The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) extends its warmest congratulations to Congressman Mike Johnson on his re-election as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. Speaker Johnson, who first assumed this role in October 2023, was re-elected on January 3, 2025, continuing his historic tenure as the third consecutive Italian American to hold this prestigious position.
“The re-election of Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House reinforces an extraordinary period of Italian American leadership in one of our nation’s highest offices,” said NIAF Chairman Robert Carlucci. “To witness three consecutive Italian American Speakers of the House demonstrates the remarkable contributions our community continues to make to American public service. We could not be prouder of this achievement and the incredible leadership emerging from the Italian American community.”
Speaker Johnson, who represents the 4th District of Louisiana, carries forward a proud Italian American heritage through his maternal grandfather, a Sicilian immigrant. His roots in Louisiana reflect
a significant chapter in Italian American history, as Sicilian immigrants first came to the region in the late 19th century to work in the sugarcane fields, establishing a vibrant community that continues to enrich the cultural fabric of the Gulf Coast today.
This historic succession of Italian American Speakers reflects the deep commitment to public service that has long been a hallmark of the Italian American community. Speaker Johnson follows the distinguished leadership of his immediate predecessors, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (DCA), marking an unprecedented era of Italian American representation in this vital constitutional role.

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) is pleased to announce the Italian region of Lazio as its designated Region of Honor for 2025. This historic region, home to Rome, the capital of Italy,
and steeped in profound significance, marks a momentous year as it coincides with both the Jubilee Year and NIAF’s 50th Anniversary.
“NIAF is thrilled to celebrate the extraordinary Lazio region during this landmark year,” said NIAF President Robert Allegrini. “From its unparalleled historical heritage to its vibrant modern essence, Lazio embodies the depth and dynamism of Italian excellence.”
“I am glad and honored that Lazio will be the 2025 NIAF Region of Honor. I am sure that this circumstance will help to boost our already flourishing relations with the United States and that it will be useful to raise awareness on all that our region has to offer in terms of beauty and heritage, but also in the field of high technology and innovation,” added President of the Region Lazio Francesco Rocca.
The region offers an extraordinary tapestry of experiences that spans millennia of human civilization. Lazio stands as a testament to historical continuity, serving as the heartland of pivotal civilizations: the birthplace of the Etruscan civilization, the central stage of the Roman Republic, the epicenter of the Roman Empire, the core of the Papal States, a key territory of the Kingdom of Italy, and now a vibrant part of the Italian Republic.
From the rolling hills of the countryside to the architectural marvels of its urban centers, Lazio represents a

About NIAF
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) is a non-profit organization based in the United States that promotes the Italian culture and heritage. Founded in 1975, NIAF has been a leading advocate for Italian Americans, preserving their legacy and promoting their contributions to the United States.
Lega Serie A USA has announced the renewal of its community partnership with Street Soccer USA, a non-profit organization that fights poverty and strengthens communities through soccer in cities across the United States.
The long-running partnership serves as a cornerstone for ‘Serie A Calcio in the Community,’ a program dedicated to fostering positive social impact and empowering young people through their relationship with soccer across North America.
In May 2023, Lega Serie A and Street Soccer USA opened the Teddy van Beuren Street Soccer Park and Learning Center at Community School 55 in the Bronx, New York City, creating a space that is accessible to the entire local community, allowing students to learn to play soccer while developing important social and educational skills.
Two branded Street Soccer USA and Lega Serie A pitches are complemented by a Digital Media Center powered by Lega Serie A. The center runs programs to educate young people on the proper use of digital platforms, content creation, and production.
The Street Soccer USA partnership has also utilized career panels, which provide insight from a range of professionals in various fields, including sports management, coaching, marketing, and media. In April 2024, a career panel at Street Soccer USA’s NY Chapter kicked off with a surprise guest: six-time Serie A champion and World Cup winner Alessandro del Piero.
Serie A Calcio in the Community will work with Street Soccer USA on fundraising initiatives and further career panels in cities served by the nonprofit across the United States.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Street Soccer USA, which does a truly incredible job in providing programming for underserved communities across America,” said Andy Mitchell, CEO and Managing Director of Lega Serie A USA. “The Serie A Calcio in the Community program is central to our efforts to leverage the profile and platform of Italian soccer to inspire the next generation, and we’re excited to see the difference we can make in collaboration with our nonprofit partners.”
Street Soccer USA provides an
alternative to the pay-to-play model of youth soccer in the United States for the 11 million youth living at or below the poverty line.
“We’re delighted to continue our relationship with Serie A, which has provided a fantastic level of support for our programming and facilities,” said Lawrence Cann, Founder and CEO of Street Soccer USA. “This partnership will continue to benefit our underserved communities through the power of the beautiful game.”
This partnership marks the latest step in the Serie A Calcio in the Community program, which highlights the league’s dedication to making a positive social impact and empowering young people by harnessing the global platform of Italy’s premier professional soccer league.
As part of Calcio in the Community, Lega Serie A USA partners with the New York City nonprofit organization South Bronx United and the Pulisic Stomping Grounds to organize career panels, volunteer events, and soccer competitions, using the world’s favorite sport as a vehicle for change for underserved communities in North America.
South Bronx United strives to promote educational achievement, health and wellness, and character development through activities on and off the soccer field, annually serving over 1,700 residents between the ages of four and 24.
Serie A Calcio in the Community works with South Bronx United’s Academy program to tailor career panels to the community’s needs. These panels provide insight from a range of professionals in various fields, including sports management, coaching, marketing, and media. Lega Serie A is also working with South Bronx United on a Volunteer Day, and other fundraising projects to benefit the Bronx’s underserved communities.

Serie A Calcio in the Community has also joined forces with PUMA and Christian Pulisic to engage with the youth community in Little Havana, Miami, at the Pulisic Stomping Grounds. At this location, local youth have had the opportunity to train with Serie A Elite coaches and learn about working in soccer on and off the field from executives and leadership at Serie A and AC Milan.

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) is proud to announce that its strong financial health and ongoing effectiveness and reliability have helped it earn a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator. This rating designates NIAF as an official “Give with Confidence” charity, indicating that our organization is using its donations effectively based on Charity Navigator’s comprehensive criteria that go beyond financials to reflect the work charities do. Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest charity evaluator, providing donors
with thorough and credible ratings of more than 230,000 organizations. Since 2001, the organization has been an unbiased and trusted source of information for more than 11 million donors annually.
Charity Navigator analyzes overall nonprofit health and performance based on four key areas: Leadership & Adaptability to help donors understand if a charity has clarity of purpose, Accountability & Finance to explain if they are transparent and fiscally capable, Culture & Community to show how they engage with their constituents, and Impact & Results to explain what they have accomplished.
“We are delighted to provide NIAF with third-party accreditation that validates their operational excellence,” said Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “The Four-Star Rating is the highest possible rating an organization can achieve. We are eager to see the good work that NIAF can accomplish in the years ahead.”
“Our Four-Star Charity Navigator rating is further validation that our supporters can trust our commitment to good governance and sound financial stewardship,” said Robert V. Allegrini, NIAF President. “We hope it will introduce our work to new supporters who can help us advance our mission to preserve, promote and protect the Italian American heritage and culture.”
As NIAF moves into 2025, the Foundation will continue its vital work of providing scholarships to Italian American students, supporting cultural programs that
celebrate Italian American heritage, and fostering strong cultural and economic ties between Italy and the United States. NIAF’s rating and other information about charitable giving are available free of charge on charitynavigator.org.

A four-year track and cross-country (XC) star at Stillwater High in the Upstate Capital Region of New York, Anthony Zazzaro, a high honors student, is used to bucking fierce headwinds. Stillwater is a very small school (graduating class of around 70) with a strong athletic tradition. Nevertheless, the XC team had only two members this past year. For Anthony, it means running and training alone, close mentoring by his Coach, Shawn McClements and plenty of support from his townsfolk for whom he has become a familiar sight running in all kinds of weather - all year long.
Coach McClements comments:
“Anthony and I have a very holistic coachathlete relationship. For us, it’s always been about advancing the whole person, because Cross-Country is very mentally and spiritually demanding. Moments racing alone in the backwoods test a runner as he confronts obstacles.”
Why has Anthony continued, year after year, in these stringent conditions? To answer, just know this about the young man. He has set high standards for himself. He
has no Olympic dreams, but he does want to perform to his maximum potential - to be the best as his own champion. Commenting on his abilities, coach McClements states: “There is a remarkable cadence to his running; you notice how effortless and fluid his motions are. He’s a natural!” He was the first and only Stillwater XC runner ever to advance through the States competition to the NY State Federation Championships, which he did in 2022, 2023 and 2024. After the 2024 season, he won the Class C State Silver Medal.
Anthony Zazzaro exemplifies the qualities of Fortitude, Perseverance, Bravery and Faith. These were learned and nourished by his family. From his father, Mark, grandson of immigrants from Calabria, Italy, Anthony inherited the work ethic common to Italian Americans. From his Puerto Rican mother, Diane, Anthony understood the value of community service and engagement. She attended Perth Amboy (NJ) High School where she participated in every student club imaginable and was President of her class. Anthony’s most cherished and poignant moment in racing was competing in the Kelly’s Angels Mother’s Day Race in 2023 at the age of 15. Kelly’s Angels was founded by Mark Mulholland, an area media personality, to honor and memorialize his wife Kelly who passed from cancer in 2007 at the age of 37. Among the many, many programs they run is the Mothers’s Day Race. Kelly’s Angels was well known to Anthony who had been a beneficiary and contributor to their outreaches, since his
mother was suffering from cancer herself. The race in 2023 was supremely special to Anthony. He ran to honor his mom, who had been the major force and fan motivating her son to succeed, taking him to practices and events as a child, gently prodding him to get up and running on those cold weekend mornings when other teens would nestle in bed for a few more hours. In this May of 2023, Diane Zazzaro was at the end of her heroic two-year battle with cancer.
Anthony set out to win the race for his mom, and so he did! As he recounted, during that effort his heart was breaking, but pumping harder than ever. “Every breath, every step I took, I wanted it for her.”
In a wheel chair, his mom witnessed her son’s Mother’s Day tribute to her. It was to be one of her final shining experiences. Three days later, she passed away.
Devastated but unbroken by his loss, young Anthony dedicated his racing career to Diane. And so it is, now, two years later, he runs with purpose, commitment and unbreakable resolve, pursuing personal excellence.
And, in this difficult situation, running against the wind, Anthony is blessed and encouraged by the memory of all the “Kellys” who left their families much too early. Sunrise or sunset, the cold of dusk and the heat of mid-day are part of the continuing cycle of training, competing and achieving. And so, just recently he handily won the Springfield, Massachusetts. Invitational to begin his indoor track season. There is Continued on page 10

more to come. Much more!
But Anthony doesn’t run alone. He has many angels on his shoulders to propel him ever onward.

Crystal King writes immersive stories that spring from her extensive research and knowledge of—as well as lifelong passion for—Italian food, culture and history. Her historical novels, Feast of Sorrow and The Chef’s Secret, showcased the foods of those times as she vividly brought to life her characters based on real-life chefs.
King’s third novel, IN THE GARDEN OF MONSTERS (MIRA; publication date: September 24, 2024) is a daring new direction for the culinary novelist. It’s a Gothic reimagining of the classic myth of Persephone and Hades (called the Roman Proserpina and Pluto in the novel). The setting is the Sacro Bosco, a onceabandoned 16th century garden full of stone statues of mythological beings and monsters in Bomarzo, north of Rome, Italy. The celebrated (and controversial) artist Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala visited the garden in 1948, and it’s at that point in time that Crystal King’s imagination took flight.

Jo Piazza
I will be the first to admit that this book went straight to the top of my TBR (To Be Read) list because of my Sicilian heritage. Fittingly, I read this book while I was in Sicily in May 2024. The author, Jo Piazza has Sicilian roots and brought parts of her own family history to life. You don’t have to read this book in Sicily to feel fully immersed in the story—although I highly recommend it ;)
If you have been following my column, you know I love a woman- centered story that spans generations. First, we meet Sara Marsala when her world is falling apart. Her husband has left her and her business is failing. Her beloved greataunt Rosie has just passed away making it impossible to take the trip to Sicily they have been dreaming of together for years. Sara is eventually inspired to take the trip alone. As she begins to uncover family secrets, we meet her great-grandmother Serafina. We alternate between Sara and Serafina’s story all the while solving a murder mystery that was swept under the rug by generations before. Serafina’s story brings to light the resistance of the conventional roles of women in 1900s Sicily.
The narrative is told from the perspective of Julia Lombardi, a beautiful model who can’t remember where she’s from, where she’s been, or how she came to live in Rome. When she receives an offer to accompany Salvador Dalí to the Sacro Bosco to act as his muse, she’s strangely compelled to accept. From the moment of their arrival at the palazzo, Julia is inexplicably drawn to their enigmatic host, Ignazio. He’s alluring yet terrifying— and strangely familiar. Dalí commands her to pose as the goddess Persephone, and Julia finds the work to be perplexing, particularly as Dalí descends deeper into his fanaticism. He seems to believe she actually is Persephone and insists she must eat pomegranate seeds to rejoin her beloved. Between Dalí’s fevered persistence, Ignazio’s uncanny familiarity, and the agonizing whispered warnings that echo among the foreboding stone statues, Julia feels like she’s losing her grip on reality.
Embarking on a culinary odyssey through Italy’s opulent past, Crystal King delves into the world of historical gastronomy with each meal in the book, from the Renaissance delights found in the pages of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili and the recipes of Bartolomeo Scappi, to the culinary traditions established by Pellegrino Artusi. The luscious, mouth-watering details in the novel also pay homage to Dali’s great love of food, highlighting some of the dishes featured in his 1971 cookbook, Les Dîners De Gala. And as with King’s previous novels, she’s created an original companion cookbook that will be available to her readers at crystalking.com at the publication date.
With plenty of sex, romance, and suspense, IN THE GARDEN OF MONSTERS celebrates art, architecture, literature, mythology, and, of course, food, with its wholly inventive tale of ghosts and ancient gods. And with Surrealism turning 100 in October 2024, there’s a timely hook. About the Author: Crystal King is an
