Feast for the senses this July on the Central Coast! Make room for a feast this winter on the Central Coast, it’s all about the food! The gastronomic month begins on Wednesday 3rd when Bells at Killcare hosts its monthly Cooking School (learn the art of charcuterie), and continues into the opening weekend of July where The Entrance Farmers Markets fill the waterside Memorial Park with fresh produce from around the state. Also on Saturday 6th, Toukley hosts the Food Fun & Music Festival, with plenty of live entertainment and exciting activities, and plenty of food stalls. Focus shifts to Norah Head on Sunday 7th where the Whale Dreamers Festival engulfs the Lighthouse – whale talks, whale watching, entertainment and much more awaits. The Winter Blues and Jazz Festival also makes its return to The Entrance this July, with a toe-tappin’ lineup sure to get you dancing in Memorial Park on Sunday 7th – another great way to keep warm in the cool winter months!

For a wide range of great dining options, make sure you head to our website, where you’ll also find heaps of great kids activities & ideas with the School Holidays over the first two weeks of the month – and make sure you follow us on social media too!

For fine food together with great music, Lizotte’s Central Coast is always a popular choice. This month Daryl Braithwaite, Mark Seymour, The Chantoozies and Ray Thistlethwayte (remember Thirsty Merc?) are just some of the incredible talent you can enjoy with great food.

Marine Rescue NSW Marine Rescue Commander Awarded ESM On 10 June Patricia Dorothy Fayers, Unit Commander of Marine Rescue Central Coast, was awarded the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) that recognises distinguished service by a member of an Australian emergency service. The medal was introduced in 1999, and recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "ESM”. The Awards are made by the Governor-General. Pat Fayers joined the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol (RVCP) on the Central Coast in 1998 and became a member of volunteer Marine Rescue (MRNSW) formed by the amalgamation of RVCP, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association and Volunteer Rescue Association marine units in July 2009. Over the years, Pat has held many roles including Division Commander (RVCP) and Unit Commander (MRNSW). She has provided outstanding service to the Central Coast Unit as well as to the boating community and emergency services in general. While Pat delegates effectively, she also works long hours to ensure the best possible outcomes. She has served the community of NSW with distinction. She commented, “I am grateful for the recognition that comes with the Award but consider that it is really for all the volunteer members of the Unit who made it possible”.

Bushcare Program Seeking Volunteers In the Gosford Bushcare Program, people from the community volunteer their time to come along and help restore areas of their local bushland. The program is open to anyone from the community and there are groups throughout the Gosford area. You can choose which of the locations and meeting times suit you, with most groups meeting once per month for 2-3 hours. You are welcome to try out some of the different groups to find one that you feel most comfortable with. The social side of being a Bushcare volunteer is equally rewarding, especially when sharing a cuppa with homemade treats after tackling weeds. When you join a group more often than not you'll make friends with a like minded group of people that find reward in doing something practical for the bushland reserves close to where they live. As a Bushcare volunteer you will become a part of a larger network of people who like to stay healthy, happy and want to contribute to positive change all over Australia. If you want to volunteer and help to restore Gosford’s beautiful bushland there’s bound to be a group to interest you. To find out more about the Bushcare Program contact Council’s Bushcare Officers Anna Deegan or Michael Smith from Monday to Friday between 9am – 3pm on 4325 8222 or go to Council’s website at www.gosford.nsw.gov.au

School Holiday Fun Milli, Jack and the Dancing Cat Based on the book by Stephen Michael King. Adapted for the stage by Eva Di Cesare, Sandra Eldridge & Tim McGarry. Award winning children’s theatre company MONKEY BAA present this joyful musical during the School Holidays at their new home, Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre from 3 to 27 July. Milli, a solitary shoemaker, has a special gift for fixing things. She can take a thing that is a nothing and make it...a something. Black boots, brown boots, ordinary, practical, familiar, everyday work boots! Night after night Milli dreams that she is brave enough to show everyone what she can really do. But each day is the same, until one morning she meets two vagabonds who come into town. Jack and his Cat dance their way into Milli’s life, and together they make the ordinary extraordinary and life is never the same again. Aimed at 3 to 9 year olds this very special musical focuses on the joy of creativity, of being brave enough to follow your dreams and the importance of friendship. Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre, Terrace 3/1-25 Harbour Street, Sydney Season: 3 – 27 July at 11am & 1pm Duration: 55 minutes Prices: $25pp / Family of 4 $90 / Family of 5 $110 / Groups 10+

July is Conservation Month at the Australian Reptile Park July means Conservation at the Australian Reptile Park and we’ve got heaps of activities that will guarantee a fun-filled day during school holidays. We’ll welcome two beautiful dingo pups that will delight visitors and educate and emphasise the importance of the species. Listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the pure-bred dingo is a top order predator that plays one of the most important roles in maintaining balance in Australian eco-systems. The iconic Tassie devil is also a focus for the Park and we’ll continue to educate visitors about this feisty yet fascinating mammal, listed as endangered by the IUCN. Devil Facial Tumour Disease has reduced the species to an alarming 10% of its original population in the wild. The Reptile Park founded Devil Ark, an exciting conservation project that hopes to save the species in the wild. The iconic koala will also be a feature of Conservation Month and we are happy to allow visitors an up close encounter with these wonderful creatures. The koala has now been listed as vulnerable under national environmental law in parts of Queensland, NSW and the ACT. Habitat destruction is the koala’s biggest threat, as well as road strike and dog attacks. Population fragmentation causes inbreeding and many koalas are born genetically deficient.

10

www.monthlyimag.com.au

A breeding program similar to the one created for the Tasmanian devil is being developed to ensure that genetically viable koalas are paired to ensure the long term survival of the species. Our brand new nature walk is now open and features an aviary with endangered birds like the Regent honeyeater and locally endangered Bush Stone Curlew. Eric’s Central Coast Nature Walk also includes a brand new Noctarium, filled with some exciting new species. There are Mountain Pygmy Possums, a critically endangered marsupial from Alpine Australia, the endangered Brush tail bettong and tiny feather tail gliders. Our popular Kids 2 Keeper workshops will be running throughout the holidays, and will have an emphasis on conservation activities. Little Kids 2 Keeper for 8-12’s will feature new activities including wombat weighing, dingo pup grooming, Tassie devil conservation and building a possum box amongst others. The Australian Reptile Park is the hands-on zoo and visitors have the chance to meet animals up close when our roving crew roam with reptiles between 11am – 2pm every day. Elvis the croc is our star attraction and is NSW’s largest (and crankiest) crocodile! He’s fed at 1.30pm daily throughout the holidays. Stacks of interesting wildlife shows run from 9.45am to 3.45pm every day and visitors can grab a photo with dingo pups, alligators, giant pythons and koalas every day of the holidays. For more details and school holiday show times visit www.reptilepark.com.au

Something Anything

Deborah Buckley Artisan

Something Anything has an eclectic mix of different unique gifts, art & sculptures from talented local artists, jewellery, old and new indoor and outdoor furniture, home and garden features with a difference.

Now that winter is upon us, well and truly. This is a great time to come out to my shop and have a look at my Reverse Glass Painting also known as‘Verre Eglomise’ Verre Eglomise is the term for reverse gilding and painting on glass. With most artwork the artist works from the background first and the highlights are last to be done. With reverse decorative glass painting the highlights are done first and working to the background, which leaves no room for error. It is a decorative glass painting technique that dates back over 2000 years, the origin is unsure; historians believe it to have come from either Italy or China. The name Verre Eglomise was derived from an 18th Century Frenchman, Jean-Baptise Glomy, who renewed its popularity by using it in his designs as a decorator and art dealer. Very commonly used in religious art, decorative panels of furniture, mirrors, clocks and jewellery. In the later periods, on shop windows and advertising mirrors. I have created my own style of Verre Eglomise, creating the designs to today’s modern living styles. With the use of many types of leaf with varying colours and incorporating products such as mica powders and paints. Each piece is commissioned with colour requirements being the priority, being totally unique. It has huge and exciting possibilities for interior design and architectural features.

We are constantly bringing in new stock and strive to make it an enjoyable experience, whether you just want to come and browse or to find that special gift. Situated directly behind Jerry's Gourmet Kitchen Kulnura where you can enjoy great coffee and food.

What a wonderful journey we’ve had so far. We’re so grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve had from all our friends, families and clients. Not forgetting how delighted we are to have made so many more friends through all the new clients who have come to us. As always, we aim to stand by our philosophy of holistic health & beauty, and to keep believing in good karma. To kick off our birthday celebrations, in July we launch HERBAL AKTIV PEEL®. This is a biological method of skin resurfacing. It has a 50-year history of high levels of safety combined with significant results for a wide range of skin conditions. It consists of a compound of dried, crushed botanicals with scientifically proven actions. No synthetic acids or abrasives are added to the formulation. HERBAL AKTIV PEEL® does not rely on an injury for its result. In fact, the herbs contained in this compound are described in the literature for their healing, soothing and regenerating effects. Spirulina, one of the herbs contained in HERBAL AKTIV PEEL®, is estimated to contain 250 vitamins, minerals and trace elements. No laboratory is able to match the biological processes of this single plant. You can apply harsh, damaging chemical acids to your skin or choose herbs as supplied by nature. HERBAL AKTIV PEEL® aids healthy change in the skin to create a fresh, renewed complexion. This treatment is suitable for wrinkles, sun damage, fine lines, freckles, scarring, pigmentation, acne/pimples, enlarged pores, blackheads/milia, stretch marks and skin rejuvenation. The cost is $699, and your 5 day peeling schedule includes: Day 1 Herbal Aktiv Peel® is applied in the salon by your accredited skin therapist. Your skin will appear flushed. Day 2 Use you’re prescribed Home Care products as instructed. Your skin looks normal at this stage.

Mongrel Boots Wheat Hi Leg Rubber Zip Side

Day 3 Continue to use your prescribed Home Care products. First signs of peeling may appear. Day 4 Peeling of the old skin may be noticeable. You may want to stay home on this day. Day 5 Return to the clinic, where your skin therapist performs the included Post Treatment and applies the final vitamin mask, revealing your new skin!

The Entrance

www.centralcoastimag.com.au

The Entrance Lake House Renowned for our mouth-watering all-day cuisine and unsurpassed coffee, locals and visitors to the Central Coast also come here to savour the atmosphere of our beautifully restored heritage building and admire the uninterrupted lake views. The Entrance Lake House owners are Central Coast locals who had a dream to create more than just a beautiful place to dine out. Their vision was to deliver a total experience for people who share their passion for amazing food, seriously great coffee and taking time out to enjoy the good things in life.

The Dining Room is where you can enjoy Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, and is also available for private functions. The Deck offers alfresco style dining, and during winter is protected by a marquee, with the comforts of gas-heated warmth. The Entrance Lake House not only delivers old-world charm and value to everyday dining, it's also the ideal venue for: • An intimate sit down or cocktail style wedding • A sit down or cocktail style corporate function • A birthday party, Christmas party or other special celebration • A High Tea – to celebrate Hen's Parties, Baby Showers or a Girl's Get Together.

Located on The Entrance waterfront overlooking the stunning Tuggerah Lake on the NSW Central Coast, we’re just over an hour north of Sydney and around an hour south of Newcastle. Trading 7 Days a week, The Entrance Lake House is open for Breakfast and Lunch daily, and Dinner four nights a week - Wednesday to Saturday. Upstairs at The Lake House is "The Loft" a stunning, light-filled private space that blends comfortable functionality with a subtly luxurious style - including private bar, sitting room and bathroom facilities. On ground level are two more fabulous function areas - The Dining Room and The Deck.

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Seacoast Fishing The freshest seafood on the Coast Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town, straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! We are open Thursday and Fridays 11am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 6pm. More info on: 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

The best Haloumi Outside of Cyprus... The Judges of the 2013 Sydney Royal have awarded Central Coasts own Cheese Factory “Little Creek Cheese” a Gold Medal for their BBQ Cheese (Haloumi). The only one issued in this class. Up against large companies that specialize in Haloumi from around Australia, the local family claimed the title. Russell Parsons, owner and Cheese maker said “It’s satisfying to know all the hard work has paid off." He also stated “we know it is the best but to get the recognition from the cheese judges is the icing on the cake." Their Haloumi is all hand made from cow’s milk, which they receive from the Riverina area. It’s made fresh, sold fresh and has a wonderful texture and flavour but does not go as rubbery as other ones that are on the market. Located in the Old Milk Factory at Wyong, Russell and Sue work 7 days a week with the help of Sues’ son Alex to produce their Haloumi, Fetta’s, Soft Curd, Ricotta and Labna. Open 10am till 4pm, 7 days a week. They also attend lots of Farmers Markets where they have their Gold Medal winning Haloumi for sale. www.littlecreekcheese.com.au littlecreekcheese@hotmail.com Old Wyong Milk Factory 02 4353 2433 or 0488 481 441

Luka Handcrafted Chocolates Luka Handcrafted chocolate is a young, Central Coast based company, specialising in premium handcrafted chocolates. As such, at “LUKA®”, only the most premium ingredients are used. The chocolates are classical in style, reflecting his background, with the emphasis on a wide variety in flavours and textures, displaying all the skills of the true chocolatier. As the main ingredient, premium Belgian couverture is used. In keeping with current European trends, part of the range is based on single origin couvertures. Rather than being couvertures blended from a variety of beans sourced from different areas, these couvertures use beans sourced from unique, single regions only, bringing out their varietal characteristics. As with wines, these couvertures show “terroir “ indeed. Single origins used include Java, Grenade, Cuba, Vanuatu, Tanzania and Ariba(Equador).
