FALL

The first official day of September 22, 2024

Welcome to The Hill, Nicky Slices

Nicky Slices Pizza Club, the coolest club in the world, is an Instagram-based, take & bake, Detroit-style pizza club set to open their first brick-and-mortar location on The Hill in just a few months.

Nick Williams, owner and founder of Nicky Slices, announced the brick-andmortar buildout on August 26, 2024 in an Instagram post. “In a couple of months, you’re going to be able to come and get hot pizzas, hot slices, chicken wings, philly’s, everything that you want—live and in person,” Williams said before walking outside to showcase the amazing neon graffiti logo painted on the side of the building by Brooklyn-based artist Adam Fujita.

Nicky Slices grew exponentially on social media over the last few years, selling take & bake pizzas exclusively via Instagram, debuting a new menu every Monday and delivering to customers on Thursdays and Fridays. Most known for their outrageous weekly specials like the LA Street Dogg (mustard, mayo, ketchup, avocado salsa, grilled jalepeño) or the Fall Baby (pepitas, goat cheese, panang curry {shrimp or vegetarian}), you can also find classic favorites like Mom’s Spaghetti (four cheeses, roasted tomato, marinara, parsley pesto) and The Roner (pepperoni, basil, garlic-chile hot honey). Although we’re not

sure what pizzas will gain a spot on the new in-person menu, expect to have your taste buds wowed!

You can find Nicky Slices at 2240 Edwards St., and while an opening date has not been announced yet, you can follow their progress and more at their Instagram account, @nickyslicespizza.

NIAF Statement on Columbus Statue Defacement and Flag Burning in Washington, D.C.

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) strongly condemns the recent acts of vandalism and desecration that occurred on July 24 at Columbus Plaza near Union Station in Washington, D.C.

A group of protesters aligned with pro-Hamas sentiments defaced the statue of Christopher Columbus and burned an American flag. These actions not only disrespect a significant historical figure for Italian Americans but also desecrate a symbol of our nation’s values and freedoms.

NIAF President Robert Allegrini stated, “We are deeply disturbed by these destructive acts. The defacement of the Columbus statue and the burning of the American flag are not forms of protected speech but acts of vandalism that undermine civil discourse and mutual respect in our diverse society.”

While NIAF respects the right to peaceful protest, we firmly believe that destructive actions and the desecration of public monuments have no place in our democracy. We call on local authorities to investigate this incident thoroughly and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

NIAF would like to express our sincere gratitude to the National Mall and Memorial Parks Service for their swift and efficient response in cleaning the graffiti from the monument and removing the debris left behind. Their dedication to preserving our national monuments is commendable and deeply appreciated.

NIAF reaffirms its commitment to promoting Italian heritage and culture in America while fostering understanding and respect among all communities. We encourage constructive dialogue on historical issues and current events, conducted in a spirit of mutual respect and civility.

niece of Carolyn (late Tom) Boyd and Louis (Barb) Puricell; cousin of Annie, Gina and Mark; Loving daughter-in-law of Mary Catherine Alexander; dear sister-in-law of Debbi (late Gene) Reyes, Jeanni (Ross) Blakeney and Julie Alexander.

LynnMarie loved The Hill Neighborhood, was the current Director of The Hill Neighborhood Center, received the Italian American Republic Award from the Sicilian Cultural Association, and even wrote and published a book on the history of The Hill.

She graduated with a Master’s Degree at The University of Keele, in Staffordshire, England, she loved being an educator and taught Political Science and Political History internationally in both Singapore and Malaysia. Lynn loved politics, frequently working on local campaigns. She also loved people, having worked with Acorn and the United Way in Kansas City, volunteering in low income neighborhoods.

LynnMarie had a wonderful sense of humor, always the first to laugh at herself. Her generosity, smile and laugh forever remembered.

If desired, donations in LynnMarie’s name may be made to the Sick and Elderly Program of The Hill or to the ASPCA. DeGregorio, Joseph Roland Joseph Roland DeGregorio passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024. The first of 7 devoted children of the late Roland and Victoria, Joe, a man who impacted countless lives in positive ways during his 77 years, was proud father of Charlie, and “Pops” to his prodigious grandson Henry,

who he deeply adored. Mischievous, but loyal and loving brother to Anita (Steve) Scales, Francine DeGregorio, Paul (Kerry) DeGregorio, Roland DeGregorio, Tina (Terry) Crouppen and John DeGregorio. Joe leaves behind his angel on earth, devoted fiancé, and constant companion Christen Martin, for whom his family and friends will be eternally grateful for her love and care during his 8-year battle with cancer. Joe will miss and be missed by his forever faithful labradoodle Pepino, who brought him tremendous joy. Joe also had a special bond with his many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins and other relatives (he was a Sicilian, after all), even including his first wife Joan Roberts DeGregorio, and the many friends from all over whose lives were forever changed when they met him.

As a child, Joe stood out in every family picture or movie by jumping up and down and making goofy faces, something he continued for the rest of his life.

Joe picked up many skills from his parents, including working as a busboy and waiter with his dad, who taught him how to serve and respect people of all backgrounds. Lover of all things Italian, he picked up his ability to cook Italian dishes and his lifetime love of dancing from his mom.

After graduating in 1970 from his beloved University of Missouri-Columbia (think MIZ…) in Broadcast Journalism, Joe served his nation admirably during the Vietnam era as a chaplain’s assistant in South Korea. During his 30+ year

Continued from page 6 career as a Federal Agent, he was based in Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, Long Beach and Heidelberg, Germany, rising to the rank of Regional Director of the Defense Security Service (now the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency). Joe specialized in the protection of classified programs, counterespionage, counterintelligence, counterterrorism and related disciplines. In 1979 he earned a Master’s in Public Administration from Long Beach State University, CA.

A native of the famed St. Louis Italian neighborhood known as “The Hill,” in 2005 Joe took over the tours of The Hill his father Roland had led for 25 years. He later expanded his repertoire to include

the Dogtown and Bevo Mill/Bosnian neighborhoods, on which he had conducted extensive historical and cultural research. But Joe was most passionate about The Hill, where he was born, grew up, and had recently returned to live. He devoted the last decades of his life to promoting it every single day. Not the shy type, he gave dozens of interviews to local and national print, radio and television media to tell The Hill’s compelling story. On his tours, often conducted with dear friend Sam Martorelli, Joe introduced thousands to The Hill, providing an insider’s view into its unique history, traditions and culture. He told stories of hard-working immigrants, of Prohibition-era stills, and of sportsmen like Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola. He would explain the primacy of St. Ambrose church and impact of Hill Day and Hill 2000, while offering samples Volpi or Oldani salami, Mama Toscano’s ravioli or Vitale’s cookies, and even Bocce lessons. He made significant contributions both oncamera and off to the well-received 2020 Documentary, “The Hill, America’s Last Little Italy,” which was broadcast on national television, and the 2020 book, “The Hill, St. Louis’ Italian-American Neighborhood.” His last endeavor, “The Hill, A Walk Through History,” published by Reedy Press and available on Amazon and at DiGregorio’s Market, was a fitting capstone to his career. Joe was a member of several ItalianAmerican organizations, the American Legion, Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, Continued on page 8

Disabled American Veterans, and the St. Louis Professional Tour Guide Association. From 2015-2020 he was a Board member of the National Federation of Tour Guide Associations. Joe authored numerous articles on tourism, Tour Guides and, of course, The Hill.

Joe was an excellent tennis player, participating in leagues from his 20s through his 70s. Other long-time interests included dancing, bocce, travel, Mizzou football and entering sweepstakes. Joe lived every day to the fullest, especially during his last years battling cancer. If there was a fun time to be had, Joe was there. His stories and memory will live on forever in the hearts and minds of everyone he touched.

Joe wanted a big turnout at his funeral (remember, he was goofy and not shy), and he got it. In lieu of flowers and pasta, Joe asked that donations be made to The Hill Neighborhood Center, 1935 Marconi, St. Louis, MO 63110. Donations can be made through Hill 2000 (hillstl.org).

NIAF Mourns the Passing of Longtime Friend and Supporter, Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr.

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) mourns the passing of Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr., a proud Italian American and tireless advocate for the Italian American community. Pascrell, who represented New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District for nearly three decades, died on August 21, 2024 at the age of 87.

“Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. was a dear friend and unwavering supporter of NIAF,” said NIAF Chairman Bob Carlucci. “Throughout his distinguished career in public service, Bill remained deeply committed to honoring and celebrating our shared Italian heritage. He was a true champion for causes important to Italian Americans, and his loss will be deeply felt by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Pascrell was widely recognized for his unwavering support of Italian American issues, serving as co-chair of the bipartisan Italian American Congressional Delegation alongside Congressman Mark Amodei (R-NV). Together, they worked to establish October as Italian and Italian American Heritage Month, penning numerous resolutions to commemorate the contributions of Italian Americans.

Pascrell was also a staunch defender of Columbus Day, leveraging his position to protect the federal holiday that honors the legacy of the pioneering Italian explorer. He was a regular attendee at NIAF events in Washington, D.C., including the annual bipartisan Bocce Ball Tournament, which he won several times.

In 2021, NIAF honored Pascrell with

the Lifetime Achievement Award for Public Service, recognizing his decades of service and steadfast advocacy on behalf of the Italian American community.

“Congressman Pascrell’s passing is a profound loss for the Italian American community and all those who believe in the power of public service,” Carlucci added. “We are grateful for his unwavering dedication and will miss his passion, energy, and fierce commitment to the Italian American legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.” About NIAF

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) is a non-profit organization based in the United States that promotes the Italian culture and heritage. “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home” by

If you haven’t yet read “From Scratch” or seen the limited series on Netflix, it’s time to add it to your To Be Read (TBR) list. It is a memoir that makes you cry and laugh. It is a love story that will take you through the ups and downs of a relationship and the hardship of a cancer diagnosis. The way a family can come together in times of crisis is inspiring and brings home the message of hope. There is always hope, even in the worst times of a person’s life.

The book and Netflix series showcase the beautiful Sicilian landscape and culture. My absolute favorite part was reading the written Sicilian language and hearing it on screen. I grew up with all four grandparents speaking Sicilian, but to see it written is a rarity. It prompted me to seek out avenues of learning the ancient language. Spoiler alert: there are not many resources out there, unfortunately. It saddens me that these resources are slowly disappearing. I discovered a Facebook group named Sicilian Americans Learning Sicilian, which has proven to be beneficial in understanding the written form of the language I adore.
