage needs for all her cooking appliances, pots and pans, baking accessories and the multitude of necessities in a well-stocked cook’s kitchen.

The blue colors from the sitting space carry over to the large L-shaped island. Topped with a gleaming quartzite countertop, there is an expansive workspace and room for barstools to be added. The skilled millwork and cabinetry shines in this space. Multiple moldings were artfully and skillfully combined to create a beautiful cabinet design. Reaching all the way to the ceiling, the crown continues seamlessly around the room and onto the cabinets. Every opportunity for detail was taken advantage of. Even the stove becomes a standout work of craftsmanship with lovely scaled corbels anchoring the stove hood. The refrigerator is cleverly concealed behind mirrored cabinet doors, and glass is used in the upper cabinets to offer display space.

Another hidden secret is the walk-in pantry and morning kitchen. From sipping their morning coffee to easily storing all their kitchen needs, for this family, this room is a huge convenience. By integrating a delivery vestibule, groceries straight from the car to be put away. Again, the storage here was customized to their needs, while keeping everything within easy access and nothing hiding in the back of a dark cabinet. Underfoot printed tiles are a much-loved touch that add a layer of personality.

The homeowners, along with a team of very talented and skilled craftsmen, have created a space that elevates a once traditional home to a modern interpretation of classic architectural elements which will gracefully stand the test of time. These homeowners enjoyed the journey and the relationships they developed along the way. With all the chaos that comes with having young kids, dogs, careers and all those other adult responsibilities, these homeowners were looking for a place of calm and togetherness. Their kitchen was the most practical place for this investment. When the homeowners purchased the home, the layout of the kitchen was adequate but not the most practically designed or exciting with a bland color scheme – short maple cabinets, pale tile floors and lightly-colored laminate counters. These days the kitchen is a place of pure delight – a welcoming space, perfect for baking holiday cookies or enjoying a glass of wine with friends. As the floors were updated first, the rest of the kitchen had to complement the dark shade of the luxury vinyl tile flooring, chosen for its durability and cost-

efficiency. The homeowner chose a light grey cabinet with a darker glazed finish to help tie in the dark shades of the flooring. The prominent molding and rubbed bronze hardware provide a hint of elegance throughout this space. The homeowner decided upon a stainless-steel farmhouse sink to match the appliances – rather than the more traditional white porcelain – for both resilience and aesthetic reasons. The gorgeous quartz countertops with bevelededging have both grey and blue veining in the stone which tie into the blue-grey colored walls. Perhaps the most striking feature of the kitchen is the brick wall in the foreground. The homeowners tackled this DIY project themselves using brick veneer. The beautiful log and timber frame home of Shannon and Beth Block is the result of years of planning, collecting vintage materials and finally construction. Shannon Block is an old soul, with a deep appreciation for precise craftsmanship. Having been in construction for over two decades, he has taken down his fair share of old barns in disrepair. He has repurposed many of the materials into mantle pieces and accents in other homes he has built during his career. When he would come across just the right structures, he would often ask the property owner if they would sell the logs, knowing that one day he would use the materials to build his and Beth’s forever home. After a bit of negotiating, Shannon would begin the tedious process of drawing the existing building. He tagged and numbered each log and beam prior to dismantling the structure.

When he found a barn large enough that could ultimately become the framework for their home, he put together a plan for their dream home which would take advantage of the rare size of the 30x45 structure. Back in the day when these old barns were built, they rarely were the size of the homes we build today. All the rafters are original to that barn. While one end of the barn was in disrepair, Shannon knew he could replace the front and back walls. However, the middle structure was in great shape and it was a blessing that it was the perfect size. The flankers he wanted to build from log and stone were harvested right before he started. After a call about another structure, he was able to integrate the logs from that structure into the two ends of the house.

Upon entering, the center of their home boasts a commanding staircase which leads to the upper level loft. The stair parts are knotty hickory with the posts and handrails crafted from the barn’s rafters. Shannon wanted the spindles to have a heavier appearance to fit the scale of the home. The view from this lofty space is exceptional. Shannon now uses this inspiring space for his office, where he does his day-to-day business.

A farmhouse table carries the rustic theme of the house in the adjoining dining area. This table also holds a sentimental nod to their own family history. When their own barn fell over in a huge ice storm, Shannon was quick to collect the wood to be used in this special project. With a sturdy metal trestle base, the table is topped with glass that allows the wood details to shine through while keeping it protected and low maintenance.

Shannon has his own sawmill, cutting and milling all the hickory logs from their farm for the cabinetry. The hickory cabinetry sings against a classic subway tile backsplash. Then, behind the stove, the tile is laid in a herringbone pattern for a nice contrast. The counters and large island are topped with granite that lightens the space while providing a nice texture and movement.

In the master bedroom, the log structure creates a lovely texture on the walls. Shannon hand hewed the 34-foot log he needed to span the structure. As this top log locks everything together, it is integral to the home’s structure. Overhead, barn siding that had been semiplaned is inset into the tray ceiling. In the en suite, modern amenities create the luxury bath for them to enjoy. The free-standing vintage clawfoot tub was refinished by Extreme Body and Paint. It's the perfect addition to this home where old meets new.

In their daughter’s bedroom, the ceiling was from an old log home in Freeburg that Shannon had taken down. The tongue and groove wood still has the old paint on it. The distressed white crackle finish is quite the unique feature.

Man Cave The “Man Cave” downstairs plays to Shannon’s rustic tastes. The pool table is a lighter wood tone, and it is topped off with a hand made light fixture. The chain from which it hangs was originally an assembly for oxen. It was combined with a hand-hewn log. Then they brought together the pieces to make the fixture. “Some of the parts were more fun than others to gather,” said Shannon. We’re pretty certain he was referring to the Jack bottles! In the large family room, the structural timbers and fireplace downstairs are in line with those on the main level. Ever the builder, even the kayak hanging from the ceiling was handcrafted by Shannon and their son. In the corner, a display case, originally from an old general store in St. Thomas, showcases Shannon’s 20-year collection of vintage tools. “Imagine the skill of the craftsmen who used them. They meticulously created everything by hand. The craftsmen that built the Governor's Mansion and the finer homes used many of these same types of tools. Each one has a specific use and function. For example, crown moulding would’ve been created by using multiple tools to create each level of its profile detail,” said Shannon. You can tell when talking with Shannon that he has admiration of the men who used the tools and created the meticulous details featured in vintage homes.

Attention to detail is just as evident outside the home as it is inside. Shannon, having also collected the foundation stones from the buildings and barns he took down, integrated these old stones where he could. Once the home’s foundation was done, they built the retaining walls. He was able to source newer material that looked as close as possible to the old stones, retaining the look of a home built in the 1800s, with the modern additions of a patio and firepit. The stone arches on the lower patio add interest to the back of the home. The combination of logs, stone and modern siding was used to create a striking exterior. In the end, this home was a true labor of love and craftsmanship, taking about a year to actually construct. Each log had the years of farming dirt washed clean and was stained and sealed. Then, each log had to be recut because of the difficulty of building a modern structure from 34-foot long logs. He crafted complex joinery to put one end of a log onto another while maintaining its structural integrity.

You are welcomed by two custom-made flower sculptures greeting you at the entrance. The expanse of green turf (faux grass) quickly provides a feeling of tranquility. According to many psychologists, the color green can provide us balance while soothing our emotions. Who couldn’t use a little ‘green’ in their life right about now? The 3.5 acre park provides plenty of room for everyone to spread out in a socially-distanced way. When the time is right, you’ll also find sufficient space under the covered pavilion to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion. Community Park is conveniently located downtown, a block south of Dunklin Street, just across from Lincoln University. When the park opened in July, the “sprayground” became an immediate hit. What a fun way to cool off in the Missouri heat before grabbing some lunch or 84

hitting up the local ice cream shop on your way home. You’ll want to make sure the swimsuits are packed, however. ‘I’ll just run through it once’ may not be an accurate statement, and you’ll wish you were better prepared for the water play. It will make even the bravest of explorers hesitate.

On occasion, you’ll also find parents on the pyramid structure, likely proving to their children (or themselves!) that they are brave enough to conquer the intimidating structure above. If you haven’t had a chance to see Community Park, do yourself a favor and plan a visit. We think you’ll agree that this is a wonderful investment for the community and will be enjoyed for generations.

Creating this backyard retreat took a fraction of the time it took the homeowners to dream up the idea. Since 1994 she wanted a swimming pool while he was more interested in the outdoor living space. They got both. The outcome completely fulfilled their aspirations. The sprawling, wood-burning, fireplace under the captivating dark pine-paneled ceiling makes this atypical “pool house” a place for winter enjoyment as well. The detail-oriented work of Nathan Voss Construction is seen throughout. The homeowners of this gorgeous home knew something was missing for their family of five. Before building their house in the country earlier this year, they owned a home in a bustling city, both working and tending to the needs of their three boys during the week and traveling to St. Elizabeth on many weekends. The homeowners took some time to focus on what was most important in life and the appeal of reducing the weekend road time. After countless hours of consideration about how they could incorporate life in St. Elizabeth with their careers and whether they could even be happy there after living in a city for 20+ years (no Lowe’s, Sam’s, Target, Marshall’s, etc. for 30 miles!), a decision was made. So, during a trip to St. Elizabeth when they gathered with their large, extended family at grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, they surprised everyone with their plans to move to St. Elizabeth in the coming months. Everyone was delighted, but no one was happier than their three boys and Grandma Cency, to learn they would be closer to family and that the boys would grow up with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins nearby. This is what was missing… family. Their kids had always loved coming to the family’s property in St. Elizabeth because of everything it had to offer and were always brokenhearted when it was time to go home. There was no question that this would be the site of their new home; it was time to break ground. The family worked with Paulette Kreter to develop the design plan and with Dean Holtmeyer for their home’s construction.

White oak is featured on the lower cabinets while the upper cabinets are painted white accentuated with Flemish glass accents from Brady’s Jefferson City Glass Company. The homeowner repeated the white oak with an accent on the hood and shelving. Under cabinet lighting helps illuminate the workspace. many other things himself, and his father completed the bathroom vanities. The craftmanship of Gerald Holzer shows in the remainder of the cabinetry. The crown jewel of the kitchen is the pantry. The homeowner built the butcher block countertops and the open shelving which is supported by industrial pipe.
