Misericordia, Donkeys and Carts, Part 2 Misericordia member Biagio Pietroburgo is making progress on his Sicilian Donkey Cart and plans to have it debut in the Italian Heritage Day Parade this month. If you missed the first installment in Il Pensiero last month, Biagio, Corresponding Secretary for the Misericordia Society, is working on an authentic Sicilian donkey cart and even hopes to acquire a donkey to pull it. As of this writing, Biagio has constructed all the parts for the cart, including the floor, sides, wheels, and axle, and is assembling them. Biagio says this cart is unique because its 40-inch fiberglass wheels come from an Amish buggy. The wheels are rimmed in iron, which makes them quite substantial. The axle is also Amish. Biagio visited an Amish community near West Plains, Missouri, to have the axle cut to fit the width of the cart. The axle has roller bearings, which will make it effortless to pull. Base coats of colorful paint are being applied by Biagio’s son, Joe Pietroburgo, and artistic details are being added by Kylie Killbreath, girlfriend of Biagio’s grandson, Arthur Pietroburgo. The colors are predominately red, green, and white for the Italian flag, with a few other accents added for a festive flare. The cart can be pulled by a donkey
or burrow or by six older children or four adults. There will be a seat in the cart, covered with a cushion. Biagio will invite a few of his great-grandchildren to be the first riders. He hopes to make the cart available at Berra Park so all children can have their photographs taken. Biagio is looking for other events besides the Italian Heritage Parade to display the cart. Biagio is dedicating the cart to the memory of his late wife, Marlene, who also served as an officer in the Misericordia Society for many years. Marlene was born 91 years ago on Columbus Day. Biagio hopes to have her name painted on the cart at a later date but is now concentrating on having Cart Marlene ready for October’s events. The Misericordia Members will be treated to a full report at the November meeting. Biagio is looking for a donkey or burrow to pull Cart Marlene. If anyone knows of an available donkey, please call Biagio at 618-980-1201. Check back next month for photos of the finished product and how it fared in the parade.

Harpsichordist Curtis Pavey, Baroque cellist Stephanie Hunt, and lutenist Jeffrey Noonan round out the ensemble. In addition to the songs, the program features a recorder sonata by Arcangelo Corelli, a harpsichord solo by Benedetto Marcello, and a cello sonata by Caldara. The concert will take place on Sunday, October 4, at 3 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (110 N Warson Road, Ladue, MO 63124). Free parking is available. Read With Alexandra Nuove pubblicazioni (RWA) sulla storia dell’immigrazione “The Tigress of Forlì” By Elizabeth Lev italiana in Illinois By Alexandra Marino-Durmišević
For this month’s pick, I dug deep into Il Pensiero’s archives of advance reading copies. This book, published in 2011, chronicles the life of Caterina Riario Sforza De Medici. She was Renaissance Italy’s most courageous and notorious countess. I had never heard of her before reading this book but was eager to get to know this strong woman from the 15th century. Caterina was born into the powerful Sforza family in 1462. She was married off at the age of 10 and became the countess of Imola and Forlì. She embodied her family surname by being assertive, bold, and fearless. A highlight of her accomplishments includes a resistance of her lands to the Borgia family that inspired all of Europe. Happy Italian Heritage Month! Thank you for reading my column. I hope you come back here in November. Grazie Mille Alexandra
Le opere includono: The Church Where Our Families Prayed: The Amazing Story of St. Joseph Parish in Willisville, Illinois: un volume illustrato pensato per i più piccoli.
