The Feast of Saint Januarius by Courtney Kamm Every year on September 19, Italian Catholics around the world take part in the Feast of Saint Januarius to honor him as the Patron Saint of Naples. In Italy, this day is known as La Festa di San Gennaro. What originally began as a one-day celebration became a massive festival that often spans several days. The feast not only contains delicious Italian sausages, pasta, and other delicacies, but also parades, games, and other fun-filled attractions are packed into the day as well. In most locations, the procession of Saint Januarius’ statue and the Italian food and music are included as a staple of the celebration. What are you doing this year to celebrate The Feast of Saint Januarius? Let us know at courtney@ilpensiero.net. Meet the Team by Courtney Kamm

Settembre 2022 Il Pensiero Pagina 5 Continued from page 1 Hello, Il Pensiero readers. My name is Courtney, and I am the Editorial Assistant for Il Pensiero. Although I currently reside in Portland, Oregon, I have loved visiting Saint Louis to see my good friend, Carina Marino, visit famous places such as The Arch and Busch Stadium, and eat delicious food like Favazza’s Restaurant on The Hill. I graduated from The University of Mississippi, Ole Miss, in 2018 where I majored in Broadcast Journalism and minored in Public Relations. Today, I own and operate a digital marketing agency, Disco Media, which I started in 2021. When I am not writing for the newspaper or creating content for my agency clients, you can find me doing yoga (I am also a yoga instructor), hanging out with my dogs Nukka and Sonny, or trying new restaurants around town. I have loved getting to know the St. Louis area from afar over the last 5 years of writing for Il Pensiero, and definitely feel like an extension of the family! Have any questions about me or what I do for the paper? Reach out anytime via email (courtney@ilpensiero.net) or find me on Instagram @courtneykamm.

Development of alternative and conventional energy is increasing in Missouri. Growth of wind and solar energy infrastructure and transmission is addressing the need for carbon-neutral, domestic energy production. However, many conservation groups and individuals are concerned about the potential, negative impacts of energy development facilities, transmission lines, and pipelines on the wildlife and remaining, intact natural habitats of our state.

To address this reality, in 2019, with the endorsement of the Outdoor Action Committee (OAKS)—a group of conservation professionals working to advance conservation action in Missouri— an Energy Infrastructure Conservation Siting Work Group formed to create voluntary guidelines for conservation siting. The Work Group is composed of conservationists and conservation professionals from Burroughs Audubon Society of Greater Kansas City, Great Rivers Environmental Law Center, Missouri Prairie Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, and The Conservation Fund. Work Group technical advisors include professionals with the Missouri Department of Conservation and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Drawing upon conservation siting guidelines for wind energy development created by Burroughs Audubon and expanded to include guidelines for solar energy development, and pipeline and transmission line placement, the Work Group completed these guidelines in July 2022. The Energy Infrastructure Conservation Siting Work Group operated in a specified lane of protecting Missouri’s wildlife and priority conservation landscapes including, Landscape Conservation Opportunity Areas, Important Bird Areas, remnant, biologically rich landscapes and other areas of native biodiversity, and bat hibernacula. The scope of these guidelines is not all inclusive, because specific recommendations, not included in this document, may be made on a projector site-specific basis. Early coordination between energy developers and the Missouri Department of Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, local government, non-governmental organizations, and stakeholders cannot be overstated in its importance. The Guidelines for Conservation Siting of Energy Infrastructure in Missouri are a pragmatic framework to guide and inform siting, regulations, policy, and planning for optimal siting of energy projects and protection of Missouri’s priority conservation landscapes and wildlife.

Following a successful regional visit where NIAF’s Board of Directors met with the President of the Region of Tuscany and local government officials we are proud to partner with Tuscany. Each year, NIAF, collaborates with a region in Italy to promote its culture, business, and tourism in the United States throughout the year. To celebrate the region, Tuscany will be prominently honored at the NIAF 47th Anniversary Gala, October 29, 2022, in Washington, D.C. “The historical ties between Tuscany and the United States are rich. I had the honor to meet with Eugenio Giani, President of the Region of Tuscany, in June where we discussed the importance of the partnership to promote a culture exchange,” said NIAF Chairman Robert E. Carlucci. “NIAF is looking forward to promoting the beautiful region in America while strengthening our historical connections and business opportunities.”During the Foundation’s Board of Directors trip to Tuscany members toured the Strozzi Palace, Scuola del Cuoio, the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum, and much more. Beginning with the Etruscan civilization that inspired the Roman Empire. The birthplace of the Renaissance started in Florence, the capital of Tuscany, thanks in part to the Medici family’s patronage of the arts and humanities. Visitors can retrace the steps of Dante Alighieri, who is considered the “Father of the Italian language”. Located on the west coast of central Italy, Tuscany’s coastline stretches along the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian seas. Throughout the region, discover the natural wonder of Tuscany’s hot springs and the rolling hills that adorn the countryside. The region is known for its red wines of Chianti, the Brunello di Montalcino, the Nobile di Montepulciano, and the Super Tuscans. Tuscan cuisine includes the purest extra virgin olive oil, pici pasta and the Bistecca alla Fiorentina. A meal is not complete without Vin Santo del Chianti DOC, a dessert wine that is a Tuscan symbol of hospitality. Today, Tuscany continues to build off its historic place as the bedrock of the Renaissance by inspiring the rebirth of dreams. Whether it is through museums, festivals, fashion, or much more.
