Mother’s Day by Courtney Kamm
Mother’s Day, celebrated in America on the second Sunday in May, is a celebration honoring the influence of mothers, motherhood, and maternal bonds in society. The modern Mother’s Day celebration as we know it, began in the United States as recently as the early 20th century. Since then, the holiday has been commercialized and heavily promoted by the floral and greeting card industries. In fact, it is the third largest holiday in the U.S. for sending cards. Traditions on Mother’s Day generally include churchgoing, the distribution of flowers, and family dinners. Carnations have come to represent Mother’s Day since the creator of the holiday, Anna Jarvis, delivered 500 of them at the first celebration in 1908. Do you have any special Mother’s Day traditions? Let us know at courtney@ilpensiero.net.

Modfiche Market by Courtney Kamm
Looking for some new decor for your house or apartment, but don’t want it to look like what everyone else has? One local St. Louisan has taken her family’s generation of love for antique shopping and turned it into a market. Carrie Anne, owner and creator of Modfiche Market, grew up antique shopping with her mom, grandma, and aunts who all shared a love for different vintage styles. Carrie has continued to antique shop, but now collects kitchen wares, old office supplies, and other knick-knacky objects to repurpose and sell to someone looking for something fun for their shelves. In her market you can find quirky bread tins, different jars, and even the occasional coffee mug which she has turned into an item for any decor style.
