The IMA-Europe Award Scheme Every two years, since 2006, IMA-Europe issues its prestigious Recognition Award. Symbolic in nature, it is a much valued token of recognition. Initially, the Recognition Award was attributed by the IMA-Europe Board of Directors to third parties' initiatives which promoted the industrial minerals sector through educational or awareness raising projects or that contributed to the innovation of the sector. Since 2012, the IMA-Europe Award Scheme opened up to the industrial minerals industry, recognizing the initiative as an excellent way to promoting and exchanging best practices within the sector. IMA-Europe is thereby assisted by an independent expert Jury. The IMA-Europe 2016 Recognition Awards are granted to outstanding projects that bring signi cant contributions to: Safety, Innovation, Biodiversity and Public Awareness, Acceptance & Trust. The Award themes are linked to EU policy objectives, supporting notably the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials and the EU Biodiversity Strategy. The IMA-Europe Safety Award on the other hand actively supports the IMA-Europe Target Zero Injury initiative; focusing this year on “Injury Prevention and Health Protection”.

IMA-Europe 2016 Recognition Award Mattia PELLEGRINI Head of Unit at DG GROW, European Commission Mattia Pellegrini is currently Head of Unit for Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials at the Directorate General for Growth, Internal Market and Enterprise. Previously, he worked as Head of Cabinet of former Commissioner Nelli Feroci and as a Member of the Cabinet of the Vice president of the European Commission, in charge of Enterprise and Industry. He was Deputy Head of Unit at the European Commission in the Strategy and Analysis Unit of DG Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO). He has also worked in DG Environment, where he was responsible for WTO negotiations on Trade and Environment, and in DG Competition (Merger Task Force). Mattia has a Master's Degree in European Legal Studies obtained at the College of Europe, Bruges, and a postgraduate diploma in EC Law obtained at L.U.I.S.S. “Guido Carli”, University of Rome. Prior to that, he had studied Political Science at L.U.I.S.S. “Guido Carli”, University of Rome and Law at the University of Liège, “Institut d'études juridiques européennes F. Dehousse”.
Professor Dr. Karel VAN ACKER Senior lecturer in sustainable materials and processes at the KU Leuven a.o. Karel Van Acker is senior lecturer in sustainable materials and processes, coordinator of the KU Leuven Materials Research Centre and Promotor-Coordinator of the policy research centre Sustainable Materials Management. He chairs the Flemish Transition Network on Sustainable Materials Management and is involved in numerous projects on sustainability assessments of material life cycles, ranging from CFRP to biobased plastics, and on urban mining and the valorisation of residues. He graduated as M.Sc. in materials engineering and obtained a PhD degree in materials science, both from KU Leuven. After his PhD (1996), he worked during several years in industry as manager of a materials and mechanical testing laboratory and at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research. He joined KU Leuven at the end of 2005.
Boris BAROV Conservation Partnership Manager, BirdLife-HeidelbergCement Boris is an ecologist with 20 years of experience in nature conservation. He is currently managing the partnership between BirdLife International and HeidelbergCement in the eld of ecological restoration and sustainability. His work helps the industry and NGOs to pursue common goals through actions on the ground, by promoting local partnerships, by embracing a scienti c approach and by maintaining an open dialogue with society. Boris has experience as conservation manager in species recovery programmes at international level, as well as project manager and team leader for diverse range of biodiversity projects.
Professor Dr Grégory MAHY Professor at Gembloux Agro-BioTech, Liège University A Doctor in Ecology from the UCL, Grégory Mahy works as a professor teaching biodiversity management at the Gembloux Agro-BioTech University of Liège, as well as at the Free University of Brussels (ULB). He leads a research team and projects on themes such as the characterization of evolutionary and ecological mechanisms responsible for biodiversity conservation in anthropogenic and natural landscapes, the development of innovative strategies for the management and valorization of biodiversity in the natural and anthropogenic eco-systems (quarries, urban environments …). Since 5 years, he coordinates the Landscape Architects Master programme, unique in Belgium.

IMA-Europe 2016 Safety Award Mark ELLIS President of the Industrial Minerals Association - North America President of the Judging Panel for the IMA-Europe Safety Award Mark Ellis is the President of the Industrial Minerals Association - North America (IMA-NA) and has a long experience in health & safety matters. IMA-NA is also organizing safety awards. Mark Ellis has worked as a lawyer and business professional in the federal government, trade associations, and in the private sector. Since 2004, Mark Ellis has served as President of the Industrial Minerals Association – North America (IMA-NA), the principal trade association representing the industrial minerals industry in North America. Mr. Ellis began his career as an attorney with the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission, serving in both its Office of Administrative Law Judges and its Office of General Counsel. As Senior Counsel to the American Mining Congress (known today as the National Mining Association), he represented the U.S. domestic mining industry before Congress, executive departments, and the federal courts on occupational health, safety, and industrial relations issues. He was Manager of Government and Environmental Affairs for U.S. Borax (known today as Rio Tinto Minerals). He also served as Vice President and General Counsel of the National Legal Center for the Public Interest, a nonpro t legal and educational foundation. Prior to joining IMA-NA, Mr. Ellis served as Special Assistant and senior policy advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health. Mr. Ellis is a graduate of the University of Denver College of Law and its College of Business Administration. He and his family reside in Arlington, Virginia.
Brenda O'BRIEN Manager of the EU-OSHA Liaison Office in Brussels Brenda O'Brien is the Manager of the EU-OSHA Liaison Office in Brussels, representing the interests of the Agency in the EU institutions and other international and European organisations, and collaborating with the European Social Partners, companies and stakeholders engaged in workplace health and safety. Previously, Brenda worked in the Bilbao headquarters, focusing on the Agency's campaigns and SME funding programmes. Before that, Brenda worked in Brussels for several years with the European trade unions, specialising in the European Social Dialogue, advocacy activities, press and campaign work. Brenda holds an honours degree in European Studies from the University of Limerick, and a postgraduate Master of Letters (Sociology) from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
Martin ISLES Special Advisor – Health & Safety, Mineral Products Association, www.Safequarry.com Following 22 years operational experience with George Wimpey Plc across a variety of senior roles in quarrying and aggregate products in the UK, continental Europe and the Middle East, Martin joined the forerunners of the Mineral Products Association (MPA) in 1996. Rising to 'Director, Health and Safety' (2006–2013), representing over 90% of the UK quarrying and mineral products industry, Martin is now part-time 'Special Advisor - Health & Safety', majoring on European representation, and played a key role developing and globally promoting www.safequarry.com.
