New RAI Docufilm Debuted in New York on the 500th Anniversary of the Arrival of Renaissance Navigator Giovanni Da Verrazzano

The film is entitled “Giovanni Da Verrazzano: From the Renaissance to New York City” and is directed by Giuseppe Pedersoli and produced by Beaver Lake Pictures in collaboration with Rai Documentari

A new and revealing documentary about the life of the 16th-century Italian explorer Giovanni Da Verrazzano made its debut in New York City on April 17. On April 17, 1524, the 500th anniversary of Da Verrazzano’s ship’s arrival in what is now New York Harbor, the film premiered.

Senior Italian politicians, executives from the National Italian American Foundation, and the director, Giuseppe Pedersoli, attended a special screening of the film “Giovanni Da Verrazzano: From the Renaissance to New York City” at The Paley Center. The National Italian American Foundation, as well as other U.S. and Italian

institutions, organized the preview.

Tuscany served as the shooting location for almost all of the hourlong docufilm. It features dramatic reenactments starring Carlo Pedersoli Jr. as Da Verrazzano and actor Neri Marcoré as the narrator. It will soon be broadcast on Italy’s Rai 3 channel. The film’s director is Giuseppe Pedersoli, and its Executive Producer is Alan Friedman. The Rai Producer is Gianluca Casagrande.

Despite being five hundred years old, the film offers some revealing insights and a unique historical perspective. The film shows that Da Verrazzano was in many ways more important than Christopher Columbus because he actually set foot in North America and mapped the entire East Coast of North America from North Carolina up to Newfoundland, whereas Columbus stayed in the Caribbean.

A section of the film focuses on Da Verrazzano’s interactions with the indigenous peoples of North America he encountered during his journey. We discover that, unlike the Spanish conquistadors, Da Verrazzano had uniformly friendly relations with the tribes he met along the Eastern Coast of North America and treated them with respect and admiration. He spent two weeks happily trading goods, dining together, and learning about the ways of the Narragansett indigenous people in what is today Rhode Island.

Thanks to the work of Florentine archivist Marco Calafati, the film reveals for

the first time on camera the original March 1523 loan documents from the Gondi Bank, found in the family’s archives. These pages confirm the 700-scudo investment in the Da Verrazzano voyage. This initial funding, together with Antonio Gondi’s personal interventions, would prove decisive in getting the King of France to approve the voyage.

The National Committee on Anniversaries of the Presidenza del Consiglio, the Italian Ministry of Culture, the Region of Tuscany, the National Italian American Foundation, the Italian American Forum, Acsi, and Stefano Ricci SpA collaborated on “Giovanni Da Verrazzano: From the Renaissance to New York City.”

Italian American and Italian Canadian communities.

The Italian Consulate in New York City formalized the partnership by signing a Protocol of Cooperation. NIAF Chairman Bob Carlucci and CIBPA-NF President Gianni Leonetti inked the agreement, committing their organizations to a series of joint initiatives over the next three years.

“We are thrilled to partner with CIBPANF to strengthen the relationship between the Italian American and Italian Canadian communities,” said Carlucci. “By aligning our missions, we can amplify our collective voice and maximize the positive impact on those of Italian descent throughout North America.”

The protocol outlines the following key areas of collaboration:

•Supporting charitable causes that preserve Italian cultural heritage; facilitating the citizenship process for Italian-Americans and Italian-Canadians; promoting “roots tourism” in Italy

•Organizing academic and cultural exchanges between Italy, the U.S., and Canada

•Cross-promoting the accomplishments of notable Italian Americans and Italian Canadians

“CIBPA-NF is proud to join forces with NIAF to connect, empower, and celebrate the achievements of Italians across North America,” said Leonetti. “This partnership opens up invaluable opportunities for our members and stakeholders on both sides of the border.”

Additional cooperation will include an annual student exchange through NIAF’s Ambassador Peter F. Secchia Voyage of Discovery program, co-hosting of major events, collaborative marketing campaigns, and mutual sharing of membership benefits where feasible.

The landmark agreement formalizes the natural affinity between NIAF and CIBPA-NF, while leveraging their respective networks to benefit the greater Italian diaspora in the U.S. and Canada. In the coming months, we will reveal more details about upcoming partnership initiatives.

Tuscany’s Historic Villa Bibbiani to Welcome Guests for Overnight Bookings

The Property, Once Owned by the Medici Family, was Restored by American Healthcare

Founder Dr. George Rapier Nestled in the Montalbano hills of Tuscany sits Villa Bibbiani, a stunning 17thcentury villa and winery once owned by the storied Medici family of Florence. Dr. George Rapier, III, a physician, philanthropist, and entrepreneur who founded WellMed, a renowned healthcare delivery company based in San Antonio, Texas, purchased and restored Villa Bibbiani in 2017. It will complete its second restoration and remodel since purchase, as well as reopen its doors to the selected public for overnight bookings.

Magnificent frescoes and fine period furnishings adorn Bibbiani’s more than 100,000 square feet under the main roof. It boasts one of Italy’s only privately owned consecrated Catholic chapels, an indoor theater with club seating for more than 50 people to enjoy shows and private concerts, outdoor and indoor pools, a sauna, optional spa and massage services, a gym with a personal trainer available upon request, as well as billiard and piano rooms. Outdoors, in the botanical garden, guests will find over 3,000 species of plants and centuriesold trees from around the world, along with vineyards and olive orchards, as well as fruit trees and ancient ruins.

With its prime location in the land of Chianti wine, Villa Bibbiani Winery sits atop the basement of Cosimo Ridolfi, circa 1800. This ancient, state-of-the-art structure was ahead of its time, thanks to running water through a system of storage tanks and a heating system that allowed adequate temperature control during the wine-making process. Dr. Rapier has conserved the original structure, updated the winemaking equipment for contemporary production, and welcomes guests to explore the facilities and sample Villa Bibbiani’s aged and bottled wines. From the 40 hectares of vineyards on the property, Dr. Rapier and his esteemed vintners offer an array of award-winning red wines and other spirits.

“Until now, only a select few have been able to enjoy Villa Bibbiani. With the completion of the latest restoration, I look forward to welcoming guests from all over the world to experience this beautiful region of Italy that has welcomed me with open arms,” said Dr. Rapier. “This home offers so much history that I wanted to bring it alive in its restoration so guests can immerse themselves in learning about the rich culture here. Villa Bibbiani will always belong to the people of Tuscany but will now be open for all people to enjoy.”

Guests will have nothing short of a five-star experience in Villa Bibbiani, and they can expect to enjoy an on-site chef, housekeeping, beauty services, a private butler, and more amongst their spacious suite accommodations.

Festival of Nations, Powered by the International Institute of St. Louis, Returns to Tower

Grove Park August

24-25

The largest multicultural event in the region returns to St. Louis on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25, creating a sense of unity and belonging in our community

The International Institute of St. Louis is excited to announce the return of Festival of Nations to Tower Grove Park on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25. Attended by more than 100,000 people each year, Festival of Nations is the largest multicultural event in the region, featuring artists, performers, food, and retail vendors representing more than 80 countries. This unique event welcomes crowds to an immersive multicultural experience, featuring live entertainment from around the world and sampling international food and flavors. For these two days, the St. Louis community transforms into a global gathering for all people to share their stories, learn about each other’s culture and heritage, and unite around what we all have in common. At Festival of Nations, we welcome the world to St. Louis.

Following last year’s exciting

musical lineup, festival organizers are looking forward to attracting nationally and internationally known recording artists to share the stages with familiar names and local favorites, highlighting our region’s diverse musical interests as the festival grows. We will announce the music and vendor line-ups in early summer.

“Festival of Nations is an event like no other! Throughout the year, we at the International Institute of St. Louis welcome newly arrived refugees and immigrants to the St. Louis community. This event is a moment when the entire community unites in welcoming one another. Everyone is welcome at Festival of Nations, and each person is encouraged to show up as their true selves,” says Arrey Obenson, President and CEO of the International Institute of St. Louis. “When people think of Festival of Nations, they think of the music, food, art, and traditions represented by dozens of cultures. Even more than that, though, is how we are united by our collective humanity in the moments of connection across cultural differences. In this space, all cultures and all people are welcome. The world meets in St. Louis because we are a welcoming community. Festival of Nations is an amplified showcase of that welcoming energy.”

By immersing the community in two days of music, art, and flavors from around the world, the International Institute of St. Louis is supporting its mission to create a welcoming, prosperous, and healthy region for all. Since 1919, the International

Institute of St. Louis has welcomed immigrants and refugees, providing educational opportunities, workforce solutions, resettlement services, and social services on their journey from arriving to thriving here in St. Louis. Since 2010, the International Institute has welcomed more than 14,000 people seeking to resettle in St. Louis, and through its programs and services, it serves thousands more each year with ongoing support.

“We are motivated by the excitement around last year’s event and are building on that momentum. It is such a prideful moment to see so much diverse representation and a community-wide embrace of each artist, performer, chef, and attendee brings. During this weekend, St. Louis really shines,” Obenson continues.

This two-day celebration is a public expression of the International Institute of St. Louis’ work to embrace multiculturalism throughout the community and reinforce the simple truth that what makes us different is what makes us richer and stronger. Applications to be an artist or performer are open until April 30. Food and retail market vendor applications are open until May 31. We will release a preliminary lineup of artists and vendors in May.

Read with Alexandra

“The Family” by Naomi

One of my pet peeves for book reviews is a long synopsis of the plot. I like to dive into a book without any expectations, so I am going to spare you the details. I will follow up with additional reviews. I want to give a little introduction as to why I am starting this column. I’ve always loved to read, but I fell out of love with recreational reading when I became overwhelmed with the required reading in school. Jenna Bush Hager’s book club inspired me in March 2022, and since then, I have read 106 books and counting! I think we do a lot of mindless scrolling on social media, and I have found that reading on my phone kind of scratches that modern-day itch. However, I get so much more out of it. I can honestly say that reading has taught me so much more than I ever did in high school or college, and I am retaining information. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and at the moment, Kristen Hannah is the author who does it best (in my humble opinion).

Naomi Krupitsky’s “The Family” caught my eye because it has elements of what I would pick up in a bookstore on my own without a friend’s recommendation: sisterhood, Italian heritage, and a comingof-age story. It tells the story of two young women in twentieth-century Brooklyn, both daughters of the mafia. We meet Sofia Colicchio and Antonia Russo and follow their lives as they grow into young women. I immediately made a connection with both main characters. Their polar opposite personalities reminded me of my sister and myself. The book fell flat for me because I was looking for Soprano-esque drama. I appreciated the “family is not always blood” theme. Overall, it is worth a read for references to Italian customs and a reminder that family expectations can change the trajectory of a person’s life—for better or for worse.

Follow along on my new project, and feel free to send me book recommendations at alerdh17@gmail.com. For this column, I want to stick with an Italian theme because I am extremely proud of my Italian heritage. Il Pensiero has been in my life since I was born, and this is a new way for me to contribute to the preservation of our culture.
