Time To Celebrate Ferragosto! This Month Only!
by Courtney Kamm
Ferragosto, an Italian holiday celebrated on August 15, holds its roots in ancient Roman customs and Christian traditions. Originally known as “Feriae Augusti,” it was a festival dedicated to Emperor Augustus, celebrating the bountiful harvest and providing a break for workers from labor. In 582 AD, the holiday was transformed into a Christian feast day to honor the Assumption of Mary.
Today, Ferragosto remains a cherished Italian tradition, marked by family gatherings, delicious feasts, and a nationwide escape to coastal towns, lakes, or mountains. Italians embrace this midsummer break, relaxing under the warm sun, indulging in local delicacies, and enjoying the company of loved ones.
What is your ideal way to celebrate Ferragosto?

The Golden Slice Giveaway will be featured on freezer door promotions, the back of all Lucia’s Original Style Pizzas, the newly launched LuciasPizza.com website, Facebook and Instagram, and in partnership with more than 20 St. Louis food & mom blog influencers.
To enter the Win A Trip to Italy just enter your name, email address and phone number at luciaspizza.com/goldenslice to be entered into the random drawing. One winner will be announced early in 2024. No purchase is necessary to enter.

Anyone with the Golden Slice can scan the QR code, provide the authentication code from the Golden Slice, and instantly be informed which prize they have won. Prizes can be picked up at Lucia’s Headquarters in Fenton, Missouri or will be dropped off to the winners.
Golden Slice Giveaway will last until all pizzas with the Golden Slice promotion are sold from June 21 to November 17, 2023.
Scott Ashby, Lucia’s president, said “We have always wanted to do a ‘Golden Ticket’ type of promotion and the time seemed right with our new branding, packaging, and marketing campaign. Since our launch in 1981, we have sold more than 50 million pizzas, and now we are excited to take the brand to the next level. As competition in the frozen pizza category continues to increase, we want to ensure we are staying ahead of the other local and national brands, and rewarding our customers for their continued support and feedback. So thank you!”
Founded in 1981 by Lucia Tumminello, Lucia’s Pizza (aka Mama Lucia’s Pizza) got its start as a word-ofmouth Hill neighborhood staple before becoming the first St. Louis-style frozen pizza available in grocery stores. Over the years, the brand has grown to include both its namesake frozen thin-crust pizzas and a line of 4-Hands Brewery-inspired pizzas, both of which have endeared themselves to the St. Louis community as a source of edible civic pride. Lucia’s has sold more than 50 million pizzas since 1981, is privately owned, and employs 70 St. Louisans in its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility where it also produces frozen pizzas for other national brands.
St. Louis Food History Marked by Lucia’s Pizza Selling Its 50-Millionth Pizza Since 1981
What started in 1981 as a small pizza shop on The Hill and the first St. Louis Style Frozen Pizza sold in grocery stores, has emerged as a state-of-the-art pizza manufacturer today featuring three of its own brands (The Original, 4 Hands,
and Craft) and producing pizzas for other brands sold around the country.
According to Scott Ashby, Lucia’s Pizza prescient, said “Few companies last for 42 years let alone sell 50-million products, so this is a big moment in St. Louis food history. It falls into the culinary milestones of the toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, and the ice cream cone.
The actual 50-Millionth St. Louis Style Frozen Pizza Pizza is expected to be sold in the greater St. Louis area in early September, and when it does, Lucia’s will be there to ring the bell, throw the confetti, and celebrate the 50-Millionth consumer with a celebratory plaque, their face on promotional advertising, a year of free pizzas, and a special surprise from the president of Lucia’s Pizza.
Part of this 50-Millionth celebration is the Golden Slice Giveaway which will award 218 prizes including:

ITA Airways Partners With the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) Preferred Fares Between the United States and Italy for NIAF Members
ITA Airways and the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) have signed an important agreement to ensure air connectivity with preferred fares to the Italian American community members. The United States represents ITA Airways’ number one international market and destination, the most strategic one after Italy, as well as the country with the largest number of Italian origins citizens. Therefore, direct flights from North America to Italy are not only means for leisure and business travel but also “bridges” connecting the broader Italian community in the U.S.
More in detail, the Italian flagship carrier is providing to NIAF members traveling between the United States and
Italy an ongoing dedicated discounted offer and several flash discount promotions within the agreement term.
The first flash promotion exclusively dedicated to NIAF members, and their companions consists in a 20% discount on business class fares (excluding surcharges and taxes) on selected routes, including New York - Rome, New York - Milan, as well as Boston – Rome direct flights. The selling period started July 7, 2023 and the travel period will end on August 31, 2023.
NIAF members and their companions will also benefit of an ongoing 10% reduction on fares (excluding surcharges and taxes) for all routes within ITA Airways’ network connecting the United States and Italy, as well as the entire Italian domestic network (excluding Sardinia). This special discount (non-cumulable with flash promo) is available for travel until December 31, 2023 and applicable to all cabins: economy, superior, and business.
“By entering into this partnership with ITA Airways, we are delighted to offer our members exclusive discounts when traveling to Italy,” said Robert Allegrini, NIAF President. “We believe this collaboration will further enhance the connection between Italy and the United States and will make it more economical for our members to experience Italy firsthand,” added Allegrini.
“The partnership further strengthens ITA Airways’ commitment beyond tourism flows development by fostering the political, economic and cultural relations between the two Countries, which were recently enhanced by the opening of ITA Airways new Washington Dulles - Rome Fiumicino route. The new direct flight between the Italian and U.S. capital operating five weekly roundtrip flights that will become daily from August 1 to cover the high season demand, integrates the ITA Airways services already operating between Rome Fiumicino and New York (JFK), Boston, Miami, Los Angeles and, as of July 1, 2023 between Rome and San Francisco and from Milano Malpensa and New York (JFK)” stated Emiliana Limosani, ITA Airways Chief Commercial Officer. With direct flights to New York, Miami, Boston, Los Angeles, Washington, and San Francisco (launched on July 1) ITA Airways will operate 122 weekly roundtrip flights between North America and Italy in the height of the summer season.

NIAF Announces $75,000
Raised in Relief Funding to Help EmiliaRomagna Rebuild from Historic Flooding
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has raised $75,000 for Emilia-Romagna, as a result of the Italian Relief Fund efforts launched in May, to aid the people affected by the devastating historic flooding in the northeastern region of Italy. NIAF presented two separate checks to the Protezione Civile of EmiliaRomagna, the official civil protection agency responsible for coordinating emergency response and recovery efforts and to Coldiretti, Italy’s largest national agricultural association.
The first check was presented on June 13, during the NIAF Board of Directors Mission in Italy, where they traveled to Emilia-Romagna, NIAF’s 2023 Region of Honor (a program that partners with one of Italy’s 20 regions every year to showcase its history, culture, business, and tourism in the United States) and met with the President of the Region, Stefano Bonaccini. While discussing the ongoing flood recovery efforts, the NIAF Chairman, Bob Carlucci and President, Robert Allegrini, presented Bonaccini with a donation of $25,000 for the Protezione Civile Emilia-Romagna, which was raised by NIAF members and supporters.
The second contribution was acknowledged on Saturday, June 24, at the Italian Trade Agency event in New York City celebrating the candidacy of Italian Cuisine as an intangible world heritage of UNESCO. NIAF President, Robert Allegrini had the privilege to be able to personally convey the news that Chicago Chefs Cook had raised more than $50,000 for EmiliaRomagna flood relief to the National President of Coldiretti, Ettore Prandini, as well as to Italian Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida. All funds collected from Chicago Chefs Cook are being distributed to Coldiretti Emilia-Romagna, who will be distributing the funds to needy agricultural causes in this flood devastated region.
“Both occasions were excellent opportunities for NIAF to showcase its dedication to supporting Italians in need,” said Allegrini. “Our Foundation is committed
to helping rebuild and restore hope to the victims when tragedies and natural disasters occur in Italy, added Allegrini.”

foundation of the Italian Constitution.
“By proclaiming June 2 as Italian Heritage Day, we celebrate the important contributions immigrants have made throughout our history and embrace the rich Italian culture that has influenced Texas. It is also important that we recognize the countless economic, political, and social achievements of Italian Americans throughout our history. I am proud to commemorate this day as we reflect and honor the legacy of over half a million Italians who have made Texas their home,” said Senator Parker.
The general counsel for Italians Abroad, Vincenzo Arcobelli, has been a longtime representative for the Italian American community in Texas, known for his advocacy to bring greater awareness of the Italian culture in Texas. He has also been a strong advocate for SCR8 and expressed his gratitude for the passage of this designating legislation. “I am very grateful to Senator Tan Parker for introducing SCR 8 in the Texas legislature and working with us during the legislative session. With his leadership along with State Representative Giovanni Capriglione, who carried this bill in the Texas House, Italians across the Lone Star State will enjoy celebrating their rich heritage while sharing our culture with others for generations to come. I am also excited about Italian Heritage Day serving to further strengthen the political, economic, and friendship between Italy and Texas because after all, Italy matters for Texas and Texas matters for Italy!”
For the 88th Legislative Session, Senator Parker serves as vice chairman to the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs as well as Transportation, State Affairs, Local Government, Administration, and Education.
NIAF Supports Commemoration of Allied Landings in Sicily at Sicily 1943 Peace, Security & Prosperity Conference
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) proudly participated in and sponsored the Sicily 1943 Peace, Security & Prosperity Conference, held in Catania, Italy at the Museo Storico dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943, to mark the 80th anniversary of the Allied Landings in Sicily during World War II. The conference, organized to promote appropriate remembrance of the historic event, fostered collaboration among local and international dignitaries, and aimed to build enduring relationships between Sicily, Italy, and their counterparts in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Joseph Lonardo, General Consul of NIAF and a proud Sicilian American, represented the organization and delivered a speech at the conference, emphasizing the shared history and cultural heritage between Sicily and the United States. Lonardo’s presence highlighted the common bonds between the people of Sicily and their counterparts in the international
community.
The Sicily 1943 Peace, Security & Prosperity Conference witnessed the gathering of esteemed international dignitaries, including the British Ambassador to Italy Rt. Hon. Edward Llewellyn, the U.S. Consul General in Naples Tracy Roberts-Pounds, officials from Ireland, Canada, and Italy, and even Helen Patton, the granddaughter of General George S. Patton. This diverse representation of leaders from around the world underscored the conference’s commitment to fostering global cooperation and understanding.
In addition to its active participation in the conference, NIAF hosted an exclusive private dinner at the renowned Me Cumpari Turiddu restaurant in Catania. The dinner provided a unique opportunity for networking and camaraderie among the distinguished guests. The presence of influential figures from various countries and Patton further deepened the connections forged during the conference.
“The Sicily 1943 Peace, Security & Prosperity Conference served as a significant platform for honoring the Allied Landings in Sicily and advancing collaboration among nations,” stated Joseph Lonardo. “NIAF is proud to have played a pivotal role in advancing dialogue and cultivating long-lasting connections in the international community.”
The city of Catania collaborated with the international conference, which included the active involvement of Mayor Enrico Trantino and representatives from Regione Sicilia. Throughout the conference, attendees had the opportunity to watch a series of documentaries and enjoy performances by the Banda della Brigata Aosta and the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro Bellini of Catania.
NIAF remains committed to its mission of preserving and promoting the Italian American heritage while advocating cultural exchange and collaboration on an international scale. The foundation’s active involvement in events like the Sicily 1943 Peace, Security & Prosperity Conference underscores its dedication to bridging communities and celebrating shared history.

NIAF Statement on President Biden’s Nomination of Adm. Lisa Franchetti
The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) applauds President Biden’s historic decision to nominate Admiral Lisa Franchetti as Chief of Naval Operations. If confirmed, Adm. Franchetti will become the first woman to ever serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This

Franchetti’s qualifications make her exceptionally prepared for this role as she is currently serving as the vice chief of naval operations. She previously led the U.S. Navy’s 6th Fleet, based in Naples, Italy, and covered all naval forces in Europe and Africa. Her distinguished 38-year career includes combat experience, leadership of a carrier strike group deployment, and senior strategy roles. Adm. Franchetti is an accomplished professional who has shattered gender barriers throughout her Navy service.
NIAF joins all Americans in congratulating Adm. Lisa Franchetti on this momentous nomination. Her talents, dedication and authentic leadership will greatly benefit the Navy and our national security. We urge the Senate to swiftly confirm her, so she can bring her exceptional abilities to represent all service members on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Adm. National Italian American Foundation Mourns the Loss of Iconic Singer Tony Bennett
It is with great sadness that the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) mourns the passing of legendary singer and quintessential Italian American, Tony Bennett. He won 20 Grammy awards, underscoring his exceptional genius.
Beyond his musical achievements, Bennett, born Anthony Dominick Benedetto, was a proud Italian American from Long Island City, New York, who embodied the immigrant values of hard work, passion, and living life to the fullest.
