VARSITY ATHLETICS Baseball The Titans finished with a 33-14 record and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament for the fourth straight year and 11th time overall. IWU was the 2010 NCAA Division III baseball national champion. Junior pitcher Jeff Johnson was chosen to the third team of the 2013 D3baseball.com NCAA Division III All-American team. Senior catcher A.J. Nathan was named to the 2013 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division III “Gold Glove Team.” Head coach Dennis Martel, recently inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, is closing in on 700 career wins as baseball coach at Illinois Wesleyan.
Basketball The men’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Division III tournament. The Titans finished the year at 23-6 and were 13-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Junior Andrew Ziemnik was named to the second team of the All-Midwest Region squads chosen by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He also was named to the second team of the 2013 D3hoops.com All-Midwest Region Squad, as well as first team all-CCIW. Titan teams have compiled a 205-35 home record since the Shirk Center opened in 1995. Ron Rose ’88 begins his eighth year as head coach of the team.
Cross Country In the past several years, the Titans have had a different individual finish toward the top in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. In 2012, six different IWU runners finished as the low finisher in the team’s ten meets. Freshman Kyle Nottingham earned “Most Valuable Performer” team honors after leading the way in three of the meets. Illinois Wesleyan welcomes back ninth-year head coach Greg Huffaker, who is no stranger to the CCIW. A 1999 graduate of North Central, Huffaker comes to IWU directly from Elmhurst, where he had been the head men’s cross country and track and field coach for three years. 4|
