Recently released data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has given home owners a boost, with the Housing Occupancy and Costs report finding that the proportion of income spent on housing costs has not changed in 15 years for owners with a mortgage. Figures from the report indicate that 36% of Australians had a mortgage in 2009-10, up from 32% in 1994. The average mortgage has increased by 114% since 1994, but the amount of income needed for housing costs has remained steady at 18% of average gross weekly income. In the three years leading up to 2009-10, 1.07 million households purchased their home and, encouragingly, 40% of these were first home buyers.

Australia has one of the highest levels of home ownership in the world, and the ABS figures, together with current market conditions, suggest the dream of home ownership is still achievable for many buyers.
