Get to Know Rudimentary on The Hill by Courtney Kamm

Nestled in the heart of The Hill, Rudimentary is a menswear line of gently tailored, “casually elegant” pieces made from 100 percent natural material. The brand launched online in 2022, and Owner, Sam Ojile, opened the store on The Hill in July 2023 after years of working in the fashion industry around the world. When asked how they landed on the streets of St. Louis, Ojile said it was more of a twist of fate rather than an active choice, but one he’s grateful for. He went on to boast about their time on The Hill, “The Hill has been great to us. Extremely welcoming and we have had a pleasure getting to know all the locals and local business owners. It’s exciting being around a community that is actively rooting for businesses to succeed and bring value to their community.” Rudimentary shares its new space with Gentry’s Limited, owned by Dakota G. Grady, forming a partnership of what the stores call “luxury paired brands” that

elevate the everyday wardrobe. Sam shares what a typical day in the space is like for the duo, “We will typically get in around 10 a.m. for appointments… - and then we are placing orders, taking photos, organizing, etc. Now that the weather is a little cooler we are also sitting outside with the door open more often.” As 2023 comes to an end, Ojile is looking forward to the new products the store will be carrying in the next few months as well as the chance to get settled into the neighborhood. “We came in quickly with limited planning and it’s been great. However, we have great plans for the future here and we will be taking more and more steps to get there in the next few months.” Stay up to date on everything Rudimentary is doing by heading to their website, rudimentaryco.com, or by following them on Instagram, @rudimentary_co.

Rigazzi’s Sold to New Local Owners

New owners vow to protect landmark on The Hill, while adapting to meet evolving neighborhood

Rigazzi’s, the oldest operating restaurant on The Hill and home of the famous Frozen Fishbowl, will change hands to a new local ownership group of St. Louisans. Corey Christanell and business partner Donn Ganim purchased the St. Louis restaurant from longtime owner/ operator Joan Aiazzi. Aiazzi’s late husband, Mark, ran the restaurant with her until his death in 2013. Before purchasing Rigazzi’s, Christanell spent more than 20 years at Anheuser-Busch, serving as a senior advisor to the CEO and as a senior director of the company’s sports and entertainment marketing department. Christanell grew up working at “Mama” Toscano’s Ravioli - a local Hill institution owned and operated by his grandparents. Toscano’s ravioli were one of the first items on Rigazzi’s menu and remain there today. “Rigazzi’s is a landmark in St. Louis, and an opportunity to buy such an iconic restaurant doesn’t come around often,” said Christanell. “As someone who grew up in South St. Louis and still has deep ties to the community on The Hill, I felt it was important that Rigazzi’s would remain a part of St. Louis for the next generation and beyond. We will honor the rich history of Rigazzi’s while evolving to meet the exciting new growth and energy taking place on The Hill. It’s a great time to be here, and we’re excited for the future.” Located at the corner of Daggett and Boardman, Rigazzi’s was opened in 1957 by friends and business partners Lou Aiazzi (pronounced “Ozzie”) and John Riganti. The pair combined their last names, and Rigazzi’s was born. Since opening its doors, Rigazzi’s has been known for hearty portions of Italian food, coupled with its famous 32-ounce Frozen Fishbowls of beer. “I wasn’t going to sell Rigazzi’s to just anyone – it had to be in safe hands, and that’s who I found in Corey and Donn,” said Aiazzi. “It was important for me to ensure the next owner of Rigazzi’s was

someone with deep ties to The Hill. They grew up coming here, and they understand what Rigazzi’s means to our guests and our community. I can rest easy knowing they will keep the traditions we created on our little corner of The Hill alive and well, and I can’t wait to come back and enjoy a glass of wine on the guest side of the bar!” The new ownership group has hired St. Louis native and restaurant industry veteran Joe Herbert to serve as General Manager. They have also enlisted Greg Hard, a local restaurant consultant, to help them evaluate the existing menu and to explore new offerings, as well as to assist with some design upgrades to the guest spaces. “Don’t worry, the Fishbowls aren’t going anywhere,” Christanell said. “Just as The Hill has evolved in recent years, we are looking to make some thoughtful upgrades and improvements to make sure we have something for everyone at Rigazzi’s. Before I was the owner, I was a long-time customer. I know what makes Rigazzi’s special, and we’re not looking to change that.”

Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NIAF Partner to Strengthen Ties with Italian Americans

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has signed an agreement with Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) to collaborate on the promotion of roots tourism initiatives in America. The partnership aims to encourage Americans of Italian descent to visit the hometowns of their ancestors and connect with their heritage. Perhaps the only thing which the Italian diaspora appreciates more than helping Italy is visiting Italy itself. The Italian government certainly understands that fact which is why it has declared the year 2024 the year of Roots Tourism and it is inviting the global Italian diasporas home to discover their roots in the land of their ancestors. For this reason, last week in Rome, NIAF President Robert Allegrini signed a historic accord on behalf of NIAF with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. This stipulates that NIAF will be the first Italian American organization authorized to cooperate with the Italian Foreign Ministry in the promotion of the Roots Tourism Initiative in the United States. NIAF will mobilize its social media following of nearly 250,000 and network of affiliate groups to spread awareness of Italy’s invitation for Italian Americans to rediscover their roots. The MOU is part of the Italian government’s Recovery and Resilience Plan and its upcoming “2024 Year of Italian Roots” campaign. “We are proud to partner with MAECI on this important work strengthening bonds with Italian Americans,” stated NIAF President Robert Allegrini. “There is so much opportunity to engage the community, especially youth, with the land their families came from.” NIAF and MAECI share a mission of celebrating the lasting legacy of Italian culture and heritage globally. The agreement focuses on cultural, scientific and economic exchange to benefit both countries.

Originally run by the enigmatic Yongman Kim out of his dry-cleaning business, his franchise eventually amassed 55,000 rental titles. In 2008, facing a changing industry, Mr. Kim offered to give away his collection provided that it stay intact and be available to Kim’s Video members. In a bid to revitalize tourism, the small Italian village of Salemi, Sicily, became home to the archive. But after the initial publicity faded, so too did any sign of the collection. Saturday, November 18 at 4 p.m. CST The Hi-Pointe Theatre Main Auditorium A group of archaeologists explore the black market of historical artifacts. Everyone has their own Chimera, something they try to achieve but never manage to find. For the band of tombaroli (thieves of ancient grave goods and archaeological wonders) the Chimera means redemption from work and the dream of easy wealth. For Arthur, the Chimera looks like the woman he lost, Beniamina. To find her, Arthur challenges the invisible, searches everywhere, goes inside the earth – in search of the door to the afterlife of which myths speak. In an adventurous journey between the living and the dead, between forests and cities, between celebrations and solitudes, the intertwined destinies of these characters unfold, all in search of the Chimera. The film co-stars Josh O’Connor and Isabella Rosselini.

In addition to her role as the owner of Sunset Skin, Hailee also owns SOHA Skin, a day spa located in South City, St. Louis, Missouri, just across from Ted Drewes. As a licensed esthetician, she specializes in skin treatments, spray tans, and more. Meanwhile, Justin is pursuing his dream of becoming a medical student at St. Louis University, with a focus on anesthesiology. The couple currently resides in the heart of St. Louis, sharing a deep passion for exploring new cities to visit family and friends. Their unwavering support for each other dates back to their high school days. Congratulations to the Politeses on their special day!
