The Safety & Security Committee need your help by Courtney Kamm
The Safety & Security Committee, consisting of both residents and neighborhood business owners, has come up with three initiatives to immediately address, including the formation of a neighborhood surveillance camera list. The list would be created to assist police in their investigation of neighborhood
crimes and would only be shared with Officer Mike Haman of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the committee’s police liaison. If you partake, camera owners will be kept anonymous and camera locations confidential. If you are interested in sharing your camera footage, please contact Carolyn Grosse at: safety@hill2000stl. org. The Improv Shop buys Gaslight building on The Hill by Courtney Kamm
The Improv Shop, a comedy venue and training center in St. Louis, recently purchased the Gaslight Studio and Lounge building on The Hill. The building is currently home to Rock Star Tacos and the Gaslight recording studio, and Improv Shop Founder Kevin McKernan plans to keep it that way. The Improv Shop decided to purchase the building in response to the increased demand for improv workshops, since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. McKernan recently told Riverfront Times that they have a lot of businesses come to them for improv workshops as teambuilding exercises and now that people are back at work, employers want to reestablish a positive team mentality amongst employees.

Previous owners, Gaslight Studio, centered the space around music and McKernan plans to honor and expand upon that intention by inviting different types of art and building a stage for all types of performers alongside classrooms for improv. The Improv Shop also remains at the current location in The Grove.
Emmy’s for The Hill by Courtney Kamm
The Netflix series “Fresh, Fried and Crispy” was recently nominated for their fourth Emmy and our very own neighborhood was featured in Season 1 Episode 1. “Fresh, Fried, and Crispy” host, Daym Drops, visits restaurants around the country highlighting fresh takes on fried food. Debuting on Netflix last summer, the show kicked off in St. Louis. It visited some of your favorite spots on The Hill including Zia’s and SweetArt, amongst others. You can watch the St. Louis episode and more streaming on Netflix.

Earlier this summer, Erio’s Pizza & Restaurant turned off their ovens and shut their doors for the very last time. But not to worry, hopefully soon you’ll be able to buy the same Erio’s you know and love right in your local supermarket. After 51 years of business, Erio’s thanked their customers on Facebook for all the support they’ve shown the restaurant in a heartfelt message that they were officially closed for business. They continued to share the different projects they are working on including a line of frozen pizzas, house dressing, and pasta sauce to sell in local stores. Props & Robbers - A new comedy
St. Louis Playwright Julie GeorgeCarlson has completed a lively comedy that combines her years in the theatre with her lifelong love of gangster movies - it’s The Godfather meets Waiting for Guffman in the backstage comedy Props & Robbers. Set in the fictional (yet oddly familiar) Stan Musial University Theatre, this play features twin brothers Vito and Frankie Falcone, who switch places to settle old scores and restore long-lost relationships. Presented by First Run Theatre, George-Carlson is testing the waters with this staged reading which will feature 17 talented local actors. She hopes that her first audience will prompt conversations about future development opportunities. This is truly a wonderful chance to participate in the birth of a new play. “I love St. Louis and I love theatre. This play is about people who are on the cusp of discovering who they really are and embracing their filial love for each other. For the characters whose lives have been touched by the brothers, everyone involved will eventually come to the same realization: ‘Family is the most important thing’.” All are invited to attend the reading at the Robert Reim Theatre in Kirkwood, on Monday, September 12 at 7 p.m. Admission is free and audience members are welcome to stay after the reading for a brief talk back with the playwright, director, and actors. Napolitano wins race for Italy
Robert Napolitano Long-distance runner Robert Napolitano, who starred at Red Bank Catholic High in New Jersey was victorious in the 2022 Italy Run by Ferrero 4M, a 4-mile course in Central Park, New York held on July 16, 2022 at 8 a.m. Napolitano, an AllAmerican at Columbia College, finished first out of a field of 5295 competitors. His winning time was a formidable 19 minutes and 38 seconds. His pace per mile was 4 minutes and 55 seconds. He finished 34 seconds ahead of second place, Jacob Adams of Yonkers. Speaking after the race, Napolitano said, “I am pleased with my performance. As an Italian American I was honored to be part of this year’s festival celebrating Italy’s Independence Day. He entered the race through his association with the
Silvio Laccetti Foundation of Fairview, New Jersey., which sponsored him. The foundation seeks to promote Italian American heritage and achievement in the United States and is particularly active in New Jersey. Some years ago, Dr. Laccetti had noticed the paucity of standout Italian American distance runners in United States high schools. He hopes Robert Napolitano’s victory will inspire more Italian American boys and girls to take up the sport of distance running. The 2022 race is the third edition of the Italy Run by Ferrero 4M. It was suspended the past two years because of COVID-19. A triumvirate of partners brought about this special return event: Fabrizio Di Michele, the Consul General of Italy in New York City organized the race in cooperation with the New York Road Runners (NYRR) and Ferrero North America. Ferrero is a world leader in the confections industry, and its Nutella brand is known around the world. The significance of the race is best summed up by George Hirsch, President of NYRR. It “... represents a great act of friendship between Italy, America and the City of New York.” Now, that legacy is epitomized by the first Italian American winner of The Italy Run. Un lungo viaggio per raggiungere Sant’Angelo d’Alife, in una rovente domenica di luglio, Comune in provincia di Caserta di circa duemila abitanti gemellato con L’Aquila che vanta i natali di Celestino V, per l’evento eccezionale dell’anteprima assoluta del libro di Angelo De Nicola in uscita “I Papi e Celestino” della One Group Edizioni. L’accoglienza trionfale degna di un romanzo di altri tempi, con personaggi la cui spiccata ospitalità profuma di buono, di pane appena sfornato, di semplicità e buone maniere, ma che hanno saputo sapientemente cogliere al volo questa importante occasione di scambio culturale. Il motore dell’operazione va attribuito a Giovanni Caso Vaccari, nativo di questa città ma per lavoro trasferitosi all’Aquila, dove abita con la sua famiglia da ormai diversi anni, insieme al sindaco Michele Caporaso, agli assessori Giovanni Curtopasso e Pasquale Mariano e infine il parroco della chiesa, don Mario Rega, che ha accolto la comitiva aquilana che ha preso parte a questo bellissimo viaggio culturale nel nome di Celestino V. Coinciding with the Feast of the Assumption, this holiday is about Italian clubs celebrating the peak of summer with food, by Courtney Kamm
The National Italian American Foundation is pleased to announce the application is now open for the NIAF on Campus program. The program empowers Italian American college students with the resources to support the success of university Italian clubs across the United States. This year-long program culminates in bringing together a representative from each NIAF on Campus club to participate at NIAF’s Anniversary Gala. The student representatives will have the opportunity to connect with other Italian American college leaders. “Our youth is the future of the Italian American community,” said NIAF Chairman Robert E. Carlucci. “NIAF is dedicated to engaging young Italian Americans to help develop a greater awareness of their
friends, and fun. Throughout history, different types of festivities have taken place during the month of August to celebrate the harvest. These celebrations included horse races and activities such as decorating oxen and other “beasts of burden” who have been released from their duties for the day. Such traditions are still alive today in the form of beach games, water balloons, bonfires, dancing, and eating - a true celebration of summer. Ferragosto marks the end of summer and the transition back into work and school for most people. It is a national holiday celebrating a time of vacation; I think Ferragosto might be most Italians’ favorite time of year.
