Editor´s Note Our children are in great danger, as many of them do not know who they are, where they are going, what they live for, complain about everything and get depressed over little things. Angela Marulanda, Colombian writer, in her book De blame for calm, says: “They are super weak boys: traumatize yet depressed yet all want to commit suicide because they do not know how to fight.” And I would add that they do not have a sense of life. Teach our children to marvel at life. They have lost the ability to wonder and think that to dress in designer clothes, have an enviable image or possess the most modern cell will give them happiness. The meaning of life is not in having but in being able to transcend while being happy Let’s help our children find their sense of life in the family, at school, at work, in other words, at any time of their existence.

SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT RADIATION IN THE DENTAL OFFICE? Many parents refuse to make radiographic examinations on their children because they think that this is a carcinogenic radiation, i.e., it may trigger the growth of cancer cells in children. However, this fear is unfounded and should not exist because the radiation used in the pediatric dentist office is very small and it is only performed the x-rays that patient need. In everyday life, without realizing it, we are exposing ourselves to a certain lot of radiation such as solar radiation, the radio waves, microwave oven, cell phones, television, laser beams, among others. Did you know that dental radiographs are only equivalent to one hour of sun exposure in the environment? The dental radiographic exposure represents only 1% compared with other radiological exposures in other fields of health sciences. The government health offices, at federal and state level, establish a set of regulations for the operation of radiographic equipment, proper use of this equipment, its maintenance and the dosage that can emit. In our office, the pediatric dentist is very

careful. First, the radiographic digitalized film in use is not only highly sensitive but also minimum radiation exposure is applied. Second, we have “lead protective aprons” for the patient’s body as well as for the neck and thyroid of children. If the cooperation of parents is required to fasten the child while radiographs are being made, we use “lead protective aprons” for adults. In cases where parents want to be present while we take x-rays, we place them 2 meters away from the device and radiological exposure and behind the cone or 45 degrees behind it. We also use digitized rapid and sensitive receptors to reduce the exposure to a factor of two and we provide to dental assistants with dosimeters in order to monitor and protect you in the event of pregnancy. We hope this will increase your understanding on the subject as well as lessen any fears you might have.

PREPARING TO PROTEST YOUR PROPERTY TAXES Submit the appropriate paperwork For real property in Harris County, you will need to file a written notice of protest by May 31, 2014. You may choose to fill out the paperwork attached to your value notice, or you may choose to take advantage of HCAD’s electronic notice and protest filing system. Gather the necessary materials Fighting property taxes can be an overwhelming process for many homeowners. However, Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS® is here to help. Here are some tips to help you get started as you prepare to protest your property taxes.

To help support your case, take as much paperwork as possible with you to your hearing. You may choose to bring photographs and reports of damages of your property. Try to bring copies of any fire reports, engineering reports, and other related items.

Decide if you want to appeal the value of your home

Resolve the matter at an informal hearing

As soon as you receive a notice from the Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD), review the estimated value of your home and taxes for your surrounding county, city, and school district. The listed amount of your home’s estimated tax includes the appraised value of your home provided by the HCAD, as well as last year’s tax rates of your taxable units. If you believe the appraised value is incorrect, you can choose to appeal the value. Determine what you want to protest When preparing to protest your property taxes, consider the following items and exemptions: * Excessive value * Unequal appraisal * Failure to grant exemptions * Failure to provide notice 08 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

As a resident of Harris county, you may be able to resolve your matter regarding your property tax at an informal meeting with the County Appraisal District (CAD). However, if your dispute is not able to be resolved at an informal hearing, you may then present your case to the Appraisal Review Board (ARB). To learn more about preparing to protest your property taxes, contact Coldwell Banker United, REALTORS®.

First time leaving your

child home alone?

* Make sure you have important phone numbers and instructions on how to care for other children written down. * Keep all doors and windows locked at all times. * DO NOT open the door for anyone unless you personally know the person. * If nighttime, turn on the porch and outside lights. * If you must leave the house for any reason, take the kid(s) with you. * Have a mental fire drill plan. Develop more than one way out of the house in case of a fire.

In case of fire : * Sound the alarm, yell FIRE as loudly as possible. * If safe, close the door to the area where the fire is. * Get everyone out of the house as quickly as possible. * Keep all the children together and go to a meeting point outside. * Call 9-1-1.

Put together detailed notebook and include the following items: * Parent’s / Guardians names * Your home address * Parent’s home and cellular phone numbers * EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER (9-1-1) * Name and phone number of family doctor/ pediatrician * Name and phone numbers for neighbors and close relatives * POISON CONTROL (1-800-222-1222) * Location of exits * Location of door keys * Location of first aid supplies * Food and drug allergies * Special medical information * Children’s bedtimes * Any food or drink to be given or not given to the children 10 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

What’s the Real Deal Behind Baby Carrots? Parents love them sgfhgfjghkhjkjhlhjlhjlhjlhjlhjlhjlhjlhjlhj, for their convenience and because they’re seen as a healthy food choice. Kids love them because they’re sweet and fun to eat. Prior to the mid-1980s, broken and misshaped carrots were discarded. Carrot farmer Mike Yurosek took the carrots and used a potato peeler to reshape them into small pieces more suitable for quick munching. Yurosek purchased an industrial green bean cutter to quickly whittle the carrots into the familiar 2-inch portions we still see today — and their popularity took off. But before packaging, all carrots receive a brisk scrub accompanied by a chlorine bath. The world’s largest carrot grower, Grimmway Farms, whose labels include Cal-Organic, uses a chlorine solution on all its carrots – organic and non-organic -- to prevent food poisoning, before a final wash in water. Grimmway says the chlorine rinse is well within limits set by the EPA and is comparable to levels found in tap water. Ashley Bade, nutritionist and founder of Honest Mom Nutrition, says the chlorine

12 www.imaginekidsmagazine.com

bath is a standard practice in many pre-cut food items. “The chlorine-water solution is a needed step in the process to limit the risk of food-borne illnesses such as E.coli,” she says. The truth is that baby carrots are no different from packaged lettuce or any other prepared produce -- like bagged lettuce -- you find in the grocery store. Dr. Weerasooriya, researcher and professor of agricultural sciences at A&M University, says “perhaps larger, less known health issue is that when you test wild carrots, they have high levels of Thymol, a phyto-chemical that is essential for the body to control bacteria and ward off viral infections,” he said. “Now, when you look at some of these new carrot breeds, this type of phytochemical just isn’t there.” “Carrot companies are trading in nutritional value for increased convenience to the customer – and profit for themselves. “Research should focus on how to retain some of these nutrients, but instead companies are probably more concerned about a longer shelf life.”
