Mother’s Day, celebrated in America on the second Sunday in May, is a celebration honoring the influence of mothers, motherhood, and maternal bonds in society. The modern Mother’s Day celebration as we know it, began in the United States as recently as the early 20th century. Since then, the holiday has been commercialized and heavily promoted by the floral and greeting card industries. In fact, it is the third largest holiday in the U.S. for sending cards. Traditions on Mother’s Day generally include churchgoing, the distribution of flowers, and family dinners. Carnations have come to represent Mother’s Day since the creator of the holiday, Anna Jarvis, delivered 500 of them at the first celebration in 1908. Do you have any special Mother’s Day traditions? Elves, Cupid, Leprechauns & Trash Cans submitted by Annmarie Lumetta
So, this began one day in July, 2020 when Larry Fuse stopped me on the street and said, “AnnMarie, you have to do something about the trash cans!!” Then in August, over brunch at Carnivore, a group of friends related to The Hill Business Association (HBA), Block Captain Program & the Italia-America Bocce Club met and began chatting about the neighborhood, improvements & trash cans, of course. Thus, a new Hill Business Association committee formed. Our first fundraiser, suggested by Msgr. Bommarito, was the November salsiccia dinner. We raised a net of $2,380 working out of the Bocce Club for the trash can cause and all had a great time!! Thank you everyone for your support on that project. Then, again in November over brunch at Carnivore, due to Covid, we realized there were so many of our neighbors & friends who have not been able to get out … We decided to personally finance this endeavor and began our first visit December 27th dropping off goody bags to let them know, “We miss you & hope you are well.” We did this again on Valentine’s Day & Saint Patrick’s Day weekend. Christina Abel of Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate (Valentine’s Day) & then Ken Gilberg of Herbaria (St. Patrick’s Day) both donated to the cause when I
approached them about purchasing their products. Oh my goodness, the smiles are absolutely priceless!! This, I believe, has been more fulfilling for us as a committee, than those we have visited. The Hill Business Association is currently launching our Passport Project (inspired by a conversation with Miguel Carretero ~ Guido’s) which will pay for the new trash cans. Paul Passanise & Jennifer Jansen, Paul’s assistant, at Royal Papers have been fabulous to work with providing us with the new trash cans!! Paul has been gracious enough to finance our trash can project based on the projected sales of the passport project. John Torreta has been working with us to brand the cans as well. Look for the cans to be delivered sometime in April. We have 40+ businesses participating in the passport project. They are $45 each and are valid until April 1, 2022. Spring is a time for renewal and rebuilding, a time to focus on all things natural, a time to reflect on planet earth’s environmental problems. We consider climate changes, the polar regions and the Brazilian rain forest. However, we rarely

Arguably, Venice is the most unique city in the world, renowned for beauty, building technology, arts and culture, history, entertainment and tourism. Paradoxically this living Carnival may close down for good, a victim of ecological nightmares and economic paradoxes. In 2018, the Swiss governmentsupervised World Economic Forum addressed these types of problems in the Davos Convention which outlines measures to be taken to preserve integrity of historical and cultural centers. My namesake foundation became involved in a subsequent effort to familiarize world youth with its tenets - and in particular, to provide a tentative action plan for youth participation in the effort to safeguard Venice. The fruits of this occurred very recently with a firstof-its kind trans-oceanic Zoom conference connecting Italian high school students to groups of peers in the U.S. The main threat facing historic cultural centers is over-tourism, which
has led to myriad problems. In the case of Venice, for me and my foundation, the most reprehensible situation was the passage and dockage of the great ocean liners (Le Grandi Navi) in the canals and lagoons of Venice. The damage they do to building foundations, the pollution they cause in various ways, the collisions with historic wharfs or other vessels portray a horrifying picture all too evident from the most cursory internet search. These behemoth ships range up to 220,000 in tonnage, 1100 feet in length (almost 4 football fields!) and 200 feet in height. In canal waters, their sight is both surreal and horrific. Fortunately, on March 25th, the Italian government issued a decree banning the monster ships from Venetian waters! This is a temporary measure. A brand new port should be built at a location balancing safety with convenience for tourism. Beyond banning ships, authorities must consider what over-tourism is doing to the life and lifestyles in Venice. In 2019 (prepandemic) over 30 million visitors besieged Venice. That’s more people than visit high ranking Disneyworld, or Atlantic City, and about the same number as visit Niagara Falls, the most visited natural attraction in the U.S. Venetians can hardly maneuver in the area around St. Mark’s Square. Big liners discharge 5,000 passengers at a time at this square. Since these travelers eat and sleep aboard-ship, they contribute almost nothing to the economy of the city, so most businesses in the tourist areas have closed, to be replaced by souvenir
shops! Tourists who don’t spend on-shore is a problem plaguing many historic cities, from Barcelona, Bruges and Dubrovnik to Key West. The urban economy of Venice is being destroyed. The population of the historic center city has declined from 95,000 in the 1980’s to just 55,000 today. Many locals can’t afford to live in the city any more, as a significant (and growing) portion of housing has been converted to bed and breakfast/Airbnb use charging high rents for limited stays. Except in the tourist sector, jobs are scarce. Unhappily, tourism is what drives what’s left of the Venetian economy. Is Venice destined to become a Museum City, otherwise lacking in vitality? What is to be done? Perhaps the solution lies in the employment of engineering, science and artificial intelligence.The new Mose system, a series of dam panels that deploy when high seas are forecast, will, hopefully, end Venice’s perpetual flooding. The main University, Ca’ Foscari in the heart of the historic city, is rapidly developing new research programs to tackle problems of sustainability and resilience of coastal cities. One such initiative, The Bridges project, is ongoing in the U.S, in cooperation with University of Virginia, in the Norfolk seacoast area. Artificial intelligence offers the best key to regulation and control of tourist flow. For example, drone monitoring will bring efficient crowd control to the main squares. Continued on page 8

Finally, with a new port, tourists can be directed to mainland centers when Venice is “overcrowded.” So, will we see death in Venice? There are various groups and agencies working to protect the city. But until Venice joins the polar regions and the rain forests in popular imagination as a main ecological flashpoint, this serene city cannot be saved. US-Italy Environmental Education Zoomcast: A Success
The recent Trans-Atlantic zoomcast was an astounding success. Sponsored by the Republic of Italy’s Education Office in New York City and the Silvio Laccetti Foundation of Fairview, NJ, the webcast focused on the eco-cultural problems facing the city of Venice, Italy. Of particular concern was the terrible effects of the behemoth cruise ships which invade the fragile waters of Venice’s canals and lagoons. Among the conference’s many unique features, was bringing together in REAL TIME, Italian language classes from Lyndhurst High School and Pt. Pleasant Boro High School with counterparts from two Italian high schools in the Venice area. Students, teachers and university researchers shared presentations and research notes. Over 150 persons were in attendance. Topics included: The Dangers of Le Grandi Navi (Cruise Ships) a PowerPoint presentation of Alexa Borino and Gianna Alberti of Lyndhurst High School., and The Effects of Mass Tourism on Venetian Life, by teachers and students from the Algarotti High School. According to Zef Ferreira, spokesperson for the Silvio Laccetti Foundation, a highlight of the Exchange was the cartoon depictions by Roberto Bottazzo (math and physics teacher at Algarotti) which portrayed Venetian scenes before and after the problems of overtourism took hold. Ferreira also pointed to a presentation by researchers from Ca’ Foscari University in the heart of Venice: Coastal Cities and Natural Disasters, as having galvanized the students. Ferreira hails from Hudson

Pleasant students also paid rapt attention to the topic because, albeit on a lesser scale, their oceanfront community is, like Venice, confronting challenges of overtourism in the summer and storm-borne damages year round. According to Dr. Silvio Laccetti, Director of his eponymous foundation, this Zoomcast event “...may have made history by having real-time intercontinental and trans-oceanic classroom learning and sharing for high school students”. In his concluding remarks to the conference, Prof. Laccetti said: “I hope the present discussions will inspire many of you to implement some of the Foundation’s action items for safeguarding ecosystems in Venice, and in your hometowns. Today marks the first stage of a pioneering journey that will have global consequences.” Many bigger, on-line classes will be forthcoming.

La somma di ciò che si mangia durante il giorno può “riempire” la carica della batteria, senza andare oltre, al fine di non superare le quantità di assunzione giornaliera raccomandate. Oltre a fornire informazioni, il sito web mette a disposizione delle aziende agroalimentari, che volontariamente decidono di utilizzare il Nutrinform Battery, una applicazione che consente di generare autonomamente le etichette da apporre sul prodotto. Il progetto Per la realizzazione di questo progetto, guidato da quattro Ministeri (Salute, Sviluppo Economico, Agricoltura e Esteri), sono scesi in campo gli esperti nutrizionisti dell’Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) e del Consiglio per la Ricerca Economica e Alimentare (CREA), ed anche rappresentanti delle associazioni di categoria della filiera agroalimentare e dei consumatori. I parametri di riferimento sui quali vengono tarate le singole batterie (una per ogni singolo elemento critico, vale a dire calorie, grassi totali, grassi saturi, zuccheri e sale) sono quelli europei fissati nella tabella XIII del Regolamento UE n. 1169/2011 - art. 35, che sono peraltro in linea con quelli dei LARN (livelli di riferimento dei nutrienti per la popolazione italiana) da cui si evincono le porzioni determinate sulle base delle evidenze scientifiche nutrizionali disponibili. Il livello di riempimento della batteria corrisponde infatti alla percentuale di quello specifico nutriente che la porzione consigliata dell’alimento apporta alla dieta del consumatore, facendo riferimento alle Assunzioni di Riferimento (parte B dell’Allegato XIII del regolamento UE 1169/2011). Nell’etichetta nutrizionale Nutrinform Battery, che è volontaria e non obbligatoria, ognuna delle 5 batterie offre al consumatore l’indicazione sia percentuale che quantitativa della variabile che rappresenta (calorie, zuccheri ecc.) relativamente a una porzione del prodotto da acquistare. Pertanto, semplicemente guardando ogni singola batteria il consumatore potrà immediatamente rendersi conto della esatta percentuale del nutriente che sta introducendo con la porzione di cibo consumata rispetto alla quantità massima raccomandata, e quindi quanto di quel nutriente gli resta da assumere durante il resto della giornata. ROMA\ aise\ - Si celebra oggi il 76° anniversario della Liberazione dell’Italia dall’occupazione nazista e dal regime fascista. Il Presidente della Repubblica, Sergio Mattarella, si è recato stamane all’Altare della Patria per deporre una corona d’alloro al Milite Ignoto e, tra poco, ospiterà al Quirinale la cerimonia ufficiale. Il 25 aprile del 1945, con gli eserciti alleati alle porte di Milano, il CLNAI (Comitato di Liberazione Alta Italia) diede l’ordine a tutte le formazioni partigiane e gappiste di attaccare i presidi fascisti e nazisti ancora presenti nel Nord Italia. La parola d’ordine era “Arrendersi o perire”. Per l’Italia intera è la fine di un incubo. E anche se la guerra in Europa non potrà dirsi conclusa che ai primi di maggio, resta questa la data più significativa della nostra storia contemporanea. Protagoniste di questo capitolo da subito entrato nei libri di scuola le formazioni partigiane, di vario colore ed estrazione partitica, che versarono il proprio sangue per cacciare l’invasore tedesco e sconfiggere la Repubblica Sociale Italiana, lo Stato fantoccio creato da Mussolini nel settembre del 1943 sulle rive del Lago di Garda per volere di Adolf Hitler. Una data, quella di oggi, che segna la fine di quella che solamente a distanza di molti anni si è cominciata a chiamare con il proprio nome: guerra civile. Dall’Abruzzo al Nord Italia, ogni città, paese, borgo ha il suo monumento ai caduti, la sua targa per commemorare i figli scomparsi prematuramente in uno scontro fratricida o per ricordare un qualche avvenimento legato a quei tragici mesi che vanno dall’armistizio dell’8 settembre 1943 al 25 aprile del 1945. Mesi in cui la furia nazista sconvolse le zone dell’Appennino centrale, mietendo migliaia di vittime tra i civili inermi. Ancora oggi ci sono luoghi rimasti fermi a quel periodo, il cui semplice nome rimanda a storie raccapriccianti di stragi rimaste impunite: Marzabotto, Sant’Anna di Stazzema, Boves e molte altre. Il 25 aprile ha messo fine a tutto questo. E le celebrazioni che si tengono in tutto il Paese servono a ricordare, soprattutto alle nuove generazioni, che non si tratta solamente di un giorno di vacanza, ma di una data dal forte valore simbolico, un monito per tenere a mente quello che è stato, spronandoci tutti a difendere tenacemente una libertà duramente conquistata dai nostri nonni e che noi dobbiamo avere la forza di mantenere e coltivare. CRESCE LA VENDITA DI LIBRI NEL 2021
ROMA\ aise\ - L’editoria libraria italiana continua a crescere anche nei primi tre mesi del 2021, consolidando un trend iniziato nella seconda metà del 2020. Secondo i dati elaborati dall’Associazione Italiana

Editori (AIE), dal 1° gennaio al 28 marzo, le vendite dei libri a stampa a prezzo di copertina nei canali trade (librerie, online e grande distribuzione organizzata) sono cresciute del 26,6% a valore e del 26,7% a copie vendute rispetto allo stesso periodo all’anno precedente. “Siamo di fronte a un incremento importante che si accompagna alla crescita della lettura, come è documentato nel libro bianco del Cepell (nel 2020 sono lettori il 61% degli italiani nella fascia d’età 15-74 anni, contro il 58% dell’anno precedente)”, ha commentato il presidente di AIE Ricardo Franco Levi. “Questi dati confermano la bontà delle politiche di sostegno al settore proposte da tutta la filiera del libro unita, l’Associazione Italiana Bibliotecari (AIB), AIE, Associazione Librai Italiani (ALI), e messe in atto nel 2020 da governo e parlamento. Ci riferiamo in particolare al sostegno della domanda tramite la 18App, la Carta Famiglia, il finanziamento degli acquisti delle biblioteche nelle librerie di prossimità, tutte misure che chiediamo siano confermate e stabilizzate”. La 18App, in particolare, ha confermato la propria efficacia anche nell’avvio del nuovo anno: tra gennaio e febbraio i 18enni hanno utilizzato per l’80% questo strumento per acquisti di libri a stampa, pari complessivamente a 75 milioni di euro. Il 91% degli acquisti sono stati effettuati nelle librerie online. I dati mostrano cambiamenti di grande rilievo nei canali di vendita e nella struttura del mercato. I canali fisici (librerie e grande distribuzione) passano dal 73% del 2019 al 57% di fine 2020, al 55% a marzo di quest’anno. Le librerie online, che rappresentavano il 27% nel 2019 e il 43% nel 2020, raggiungono il 45% nel primo trimestre dell’anno. Le librerie indipendenti, maggiormente presenti nelle periferie e nei piccoli centri, passano dal 22% di fine 2019 al 18% di fine 2020 e, quindi, al 16% di fine marzo. Le librerie di catena, generalmente penalizzate dall’essere soprattutto presenti nei centri cittadini, nelle stazioni, negli aeroporti e nei centri commerciali, sono passate dal 44% del 2019 al 33% nel 2020 al 34% nei primi tre mesi di quest’anno. La grande distribuzione è passata dal 7% del 2019 al 6% del 2020 fino al 5% del primo trimestre 2021. La quota dei piccoli e medi editori, trainata dall’online, è cresciuta costantemente nel corso degli anni passando dal 39,5% del 2011 al 47,5% del 2019, al 50,9% del 2020, fino a toccare il 54,1% tra gennaio e marzo 2021. COVID-19: VIETATO L’INGRESSO IN ITALIA DALL’INDIA ROMA\ aise\ - Il Ministro della Salute, Roberto Speranza, ha firmato ieri, 25 aprile, una nuova ordinanza che vieta l’ingresso in Italia a chi negli ultimi 14 giorni è stato in India per frenare i contagi legati alla nuova variante indiana da Covid-19. “I residenti in Italia – spiega il ministro in una nota sul sito del Ministero - potranno rientrare con tampone in partenza e all’arrivo e con obbligo di quarantena. Chiunque sia stato in India negli ultimi 14 giorni e si trovi già nel nostro Paese è tenuto a sottoporsi a tampone contattando i dipartimenti di prevenzione”. “I nostri scienziati – aggiunge l’esponente dell’Esecutivo - sono al lavoro per studiare la nuova variante indiana. Non possiamo abbassare la guardia. Venerdì è stato il giorno record per casi a livello mondiale con 893.000 positivi di cui 346.000 proprio in India”.
