Guenzler
“ We married homecoming weekend.”
Mary Ann Hagmeyer ’53 and Bob Guenzler ’53 were friends long before they attended IWU. They both attended Joliet Township High School, and were in the same homeroom for four years. They had many classes together, including A Capella Choir. Mary Ann was an accompanist for a high school musical in which Bob had a lead role. Their high school senior prom served as their first date. After high school, Mary Ann attended Joliet Junior College for two years, while Bob went to Bloomington to attend IWU. Despite the distance, the couple kept in touch, writing to one another every day. Mary Ann transferred to Illinois Wesleyan in her third year of college, and the relationship picked up where it left off. Bob and Mary Ann recall wonderful dates at Green Mill and Quality Inn for special dinners; and Irvin, Castle, and Esquire Theatres for movies. They were also very fond of campus concerts and athletic events. The couple married on October 18, 1953 in Joliet, IL. A host of Wesleyan alums contributed to the wedding: Charles Gaines ’53 & Marlin TenBoer ’52 were groomsmen. Helen Johnson LaCroix ’53 was the cake server. Professor Henry Charles ’43 sang a solo and organist, Bob Anderson ’55, played a beautiful ballad. The Guenzler’s are enjoying retirement in their Aurora home. Their time is occupied by activities with their children and grandchildren, Bob’s participation in local choral groups & bands, church activities at Community UMC in Naperville, IL, and traveling as Class Agents for IWU. 51
