Try the New Zanti’s Deli Now

There’s a new deli in town! About a month ago, Roberto Zanti opened Zanti’s Deli located at 181 Concord Plaza Shopping Center. Zanti is the former chef-owner of Roberto’s Trattoria, also located within the Concord Plaza Shopping Center.

The menu at Zanti’s Deli includes almost a dozen to-go sandwiches, including a meatball sub made with Zanti’s homemade meatballs. You’ll also find sides, salads, and two specials from Taranto, Italy, Zanti’s hometown - The Panzerotto and The Focaccina. You can also find prepared food to-go like lasagna, meatballs, chicken parm, and a wide variety of meats and cheeses imported from Italy.

While you are welcome to come in and order your meals to go, you can call ahead to pre-order, and online ordering is available as well. Find the full menu and place your order at zantisdeli.com.

Celebrating Italian American Heritage Around The Country

In 2008, Colorado debuted their Italian American Heritage license plates for any person in the state to register their vehicle with and showcase their Italian roots.

Italian immigrants had a significant presence in the state of Colorado dating all the way back to Columbus Day which originated in 1905. In 1922, one in five Colorado residents were from Italy, and today Italian Americans number over 200,000 and make up about five percent of the state’s population—a testament to the community’s legacy in the state.

If you live in the state of Colorado and want to purchase these plates, visit your local DMV for details. And if you have them, we would love to share your story with our community! Send a note to courtney@ilpensiero.net.

The new space will be located at 1300 Big Bend Road in the Twin Oaks shopping center and will serve all of their signature dishes, including the spiedini, pizzas, pastas, and veal and chicken dishes.

The July 7 concert is dedicated to opera singer Demetrio “Danny” Meduri who rests in Maple Grove Cemetery. Born in Italy in 1890, who emigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900s, tenor Meduri went on to perform in many opera houses and in touring companies and was a friend of Enrico Caruso.

A research study in the musicological field led the pianists Buttiero and Frumento to discover the score “The Divine Comedy for piano four hands” by Cesare San Fiorenzo, original for piano four hands. The score, forgotten for more than 100 years, offers extraordinary and evocative melodies very close to the operatic world of the great composer Giuseppe Verdi. The two musicians developed a strong bond of friendship and often met in the city of Genoa. The program includes a transcription of Opera arias by Verdi taken from Rigoletto and Trovatore and a Sonatina by Manzino, a composer from Savona, the city where the two pianists live.

In 2022 Elena and Anita recorded the San Fiorenzo’s Divine Comedy in the CD entitled “Non sembiava imagine che tace.”

Elena Buttiero graduated in piano at the Turin’s Conservatoire ‘G. Verdi’, she held concerts in several Italian cities, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, France, Romania, Czech Republic, Serbia, United States, Canada, Tanzania, Argentine and Uruguay. She published two CDs as harpist with Birkin Tree: Continental Reel and A Cheap present. With Carlo Aonzo, she published Il mandolino italiano nel Settecento and Fantasia poetica. The Duo was awarded with the Ligurian Region Price, Cultural section. In 2012, she recorded the CD Arethusa Consortium for two Celtic harps repertoire and plectrums, Saluti dall’Italia in 2013 and Lontano nel mondo in 2015 devoted to Luigi Tenco’s songs. In 2021 she published the CD The Baroque Hurdy-Gurdy at the French Royal Court with Francesco Giusta. In the didactic field she published for Carisch/Hal Leonard editor solfege and piano methods. She is the artistic director of the Mozart Savona Association and of the Allegro con Moto Association.

Anita Frumento graduated from the Conservatory of Cuneo and obtained a Level II Academic Diploma in Piano and Chamber Music with full marks and honors, studying at the Conservatory of Genoa and at the Conservatory of Piacenza. At the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland she completed a Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy and attended the Elementary Music Education seminars held by Silvia Klemm. She has participated in important festivals in Italy and abroad, collaborating with the Ensemble Nuove Musiche of Savona, the Savona Symphony Orchestra, the ‘900presente Ensemble and the Research and Development Division of the Conservatory of Italian Switzerland,

premiering some works by emerging contemporary composers. She has been a teacher at the MAT Artistic Center in Lugano (Switzerland) and the Teaching Director of the Classical Music Section. She has been a piano teacher at the Liceo Musicale in Busto Arsizio (near Milan). In September 2023, she will be a piano teacher at the Liceo Musicale di Albenga in Liguria. She is a managing member of the APS Nuovi Contesti Sonori in Clusone (Bg).

The Field House Museum Presents a New Exhibition

The Power of the Press: The Newspaper World Eugene Field Inherited

Exhibit: The Power of the Press: The Newspaper World Eugene Field Inherited Venue: Field House Museum, 634 South Broadway, Saint Louis, MO 63102

Dates: Now - February 18, 2024

The Power of the Press, the newest exhibit in the Eugene Field Library, dives into the cutthroat newspaper world of mid19th century St. Louis, when the pages flying off the printing press could sway elections, influence policy, incite mobs, and ignite duels to the death.

Among the city’s journalistic giants were former revolutionaries from the German states battling to rid their new home of the evils of slavery, fierce Unionists lobbying against Missouri’s secessionist legislators in their columns during the Civil War, and city boosters willing to twist the truth during the General Strike of 1877 in order to keep industry booming.

Just like today, the power of the press can swing both ways. Good journalism can shed light on inequalities, unmask corruption, and keep citizens well-informed. But bad journalism is equally capable of demonizing the vulnerable, distorting facts, and deceiving citizens. Visit the Field House Museum to explore how journalists of the past chose to exercise their power.

nurtured by deep New England roots. The Special Collections department at the Jones Library in Amherst, Massachusetts, is home to a collection of over 1,000 artifacts that span four generations of Field Family history. Speaker Katherine Whitcomb, who serves as Interim Head of Special Collections at the Jones Library, will use the Field Family collection to explore the Fields’ connection to Amherst and bring the 19th-century town that the Field children knew to life.

This program is free with limited availability in person and on Zoom. Reservations must be made in advance through Eventbrite, by calling the Museum at 314-421-4689, or by emailing info@fieldhousemuseum.org.

About the Speaker

Katherine Whitcomb is the Interim Head of Special Collections at the Jones Library in Amherst, Mass. A 2019 MLIS graduate of Simmons University in Boston, she has been working in Special Collections for five years and, as a result, has many random tidbits of Amherst history wandering around her brain! A native of Western Massachusetts, she lives in her small hometown, which has ties to another branch of the Field Family.

Amherst’s public library, The Jones Library, was incorporated in 1919 after the Town of Amherst received a bequest from Samuel Minot Jones. Originally located on the second floor of the old Amherst House hotel, the Jones commenced operation in 1921. Construction on a separate building began in 1927 after a devastating fire forced the library to move to temporary quarters in the nearby Whipple House. On November 1, 1928, the Jones Library opened its doors at its current location, which was built to

look like a residence. Renovations of the building took place in the late 1960s, and an addition was added in 1993. They are currently in the design process for their latest expansion and renovation project.

Italian Citizenship Concierge

A St. Louis native is headed home for a visit. Jennifer Sontag, who for over 20 years owned boutiques, The Time, Annata, and the Stork’s Nest, which catered to local and national clients such as Michelle

Obama and Madeline Albright, has been living a new life on the opposite side of the world in Sicily, Italy as a dual U.S. and Italian citizen.

Jennifer moved to Sicily over three years ago and launched Italian Citizenship Concierge, a bespoke agency that helps people searching for Italian citizenship through jure sanguinis. Jennifer feels that her move to Italy was about so much more than a new passport, but about a new life.

Jennifer knows what her clients are going through, since she’s been through it firsthand. Jennifer also has degrees in social work and social and behaviorial science, which set Italian Citizenship Concierge apart. Jennifer is with her clients every step of the way through the ups and downs of the process.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jennifer to get to know her a little better.

Describe a typical day for you.

I start my mornings with a refreshing 60-minute yoga class at Torre Alba overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea followed by a walk on the lungomare to my favorite cafe in the piazza for a cornetto and coffee before returning home to start my workday. I typically work for 3-4 hours each morning on clients’ paperwork and residency applications. In the afternoon, I treat myself to a feast of local, seasonal vegetables with a simple pasta con aglio e olio on the terrace under the shadows of the Sicilian mountains, followed by a little nap to recharge. After nap time, I take calls from people interested in having their citizenship

recognized, explaining the process and answering questions.

Come the evening, I either work (Monday - Wednesday) or enjoy an evening on the town. There is always something to do: operas, concerts, fashion shows, holiday festivals, and when there is not a community activity, I’m at dinner with friends, taking walks along the sea, or binging on my favorite streaming services. No day is complete without a walk with my rescue Jack Russel, as well.

How do you think your customers and potential customers view you?

I believe my clients at Italian Citizenship Concierge see me as their trusted partner who is there to support and guide them, and provide a little fun along the way.

What makes you tick?

Growth and change. I am a lifelong learner and believe in investing in continuing to learn and develop myself while supporting others on their journey.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

The biggest challenge about my job is how Italian laws are implemented. The law granting citizenship is very vague, leaving all 8000 comunes and every consulate to interpret the law as they see fit. Since each application is a new adventure, no two will rarely go exactly the same.

What can your teammates say about you?

I’m full of ideas and good at building businesses. But at the same time, I’m creative, fun, and flexible to new ideas and transformation and that’s what makes a good team.

What do you wish you would have known that you know now?

I wish I had realized how much getting my Italian citizenship would change my life. I could never have dreamed I would live the life I have today. My hope in our venture is to help as many people achieve their dream, as well.
