Illuminate Adelaide is a celebration of innovation, music, art, light and technology. Every winter, over 17 days and nights, Illuminate Adelaide will light up the city’s streets, laneways and architecture with a program of free and ticketed events by local, national and international artists and companies. Use this guide to start planning your visit and check back in May for even more exciting event announcements.

Welcome from The Hon STEVEN MARSHALL MP Premier of South Australia

Welcome from Co-Founders and Creative Directors LEE CUMBERLIDGE & RACHAEL AZZOPARDI

Our city enters a new decade with much to be excited about. Along with our world-leading reputation for the arts and cultural events, South Australia’s future technology and creative industries sectors are making sure Adelaide remains one of the world’s great creative cities.

Welcome to your Illuminate Adelaide!

An event like Illuminate Adelaide is a chance for the broader community to share in that spirit of innovation, and to empower local artists and world-leading thinkers to use our beautiful city as a canvas to create and inspire. It’s also an opportunity to carry our renewed appreciation for getting out of the house in the winter months, and give our city’s arts, tourism and hospitality sectors a much-appreciated boost. I congratulate Co-Founders and Creative Directors Rachael and Lee on this new addition to our calendar and look forward to seeing our city buzzing with light, art and technology.

We are so excited to launch our inaugural annual program for you, and for Adelaide to shine bright over 17 days and nights this winter. All are invited to rug up, embrace the cold, and explore the city’s architecture, streets, laneways, gardens and zoo like you've never seen them before, as we throw the switch on a massive free and ticketed program of projections, lighting installations, music and interactive and immersive artworks across the North, East and West precincts of our wonderful city. A big thank you to the artists and innovators from all over South Australia and the world who will contribute to this program and help us transform our city’s extraordinary public spaces. While it has been a challenging time for us all, we hope that Illuminate Adelaide will be an opportunity to come together and look towards a bright future. We can't wait to see you out and about this winter.

City Lights invites us to look up to the heavens and back to the past. Start the trail at East End Echoes – an eyecatching audiovisual dive into the histories and characters of the city, created by illuminart along with various artists. Soon after you'll find Sky Castle by ENESS — an inflatable, deconstructed rainbow in the heart of Rundle Mall which will transform Adelaide’s retail centre into an interactive dreamscape of colour and light.

West Precinct A big night in the West End gets a whole new meaning as Vans The Omega and an all-star team of international and local artists reimagine the city’s architecture and atmosphere. Immerse yourself in the gentle giants of Airship Orchestra by ENESS, be transfixed by the shimmering lights of Studio Toer's Firefly Field, take in Kaylene Whiskey's playful and thought-provoking journey into culture, identity and Country, and be engrossed by a brand new commission by the groundbreaking Atong Atem.

Thin Ice VR

WORLD PREMIERE

107 years ago Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on one of the era's most ambitious and harrowing journeys: to cross Antarctica coast-to-coast. Over a century on, environmental scientist Tim Jarvis AM has recreated Shackleton’s epic, tragic feat of endurance in an immersive virtual reality experience created by Monkeystack. As we join Jarvis in following Shackleton’s footsteps, we too bear witness to another new and heartbreaking narrative: the icy environment that Shackleton and his peers once explored has now been transformed by the effects of anthropogenic climate change. Equal parts catastrophic and transcendent, Thin Ice VR presents a uniquely affecting account of how humanity asserts its will over the extremes of nature — often in unforeseen ways.

Permanent Public Artwork

Patch Theatre @ The Studio

Illuminate Adelaide and the City of Adelaide have joined forces to commission a new public artwork inspired by themes of light, technology and community as a gift to the city to celebrate our inaugural year.

Patch Theatre has been expanding the minds of South Australia’s children for nearly half a century. They’ve travelled the globe, but there’s one frontier they’ve never explored: the Art Gallery of South Australia.

The work by South Australian artist Jason Sims will follow his long-running love of using light and reflection to play with our sense of space and shape, and will perfectly bookend the city's Market to Riverbank link.

With the support of the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation, Patch will commandeer The Studio at AGSA for the first time. Drawing inspiration from a work by Czech-Australian Surrealist Dušan Marek, a painting concurrently on display in AGSA’s major exhibition Surrealists at Sea, Patch will create a glowing interactive sea floor. Art lovers of all ages are invited to immerse themselves in this Surrealist experience and ‘draw in light.’
