ARUBA’S HISTORY Scholars aren’t exactly certain when man first came to Aruba. For years it was believed that the first inhabitants were the Caiquetios, a tribe of Arawak Indians who living on the island when the Spanish arrived around 1500. However, recent excavations indicate there were inhabitants here long before the Caiquetios. Radio carbonic tests made on pottery fragments date them back to 290 B.C. and some archeologists have found evidence suggesting that Aruba and nearby Curacao were inhabited as early as 2540 B.C. A SPANISH COLONY There is no official record of when the Spanish first arrived. Curacao was claimed by Alonso de Ojeda in 1499, and it’s accepted that he did the same for both Aruba and Bonaire at virtually the same time. THE DUTCH ARRIVE Things probably would have remained quiet on the island were it not for the eighty years war in Europe. In their continuing struggle against the Spanish, the Dutch managed to take control of nearby Curacao, and realized they would have to occupy both Aruba and Bonaire as well. It was 1634 when the Dutch

first arrived. If they anticipated a struggle, they must have been disappointed: records state that they found only “… a few Indians and some Spaniards” on the island. The latter quickly decided they wished to remain loyal and left for South America. GOLD FEVER Again, Aruba was left alone- until March, 1824. Then a young boy brought home a strange rock he had found in the Rooi Fluit, along the north coast. His father sold it to a merchant for $ 17. The merchant quadrupled his investment. It was gold and the rush was on. The work was hard, the land was tough, but in less than 100 years almost 3,000 pounds were pulled from the unwilling soil. After 1916, it was deemed uneconomical to search for further deposits. In 1840, the island saw the beginnings of its first major industry. Aloe, that strange plant with the sticky, gelatinous pulp, was grown and harvested in vast amounts from huge plantations in the interiors of the country. Ideal for growing in Aruba’s semi semi-arid climate, aloe became popular around the world for cosmetic uses, and brought the island its first agricultural crop.

BLACK GOLD Aruba’s biggest bonanza however, came in the form of black gold. Oil brought riches to the island, but not because it was pumped from the ground. Indeed, no oil deposits have yet been found on Aruba. Rather, the island has ideal harbors, and a location convenient to the rich oil fields of Venezuela. In 1926, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell built a refinery on the western end of Aruba. Until 1953, it continued to refine oil. However the island’s fortune was made in 1929, when U.S. giant, Standard Oil, opened its Lago refinery. When built, the Lago facility was the largest in the world, at its peak, it employed more than 8,000 people involved in refining transshipping petroleum products around the world. The facility flourished for many years and contributed greatly to Aruba’s economy. It was shut down in 1985 and is owned today by Coastal. TOURIST BOOM In the mid ‘60s tourist began arriving in large numbers to the island. After Lago closed in 1985 the whole focus was turned to tourism and it became the number one business on the island. Today 70% of Aruba’s national income is generated by tourism and tourism related activities.

The fact that this beautiful small chapel is surrounded by sea, dirt roads and goats makes it even more impressive. The Alto Vista Chapel is the first church established in the whole of the Caribbean. This Chapel is also called the Pilgrim’s church and it was constructed by Spanish missionaries in 1750.

The Government of Aruba has dedicated approximately 18 percent of the island to this national park. It has many walking trails that are well kept and open to the public for exploring. Some tour companies offer guided tours through this massive protected area that is teeming with unusual plants and wildlife. The park is safe to explore if you stay on the main path.

BOCA GRANDI | This is the beach where you can enjoy the sun-rise. Aruba wakes up when the sun hits Boca Grandi. AYO ROCK FORMATION | The stone formations at Ayo were once the dwelling place of an ancient race of people that left petroglyph markings on the stone boulders. The area is surrounded by huge stones that look as if they had been by giants. Scientists still have not been able to explain how these rocks got here. Modern pathways have been constructed to allow the visitor to explore this ancient site. In the past, the Arowak indians used to inhabit this place, while putting their drawings on the rocks and in order to hear incoming thunderstorms closing in on the island.
