S

Daar was in die begin baie haat, want ek was so ’n voorloper in dié veld. Ek kon nie verstaan hoekom mense so daarteen was nie.

8 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

HOE VOEL JY OOR JOU TALENT?

Dis ‘n roeping. As dit nie was nie... Ek wou hoeveel keer wegstap.

Ek het baie beleef as kind. My pa was ook baie fyngevoelig.

MY OUERS, 5 JAAR GELEDE IN NIEU-SEELAND

MY OUDSTE DOGTER, JULIA

Só God het my mettertyd geleer.

waarheid leef. God is altyd deel van my lewe. Jy moet reg lewe. As dit dan so verkeerd was, sou ek al lankal vir God gevra het om my weg te neem. Elke keer as ek dink God moet my gawe wegvat, kry ek net meer werk of ek sien ‘n teken wat my weer hoop gee.

MY JONGSTE DOGTER, ANITA, IN NIEU-SEELAND 2019

toe.

Positiewe denke. Ek is eintlik my hele lewe lank met baie vrese opgesaal.

Ek was deel van verskeie kerke in my lewe. Ek weet net ek moet my eie 10 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

Ek het in my leeftyd baie geleer oor verhoudings.

Hy was my goeie vriend, wat omtrent elke tweede dag by ons aan huis was.

COVER vra jy geld?’ Dis my lewe! AFSLUITINGSBOODSKAP?

Daar is so baie ander stories, ek kan seker nog ‘n boek skryf.

Waar jy ookal gaan, gaan jy. Elke land het sy eie probleme. Jy is nie beter af elders nie.

FINN, MY ENIGSTE KLEINKIND | KERSFEES 2019

n 1995 the famous South African satirist and playwright Pieter-Dirk Uys was on his way to Mc Gregor, when he took a wrong turn and ended up in Darling! He bought a dilapidated Victorian house which took six months to renovate. Luckily Darling could provide the necessary skills and labour to do the job: a young man who specialized in Victorian restoration, a Danish electrician, a wizard carpenter and a community of artisans who scraped, oiled and gently restored the old house to its former glory. After Pieter-Dirk Uys moved from Cape Town to Darling, Jochi Gremels – estate agent at the time – brought to his attention that the old station building stood empty. The dormant idea of having his own theatre was rekindled in Pieter-Dirk’s imagination. The station building was at first hired for R80 a month before Pieter bought it in 1996. The interior was restructured with a small stage and enough space for 12 tables and chairs and thus the old station became Evita se Perron. Inspired by the legends of Argentina’s Evita Peron and our own Evita Bezuidenhout, this was the ideal place for a theatre. Besides, the word perron is Afrikaans for station platform! For the first year, activity was centred on the small corrugated iron or blik building in its strange colours next to the railway line. Pieter inherited the colour scheme; when the station was derelict and rusted, concerned townsfolk provided whatever paint they could find. So the Perron still proudly displays the unique colour scheme of pink, turquoise, blue and white. After the year of experimentation in 1996, Pieter purchased the remainder of the gravel land and the building was extended to include a resaurant-cabaret venue. Architect Jake de Villiers retained the style of the original station in all the additions. Currently Evita se Perron can entertain an audience of up to 130 people. The main attractions are the various Pieter-Dirk Uys shows and his famous chorus line of political characters, some of whom have been with him since 1980. Of course Evita Bezuidenhout is not in the least ruffled by the daily goods train rumbling by, letting everything shiver and shake! Currently the complex houses two theatres, a 14 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

resaurant and bar, The Darling Trust, Elsie Balt Art Gallery, EVITA SE PERRON | 1998 Museum/ Nauseum, Gravy Train Saloon, Station Gallery, Boerassic Park and a community garden called Tannie se Tuin. One finds it hard to remember that this was once just a rural railway station. The former Darling station dates from 1903, although the railway line passed Darling by the turn of the century. Grain was trasported from the grain stores in Darling by ox wagon and later by railway connection to the station. Trains and railway buses used to run every day. At 7h30 in the morning the railway bus pulled in from Saldanha on its wat to Cape Town and in the evenings at 6 o’clock it pulled in again on its way to Saldanha. Martha Mosterd started selling pies at the station. When she retired her daughter-in-law, Emma Mosterd, carried on. Emma was married to Japie Mosterd who had a garage and transport business. Emma’s café at the Darling Station sold moer-coffee, chips, cigarettes, etc. but it became famous for its freshly baked chicken pies. Emma trained Hannes Fortuin to make pies with home-made pastry, which was made at her home. When the bus or train was due to arrive, Emma rushed off in her little Volkswagen Beetle to collect a fresh batch of piping hot chicken pies for the eager customers. In 1989 it became obvious that the quaint station building would be demolished. The Darling Afrikaanse Sakekamer (chamber of commerce) came to the rescue, however, and was able to prevent what would undoubtedly have been a great cultural loss.

ART AND ME

Yzerfontein artist, Ami Smuts, recounts her journey of creativity, what inspires her, and has advice for those who would follow suit. ARTICLE | PHOTOS AMI SMUTS

y passion for seascapes was triggered by some of my happiest memories as a child, playing in the warm waters at Scrijwershoek Farm on the Langebaan Lagoon or on the rocks at the start of 16 Mile Beach, in Yzerfontein. Inspiration to paint can be triggered by a blob of colour, a memory or a beautiful setting. Finding time to paint is another story; I sometimes burn the midnight oil to work on a canvas. With an uncomplicated, happy childhood and being part of an artistic family and having a painter grandmother, Beatrice (née Baby De Jongh) Versfeld, I think I was destined to paint. Besides part time lessons as a child, I went on to study art and my first paid job was as a graphic designer in Paarl. I also had the amazing opportunity to do part time screenprinting classes in 1992 at the then Mabana Cultural Centre in Taung, Bophutaswana. I began dabbling with pigments and cloth. This was the start of creating with the potential to earn an income. An artistic entrepreneur was born! My first sellable art was painting on calico. Having wall space to display and from which to sell is essential to any artist. My parents Thor and Helen Halvorsen built Vyge Valley Farm Stall on the West Coast road and I started trading in 1994. Over the 13 years the venue was very popular for pies, farm bread and art, and many exhibitions were held here.

Having my own Farm Stall allowed for stocking the shelves with my creations. My creative side was really tapped into when a partner and I had a pottery factory, Pot o’Clay. Besides seascapes, painting flowers gives me pure joy. The curves and flow of a glass bowl of white Iceberg roses inspired a 2m x 1.5m canvas, one of my largest oil paintings ever. I had to stand on crates to reach high enough and used at least 50 tubes of oil paint. I have gathered many life and business tips over the years which may be applied in many ways: yy Buy the best canvasses and paint for your creativity. yy Arts & crafts stacked away in a garage will not sell. yy Price your art immediately, otherwise you will lose money against a strong negotiator. yy Don’t be shy to promote yourself. Use social media to your advantage. yy Learning and developing never stops. yy Google can be an artist’s friend. You can “how to…” just about anything. yy Make time for your passion and don’t feel guilty doing what you love. yy Keep some of your art as you go along. yy Keep records of paintings and your sales, it is so inspiring. yy Stop procrastinating. Start, paint, be happy. My art is currently being sold by Café Mosaic, Main Road, Darling and House of Décor in Yzerfontein and from my house in Yzerfontein. I am currently working towards an exhibition in Yzerfontein planned for the Easter holidays. j

DARLING SCARECROW FESTIVAL 2019

CAL NEW LO

22 NOV - 1 DEC

CONTRIBUTION BY STEPHAN MOSER

D

uring the last two weeks of November, Darling welcomed its annual invasion of scarecrows. Over 30 families, businesses, and friends of this unique initiative, followed the call and created an amazing variety of scarecrows, placing them in the front yards of their houses or businesses. The voting for the most popular scarecrow via facebook was open to everybody, visitors and locals alike. Thanks to the Darling Scarecrow Festival a stroll through good old Darling became almost a kind of an Art Walk. There was a sun smiling from a column, an elephant hiding in a bush, an Eskom guy working on a switch box on a balustrade and a farmer driving a tractor made of crates and scrap. Since the theme of the festival 2019 was “We are South Africa” there was also quite a number of rugby players on display. The winner was the Butcher, followed by the Elephant and the Wood Twins. Part of the festival was also the traditional auction for charity. Besides wine, art, pet food and lots of useful goods the organising volunteers offered to prepare and serve a special Scarecrow Dinner in the private home of

one of the organisers. The successful bidder visited Darling in January and enjoyed Zebra on Salad, traditional Bobotie and a delicious pudding with ice crème, all paired with Darling wines and MCC. Even the dishes were made by scarecrow fairies. In total over R11 000 was raised and donated to local charities and initiatives by choice of the buyer. Over the last three years the Darling Scarecrow Festival has become a wonderful initiative organised by volunteers and strongly supported by the community of Darling. See you in November 2020. j THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING 17

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES

FAIZ WILLEMBURG

The good effects of sport on the individual and in turn, on society, are well known. Cast your mind back to the 2010 World Cup here in our own city of Cape Town, or much more recently, Siya Kolisi’s magnificent leadership of the victorious South African rugby team. One man here is passionate in wanting to likewise use sport to make a difference in Darling. ARTICLE CONTRIBUTORS JANET WITHINGTON | RIAAN NEETHLING

F

aiz Willemburg, husband, father of four, and wellknown builder with his twin brother Faried, became convinced some three years ago that a love of soccer would take Darling’s children off the streets, and give them a belief in themselves. Faiz, himself, comes from a large and caring family but things have not always been easy. He was born in District 6, proudly he tells us, at St Monica’s, and in the removals went to live with his grandparents in Athlone. From there his family moved to Manenberg where a young person’s life was constantly overshadowed by the threat of the gangs. He came to Darling in 1993 to work with builder Bobby Simmons, and here at the age of 19 years, met his future wife Lorraine. They married in 1996, settled together in Darling and in 1998 his brother Faried was persuaded to move here too. His parents joined them in 2001 and now four brothers of the six children have made Darling their home. The Willemburgs have been builders for generations and in 2001 the brothers took on their first big job for Henk van der Merwe. The family chose Darling to get away from the violence of the Cape Flats, but by the summer of 2018/2019 the gangs had infiltrated here too from Atlantis and the stabbings and intimidation began, sucking the youth into their culture with devastating effect on our society.

18 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

Faiz realised that if there is any difference to be made it all depends on the children and so on the 26th of January 2019, a date forever etched in his memory, he circulated the news that there was to be a meeting for boys interested in being part of a soccer club. Great was his excitement when fifty enthusiastic children and ten parents turned up but Faiz went home to Lorraine with the realisation that he had the dream, he had the passion, and now he had a club but absolutely nothing else – no money, no equipment, not even one soccer ball!

Willem Bester later sold to Jan Weskus (Albertyn), a burly gentleman, who in turn sold to a Portuguese called Manny. I remember one day at the end of the 80s when my father-inlaw, Nico Muis, wanted to purchase a few items from Manny. It was quite expensive in comparison to what he had been used to paying elsewhere and my father-in-law told Manny that in so many words. Manny’s reply was, “You want it? You buy it. You don’t want it? You don’t buy it”. My father-in-law bought the items, and Manny stood there with a big grin on his face. Never was the price of any item ever discussed again nor did anyone complain about pricing again. In 1981, Willem and Sakkie de Villiers built a shop called The One Stop Shop opposite the caravan park entrance. It included a small butchery. They called it One Stop Shop to indicate that you could visit Yzerfontein with nothing and then buy all you needed: matches, wood, braai grid, meat, fish, tinned food, wine and salads. It is now the premises of the Rosmead Bakery and Yzer Bru. In 1989 the Yzerfontein Coat of Arms was designed by the Interim Local Council. The motto was “The Sea provides, the Flowers decorate” (Mare Ditat Flores Decorant). When the Swartland Municipality officially took over in 2000, the Residents’ Association successfully applied for it to be adopted as its official Coat of Arms. Also in 1989, an open-air restaurant that specialised in traditional West Coast foods was opened on the land of Willem de Villiers, who owned Yzerfontein farm at the time. It was called Die Pan, in all probably after its location, which was situated on the perimeter of the salt pans. It consisted of a cement block-constructed building that housed the

fter the beaches south and north of Yzerfontein were closed to all motorised vehicles, the National Parks Board took over the area north of Yzerfontein, including the 16 Mile Beach, which was incorporated into the West Coast National Park. Horse rides along the beach on the Pearl Bay side and neighbouring farms south of Yzerfontein were then organised to take the place of the annual motor bike rides. A group of us, all ages and genders, would leave Yzerfontein early in the morning and ride to Jakkalsfontein, then still privately owned by Frank Basson. Friends and family would meet us there and we would braai and socialise for the day. A lot of stiff and sore bodies had to be treated after such a long day in the saddle! And the return ride would be torture as our bodies were not used to being in a saddle for such a long time. During this time, Willem Bester ran the first café located at the present service station. He had bought it from Ted Roseweare, whose house was very aptly named “Scott’s on the Rocks”. The only other café that I can remember was at 21 Main Road, first owned by Oom Amos van Zyl, a retired Manager at the Hoedjiesbaai Hotel in Saldanha, then later by James Hellyer. As mentioned in an earlier chapter, the building that their café was in was later bought by Christo Wiese, and upgraded to a modern double-storey holiday house. The irony is that Christo Wiese went on to purchase the house of Ted Roseweare a few years later as well. It is now the large building (two semi-detached houses) right behind the Municipal offices.

YZERFONTEIN HISTORY kitchen and store rooms. It had six thatched lapas where guests were seated for their meals. There were two menus to choose from. The first menu, the West Coast Buffet, consisted of a soup for starters, then grilled or smoked fish, a seafood pot and half a crayfish. Fresh home-baked bread with jam could also be enjoyed with it. It was completed with a potjie pudding. The second menu consisted of roasted pork rib and farm vegetables. The fresh home-baked bread and jam was also included. A free glass of wine was served with every meal as Die Pan was then still waiting for the approval of its liquor license. Guests were also allowed to bring their own bottle of wine. Die Pan could accommodate groups of up to 150 guests. During the winter months when the salt pans were full of water, some of the local young men, including Boeta Slabbert, would launch their rubber ducks at the restaurant and race past Die Pan at high speed, providing great entertainment to the visitors. In summer months the water would evaporate again, and the pans would dry out. It was one of the first open restaurants along the West Coast and was aimed specifically at tourists and other groups. The first owners were Michael-John de Villiers, Adaldert and Jeanette Biesenbach and it was managed by Erika Gentle. It was such a novelty at the time that an article was written in the Western Cape Tourism Newsletter in December 1989 and again in Die Burger on 12 September 1990. My final story I would like to share about this era involves two free-spirited and very naughty Darling farmers and a day at Preekstoel in Kraal Bay on the Langebaan Lagoon. We had decided one day during the holidays to travel to Preekstoel to spend the day on the shores of the Lagoon with friends. There on the western shores of the Lagoon, the wind is kept at bay by a large sand dune and the waters calm and pleasant. We were then still allowed to make wood fires and braai on the beach. My cousin Willem Basson sailed a Hobie Cat across from Langebaan so that we could all sail in the relatively safe waters of the Lagoon. The rest of us all travelled by road via the white dirt road that links Yzerfontein to Langebaan. And it was early that day that I had a feeling that it was a day that we were going to remember for a long time to come, because here came my cousin Paul Basson and his close friend Louis Duiwel (Loedolf), travelling in an old 1972 Citroen which he inherited from Granny a few years

earlier. Both were fit young farmers, well-built, fast and powerful. Both played on the wing for the Mooreesburg first rugby team and, most worrying of all, they were fearless. Because the white dirt road to Preekstoel was long and dusty, Paul Basson and Louis Duiwel stopped regularly for a refreshment or two. It was at one of these planned stops that an ostrich from the West Coast National Park crossed the road. After chasing the ostrich and cornering it against a fence, Paul Basson grabbed it by the neck while Louis Duiwel poured a beer down its throat. As concerned farmers, the ostrich had looked very thirsty to them, and it was a warm summer’s day and fresh water in the Park was scarce that time of the year. Later that afternoon, as we were all preparing to drive home, Paul Basson and Louis Duiwel insisted that they would sail the Hobie back to Langebaan. Despite their lack of experience, it was an easy downwind sail with an almost straight course and in the safety of the shallow Lagoon. As Paul Basson would tell me later that evening, because they were out of sight of land and other boats and because it was such a pleasant sail with a following wind, they decided to strip off their clothes to catch an all-over suntan, something a farmer does not always get a chance to do. When they were about half way across the Lagoon to Langebaan, the Hobie jibed unexpectedly and capsized. In the ensuing confusion, all their clothes were washed away, and before they could right the Hobie, its five-meter mast had become deeply embedded in a sandbank. In the middle of the Langebaan Lagoon were two completely nude farmers now clinging to an upturned Hobie. And it was a long while later when they were spotted by a passing boat, but it needed a lot of persuading for them to be rescued, for Paul Basson and Louis Duiwel had been in the water for a long time. And as proud marriageable bachelors, they did not want the girls on the rescue boat to get the wrong impression about them. The traditions that had started in the 70s, continued throughout the 80s. On Christmas Eve a church band from Darling still walked from house to house singing Christmas Carols and collecting money to buy new instruments for the Church Band. The Boeresports Day on the 1st of January was also being held yearly with the Mnr. Boepens (Mr Pot Belly) competition still the biggest attraction. DARLING TOURISM

Darling Museum launches its new logo and explains the reasoning behind it ARTICLE ROY ADCOCK

O

n Armistice Day, 2019, The Darling Museum launched its new logo to the world. This colourful and fun “block-matrix” strives to enshrine key communication principles for the Darling Museum. These colour blocks are “code” for how we think about our collection and our community. In the first place, the Darling Museum is about the preservation of social and technological history in a West Coast farming town. However, we are committed equally to outreach initiatives which must engage with our community, build bridges of understanding, open up dialogue about the past and how that influences the present. We are also a place to teach and explore new ideas and we can be a platform to develop creative solutions. In many ways our museum is about the future. “Your mind is a muscle. It needs to be stretched to stay sharp”

OBJECTIVES

When designing our logo, we first looked at our key objectives: yy A logo is a kind of coat of arms. It should be a symbolic communication device that talks to all we stand for and aspire to. It should work for us even when we are not there, because we are not just a building full of old things. yy Because we are a cultural repository and an educational resource, we should be a museum of ideas. We can use history to open minds, to grow and to reach out to our community and a much broader audience beyond. SYMBOLS

The designer built seven key symbols and elements into the graphics: yy Mechanical symbolism, like “building blocks” which allude to our technological and farming collection and history. yy The symbols also included an element for “heritage”, being the Greek column symbol. yy Lively colour and contemporary thinking was employed 22 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

in the design, because a museum does not have to be a remote dusty place full of inaccessible treasures! Each colour stands for something. -- The red symbolizes life. -- The yellow is an obvious symbol for the sun. -- The blue harks back to the blue of our old logo... so suggesting continuity. -- The green represents the farms that surround the town of Darling. The colourful geometry is attention-getting but it is also finely balanced. Because everything in our museum is basically handmade, (very little is plastic), we have printed the logo with softly “torn” edges, we have not used perfect symmetry, so to give salute to the worth of things made by the human hand. The composite logo implies fun, with learning and lively engagement. It suggests a playful interaction of several ideas. We are not just promoting one idea. The second “D” block element is a “portal”, a door, inviting a peek inside; it is a symbolic doorway that says, “come in” and explore. The third “M” block element again is a “portal” and looks like opening gates. Again, the coded message is “come in” and see what is behind the invitation. Broadly speaking the logo wants to suggest opening gateways to new experiences and ideas. New ways of thinking. Ways to discuss difficult or painful issues. Ways to learn and communicate. Ways to remember. New ways to gain perspective using history. New ways to “join the dots”, of the past and present. New ways to find cultural enrichment.

In conclusion, the evolution of a logo is a skilled process that takes abstract communication to quite sophisticated levels. In our daily lives, we are all bombarded by logos and symbols and they have a key influence on our motivation

and communications. They have the ability to calm us and give us confidence... or not! They can imply authority or stability or suggest fun ways to deal with life’s issues. It is not an easy task to evolve the perfect logo, and logos can take many iterations and “fine-tunings” of a given idea, to come up with something fresh and new and convincing! However, once a well-developed logo is in place, it is sometimes capable of assuming a great power over an organisation. It can motivate and imply leadership. It can embed the values of an organisation. It can inspire staff and customers to better levels of commitment and performance. It can generate allegiance and greater meaning. Two versions were developed. One Black and White and one in full glorious colour. j

New Earth Architecture, a practice based on the West Coast, explains the principles of passive design which makes use of climate, combined with architectural features, so enabling thermal comfort and energy efficiency all the year round.

his recently completed residential project on the Atlantic coast by West Coast based architectural firm, New Earth Architecture, incorporates a number of sustainability principles which the practice tries to incorporate in most of its projects. ‘Passive design’ is design that takes advantage of the climate to maintain a comfortable temperature range in the home. Passive design reduces or eliminates the need for auxiliary heating or cooling, which accounts for about 40% (or much more in some climates) of energy used in the average home. Passive design utilises natural sources of heating and cooling, such as the sun and cooling breezes. It is achieved by appropriately orientating the building on its site and carefully designing the building envelope (roof, walls, windows and floors of a home). Well-designed building envelopes minimise unwanted heat gain and loss. Strategic shading of a house and outdoor spaces reduces summer temperatures, improves comfort and saves energy. Direct sun can generate the same heat as a single bar radiator over each square metre of a surface. Effective shading - which can include eaves, window awnings, shutters, pergolas and plantings - can block up to 90% of this heat. Shading of glass to reduce unwanted heat gain is critical, as unprotected glass is often the greatest source of heat gain in a house. However, poorly designed fixed shading can block winter sun. By calculating sun angles for your location,

and considering climate and house orientation, shading can be used to maximise thermal comfort. Faced with a steep west facing mountain-side site, the challenge the architects faced was how to optimise spectacular views of the ocean to the west, and mountains to the rear and sides, whilst allowing modulated light into the large open double-volume living areas and managing to effectively shade large openings from harsh late afternoon westerly summer sun, and reflected glare off the Atlantic ocean. Extended roof overhangs, pergolas, sunscreens and internal blinds all work in concert to exclude overly bright sunlight at various times of the day, and high level ribbon windows were introduced to allow venting of hot summer air and cooling cross-ventilation flows. Conversely, the challenge in winter was how to warm the large spacious volumes, which was achieved by using passive solar heating principles such as glazing the end roof gables and using high level ribbon windows, which allow low winter sunlight to penetrate deep into the interiors, warming the floor slabs and internal masonry. This stored heat energy is then radiated back into the internal air volumes as exterior temperatures drop later in the day which, experience shows, can lead to internal temperatures of 8 degs C warmer than homes without passive solar design. The above principles, when combined with well sealed window and door openings and good insulation in roof and wall cavities, lead to optimal energy effiency, improved thermal comfort levels and energy cost savings over the lifetime of the building. j

hul sal weer by dié feeste te sien wees in 2020. Soos die Engelsman sê: It beats an office job any day!”

MARKET

Brothers David and Nico Baird, having discovered the health benefits of CBD oil, formed a company through which their products may be bought on-line, whilst they may also be found at the Groote Post Country Market. ARTICLE DAVID BAIRD PHOTOS CBD CAFÉ

C

BD Café and BairdCo CBD was established by Dr Nico Baird (Johannesburg) and his brother David Baird (Cape Town, Bloubergstrand) in 2019. After we had our first experience with CBD Oils it immediately became clear that this natural product had incredible effects on our general health and well-being. We were able to see that the product helped us with pain management, insomnia and really helped with stress management. Over the past year, the online store has attracted a large number of customers due to its convenience and the fact that we are also part of the Milagro CBD franchise. At the moment you will find us at markets around Cape Town, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein. The CBD market is rapidly growing, and we are always on the lookout for entrepreneurs who would like to market the BairdCo range in South Africa. Contact us if you are keen on starting your own business. Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a product that’s derived from cannabis. It’s a type of cannabinoid, which are the chemicals that is naturally found in the marijuana plant. Yes, it does come from the marijuana plant, but CBD does not create the “high” effect or any other form of intoxication that is often associated with cannabis. The “high” is caused by another cannabinoid which is commonly known as THC. The BairdCo CBD range does not contain THC and will not get you high. There is still some controversy around cannabis products like CBD oil because of recreational use of marijuana. But there is growing awareness about the reported health benefits that are experienced by those who use CBD oil as a dietary supplement. Some of the health benefits that have been reported are that CBD may relieve pain, reduce anxiety and depression, alleviate cancerrelated symptoms, reduce acne, benefit heart health and it may also have neuroprotective properties. The list goes on and on and we encourage you to do an online search as to the reported benefits of the use of CBD oil. CBD oil should be used as a dietary supplement and we are convinced that after using CBD oil you will start to experience the benefits.

30 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

You can order online at www.cbdcafe.capetown and also follow us on Instagram and Facebook where we will update you about the markets we will be at during the next weekend. We love the Groote Post Country Market and we will be there every month; we will also be at all markets that are arranged by I Love Yzer. Remember BairdCo CBD does not get you high, it gets you healthy. j

WHAT’S UP FOR WINE IN 2020 ARTICLE | PHOTOS CHARLES WITHINGTON THE DARLING WINE SHOP

T

he great thing about New Year predictions is that come year end everyone has forgotten what was predicted. I took a squiz at what the UK wine and Lifestyle press were predicting and decided best to go to the horse’s mouth of Wine Information. Said person is Richard Halstead who heads up what is universally acknowledged as the source of Wine Research at a company called, strangely enough, WINE INTELLIGENCE, based in London. Firstly, and unsurprisingly, with the average Briton spending something like 2 hours per day on social media, visual impact (packaging, display, product information) is more and more relevant in getting a wine off the shelf; there is simply no time to read the detail. But what is good news for quality wines (Wines of Origin) is that the millennials especially, though they are drinking less, are definitely going for better wines. Provenance and process are becoming more important. I asked Richard if he had any specific comments for South African producers especially in the light of latest export figures showing a drop in sales and his typical pithy comment was: “If I was to offer anything specific for South African wine for 2020, I would say that the volatility in world markets caused by Trump’s tariff threats on EU wine and the Chinese economic slowdown could be a blessing in disguise for production countries such as SA which have historically been struggling to get traction. As a South African producer right now, I would be pounding the pavements of key USA consumption markets such as Texas, Florida, Illinois and the Carolinas (all showing growth in our data) and picking up listings in the $10-15 space where nervous retailers are looking for replacements for their French and Italian products.” We have our own distractions in this country, but with the world in flux, there are opportunities to be had which must be taken if we are to stand a chance. 32 THE AUTUMN ISSUE 2020 j I LOVE YZER DARLING

BEHIND THE SHED (BUT IN FRONT ON THE SHELF)

The West Coast might be arid of climate but with the likes of Mike and Cathy Clarke it is fertile in ideas. And so it is with their recent release of Gin Botanicals… Hand grown, selected and beautifully presented it is their visual impact in a glass that simply blows one away. I have heard on more than one occasion from respected UK sources that South African gins sometimes tend to be “over infused” – rooibos, khaki-bos, and whatever else might come to hand, and often with colours to match. Don’t go OTT; just go DARLINGTON - a really well-made London style dry gin, infused with a touch of the legendary Kukumakranka plant. Serve with an equally subtle selection of local botanicals. SIMPLY STUNNING!

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER My article in the previous ILYD issue began a series of what others in the Wine world choose to drink, when not drinking their own – and first up was Lukas Wentzel of Groote Post. Someone recently suggested to me that I should pose the same question to myself... 1. You are hosting a dinner function at home for six people. You have a choice of 6 wines to serve – 2 must be your own wines, 2 must be Darling wines and 2 can be any

Annique Rooibos Health and Beauty

KICKSTART CONFERENCE FOR CONSULTANTS

nnique Health and Beauty, as a company, was established in 1971 and built around the healing properties of Rooibos. The South African wonder herb, Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis), is part of the legume family (Fabaceae) growing mainly in the Cederberg region about 250km from Cape Town in the Fynbos biome of the Western Cape. Efforts to cultivate the plant in places as far afield as Australia, China and United States of America have failed, the reason being one needs to have some understanding of the fynbos biome, where it is quite common for plants to only grow in certain areas or locations. Back in 1968 Dr Annetjie Theron “discovered” that Rooibos mixed with the formula of her unhappy baby who suffered from colic, calmed her down so that both could get much needed rest. Her research and findings after this discovery, resulted in the birth of the Annique Health and Beauty Company. Dr Theron had natural healing, anti-ageing and job creation in mind for all South Africans, and the direct selling side of the business grew to a multimillion Rand company. She will be remembered as a true South African pioneer. Funding was made available for ongoing research into the potential benefits of the Rooibos extract against ageing, heart disease, cancer, athletes suffering from fatigue during exercise and to ease the onset of acute mountain sickness at altitude, calming of the digestive system, weight control

South African Animal Portraits A-Z Meet the mammals, reptiles, insects and birds who populate the veld, desert, forests and ponds of Southern Africa. From the ant-eating aardvark to the zebra snake (spitting cobra), there is a new friend on every page. This ABC book is packed with vivid and charming illustrations and includes the scientific name of each animal. ARTICLE | ILLUSTRATIONS NICOLAAS MARITZ PUBLISHED BY DAVID PHILIP PUBLISHERS (NEW AFRICA BOOKS)

A

s author and illustrator Nicolaas Maritz writes in his foreword to the book: ‘Although an attractive landscape anywhere in the world may at first look quiet and empty, if you sit very still you will soon notice a few companionable insects crawling around in your immediate vicinity. Next, you will most likely become aware of a variety of birdcalls, near and far. If you are lucky, a small animal, like a meercat or a mongoose might show itself. In a game reserve you may be fortunate enough to encounter the so-called “Big Five”- elephant, rhino, leopard, Cape buffalo and lion. These are only some of the many beautiful wild creatures that animate the wonderfully diverse Southern African landscape. When compiling a book of animal portraits, ordered from A to Z, it is very difficult to decide on which creatures to include. Sometimes I have been a little creative about using the alphabet – but who can resist calling a frog xoxo to fit it under X? Southern Africa is so rich in wildlife diversity that for each chosen animal there are dozens of equally interesting alternatives. Fortunately most animals are highly photogenic, which also renders them ideal as subjects for drawing. I have had to limit my choice to a representative cross section of Southern African wildlife. Some of them are endangered species, like the rhinosceros. Responsible environmental and wildlife conservation is the only answer - and the sooner we realize that human beings are also quite high on the extinction list, the better.

All the creatures in the book I have encountered first-hand, either in the wild, in my garden or at a zoo. Of all the animals here, giraffes are my firm favourite. I love their graceful manner of movement. And apart from those long necks and beautiful markings, their large luminous eyes, with the longest lashes, are simply irresistible. If it were up to me, and if one could come back to an earthly paradise as an animal, I would come back as a tall, artistic giraffe, with a handy paintbox filled with all the colours in the world…’ ABOUT THE ARTIST

Nicolaas Maritz was born in 1959 in Pretoria. He went to school in Pretoria and Port Elizabeth. His first one-man exhibition was held in 1976, in Port Elizabeth, and he has exhibited at galleries and museums around the world. This multimedia artist’s works are represented in most of the art museums and public collections in South Africa. Maritz has also lectured in art and design at the universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch, as well as at private art schools in Cape Town and Pretoria. The artist lives and works in Darling, where he has a permanent exhibition space, the Maritz Museum, open to the public by appointment. His hobbies are cooking, gardening and armchair installation art. j

he West Coast has away to creep slowly and softly into your heart, but once there, it settles in for life. With such complexity and variety which makes the West Coast so special, it would be difficult if not impossible, to single out one specific entity which lures one into its web. Having said that, it would be tough to dispute that the region’s unique natural beauty as well as its fauna and flora contributes richly to its charm. All this natural beauty offers wonderful photographic opportunities and if you have ever wished to capture its exquisiteness at its best, we have exciting news for you. Starting this coming March, Geo Cloete, a multiple national and international award winning photographer will be presenting photographic workshops in Yzerfontein. With his in-depth technical knowledge, finely tuned artistic eye and practical know how these workshops promises to benefit all participants. Two vastly different yet equally interesting categories of photography has been chosen for these workshops. Night time photography will be the focus of one category and wildlife photography will be the focus of the second category. Geo is of the opinion that the skills required for these two categories will enable people to be well prepared for most photographic challenges whether visiting a game reserve, spotting a breath taking landscape or looking with new eyes at your surroundings once the sun has set. Yzerfontein has been described as the pearl of the West Coast and with its close proximity to Cape Town it makes for an ideal weekend getaway and location for the photographic workshops. With a number of game reserves and a National Park in close proximity there is plenty of subject matter to practise your new found skill with. Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to learn from one of the best. j

So kom stap saam!

Toegang is gratis, so nooi na hartelus jou vrinne saam. j

themselves comfortable for this exciting evening. All the holiday makers, families and children had a great evening singing along or just listening to the beautiful carols. The high light of the evening was Father Xmas arriving with the NSRI boat to deliver parcels of sweets to the children. A warm evening shared at the harbour with the stunning sunset that is so unique to Yzerfontein made this yet again an occasion to remember. Thank you to everyone that came to share the spirit of Xmas with us at this special event. From the whole team at Yzerfontein Tourism we would like to thank everyone who contributed to make it all possible! j

ecember 2019 was a festive and happy month in Yzerfontein. More than the usual events in December and the holiday vibes, made this past Christmas extra special. Yzerfontein Tourism with the NSRI held Carols by Candlelight at the harbour on the 22nd of December 2019. It was a beautiful evening with the stunning Marianne Gladwin and the young clear voice of Reanette Cilliers. Bertie Blom and Derick Nel supported the music to perfection. We had picnic baskets which could be ordered up front, and in addition Burger Fellers were there together with the Milk and Yummy food truck to satisfy hungry festive goers. ie ikoniese Yzer Challenge word jaarliks ten bate van die Yzerfontein Buurtwag aangebied, en was in 2019 weereens ’n heerlike dag.
