Father’s Day by Courtney Kamm
Father’s Day, celebrated this year on June 20th, is a day honoring fatherhood and the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic countries of Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19th as Saint Joseph’s Day since the middle ages. In America, we always celebrate on the third Sunday of June. America’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, just over a year after the nation’s first Mother’s Day in May. One definitely inspired the other! While Father’s Day is not normally met with the same sentiment of flowers and chocolate as Mother’s Day is, economists estimate Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father’s Day gifts. St. Louis citizens celebrate American values while elected officials denounce them
At an Aldermanic meeting on Friday, April 30, a small group of elected city officials listened to powerful and patriotic testimonies from a Venezuelan doctor whose partner was stabbed in a hospital, and a journalist who grew up oppressed in the Soviet Union. After hearing a courtesy resolution to support Loyalty Day – a national holiday recognized by each U.S. President since 1958 and celebrating the democratic ideals woven into our Constitution – a small group of Alderpersons refused to recognize the holiday and the sponsor’s sixteen invited guests. Courtesy resolutions are rarely contested, as they are designed to recognize a special event, holiday, organization or individual public servants, but during the meeting it became clear that a small group of Alderpersons, instead of voting in favor of Loyalty Day, chose to create a separate and retaliatory resolution supporting International Workers Day. Often referred to as May Day, this date was chosen for political reasons by the Marxist International Socialist Congress and is offensive to city residents like Ms. Lena Fish, who grew up in the former Soviet Union and shared her testimony during the April 30 meeting. Ms. Fish explained that in the Soviet Union, May Day was a mandatory celebration of worker solidarity with the goal of uniting worldwide workers for a socialist revolution. People were forced to gather and praise the party leaders. “On May 1 we were celebrating the workers solidarity day,” she said. Ms. Fish explained that for her, Loyalty Day is one of the most important American holidays. Following her testimony, however, one of the Alderpersons called it “a waste of time.” As another invited guest and
volunteer director of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation – St. Louis Commission (VOC-STL), I was not surprised by this comment or by the vote. Many of these Alderpersons have spoken ill about my organization, my fellow leaders, and our supporters. But I was surprised to see that only a handful of Alderpersons came to the defense of the invited guests and of their peer who introduced a courtesy resolution; and I was surprised to see the local media disregard these residents as well. VOC-STL hosted a successful Loyalty Day celebration on May 1 with nearly 130 people in attendance. As we did this, a Maoist revolutionary group of nine individuals, dressed in red and waving red flags, came to disrupt our peaceful celebration in favor of International Workers Day. Our event included guest speakers such as Colonel Jack Jackson, a retired Marine and decorated veteran, VOC-STL leadership, and local residents who have suffered under socialism and communism and never want to endure it again. At this event, our Loyalty Day speakers were heckled, harassed, and told to “drop dead.” These same speakers – including those from Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Russia, and China – respected the protesters’ right to be there and even invited them to join as event attendees. On April 30, President Joe Biden issued a Proclamation in support of Loyalty Day, which he explained “does not mean fealty to any one leader or political party, nor does it mean unthinking praise or willful
ignorance of our shortcomings — it means loyalty to our common ideals, and to one another. It means standing united as one people, even as we cherish our differences and respect dissent.” President Biden recognized May 1 as a time to celebrate the democratic Continued on page 6

Prairie is a defining landscape of the United States. From the prairies of the Great Plains and Midwest to the glades, coastal grasslands, and other related communities throughout the country, grasslands have
benefited Americans in countless ways. Today, our native grassland legacy has been dramatically reduced to scattered remnants of its once vast 160-million-acre domain across North America. These remnants, from pocket prairies with their beauty and diversity of plants, insects, birds, and other grassland wildlife, to the larger tracts that support cattle ranching, antelope, bison, and other large animals, remain vitally important to people for their contributions to water quality, soil health, carbon storage, forage protection in drought, and wildlife and pollinator habitat. In 2016, the Missouri Prairie Foundation established National Prairie Day, registered on the National Day Calendar as the first Saturday in June. The goals of this special day are to enhance public awareness of what prairie is, educate about its value, and motivate and inspire all to support prairie conservation, restoration, and enjoyment. This year, National Prairie Day is Saturday, June 5, 2021. “All are invited to join us in recognizing National Prairie Day,” said Carol Davit, executive director of the Missouri Prairie Foundation, a 55-year-old non-profit prairie conservation organization and nationally accredited land trust. “National Prairie Day provides a day of focus across the United States to inspire learning, appreciation, and exploration of our national prairie legacy. Flag Day by Courtney Kamm
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress took a break from writing the Articles of Confederation to pass a resolution ultimately creating what we know today as the American flag. That is why on June 14 of every year we celebrate Flag Day, to celebrate the anniversary of the Stars and Stripes. Here are some fun facts about the flag you might not know: The lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” are taken from a patriotic poem written by Francis Scott Key and were set to the tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven,” a popular British drinking song. The original 50-star design on the flag was created by a high school student, Bob Heft, for a school project which he presented to President Eisenhower after Hawaii joined the union. Etiquette calls for American flags to be illuminated by sunlight or another light source while on display — which is why we fly our flags outside. St. Anthony’s Day by Courtney Kamm
St. Anthony, son of a nobleman and teacher of friars, is known as the patron saint of the illiterate and the poor, the finder of lost things, and the saint of small requests. He is also known around Portugal, Spain, and Brazil as a marriage saint because there are legends of him reconciling couples. We celebrate the saint with the Feast Day of St. Anthony on June 13 every year to commemorate his death in 1231. Celebrations include street fairs, fireworks, and huge crowds of people in piazzas. Some young people will write letters to Anthony, a marriage saint, asking him for help in finding them a partner. In his hometown of Lisbon, it is a tradition that 13 couples get married on Saint Anthony’s Day with all the expenses paid for by city council. Some masses to celebrate St. Anthony’s Day may have alternate rules this year due to health guidelines and precautions, so make sure to check your church’s schedule before planning your celebration.

Celano 19 Aprile 2021- Dopo la campagna di promozione e valorizzazione della Patata del Fucino IGP condotta nelle scuole a livello nazionale in collaborazione con Findus, l’AMPP ha riservato particolare attenzione a quelle del proprio territorio ed è stata la volta dell’Istituto Rwanda Evolution ETS di Celano (AQ). Un istituto di scuola paritaria primaria e per l’infanzia, che si caratterizza per aver attivato un progetto di scambio culturale tra i loro bambini e quelli di una scuola ruandese, favorendo lo studio dell’inglese già dalle classi dell’infanzia. Un’esperienza che porterà i piccoli a parlare della Patata del Fucino IGP anche ai loro amici lontani con cui scambiano i loro interessi, agevolati anche dal materiale didattico ricevuto dall’AMPP che in questa occasione ha potuto finalmente avere il piacere di consegnarlo direttamente ai bambini che finalmente erano in presenza. Si è trattato di quadernoni per le diverse classi, il giornalino di Patatopoli, di grande formato, abbinato ad un inserto con cui giocare a fare gli ecologisti. Strumenti di intrattenimento dei piccoli concepiti per avvicinare i bambini alle tematiche dell’ambiente, della sostenibilità e della sana alimentazione con notizie, curiosità, quiz e ricette. L’azione dell’AMPP viene resa ancora più incisiva grazie all’apporto dato, in termini di adesione all’iniziativa, dal presidente dell’Istituto Walter Rubeo, dalla consigliera Anna Maria Bacchetta e dall’ex console Rwanda Francesco Alicicco. Rodolfo Di Pasquale, presidente dell’AMPP, ritiene che questo programma nelle scuole sia di grande utilità per creare nei futuri cittadini il senso di appartenenza ad un territorio, come quello del Fucino e dell’Abruzzo intero, capace di conferire ai prodotti che vengono coltivati un valore dato proprio dal luogo di provenienza.

L’Istituto Cinematografico dell’Aquila “La Lanterna Magica” torna nel settore editoriale con la pubblicazione del libro Il Comico sentimentale: Leo McCarey incontra Laurel & Hardy di Enzo Pio Pignatiello. Infatti, “La Lanterna Magica” vanta una tradizione nell’editoria con le collane “Mestieri e tecniche del Cinema”, “Saggi e documenti” e altri volumi specializzati sulla costruzione dell’immagine, come il volume fotografico “L’Aquila” di Gianni Berengo Gardin. Il volume si inserisce nel Progetto SOS Stanlio e Ollio, che l’Istituto Cinematografico porta avanti già da qualche anno, ed intende analizzare per la prima volta l’incontro artistico tra il duo comico Stanlio e Ollio ed il regista Leo McCarey, una delle figure hollywoodiane più apprezzate tra gli anni ‘20 e ‘50. L’evento è realizzato con la collaborazione della Biblioteca Regionale “Salvatore Tommasi” ed è inserito nel programma nazionale de Il Maggio dei Libri.
Tirocini in Ambasciata: il nuovo bando Maeci - Crui
ROMA\ aise\ - È stato pubblicato ieri il bando per il terzo ciclo di tirocini per l’anno 2021 (13 settembre – 10 dicembre 2021) presso le Rappresentanze diplomatiche italiane all’estero. Promosso all’interno della convenzione tra Farnesina, Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca e la Fondazione CRUI (Conferenza dei Rettori delle Università Italiane), il programma di tirocini mira a integrare il percorso formativo universitario dello studente con un’esperienza concreta che permetta una conoscenza diretta delle attività istituzionali della Farnesina all’estero. Dato il preminente collegamento dei tirocini curriculari con le carriere internazionali, i tirocini presso le Ambasciate, i Consolati e le Rappresentanze permanenti presso le Organizzazioni Internazionali sono destinati agli studenti - di età non superiore ai 28 anni - iscritti ai corsi di laurea magistrale o a ciclo unico che consentono l’accesso alla carriera diplomatica. I tirocini curriculari presso gli Istituti italiani di Cultura sono invece estesi anche agli studenti iscritti ad altri corsi di laurea, come viene specificato da ciascun bando. Gli studenti hanno diritto a un rimborso spese, corrisposto dalle Università di appartenenza, nella misura minima di 300 euro al mese, salvo diversamente disposto dal bando. Il bando per i tirocini che si svolgeranno dal 13 settembre al 10 dicembre è pubblicato sul sito www.tirocinicrui.it. Le candidature potranno essere inviate tramite applicativo entro lunedì 21 giugno. Scende anche il numero dei ricoverati in terapia intensiva, nonostante i 46 ingressi odierni (ieri 48), in totale 1.323, 59 meno di ieri. Si abbassa anche il numero di ricoverati con sintomi, oggi 8.557, 393 meno di ieri. Così come le persone in isolamento domiciliare che oggi sono 258.265, 7.842 meno di ieri. 166 le persone decedute (ieri 110), per un totale che sale a 125.501. Sale anche il numero totale dei dimessi e guariti, che arriva a 3.804.246, 11.348 più di ieri. I nuovi contagiati registrati oggi, invece, sono 3.224 (ieri 2.490). Di questi, 505 in Lombardia, 410 in Campania e 372 in Sicilia. I tamponi eseguiti oggi sono
stati solo 252.646 (ieri 107.481). Il tasso di positività è di 1,28%. Questi i dati aggiornati sulla diffusione del coronavirus in Italia, comunicati oggi pomeriggio dal Ministero della Salute. I casi totali registrati nel nostro Paese dall’inizio dell’epidemia arrivano a 4.197.892. Infine, il numero di dosi di vaccino somministrate in Italia che, secondo l’ultimo aggiornamento di oggi, 25 maggio, arrivano a 31.549.071. Gli italiani che hanno completato il ciclo vaccinale, ricevendo anche la seconda dose, sono 10.511.111, il 17,74% della popolazione. (aise)
Eliminare la quarantena per chi arriva dal Nord America: Nissoli (Fi) interroga Speranza e Di Maio
ROMA\ aise\ - Deputata di Forza Italia eletta in Centro e Nord America, Fucsia Nissoli ha depositato una interrogazione ai Ministri della Salute e degli Esteri, Speranza e Di Maio, “per chiedere di eliminare la quarantena per i cittadini italiani, già vaccinati, che tornano in Italia dai Paesi extraeuropei dell’area D che sono considerati a basso rischio epidemiologico”. Infatti, spiega la parlamentare, “come chiedono un gruppo di cittadini italiani residenti in USA in una petizione, non ci sono ragioni per mantenere la quarantena ed essa è “ingiusta e priva di logica scientifica, visto che essa invece è stata tolta per i cittadini EU anche non vaccinati, i quali senz’altro rappresentano un pericolo maggiore di quanto lo siano i cittadini italiani vaccinati provenienti dagli Stati Uniti”. Auspico – conclude Nissoli – che si proceda al più presto a rimuovere questo ostacolo che rende difficoltose le visite ai familiari che sono in Italia”. (aise)
