A select group of teachers and Program Directors were invited guests of the Silvio Laccetti Foundation to a special meeting at the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) Meadowlands Environment Center in Lyndhurst to discuss new, unique and innovative projects to spread awareness of Italy’s contributions to our world. NJSEA hosted the session, providing technical assistance.
Special guests were Daniele Castellani, the Education Officer of the New York Italian Consulate and Dr. Angela Cristini, Director of the Meadowlands Environment Center, an NJSEA facility operated by Ramapo College.
in which Italian achievement is unrivaled, from automotives, to fashion, design, and cuisine. “Italia di Lusso” can be taught in Italian IV courses, or as a course open to any and all students tailored to grade levels. Mr. Castellani offered the possibility of assistance from the Italian government.
Castellani further suggested that a National Design Competition could be held with the assistance of various Consular offices in the US. Eventually, there could be National Teachers Conferences as well. Hopefully, Consulates in New York, Boston, Chicago, and California might serve as starting points
So many ideas were projected and discussed that we could fill much of this publication with them. Suffice to say that from this starting point, through cooperation and networking of all parties, big developments are coming in the future.
“One
Italian Summer” by
Rebecca Serle
The first item considered related to improving visibility of Italy’s historical and modern contributions to science and technology - especially modern ones which find little mention in curriculums, for example those of Volta, Meucci, Marconi and Fermi. The consensus was to use linkages through STEM classes and to promote extra-curricular assignments/ activities in Science and Italian language courses.
A perfect beach read for summer!
This book is one of the rare reads that I devoured in under three days. I simply could not put it down. In her writing, Rebecca Serle effortlessly transports you to Positano. I was completely immersed in the magical town, which was difficult to do while reading in cold, rainy London in the middle of January. I definitely get the fun, carefree “Mamma Mia!” vibes from this book.
It explores a close mother-daughter relationship and celebrates the freedom of being young. We will never get to fully understand how our parents were before they became our parents. Would you be friends with your mom? If you could travel back in time, would you recognize your mother? I’ll admit, this may not be a book for everyone. But it reminded me of the wonderful relationship I have with my mother. I was in tears by the end of the book. If you are looking for a fun, feel-good book to add to your end-of-summer reading list, pick up a copy of “One Italian Summer.”
Two such examples were cited. Mr. Castellani discussed the valuable role played by students from Spilimbergo, Italy who attended the word’s only school that trains students in the arts of mosaics and terrazzo. These students created the tile and mosaic work to restore NYC subway stations damaged by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. On a lesser scale, the amazing work of Union City School students working in terrazzo and mosaics, in conjunction with a project to honor Italians who brought these trades to the U.S., was presented by Visual and Performing Arts Supervisor Robert Astudello and Arts teacher Fabiana Rodriguez.
Related to environmental concerns, Dr. Laccetti explained his Foundation’s WorldCast seminars for high school students globally.
For WorldCast, students from various countries produce videos of significant environmental issues in their local areas. Examples include presentations about the Brazilian Rain Forests, the weakening of the Gulf Stream (Ireland), peril of the coral reefs (Australia), land preservation in the Meadowlands, saving our Jersey shores (Pt. Pleasant Boro) and Overtourism and Ocean Liners in Venice (Venice). To see these programs, visit: laccettifoundation.org. This year a new sponsor will be needed.
An exciting highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a totally new course for use in multiple educational settings. “Italia di Lusso” was designed for the Silvio Laccetti Foundation by Mauro Raguseo, Italian teacher at Lyndhurst High. The course is essentially an exploration of Italy as a global brand. It examines various fields
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), the City of Genoa and the Paganini Prize have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding to promote the prestigious Paganini International Violin Competition in the United States, marking a significant step in the Prize’s internationalization efforts.
The partnership between the Paganini Prize and NIAF is set to make a significant impact on the classical music scene in both Italy and the United States. As the Paganini Competition celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2024, this collaboration aims to promote classical music, nurture young talent, and strengthen cultural ties between the two countries. The agreement outlines a series of initiatives designed to showcase the competition’s prestige and expand its reach across the Atlantic.
“This agreement marks a decisive step for the Paganini Prize. Thanks to this collaboration with NIAF, we can further consolidate our internationalization objectives. The new Artistic Director, Nicola Bruzzo, and the new Jury President, the renowned Maestro Uto Ughi, will make significant contributions to achieving these goals,” stated Giovanni Panebianco, President of the Paganini Prize.
Central to this partnership is NIAF’s commitment to promoting three high-profile concerts in major U.S. cities. These performances, featuring finalists and winners from the 57th and 58th Paganini Competitions, will take place in Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia, bringing the exceptional talent fostered by the competition to American audiences. Beyond these concerts, the collaboration encompasses a broader range of activities aimed at promoting the competition’s legacy.

the City of Genoa and the desire to fulfill its mission of celebrating Italian culture in the United States by promoting Italy’s incomparable musical heritage. Paganini’s repertoire is an important element of that heritage and continues to enrich the world with its sublime beauty,” added Allegrini. The partnership will leverage various channels to highlight the rich musical heritage associated with Niccolò Paganini, the city of Genoa, and the Italian American community. This will include publicizing organized events and facilitating cultural exchanges. NIAF will also play a crucial role in helping secure sponsorships and partnerships to support the Paganini Prize, with a particular focus on bolstering the upcoming 58th edition scheduled for October 2025.
“This is a truly significant and promising agreement, never before signed, that will propel Paganini and Genoa across the ocean. After Paris, Madrid, and London, our internationalization horizons are expanding further, crossing the Atlantic,” concluded Barbara Grosso, Councilor for Cultural Policies of the Municipality of Genoa.
The agreement was signed in Rome on May 27, 2024, and will be in effect for the next 24 months.

About the Paganini Prize
The Paganini Prize is an international violin competition named after the famed virtuoso and founder of contemporary violin technique Niccolò Paganini. Created in 1954, it has been carried out ever since in the months of September and October. The “Paganini Competition” is one of the most important violin competitions. It is held every two years at “Carlo Felice” theater in Genoa, Italy. There are three levels of competition: preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals and repertoire that is played includes solo violin, violin and piano accompaniment, and violin and orchestra.
Submitted by Silvio Laccetti, Ph.D., a national columnist and a retired Professor of History It was the greatest moment of his racing career. It was the biggest disappointment he ever suffered in his career as a distance runner. Vincent Ciattei was being interviewed minutes after he finished his Olympic qualifier final race at storied Hayward Field at University of Oregon. He had run his 1500 meters in a time of 3:31.78, almost three seconds faster than the record for that race. For this achievement it was a time of joy, pride and celebration. But he finished 1/4 second behind the third place runner.

Recognizing the importance of engaging younger generations with classical music, the agreement places special emphasis on attracting young people’s attention through diverse sociocultural initiatives. By combining the prestige of the Paganini Prize with NIAF’s extensive network and resources, this partnership seeks to ensure a bright future for classical music appreciation and violin performance on both sides of the Atlantic.

Paris Olympics, a goal he had established for himself upon college graduation some six years ago.
Racing experts called it the greatest and deepest race in the history of U.S. Olympic trials. The first eight contestants, all National Medalists now, bested the old record. In any other year, Vincent would have been an Olympian!
The post-race interview given by Vincent was as amazing as the race itself. It consisted of a stream of consciousness replies to a series of unscripted questions.
The video is filled with powerful and moving facial expressions, voice intonations, sighs, smiles and gestures and soulful observations. The range of emotions
expressed runs from agony to ecstasy.
At the opening, his downcast eyes, his tone and hand gestures bespeak his own bewilderment. Smashing a record time while coming in fourth was “hard to swallow.” (He refers to his period of nausea.) But then his eyes light up as he forcefully states that the race was a testament to the greatness of the three athletes who placed higher than he. Smiles and luminous eyes are companions to his analysis of the race. “No one picked me to be an Olympian.” (I did!) He was justly proud of the effort he put in all year to get to the trials. His countenance was glowing. Almost in a confessional tone, Vincent stated flatly that he gave all he had, he was at his absolute limit.
He acknowledged that he came closer than ever, but...( a smile...a headshake...and silence).
Then, like an athlete getting a second wind, he let us know: “This doesn’t mean my year is over.” He will build on this success. He was of to St. Moritz for European competitions. Vincent Ciattei will now race with the Diamond League, the highest level of professional running.
If fate is fair, and I believe it is, then Vincent Ciattei is headed for the very best of times in his professional running career.
